My Catalina Sky Survey teammate Hannes Gröller was asteroid hunting in the constellation of Ursa Major with the University of Arizona 90 inch Bok telescope on Kitt Peak when he discovered a faint moving object surrounded by a tiny gas and dust cloud called a coma. May 19, 2028 comet C/2025 D1  (Groeller) reaches its closest point to the Sun some 14.1 times the Earth-Sun distance and thus sets the record for the comet which stays furtherest from the Sun.After rounding the Sun comet C/2025 D1 (Groeller) will head back into truly deep space perhaps never to return.

This is the time of year when we start thinking about cold snaps – frontal systems that cause sudden drops in temperature, and often bring clouds. A recent study suggests that our entire planet went through a major cold snap a few million years ago. It was caused by a giant cloud – a dense clump of material between the stars. The space between stars contains many clouds of gas and dust. In fact, we’re inside one right now – the Local Interstellar Cloud. But it’s quite thin, so it doesn’t have much impact on the solar system. The study says we might have passed through a much thicker cloud two million to three million years ago. Its material could have been 15 thousand times denser than the current cloud. That could have drastically squeezed the magnetic “bubble” generated by the Sun. Today, the bubble extends more than a hundred times the distance from Earth to the Sun. But in the denser cloud, it could have been squeezed to just a quarter of the Earth-Sun distance. Since Earth would have been outside the Sun’s protective bubble, it would have been bombarded by more cosmic rays. And dust from the interstellar cloud might have settled into our atmosphere. The researchers say that could have had an impact on Earth’s climate – perhaps making it much cooler. That could have killed off some life, and perhaps altered the development of human ancestors – possible impacts of an interstellar cold snap. Script by Damond Benningfield

If Planet Nine exists, it’s taunting astronomers. Several studies of the orbits of small bodies far from the Sun hint at the presence of a massive planet in the outer solar system. Yet the possible world has remained hidden. Planet Nine was suggested in 2014, based on the orbits of some big chunks of rock and ice beyond the orbit of Neptune, the Sun’s most-distant major planet. The orbits appear to be influenced by the gravity of a body many times as massive as Earth. The most recent evidence of Planet Nine comes from a study that modeled the orbits of 29 objects beyond Neptune. All of the orbits are tilted and stretched out. At their closest, these objects pass just inside the orbit of Neptune, which is 30 times farther from the Sun than Earth is. But they average more than a hundred times the Earth-Sun distance, so it takes many centuries for them to orbit the Sun. Astronomers calculated the likelihood of so many objects following similar paths under two scenarios. In one, they modeled the gravitational effects of the Sun’s known planets, plus the pull of the rest of the galaxy’s stars and gas clouds. In the other, they added the effects of a possible Planet Nine. The model with Planet Nine produced a far better match to the orbits. So far, a search of observations made along the planet’s possible path has come up empty. So if Planet Nine exists, it’s playing a game of hide-and-seek far from the Sun. It might be winter here in the northern hemisphere, but the Sun is biggest and closest to us for the entire year today. Earth is at a point in its orbit called perihelion. The Sun is about 91.4 million miles away – about one and a half million miles closer than average. Earth's orbit isn't a perfect circle. Instead, it's an ellipse – a shape that looks like a slightly flattened circle. So over the course of a year, the Earth-Sun distance varies by about three percent. The oceans and atmosphere distribute heat around the planet, so the changing distance doesn't cause a change in global temperatures. The date of perihelion isn't fixed. Instead, it shifts forward by an average of about one day every 58 years. That's because Earth “wobbles” on its axis like a gyroscope that's running down. About 800 years ago, Earth was closest to the Sun on the winter solstice, in December. And about 4300 years from now, it'll be closest on the spring equinox, in March. The changing distance to the Sun doesn't create the seasons. Instead, the seasons are caused by Earth's tilt on its axis. But the distance to the Sun does have an impact on the seasons. Earth moves fastest in its orbit when it's closest to the Sun, and slowest when it's farthest away. That means the seasons are different lengths. In the northern hemisphere, winter is the shortest season – about five days shorter than summer, when Earth is farthest from the Sun.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

One of the most brilliant men of science in the ancient world, Eratosthenes was best known as a scholar and librarian in his day, But he made his greatest contribution to science in the realms of geometry and astronomy fueled by his curiosity, ingenuity and reason. From his home in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, he used a chance reading from a book at the library of Alexandria to devise a method of determining the shape and size of the earth. Not stopping there, he later determined the size and distance to the moon with fair accuracy and even attempted the same of the sun.For more information on each episode visit my website:https://www.ronvoller.com/Support the show

A giant “bubble” surrounds our solar system. It's kept puffed up by the Sun, and it extends far into space. In fact, scientists recently came up with a new estimate of the bubble's extent: a thousand times the distance from Earth to the Sun. The bubble is known as the heliosphere. It's created by the Sun's magnetic field. A flow of charged particles known as the solar wind streams into space along the lines of magnetic force. As the Sun rotates, the streams spin around like ribbons of water from a lawn sprinkler. Eventually, the solar wind gives way to particles from interstellar space — the boundary of the heliosphere. The Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft have been probing the boundary. The craft are farther from the Sun than any other spacecraft in history. Their observations indicate that they're in a transition zone. The interstellar magnetic field drapes around the heliosphere like water flowing around the bow of a ship. Scientists recently combined readings from the Voyagers with those from IBEX — a satellite in Earth orbit that looks for the boundary of the heliosphere. Their work suggests that the transition zone may extend a thousand times the Earth-Sun distance — about a hundred billion miles. The Voyagers won't live long enough to reach that boundary. But other probes — in Earth orbit and beyond — should help scientists map the exact extent of the heliosphere. We'll talk about an even bigger bubble tomorrow.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

India yesterday launched its first observation mission to the Sun, just days after the country made history by becoming the first to land near the Moon's south pole. Aditya-L1 blasted off from the launch pad at Sriharikota and it will be located at a distance of 1.5 million km from the Earth, which is 1% of the Earth-Sun distance. India's space agency says it will take four months to travel the distance. If Aditya-L1 is successful, India will join the select group of countries that are already studying the Sun. The sun expedition comes 12 days after India's  Chandrayaan-3 landed on the moon's south pole where it has already confirmed the presence of several elements including sulphur on the moon's surface as it continues searching for signs of frozen water after its historic landing. This would be a great day to stand on the Earth-facing side of the Moon. That's because there's a full Earth in the sky. Our planet is almost four times the diameter of the Moon, so a full Earth looks much bigger than a full Moon. And Earth reflects an average of about three times more sunlight than the Moon does. Put those numbers together, and a full Earth shines more than 40 times brighter than a full Moon -- a spectacular sight in the lunar sky. On the other hand, from Earth, we can't see the Moon at all. That's because it's “new” today -- it crosses the line between Earth and the Sun. It appears close to the Sun, so it's hidden in the Sun's glare. The only time we do see the new Moon is during a solar eclipse -- when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun, blocking all or part of its light. The Moon crosses the Earth-Sun line about once a month. But the Moon's orbit around Earth is tilted. Most months, the Moon passes above or below the Sun. Two or three times a year, though, the geometry is just right, creating an eclipse. The next one is coming up on October 14th, and it'll be visible across most of North America. The Moon will be farther from Earth than average, though, so it won't completely cover the Sun's disk -- a ring of sunlight will encircle the Moon. The next total eclipse will take place in April. It, too, will be visible from North America -- a spectacular sight from Earth and the Moon.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

First, an important notice: Today's program has a lot of numbers. So grab your phone or pencil and get ready -- there might be a quiz. The reason for the numbers is Earth's location in its orbit. Today, we're farthest from the Sun for the entire year -- 94 and a half million miles. That's one and a half million miles farther than average. The distance changes because Earth's orbit is an ellipse -- like a circle that's been stretched out. So during the year, the distance to the Sun varies. We're closest in January, and farthest in July. The average distance from the center of Earth to the center of the Sun is known as an A-U -- an astronomical unit. It's a basic yardstick for measuring distances within the solar system and in other star systems. But using the Earth-Sun distance to define the astronomical unit has some problems. For one thing, the distance changes, and not just because of Earth's lopsided orbit. So in 2012, astronomers adopted a precise, constant value for the A-U. Are those phones or pencils ready? The A-U is now defined as 149 billion, 597 million, 870 thousand, 700 meters. That's 92 million, 955 thousand, 807.273 miles. Now, about that quiz: Lined up end to end, how many large pepperoni pizzas could fit between Earth and the Sun? A-plus to everyone who figured it out, because we haven't -- but we are hungry for pizza.  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

A fast radio burst source at a complex magnetised site in a barred galaxy by H. Xu et al. on Wednesday 14 September Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are highly dispersed millisecond-duration radio bursts. Recent observations of a Galactic FRB suggest that at least some FRBs originate from magnetars, but the origin of cosmological FRBs is still not settled. Here we report the detection of 1863 bursts in 82 hr over 54 days from the repeating source FRB~20201124A. These observations show irregular short-time variation of the Faraday rotation measure (RM), which probes the density-weighted line-of-sight magnetic field strength, of individual bursts during the first 36 days, followed by a constant RM. We detected circular polarisation in more than half of the burst sample, including one burst reaching a high fractional circular polarisation of 75%. Oscillations in fractional linear and circular polarisations as well as polarisation angle as a function of wavelength were detected. All of these features provide evidence for a complicated, dynamically evolving, magnetised immediate environment within about an astronomical unit (au; Earth-Sun distance) of the source. Our optical observations of its Milky-Way-sized, metal-rich host galaxy reveal a barred spiral, with the FRB source residing in a low stellar density, interarm region at an intermediate galactocentric distance. This environment is inconsistent with a young magnetar engine formed during an extreme explosion of a massive star that resulted in a long gamma-ray burst or superluminous supernova. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2111.11764v2

The planet Venus is changing things up this week. Tonight, it crosses the line between Earth and the Sun — a moment called inferior conjunction. As it does, it moves from the evening sky to the morning sky. Within a few days, it'll climb into view low in the east-southeast during the dawn twilight — as the brilliant “morning star.” Venus is at its closest now — just 25 million miles away. Yet the planet doesn't shine at its brightest, as you might expect it to. That's because it's a very thin crescent. The Sun is lighting up the hemisphere that's facing away from Earth right now — just like a new Moon. That means it's nighttime on the hemisphere of Venus that's facing us, with only a thin sliver in the sunlight. Over the next few months, Venus will move farther from the Earth-Sun line, so the Sun will shine on more of the planet's Earth-facing side. In other words, Venus will be getting fuller. That'll make it brighter. At the same time, though, Venus will be moving farther from us. That will make it fainter. When you combine those factors, Venus will shine at its brightest in mid-February. Regardless of how bright it looks on any given date, though, Venus always ranks as the second-brightest object in the night sky — only the Moon outshines it. Look for Venus beginning later this week, quite low in the late dawn twilight. It'll stay in the morning sky all the way through summer — the beautiful “morning star.”  Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

You might think of the planet Kepler-64b as Tatooine-plus. Like the home of Luke Skywalker, the planet orbits both members of a binary — two stars locked in a tight orbit around each other. That gives the planet two sunrises and two sunsets every day. In the case of Kepler-64b, though, the two stars are bound to another binary. That gives the system four stars in all. So far, Kepler-64b is the only planet known to reside in a four-star system. One of the stars the planet orbits is bigger, heavier, and brighter than the Sun. The other is smaller, lighter, and much fainter than the Sun. The stars are quite close together, so they orbit each other once every three weeks. The planet itself is a giant. It orbits the stars at about 60 percent of the distance from Earth to the Sun. That makes the planet quite hot — probably too hot for life. The other binary consists of a Sun-like star and another feeble star. The pair is separated from the other stars by about a thousand times the Earth-Sun distance. Even at that range, though, it would be bright enough see during the day. And at night, the combined stars would shine about as bright as a full Moon — lighting up the surface of a unique planet. The Kepler-64 system is several thousand light-years away, in Cygnus. The swan climbs into view by around midnight, and is high in the sky at first light. Kepler-64 is near the intersection of the swan’s body and wings. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

One of the closest stars in the constellation Puppis has a tight family of big planets. All three of them are between 10 and 20 times as massive as Earth. That makes them comparable to Neptune, one of the giants of our own solar system. And all three are much closer to their star than Earth is to the Sun. HD 69830 is about 40 light-years away. The star is a bit smaller and lighter than the Sun, and less than two-thirds as bright. So unless you have really sharp eyes and really dark skies, you need binoculars to pick it out. Astronomers discovered its planets 15 years ago. The closest planet is just eight million miles away from the star — less than a tenth of the distance from Earth to the Sun. It’s the smallest of the planets as well. The farthest planet is about twice as heavy. And it’s still only a little more than half the Earth-Sun distance. That puts the planet near the inner edge of the star’s “habitable zone” — the region that’s most comfortable for life. And there’s been plenty of time for life to take hold there. Estimates of the star’s age range up to about 10 billion years — twice the age of the Sun. So if life exists there, it could have been around since long before the birth of our own planet. Puppis is low in the south at nightfall on these early April evenings. HD 69830 is at its northeastern corner. That puts it well to the left of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. The Sun travels through the galaxy inside its own “bubble.” The bubble is generated by the Sun’s magnetic field, and it’s filled with charged particles carried by the solar wind. Our knowledge of conditions outside the bubble is limited. But a team of scientists is outlining a mission that would change that. Interstellar Probe would reach a thousand times the distance between Earth and the Sun — seven times farther than any spacecraft has yet ventured. From that range, it would measure magnetic fields, cosmic rays, dust particles, and much more in the interstellar medium — the stuff between the stars. And it would look back toward the solar system to see how the Sun’s bubble interacts with the interstellar medium. So far, our only looks at interstellar space have come from Voyagers 1 and 2. They were launched in 1977 to explore the giant outer planets. They’re still operating today. And both have passed beyond the Sun’s magnetic bubble. Voyager 1 is at 150 times the Earth-Sun distance — by far the most remote working spacecraft ever. Interstellar Probe would use a new “super-booster” and a gravitational kick from Jupiter to reach that distance in about a decade. And it would reach its target range in about 50 years. The mission wouldn’t launch until the 2030s at the earliest. If it takes flight, it could give us our first good look at interstellar space. The company, part of billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Group, today (July 28) revealed the cabin interior of the six-passenger SpaceShipTwo, which is designed to carry people and payloads to suborbital space and back. "When we created Virgin Galactic, we started with what we believed would be an optimal customer experience and then built the spaceship around it," Branson said in a statement today. "We will continue with that ethos as we expand our fleet, build our operations and underpin Virgin Galactic's position as the spaceline for Earth," he said. "This cabin has been designed specifically to allow thousands of people like you and me to achieve the dream of spaceflight safely — and that is incredibly exciting." The interior, which Virgin Galactic devised in collaboration with London-based design agency Seymourpowell, is sleek and stylish. The cabin's color palette "has been carefully curated so that it complements the architecture of the seat, the cabin itself and spacesuits," company representatives wrote in the same statement. "The golden metallics resemble luminous desert sands, blues conjure celestial spaces and teals inspired by the ocean ground travelers back to Earth." SpaceShipTwo is hauled aloft by a big plane called WhiteKnightTwo, which drops the spacecraft at an altitude of about 50,000 feet (15,000 meters). SpaceShipTwo's onboard rocket motor then kicks on, blasting the vehicle up to suborbital space. You can see the cabin for yourself in a new augmented reality (AR) mobile app, which is available for free from both the App Store and Play Store. About 600 people have booked a seat to fly on SpaceShipTwo, at a ticket price (most recently) of $250,000. NASA readies launch of Mars rover to look for signs of past life, collect samples for return to Earth Link: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/nasa-mars-2020-perseverance-rover-launch-preview/ Perseverance tips the scales at 2,260 pounds, is roughly 10 feet long, nine feet wide and seven feet tall. It is equipped with a multi-joint robot arm, stretching seven feet when fully extended, that carries a rotating 99-pound turret at its far end housing a camera, a rock drill and chemical analyzers. The Perseverance mission comes on the heels of two high-profile launches over the last week and a half by China and the United Arab Emirates to send their own probes to Mars, the first interplanetary missions launched by either nation. While other bodies in the solar system might host habitable subsurface oceans and environments where living organisms might be present, "Mars really gives us the best opportunity in the short term to make a significant discovery that will forever change how we think of ourselves and forever change how we think of space exploration in general," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. If evidence of past life is, in fact, found, "I think people are going to be so excited about the discovery and what comes next that that we're going to be doing missions throughout the solar system." "Perseverance is going to drill and prepare samples for return and cache them on the surface of Mars," said Lori Glaze, director of planetary science at NASA Headquarters. "In 2026, a fetch rover will be launched to collect those samples and bring them to a rocket that will launch them into orbit around Mars. Another orbiter will rendezvous and capture those samples for safe delivery to Earth. "If it sounds complicated, it is," she said. "But NASA's investments in developing autonomous robots and landing large payloads on Mars have laid the groundwork for a successful sample return campaign." "Seven minutes of terror" before landing Perseverance will reach Mars on February 18, plunging straight into the atmosphere for white-knuckle descent to Jezero Crater near the river delta and lake bottom scientists are so eager to explore. Slamming into the atmosphere at some 12,100 mph, Perseverance's heat shield will endure temperatures as high as 2,370 degrees as atmospheric friction slows the craft to just under 1,000 mph in four minutes. At that point, at an altitude of about seven miles and a velocity of around 940 mph, a 70.5-foot-wide parachute will unfurl. Astronomers Capture the First Ever Photo of Two Planets Orbiting a Sun-Like Star Link: https://petapixel.com/2020/07/27/this-is-the-first-ever-photo-of-a-multi-planet-system-with-a-sun-like-star/ The European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (ESO VLT) has captured a world's first: the first ever image of two giant exoplanets orbiting a young ‘Sun-like' star TYC 8998-760-1 300 light years away from our own. The photograph could provide important information about the formation of our own solar system. “Even though astronomers have indirectly detected thousands of planets in our galaxy, only a tiny fraction of these exoplanets have been directly imaged,” says co-author Matthew Kenworthy, Associate Professor at Leiden University, adding that “direct observations are important in the search for environments that can support life.” The direct imaging of two or more exoplanets around the same star is even more rare; only two such systems have been directly observed so far, both around stars markedly different from our Sun Indirect observations (such as the Doppler technique, transits, and eclipses) are much more commonly used when searching for exoplanets. The Doppler technique is a good method for discovering exoplanets. It uses the Doppler effect to analyze the motion and properties of the star and planet. The groundbreaking image—which is discussed in detail on the ESO website—is described as “a snapshot of an environment that is very similar to our Solar System, but at a much earlier stage of its evolution.” As the ESO explains, direct observations of exoplanets are exceedingly rare but incredibly important in the search for planets like our own, which might support life. Imaging two exoplanets around the same star is even more remarkable, and capturing an image of two planets orbiting a Sun-like star is a unique accomplishment—a world's first. The two exoplanets—gas giants that are each several times larger than Jupiter—are the two bright dots in the middle and bottom right of the image. Notably, both planets are very far away from their star: one is orbiting at 160 times Earth-Sun distance, and the other at about 320 times Earth-Sun distance. But while this image doesn't show a system similar to ours in the present day, scientists hope that images like this one may shed some light on the early history of our solar system. The most remote member of the solar system yet seen is a ball of ice nicknamed FarFarOut. Estimates say it’s about 13 billion miles from the Sun — 140 times farther than the distance between Earth and the Sun. But that’s right next door compared to the farthest objects of all — the members of the Oort Cloud. It could extend about 1,400 times farther than FarFarOut — more than three light-years in every direction. Although no one has seen it, the orbits of many comets suggest they must have come from such a cloud. The inner part of the cloud begins at about 2,000 times the Earth-Sun distance. It’s shaped like a thick doughnut, and gets thicker near its outer edge. The outer part of the cloud begins at about 20,000 times the Earth-Sun distance. It forms a shell that encircles the Sun. The Oort Cloud is populated by perhaps trillions of chunks of ice and rock. They could be leftovers from the birth of the solar system that were kicked out by the gravity of the giant planets. On the other hand, many of them could have formed around other stars in the cluster that gave birth to the Sun. The stars all exchanged iceballs before they moved apart. Most estimates put the outer edge of the Oort Cloud at up to a hundred thousand times the Earth-Sun distance. But it could extend twice as far. At that range, the gravity of the rest of the galaxy would pull the objects away from the Sun — and out of the Oort Cloud. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

One of the next major steps in SpaceX's plans for true spaceflight will be a 12-mile-high test flight. Sometime between March and September, the company plans to launch its Starship suborbital test vehicle from Boca Chica, Texas. The Starship will travel to an altitude of 12.4 miles, or 20 kilometers. SpaceX will then attempt to land and recover the vehicle. SpaceX revealed the plans in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The company is requesting that the FCC allocate radio frequencies, so it can communicate with the vehicle during the test flight -- that filing is standard practice. As The Verge notes, the test is meant to prove that the Starship rocket can be reused and potentially touch down on the moon or Mars. Daily Astrology-Human Design-Oracle Energy Report with Janet Hickox Yesterday I realized that the sunspot activity is low and that got me to thinking about global warming/global cooling and how we can see that by using Astrology.  Earth, Sun, Ceres and Sunspots and what does that mean for us? We tend to think of Earth as a victim of Humanity, and while I believe we have a responsiblity to live in balance and harmony with our Mother Earth, I give her more credit and power to self-adjust.  Today we're looking at Earth, the Sun and Sunspots and how the Solar Cycle may aid in the heating/cooling of our planet and what can we tell from some of the planetary energies coming up about how Earth will respond?  We're also talking about the upcoming Mars retrograde and how to be prepared.

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Kuiper Belt, a vast region of icy objects at the fringes of our Solar System, beyond Neptune, in which we find the dwarf planet Pluto and countless objects left over from the origins of the solar system, some of which we observe as comets. It extends from where Neptune is, which is 30 times further out than the Earth is from the Sun, to about 500 times the Earth-Sun distance. It covers an immense region of space and it is the part of the Solar System that we know the least about, because it is so remote from us and has been barely detectable by Earth-based telescopes until recent decades. Its existence was predicted before it was known, and study of the Kuiper Belt, and how objects move within it, has led to a theory that there may be a 9th planet far beyond Neptune. With Carolin Crawford Public Astronomer at the Institute of Astronomy and Fellow of Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge Monica Grady Professor of Planetary and Space Sciences at the Open University And Stephen Lowry Reader in Planetary and Space Sciences, University of Kent Producer: Simon Tillotson.

Transcript: Several hundred years ago the astronomer J. Bode noticed a peculiar thing about the spacings and distances of the planets from the Sun. If, for example, you take a sequence of numbers that double, add four to each one and divide by ten you end up almost exactly predicting the distances of the planets from the Sun in units of astronomical units, the Earth-Sun distance. You can see this from the sequence of distances quoted in astronomical units: Mercury at 0.4 AU, Venus at 0.7, Earth at 1.0, Mars at 1.5, then the asteroid belt at 2.8, Jupiter at 5.2, Saturn 9.5, Uranus 19.2, and Pluto at 39.4. This is roughly a sequence of doubling distance. The only planet that doesn’t fit is Neptune, and of course the asteroid belt is not a planet. This peculiar spacing or regularity in the distances of the planets from the Sun is not explained by Newton's law of gravity, but must somehow be to do with the way that the planets formed out of the solar nebula.

2. Ancient Astronomy and Celestial Phenomena

Transcript: The seasons are caused by the tilt of the Earth’s spin axis as it orbits the Sun. If there were no tilt of the axis there would be no seasons because the illumination at every point on the Earth’s surface would not vary throughout the year. In the winter in the Northern Hemisphere, the Northern pole of the Earth tips away from the Sun. So Northern parts of the Earth receive less direct sunlight, and the day is shorter than twelve hours. In the Northern Hemisphere summer, the Northern pole of the Earth tips towards the Sun. The day is longer than twelve hours, and Northern parts of the Earth’s surface receive more direct sunlight and therefore more heating. The cause of the seasons is entirely this tilt. Many people think that the seasons are caused by the changing Earth-Sun distance. Not true. This effect is very small, only a few percent, and in any case it could not possibly explain the fact that the Southern Hemisphere experiences the opposite seasons to our seasons in the Northern Hemisphere.

1. Fundamentals of Science and Astronomy

Transcript: Astronomy contains an enormous range of scales and length as well. The smallest thing that we can routinely measure is a proton; the diameter is 10-15 meters. The size of a hydrogen atom is 10-10 meters. Somewhere in the middle of the huge range are human beings at about 1 meter in round numbers. The next largest scale we might consider is the size of the solar system or the Earth-Sun distance, 1 Astronomical Units, 1011 meters. A lightyear, a typical distance to a nearby star, is five orders of magnitude larger, 1016 meters. The milky way, the system of stars in which we live, is 1021 meters across. And the observable universe containing billions of galaxies is 1026 meters. The full range of scales from the largest to the smallest is 41 orders of magnitude or powers of 10.
