Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

The Halacha below was derived from multiple classes orated by Rabbi Eli Mansour in the Bekiim B'Halacha series. Click on any of the dates below to hear the original audio files, which are the sources for today's Halacha below. 05-25-2025 05-26-2025 05-27-2025 05-28-2025 05-29-2025 How and When Should Tefillin Be Removed? This Halacha outlines the proper time, manner, and mindset for removing Tefillin, and the importance of not treating the end of the Misva as an afterthought. Topics include the order in which the Tefillin are removed, whether one should face the Sefer Torah while removing them, if a blessing is recited, how to handle the straps, and how to place the Tefillin back into the Kuracha —the special Tefillin bag. Special customs from the Mekubalim regarding reverence and silence during removal are also addressed. What Is the Proper Time and Setting to Remove Tefillin? Tefillin should ideally be worn until the end of Tefilah. According to the Ari"zal, one should keep the Tefillin on through the end of Aleinu Leshabeah , and only remove them afterward. Some Poskim allow removing them after Uva Letzion , but the more proper custom is to keep them on until the very end of Tefilah. This ensures we do not treat the conclusion of the Misva as insignificant. Additionally, one should not remove Tefillin while standing directly in front of a Sefer Torah. Doing so shows disrespect, as if turning one's back on the Torah. Instead, one should take a few steps to the side or angle themselves away. The act of removing the Tefillin should be done with quiet dignity, not rushed or distracted. The removal should also be delayed if Kaddish or Kedusha is about to begin. One must prioritize answering to these sanctified sections before beginning to take off the Tefillin. What Is the Correct Order for Removing the Tefillin? First, remove the Tefillin Shel Rosh, and only then the Shel Yad. This reflects the same order in which the Berachot are made and preserves the order of importance. The head Tefillin represents a higher level of Kedusha and is treated with extra care. According to the Zohar and the custom of the Mekubalim, even though the Shel Yad was put on first, the Shel Rosh must be taken off first to preserve the sanctity. Removing them out of order is considered improper. Some have the custom to pause briefly before removing the Shel Yad to reflect on the Misva and end it with thoughtfulness, not mechanically. Should One Say a Beracha When Removing Tefillin? A question arises whether one should recite a blessing upon removing the Tefillin, to thank Hashem for the opportunity to fulfill the Misva. The answer is no—there is no blessing recited upon removing Tefillin, just as there is no Beracha when exiting a Suka or finishing a fast. The Misva ends silently, respectfully. However, one should have a feeling of gratitude in their heart, recognizing the privilege of having worn Tefillin and asking Hashem to merit to wear them again. Should One Talk While Taking Off Tefillin? Just like during the donning of Tefillin, the removal should be done with seriousness and respect. One should not talk during the process, and ideally one should remain seated, focused, and silent while removing and storing the Tefillin. The Kabbalists stress that removing Tefillin is still part of the Misva, not a break from it. A person should not transition to regular speech or casual behavior until the Tefillin are completely removed and put away. How Should the Tefillin Be Stored After Removal? After removing the Tefillin, one should take care to store them neatly and respectfully. The straps should be gathered carefully—not tangled or stuffed haphazardly. Each component should be placed gently into the Kuracha , the dedicated Tefillin bag. The Kuracha serves not just as a case, but as a vessel of honor. It should be kept clean, closed securely, and not treated like a casual container. It holds sacred items and should be handled with care. One should avoid winding the straps in a sloppy or rushed manner. Although the special wrapping (to form the Name of Hashem) is only done when donning the Tefillin, even when putting them away one should show respect and care. Summary Tefillin should be worn through the end of Tefilah, preferably after Aleinu . When removing them, one should avoid facing the Sefer Torah, remove the head Tefillin first, and not speak during the process. There is no blessing upon removal, though gratitude should be felt. After removal, the Tefillin should be stored with care and placed respectfully into the Kuracha . All of this reflects the great respect we must show for this precious Misva from beginning to end.

This bible study episode delves into the order of salvation (Ordo Salutis), contrasting Reformed and Arminian perspectives, emphasizing God's sovereign election. Pastor Anthony explores salvation's narrative arc—creation, fall, redemption, and glorification—using Joel Beeke's framework. Key biblical passages (Titus 1, 1 Corinthians 15, Galatians 4, 1 Timothy 2, Romans 10) are examined to illuminate the fulfillment of the law in Christ ("telos"), clarifying that Christ's arrival marked the "fullness of time." The crucial role of preaching the Gospel ("euangelion") in revealing God's plan for eternal life is stressed, highlighting Paul's divinely appointed ministry and the enduring importance of proclaiming Christ crucified. The episode concludes by addressing the nature of Jesus as God ("God our Savior" in Titus 2:13), countering arguments from Jehovah's Witnesses using scriptural evidence and a concise analogy, and promising a further discussion on this topic next week. #reformedtheology #ordosalutis #salvation #gospel #jesuschrist #paultheapostle #scripturetruth #TheologyPodcast #christianpodcast #biblestudy 00:09:00 - Titus & Salvation's Order03:55 - God, Evil, & Salvation07:39 - Defining the Gospel11:08:59 - Christ, Scripture, & Law14:34 - Christ: Law's End17:57 - God's Salvation Timing24:59 - God's Plan & Preaching28:23 - Preaching God's Word35:17 - Jesus: Engaging Jehovah's Witnesses37:59 - Trinity, Grace, & LutherPodcast: www.ReformedRookie.comPodcast: https://anchor.fm/reformedrookieFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheReformedRookie Twitter: https://twitter.com/NYapologistSemper Reformanda!

The Shulhan Aruch, in Orah Haim (672), writes that the proper time for lighting the Hanukah candles is the "end of sunset," or Set Ha'kochavim – nightfall (listen to audio recording for precise citation). Practically speaking, this means that one should light the Hanukah candles fifteen minutes after sundown. One should make an effort to light the candles no earlier or later than this time. If one cannot light the Hanukah candles at the preferred time, he may light them later during the night. The Magen Abraham (Rabbi Abraham Gombiner, Poland, 1637-1683) was of the opinion that a person who returns home late at night lights the Hanukah candles without the Berachot, unless there is somebody else awake in the home who sees the lighting. Otherwise, according to the Magen Abraham, the Berachot are not recited, since there is no Pirsum Ha'nes (publicizing of a miracle) in such a situation. Other authorities, however, including Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer (Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) and Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach (Israel, 1910-1995), in Shalmeh Mo'ed (p. 218), disagreed. In their view, one may recite the Berachot over the candle lighting even if nobody else witnesses the lighting. This is the view accepted by Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Preferably, however, one should wake up one or two members of his household so they can witness the lighting. Many people are unable to light the Hanukah candles at the preferred time because of professional obligations, and therefore end up lighting later, when they return home from work. However, people who must light the candles later for work-related reasons must ensure to light at the proper time on Sundays, or other days when they are not at work. Even if somebody must light later at night on workdays, he must make a point of lighting at the proper time whenever this is possible. It should be noted that the practice in most Yeshivot and Kollelim is that the students leave when the time for candle lighting arrives so they can return home and light at the proper time, and they then return to the Yeshiva or Kollel to resume their studies. One is obligated to place enough oil in the lamp to sustain the flame for at least a half-hour. There is a custom that was famously observed by the Brisker Rav (Rav Yishak Zev Soloveitchik of Brisk, 1889-1960) to add a larger amount of oil to the Hanukah lamps, so that they continue burning late into the night. The Brisker Rav felt that since nowadays there are people walking about outside even until the late hours, it is proper to have the Hanukah candles burn until the late hours of the night to publicize the miracle. However, even he conceded that this is not required according to the strict Halacha, which requires simply providing enough oil for the candles to burn for a half-hour. It is forbidden to begin eating a "Se'udat Keva" ("established meal") before one lights the Hanukah candles. The prohibition begins a half-hour before the preferred time for lighting (assuming one plans on lighting at the preferred time). Thus, for example, if sundown occurs at 4:30 PM, such that the preferred time for lighting is 4:45, it would be forbidden to begin eating a meal from 4:15. A "Se'udat Keva" for the purposes of this Halacha refers to a quantity of a Kabesa (approx. 2 oz.) or more of bread. It is thus permissible to eat a small snack or have a drink before lighting the Hanukah candles, but it would be forbidden to eat a slice of pizza, for example. Halacha also forbids studying Torah before lighting the Hanukah candles. This prohibition, however, begins only once the time for candle lighting arrives; one may learn Torah within a half-hour before the time for candle lighting. Summary: One should endeavor to light the Hanukah candles fifteen minutes after sundown; if this is not possible, one may light later during the night. One must supply enough oil to sustain the flame for a half-hour, though some have the custom to add larger amounts of oil. One should not begin eating a meal within a half-hour before the time for lighting Hanukah candles until he lights, and one should not learn Torah once the time for candle lighting arrives, until he lights.

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

It is customary among Sepharadim to recite Selihot each morning during the month of Elul, ideally around the time of dawn. One should recite the morning Berachot before reciting Selihot; in particular, one must ensure to wash his hands with the Beracha of "Al Netilat Yadayim," and recite Birkat Ha'Torah, before Selihot. It should be noted that according to some authorities, the time for the morning hand washing begins only at dawn. We do not follow this opinion, as we allow a person to wash his hands with the Beracha as soon as he wakes up with the intent of remaining awake for the day, even if this occurs in the middle of the night. However, in deference to the view that the time for washing begins only after dawn, one who washed his hands before dawn should preferably wash his hands again – though without a Beracha – after dawn. During the period of Selihot, then, one should arise early, wash his hands with a Beracha, recite the other morning Berachot, and then recite Selihot. After Selihot, he should preferably wash his hands again without a Beracha. As mentioned, the preferred time for reciting Selihot is the time of dawn, as this is the time when the Almighty is especially receptive to our prayers. Nevertheless, it is permissible to recite Selihot earlier, anytime after Hasot (midnight as defined by Halacha), or later, anytime throughout the day. Thus, for example, many communities hold Selihot services late on Mosa'eh Shabbat, after Hasot, since many people are up late on Mosa'eh Shabbat and it would be difficult for them to wake up at dawn for Selihot. By the same token, people who, for whatever reason, cannot recite Selihot early in the morning may arrange a Minyan for Selihot at any point throughout the day. Summary: Selihot should ideally be recited at dawn, though it may be recited at anytime from Hasot (midnight as defined by Halacha) until the end of the day. One should perform the morning hand washing with a Beracha and recite the other morning Berachot before reciting Selihot. If one washed his hands before dawn, he should preferably wash his hands again after dawn without a Beracha.

Psalm 75 was written by Asaph to be a song of praise, of thanksgiving and celebration for how the Lord had miraculously delivered Jerusalem from the powerful Assyrians. True worship really begins when we get our eyes off our circumstances, and we focus on Who God really is! That's what Asaph did in verse one: “We give thanks to You, O God, we give thanks! For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near.”   There is no other name like the name Jehovah, Elohim, the Creator God,  El Elyon, the Most High God! We know He is supreme and sovereign and is near when we see His mighty works around us in so many ways. Even today we can see wonderful works of God in our lives, in our families, especially if we learn to obey Him and depend upon Him. He can save us, He can cleanse us, He can wash us, He can redeem us, He can restore us. Even this week I received a call from someone sharing with me how God is restoring a marriage that appeared to be beyond repair! Praise the Lord!   That's what true worship looks like! His wonderous words declare that His name is near!   Now in verses 2-5, we have a wonderful message from God and He is reminding us that; "When I choose the proper time, I will judge uprightly. The earth and all its inhabitants are dissolved; I set up its pillars firmly. Selah” We watch as the enemy dominates and appears to be victorious in their evil conquest over other nations. A good example is what is happening in Europe right now between Russia and Ukraine, where an evil ruler with his own agenda is destroying cities, killing innocent women and children, and we wonder where is God. Doesn't He see this? Does He care?   Even the nation of Israel in King Hezekiah's day would be surrounded by the Assyrians and the people were terrified and greatly distressed!  But God says, “Don't you worry about it! I'm the One who sets the time of judgment, just wait! Just wait! The time of judgment is coming!   Today we watch the evil, wicked, ungodly people in powerful positions of authority mocking God, blaspheming Him and His Word and persecuting His people and we fret! But God says, “Don't worry about it, just wait, I have set a time of judgment! God says, “When the proper time comes, I will judge uprightly. Just wait, I can take care of anything!   In our passage today, God assured His people that He had already chosen the appointed time for judgment and that His people could wait in confidence and peace because He had everything under control. The Lord has His times and seasons (Psalm 102:13; Acts 1:7), and He is never late to an appointment. It may seem to us that the foundations of society are being destroyed (Psalm 11:3; 82:5), and the "pillars" of morality are falling down, but the Lord knows what He is doing (46:6; 1 Sam. 2:8). Jesus Christ is on the throne and holds everything together (Col. 1:17; Heb. 1:3).   But there is also a message for the godless (vv. 4-5), and it warns them not to be arrogant and deliberately disobey the will of God. Before it lowers its head and attacks, a horned beast proudly lifts its head high and challenges its opponent, and the ungodly were following this example. The Hebrew word translated "lift up" is used five times in this psalm (vv. 4, 5, 6, 7, 10), and in verses 4-5, it is associated with arrogance that leads to trouble. A "stiff neck" and proud speech are marks of an insolent and rebellious person, not one who is bowed down in submission to the Lord (Deut. 31:27; 2 Kings 17:14; 2 Chron. 36:13; Jer. 7:26).   They will not repent nor turn from their evil ways even as God deals with them. But God's message for us today is wait, wait, wait. He has an appointed time of judgment, and it is sure to come!   God bless!

There is a disagreement between the Rishonim regarding the proper time to light the Chanukah Menorah. The Rambam states that it should be lit at "Shki'at Ha'Hama" (sunset), whereas the Rosh and the Tur hold that the proper time is "Set Ha'kohavim" (nightfall). Maran rules that the Menorah should be lit "Im Sof Shki'ata"-at the end of sunset. The Mishna Berura (Rav Yisrael Meir Kagan of Radin, 1839-1933) and the Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) understand this to mean nightfall, in accordance with the Rosh and the Tur. Hacham, Ovadia and Hacham Bension concur that nightfall is 15-20 minutes after sunset. It should be noted that Maran also rules that one should not light earlier or later than the prescribed time. If one lights too early, it is still light outside and the candles are not noticeable. Hacham Bension writes that one should not light later than 50 minutes after sunset Of course, if one missed that time he can still light afterwards, B'diavad-after the fact.SUMMARYThe preferred time for lighting the Menorah is 15-20 minutes after sunset until 50 minutes after sunset.

By the same token, people who, for whatever reason, cannot recite Selihot early in the morning may arrange a Minyan for Selihot at any point throughout the day.Summary: Selihot should ideally be recited at dawn, though it may be recited at anytime from Hasot (midnight as defined by Halacha) until the end of the day. One should perform the morning hand washing with a Beracha and recite the other morning Berachot before reciting Selihot. If one washed his hands before dawn, he should preferably wash his hands again after dawn without a Beracha.

The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Vayigash, presents a number of guidelines concerning the preferred way to give charity (listen to audio recording for precise citation). He writes that whenever one gives charity, he should do so while standing, for reasons related to Sod (Kabbalistic teaching). Additionally, when a poor person comes to one's home to collect charity, it is preferable not to give him directly, but rather to give the money to another member of the household who should then give it to the person collecting. Giving charity has a certain "Tikkun," an effect in the upper worlds, which occurs through an intermediary. It is therefore proper to give charity through an intermediary to correspond to the effects that charity has in the upper worlds. When a person gives charity, the coin corresponds to the letter "Yod" at the beginning of the Divine Name of "Havaya." The donor's hand – which contains five fingers – corresponds to the letter "Heh," his arm corresponds to the letter "Vav," and the recipient's hand corresponds to the letter "Heh," such that by giving charity one completes the divine Name, so-to-speak. The question arises as to how one can fulfill this aspect of charity when placing money in a charity box, as is customary each morning during Pesukeh De'zimra, when one recites the words "Ve'Ata Moshel Ba'kol." How can one complete the divine Name if he does not place the money in the recipient's hand, which corresponds to the final letter "Heh" in the divine Name? The Ben Ish Hai writes that one should carry with him at all times a special charity pouch, and he should give charity by placing the money with his right hand into the pouch which he holds in his left hand. In this manner, the left hand serves as the hand of the poor person, to complete the divine Name. If a person does not have a pouch, then he should simply place the money directly into his left hand, and then place the money into the charity box.The Ben Ish Hai mentions in this context the practice of his father, Rabbi Eliyahu of Baghdad, who carried around a special charity pouch and placed money in the pouch several times every day. The Rambam (Rabbi Moshe Maimonides, Spain-Egypt, 1135-1204) wrote that it is preferable to perform a Misva more frequently in small installments, rather than to perform a Misva more intensively at less frequent intervals. Thus, it is preferable to give small amounts to charity frequently throughout the day, rather than give larger amounts less frequently, and therefore it is an admirable practice to carry around a special charity pouch and place coins in it several times a day.The Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria of Safed, 1534-1572) made a point of giving charity each day before the Shaharit prayer – while reciting the words "Ve'Ata Moshel Ba'kol" in Pesukeh De'zimra - and also before the Minha prayer. He would not, however, give charity before Arbit, because he maintained that the nighttime hours are not an appropriate time for giving charity. The nighttime period is a time of harsh judgment, and it is therefore not suitable for charity. This custom is recorded by the Hid"a (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1806), in his Birkeh Yosef (Orah Haim 235:1, Yoreh De'a 247:2). The Sha'ar Ha'kavanot likewise writes that the primary time for giving charity is in the morning, before Shaharit, and that giving charity in the afternoon is acceptable, though not as a crucial as in the morning. Nighttime, however, is not an appropriate time for charity. This Halacha is codified in Yalkut Yosef (Shulhan Ha'ma'arechet, p. 394; listen to audio recording for precise citation). The Hid"a, in his work Kiseh Rahamim, writes that even if a person prays Arbit before sundown, he should not give charity before Arbit.Summary: It is preferable to give charity while standing, and to give the money to another person who then gives it to the person collecting. If one places charity in a charity box, he should first place the coins with his right hand into his left hand, and then place the money in the box. It is an admirable practice to carry around a special charity pouch and place coins into the pouch several times every day. It is preferable to give charity during the daytime hours, and not during the nighttime hours.

Stand Firm in Your Freedom The Harvest Principle, Part 2 Galatians 6:7-10 (AMP) – [7] Do not be deceived and deluded and misled; God will not allow Himself to be sneered at (scorned, disdained, or mocked by mere pretensions or professions, or by His precepts being set aside.) [He inevitably deludes himself who attempts to delude God.] For whatever a man sows, that and that only is what he will reap. [8] For he who sows to his own flesh (lower nature, sensuality) will from the flesh reap decay and ruin and destruction, but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. [9] And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint. [10] So then, as occasion and opportunity open up to us, let us do good [morally] to all people [not only being useful or profitable to them, but also doing what is for their spiritual good and advantage]. Be mindful to be a blessing, especially to those of the household of faith [those who belong to God's family with you, the believers]. I. Two Universal Spiritual Principles A. Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. B. Do not be deceived: A man reaps what he sows. 1. The principle of sowing and reaping is a universal spiritual law that holds true in every context. 2. The principle of sowing and reaping can apply either in a positive or a negative way. a. Sow to please the sinful nature and you will reap destruction. b. Sow to please the Spirit and you will reap abundant life and eternal life. II. Three Exhortations for Doing Good A. Do not become WEARY in doing good. 1. Weary (ekkakeo) means “to be weak, to fail in heart; to be utterly spiritless, to be wearied out, exhausted; to lack courage, to lose heart, to be fainthearted.” (Ephesians 3:13; 2 Corinthians 4:1) Ephesians 3:13 (NIV) – [13] I ask you, therefore, not to be DISCOURAGED because of my sufferings for you, which are your glory. 2 Corinthians 4:1 (NIV) – [1] Therefore, since through God's mercy we have this ministry, we do not LOSE HEART. 2. Good (kalos) means “beautiful, magnificent; good, excellent in its nature and characteristics, and therefore well adapted to its ends; beautiful by reason of purity of heart and life; praiseworthy; morally good, noble, honorable.” B. We will reap a HARVEST at the proper time if we do not give up. 1. The promise is that we will be rewarded for our faithfulness. (Matthew 25:21; 1 Corinthians 3:11-15) Matthew 25:21 (NIV) – [21] “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!’” 1 Corinthians 3:11-15 (NIV) – [11] For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. [12] If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, [13] his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. [14] If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. [15] If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. 2. There are two qualifiers for reaping a harvest: a. The first is that we will reap a harvest at the PROPER TIME. b. The second is that we will reap a harvest if we DO NOT GIVE UP. 1) Give up (ekluo) means “to loose or unloose as a bowstring; to weaken, to relax, to exhaust; to have one’s strength relaxed, to become feeble through exhaustion; to grow weak, to grow weary, to be tired out; to become despondent.” (Matthew 15:32; Hebrews 12:3) Matthew 15:32 (AMP) – [32] Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, I have pity and sympathy and am deeply moved for the crowd, because they have been with Me now three days and they have nothing [at all left] to eat; and I am not willing to send them away hungry, lest they FAINT or become EXHAUSTED on the way. Hebrews 12:3 (AMP) – [3] Just think of Him Who endured from sinners such grievous opposition and bitter hostility against Himself [reckon up and consider it all in comparison with your trials], so that you may not grow WEARY or EXHAUSTED, LOSING HEART and RELAXING and FAINTING in your minds. 2) We cannot give into the temptation to coast or to let down our guard or to become complacent and apathetic. C. Therefore, let us take every OPPORTUNITY to good to all people, especially other Christians. 1. Because we know that all good that we do will be rewarded by God, then we should be encouraged to continue to take advantage of every opportunity to do good to all people. 2. A person is to provide for the needs of his own household first before he meets the needs of others. (1 Timothy 5:8) 1 Timothy 5:8 (NIV) – [8] If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. 3. In the same way, while we are to be willing to help anyone in need, the priority must first be for those who are fellow believers. (Romans 12:13; 3 John 5-8) Romans 12:13 (NIV) – [13] Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. 3 John 5-8 (NIV) – [5] Dear friend, you are faithful in what you are doing for the brothers, even though they are strangers to you. [6] They have told the church about your love. You will do well to send them on their way in a manner worthy of God. [7] It was for the sake of the Name that they went out, receiving no help from the pagans. [8] We ought therefore to show hospitality to such men so that we may work together for the truth.

Genesis 41:1-40 Through many years of ministry I have often wondered why God sets aside some of his most gifted people for extended periods of time. When such times grow in length, it's easy to question whether we will ever know the joy of using our gifts again, or whether we were ever gifted at all. Our text speaks not only to God's supreme faithfulness, it also gives insight into the mystery of what God was doing in Joseph, while he was painfully waiting for the proper time. It's much easier to endure the darkness when we can see the purposeful hand behind the crucible.
