This is a song that really chronicles my healing journey as I've shared it in Unbroken. I literally wrote this in its full form in one sitting which is unusual, and it happened the night I came home from a 12-step meeting and the full impact of my journey through life to that point really hit. The end sum of it is, despite the trauma, the years of sexual abuse, the heartache of growing up torn between parents, the pain I caused myself and others along the way, I wouldn't change a minute of it if I could. I am the man I am today because of it and I have come to love that guy a whole lot. I hope this song strikes something meaningful in you. In this episode, I wanted to give the overview of the process I am about to share with you over the next several episodes.  It may seem like a lot, but as you will see, each step follows naturally from the one preceding it.  I am excited to share this with you! This 6-step process that I call VISAGE (the acronym that contains the 6 steps) was developed as a result of my time in the medical world, my PhD study in Mind-Body Medicine, and mostly from my own healing journey through therapy and spiritual practice and realization.  It is an amalgamation of everything I myself had to accomplish to get where I am today.I have been using this exact model with others to help them heal and get to a more peaceful place in their own skin for over 2 years, but the process itself evolved from consultation I have been doing with others since 2012.  I have never shared this process openly like this before, so I am super excited to offer it to you first! We will go more fully through each of the steps and other pieces that come up along the way as we move through the next several episodes, so please don’t feel like you have to get it all at once.  For me, I just like to know where the road is going before I get on it, so to speak.Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.ComWHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Follow Pete on Instagram @Pete_Is_UnbrokenAlso, if you would, LEAVE A REVIEW so others just like you can find this show and benefit as well. Also, LEAVE COMMENTS on my website so I can answer your questions and bring you the content that will change your life for the better. Oh, and don’t forget to JOIN THE PRIVATE “WE ARE THE UNBROKEN” FACEBOOK GROUP!Thanks so much for listening! As we turn our attention to a specific path of healing, we need to define what healing really is.  In this episode, I set the stage for where we are going over these next several episodes, and offer a new, more practical definition of “healing” that really sets the stage for the work we are about to do together. Yes, healing is about returning to a state or experience of wholeness given whatever it is that you are healing from.  But, this definition never really worked for me in a practical sense.  The definition I offer in this episode holds a lot more juice for me and the people I have worked with.  I think you will connect with it and look forward to hearing your thoughts about it!WHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Also, if you would, LEAVE A REVIEW so others just like you can find this show and benefit as well. Also, LEAVE COMMENTS on my website so I can answer your questions and bring you the content that will change your life for the better. Oh, and don’t forget to JOIN THE PRIVATE “WE ARE THE UNBROKEN” FACEBOOK GROUP!Follow me on Instagram @Pete_Is_UnbrokenThanks so much for listening! One of the key features of early life trauma is being overly harsh and self-critical.  I always say that the voice inside our own heads is usually the biggest a-hole we encounter during a given day.  Few things ramp it up into high gear like being triggered into our brokenness thoughts and feelings. But, when this happens, we are only heaping more pain on top of existing pain.  It's what our abusers did to us, and we continue the cycle internally.  What I show you in this episode is the antidote and how to use it right away to accelerate your own personal healing journey."Where love meets pain, compassion is born." - Jack Kornfield Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Also, if you would, LEAVE A REVIEW so others just like you can find this show and benefit as well. Also, LEAVE COMMENTS on my website so I can answer your questions and bring you the content that will change your life for the better. Oh, and don’t forget to JOIN THE PRIVATE “WE ARE THE UNBROKEN” FACEBOOK GROUP!Thanks so much for listening! It is often said that we are living in a crisis of mental health.  But, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Look at your own life.  If you are anxious, depressed, stressed, or overwhelmed, is it because you are unable to understand your life circumstances, emotions, or consequences of your actions or the consequences of others’ actions upon you?  No.  The problem is quite the opposite.  The problem is that you are painfully aware of how you feel, what you think about, what the circumstances of your life are, what you have been through, and the consequences of your and other people’s actions. So what now?In this episode, Pete clues you in to the REAL problem, and what to do about it.  Also, Pete talks about the medication myth, why most therapy doesn’t result in real lasting, long-term relief, and why even practices like meditation fail to provide the freedom and relief people come to these practices to experience. Best of all, Pete tells you HOW you CAN get lasting relief and step into the life you want.Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Once you understand this, your ability to interact with your own mind skillfully will increase significantly.  This allows you to have a say in what your mind is thinking about, how it is getting triggered, how you react to the people and events of your life, and how you engage in relationships. What you also realize is that every person you encounter has the same thing going on, and you have little control over how they think about or experience you.  This may provoke anxiety or relief, again depending on what is triggered inside of you as you realize this. This episode will serve as a turning point in the show toward how to cultivate a skillful and peaceful relationship with your mind, emotions, and relationships.Referenced:The Four Agreements, by Don Miguel RuizThe Fifth Agreement, by Don Miguel RuizLinks: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXT:If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Most of us Unbrokens find ourselves living lives marked by stress, anxiety, depression, and feeling alone, isolated, or different.  We wind up recreating the toxicity and abuse of our childhoods in some attempt by our own psyche to heal or correct the damage.  But, experience tells us that it doesn't work this way.  Yet, we still do it.The question is why?  In this episode Pete lays out the 3 main reasons you are settling for anything less than the exact life you want and what to do about them.  The idea is that if you address these 3 items, you will not only start to finally heal the wounds of the past, but will finally step into a life that "feels a whole lot like freedom."  And living free, valuing yourself, and giving and receiving the love you deserve is what it means to truly live...UNBROKEN.**Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.ComWHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! We didn’t have a choice of whether or not to be traumatized, abused, bullied, or whatever happened to you that led you here.  But, we do have a choice of what to do now. There is great freedom available if you understand what it is and how to discover it.  For three decades I believed that there was some life people lived that I didn’t get to have because of the trauma and abuse I sustained as a kid.  I fell for the “if only” beliefs: If only I had had a “normal” family growing up; if only I weren’t sexually abused; if only I were better looking, smarter, wealthier, and on and on and on.What I have discovered, shockingly, is gratitude for those experiences that tortured me so for so long.  Why? Because they pushed me faster and harder to the brink of what I could no longer tolerate in myself and my life, and ultimately forced me to make a choice...the choice to Rise.  And that’s the choice that awaits you now. Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXTIf you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Emotions are an important part of our physical makeup.  We often think of them as inconvenient or that we can just ignore or push them away, but nothing could be further from the truth.  The word “emotion” refers to energy in motion. They are a critical part of our existence, and contribute heavily to our states of health and disease.  Additionally, they give us important clues as to how aligned we are with the truth of who we are in our core. You can catalog the whole of your emotional experiences under two categories.  You know them by how they feel. Understanding this helps you be more comfortable and skillful with your own emotions.  And this is key to your feeling comfortable, confident, and content in your own skin. Pete lays it out for you in this episode along with some other high level concepts regarding your emotions. Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com  WHAT TO DO NEXT: If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! What Stress, Anxiety, & Depression Really Are...And What You Can Do About Them

We are seeing an alarming rise in diagnosis of and prescriptions for anxiety and depression.  Even more concerning is that this is happening in younger and younger people. Throw in the impact that chronic stress, anxiety, and depression have on most of today’s most common health issues, then the epidemic proportion of the issue comes easily into sight. It is not my belief that more and more people are just prone to these conditions. While many may have genetic predisposition for anxiety or depression, we know that this is still relative due to the role of epigenetics (how genes are expressed based on environmental factors, both internal and external).  When you consider that the stress response is a survival response, you may ask why you go into survival mode in response to normal events of everyday life.  This leads to the realization that stress is an internal, not an external experience.  So the factors, events, and people in your life are only as stressful as the beliefs you have about them, and the degree to which they trigger your unhealed emotional wounds. When you suppress significant parts of your true self in order to remain lovable, worthy, or acceptable based on your own beliefs about what that means, you become depressed.  When you are constantly on guard to avoid being triggered, or are consistently triggered by your own thoughts, you become anxious. For many, the chemical changes of these conditions are the result of, not the precursor for, the depressed or anxious feelings.  So, what can we do about it? Pete offers some solutions in this episode.Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXT:If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! As a child, you were egocentric. If you were being neglected, abused, or emotionally manipulated to meet the needs of your caregivers, you crafted a story in your little kid mind to help you make sense of the situation. This story involves you as being the source of the problem, because that’s the assumption that lets you feel the most safe and secure. This is the source of our sense of brokenness. In my experience, these stories take one of a few predictable forms which I go through in this episode. Our whole ego structure (i.e. personality) gets set up on this story. You developed all sorts of ideas and beliefs about yourself and the world around you as a way to not have to experience the pain of your own brokenness. The problem is, this belief becomes the lenses through which you perceive and interpret your life, but also the beacon of attraction of people, opportunities, and resources. But it is fixable, and your life will change rapidly when you effectively address it.Links:Sudden Awakening, by Eli Jaxon-BearAccess all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXT:If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! Also, if you would, LEAVE A REVIEW so others just like you can find this show and benefit as well. Also, LEAVE COMMENTS on my website so I can answer your questions and bring you the content that will change your life for the better.Oh, and don’t forget to JOIN THE PRIVATE “WE ARE THE UNBROKEN” FACEBOOK GROUP!Thanks so much for listening! When you are a baby, you just are. You are life incarnate. You have no idea there is any other way to be. And then we start to become social. We learn in our early home environment that me exactly as I am isn’t going to get it done. We then start adapting ourselves to meet the demands of this environment by creating an alternate, or false, self (i.e. the ego). The ego is a fear-based survival tool.Unfortunately, most things we do to feel better in life serve, bolster, or add more and more layers to the false self. The true path to freedom is to go back to the moment where we split off and rediscover who we actually are, and live and grow from this place. This leaves us feeling calm, confident, and content. Most of all, it allows us to live comfortably in our own skin, and what a gift that is.Links:Why Good People Do Bad Things, by James HollisSudden Awakening, by Eli Jaxon-BearAccess all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXT:If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! It has long been said that there is no time like the present.  This is true, but not for the reason most people think. It’s true because there is no time other than the present...ever.  In fact, every moment of your life just feels like “now.” This is the first part of your ticket to freedom.See, being traumatized is like putting your hand on a hot stove burner.  If you get your hand off the burner, but never put it on ice or under cold water, the burning continues long after the hand has been pulled away from the heat.  By hanging onto the feelings, thoughts, and reacting to other non-related situations like you reacted to your trauma, the damage continues long after the abuse or trauma has ended. But, by coming to the present, addressing what is coming up for you now, and realizing that it was only by being tough and courageous that you made it to here, you can stop the ongoing damage and start to heal.  A lot of people think you have to go digging through all the painful memories and feelings to heal. You don’t. You only have to be in tune with what is still being triggered now, because those are the unhealed parts.  How does one do this? Stay tuned as Pete unpacks this exact thing for you. Links: Access all episodes, reach out to Pete, and learn more about the program and its mission at https://WeAretheUnbroken.Com WHAT TO DO NEXT:If you like what you hear, CLICK SUBSCRIBE and let’s do this together! The definition of courage is not lack of fear, rather doing what needs to be done in the face of that fear.  This is what we Unbrokens do EVERY day. For some, it’s walking into a home, school, or other environment where danger constantly lurked.  For others, you were treated pretty well, but felt like you had to be someone else, or just generally like an impostor or fraud. Whatever it is, the fact is you keep showing up and living life, even in the face of these feelings and this uncertainty makes you courageous, not defective.  Pete lays out the argument in this episode. In the end, the parts of you that you feel are damaged, defective, or weak, actually are the armor you learned to wear to survive.  By the fact you are here, you are a survivor. Each of us has our own story, and I share some of mine here as well. Many of you will relate to my constant feeling of lack of belonging anywhere I was in life, and no matter how much I accomplished or achieved, I never really felt worth it.  The fact is, these were just perceptual lenses I was wearing. How do you get beyond this and step into a life of connection, self-love & self-acceptance?  I give you a taste near the end of the show.
