This episode marks a new emphasis for On Becoming. While I have referred to trauma before, here it becomes a lens through which we examine high-control religion (like Evangelicalism). I begin by considering the role of cruelty in Christianity, though a recent article by David French. Next, I turn to Alice Miller's book The Drama of the Gifted Child as a way of thinking about how children are often treated with a lack of respect and thus traumatised. Finally, I turn to James Dobson to work out the ways in which trauma and violence are part of most Evangelical's upbringing.

5 Ways to Work With Your Gifted Child's Teacher - for parents of gifted children, teachers should have the same goal about a child which is ensure he or she is growing as a learner. This would seemingly put both of them on the same page but there are times parents and teachers find themselves at odds with one another. This is why having a positive relationship with your gifted child's teacher is very important so that your child gets the challenge he or she requires for growth. Here are 5 ways you can work with your child's teacher to ensure that this is more likely to happen.
Camille McConnell & Elle Hales: Many people with spiritual gifts through the veil start out having experiences with the other side when they are very young. And more often than not, these experiences are frightening or confusing for our children. Today's discussion tackles how to best support these spiritually sensitive youth by giving them language, context, and faith-promoting dialogue to be able to understand their gifts, set boundaries, and turn off the fear factor. Camille and Elle share personal experiences from their own homes and families with their gifted children, and how they have normalized spirit communication. Embracing these gifts in a positive, ethical, and faith-based manner allows for ideal development and control of them for their whole lives to come. Miller explains how a child will give up who they are to meet the parent's needs. The call is to do the deep work necessary to “cut the tragic link between admiration and love.”

Mary lives in faraway Hong Kong and her son was well ahead of his milestones. He could say words at 6 months, has an IQ in the 140s and knows more than 5 languages. Then in his teens, he started to isolate and became more argumentative. Then he decided he didn't want to go to school (during COVID). He knew something wasn't right right and started down a long road of trying to diagnose and find the right combination of medications. After a while of helping her son navigate through issues, Mary noticed she was mentally and physically exhausted. Her doctor prescribed her two hours, every day that she has apart from her family. This two hours allowed Mary to become healthier and actually become more present for her family. This is a great episode for someone that has started their journey with their Childs mental illness. Also, if you are struggling with self-care you can learn a bunch!

Chapter 1 What's The Drama of the Gifted Child"The Drama of the Gifted Child" is a book written by Alice Miller, a Swiss psychanalyst and psychotherapist. It was originally published in 1979, and its full title is "The Drama of the Gifted Child: The Search for the True Self." The book focuses on the psychological development and struggles of exceptionally sensitive and highly intelligent individuals, often referred to as "gifted children." Miller explores how childhood experiences, particularly emotional neglect or abuse, can shape the adult lives and personalities of these individuals. She argues that such individuals often face challenges in forming their own identity and authentic self due to the early trauma they encounter. Through the book, Miller offers insights into the healing process and emphasizes the importance of reconnecting with one's true self to attain emotional well-being.Chapter 2 Why is The Drama of the Gifted Child Worth ReadThe Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller is worth reading for several reasons:1. Miller explores how even seemingly ideal childhoods can have hidden damaging elements that impact a person's development and relationships.2. Emphasis on self-healing: The author encourages readers to acknowledge and address the emotional wounds from their childhood. By advocating for self-acceptance and self-compassion, Miller guides individuals towards healing and breaking patterns of dysfunction.3. Clear and accessible writing: Despite addressing complex psychological concepts, Miller's writing is clear and accessible to a wide range of readers. She effectively communicates her ideas and experiences, making it easier for readers to relate to the subjects discussed.4. Relevance for personal growth and self-reflection: The book allows readers to reflect on their own childhood experiences and helps them make connections to their present-day lives. It enables personal growth by providing tools for self-reflection and offering insights into how early experiences shape one's adult life.5. Validation and empowerment: One significant aspect of this book is its validation of individuals' experiences who have undergone childhood trauma. By identifying and describing common patterns and dynamics, Miller empowers readers to understand that they are not alone in their struggles.6. Impact on parenting and fostering healthy relationships: The Drama of the Gifted Child helps readers recognize and break the cycle of dysfunctional parenting by understanding the impact of their own childhood experiences. It offers insights into how to establish healthier relationships, both as parents and as partners.Overall, The Drama of the Gifted Child is worth reading because it offers a compassionate perspective on childhood trauma, encourages personal growth and healing, and provides practical knowledge to foster healthier relationships.Chapter 3 The Drama of the Gifted Child Summary"The Drama of the Gifted Child" by Alice Miller is a book that explores the long-term effects of childhood trauma and the ways in which it can shape an individual's adult life. Miller argues that many adults who were considered "gifted" or high-achieving as children often experienced emotional neglect or abuse in their early years. The book begins by examining the concept of the "gifted child," referring to those who were praised for being talented, intelligent, or exceptionally mature for their age. Miller suggests that this praise often masked the child's true emotional needs and prevented them from developing a healthy sense of self. Instead,...

Addicts are seekers. What do we seek? Transcendence. The mystical. The sacred. Why do we seek the type of experiences that are outside what we call ordinary consciousness? Rather than look for answers out of pure scientific curiosity, we're more likely seeking a way out of suffering, albeit in addictive ways. Yet, when we turn to twelve step programs for refuge, we're often told that suffering is optional. It's a popular meme, but is there any truth to it? In another solo episode of the 'cult'ure series, we take a deep-dive into childhood conditioning and explore how ‘family systems' might shape susceptibility to influence. Candice shares a recent ah-hah around her 'triggers' and how allowing herself to feel has been helping her to step outside of culty indoctrination. Complacency is discussed, as the near enemy of mindfulness and as a roadblock to authentic self-awareness. Inspired by the work of John Bradshaw, Candice shares how to tell the difference between healthy and toxic shame, and how the latter reinforces 'the cult persona,' and a tendency to act as if we are more or less than human. She then shares what it's like living just outside of Sedona - a new-age mecca that wreaks of 'cult'ural appropriation. Find out the history behind Sedona's claim to fame - the energetic vortexes, and what the spiritual ego has to do with it all. Finally, be sure to stick around, because the episode wraps with the poignant (and anonymous) sharing of former Org members' stories. Purity culture is reality checked, orthorexia is defined, and a wake-up call is inspired by the work of courageous body-positive activists who are calling out the cults of ableism and anti-fat bias. Dr. Amy is on a mission to help families raise healthy and happy kids by paving a more simple and natural path to parenting. We live in a culture of wanting to optimize each part of parenthood and childhood, but this often leads us to believe that we aren't doing enough. The goal of motherhood shouldn't be perfection, but rather a focus on what we are learning along the way. I know I'm grateful for the mistakes I've made as a mother because sometimes the benefit is learning from the things that didn't work. The mentality surrounding our thoughts of, "Am I doing enough?" tends to trickle down to our kids and affects them and their mental health as well. Former Nickelodeon child-star Jeannette MucCurdy's provocatively titled new book “I'm Glad My Mom Died” became a near-instant New York Times bestseller after its release in August 2022. The Audible version of the book is narrated by Jeanette herself and details her struggles with disordered eating, alcohol addiction, OCD, unstable relationships and – most notably – her extremely complicated relationship with her codependent, overbearing, and abusive mother. One review of the book on Goodreads states, “This isn't just a look at how horrifying Hollywood is (especially for child stars) but it's also a harrowing depiction of how manipulative love can be. The way a parent's all-consuming love for their child can be weaponized and watered to grow into something this vile and life-altering is absolute insanity.” In this episode, I discuss my reflections on the book. Through dissecting Jeannette's experiences she so bravely shared in this memoir, we'll dive into what we can learn about parentification, enmeshment (also known as “emotional incest”) and the devastating impact these kinds of toxic family dynamics can have on childhood development that carry on far into adulthood. CW: child abuse, disordered eating, terminal illness (breast cancer), hoarding, depictions of OCD, depictions of bulimia/purging, gaslighting, emotional manipulation.
When a child is particularly emotionally intelligent, and a parent is particularly emotionally vulnerable, an inversion of the typical relationship can occur where the child devotes themselves to meeting the parent's needs rather than the other way around. This can lead the child to lose touch with their own wants and needs – with their authentic self – which then leads to underlying feelings of worthlessness, uncertainty, and self-alienation in adulthood.Extreme versions of this pattern are known as parentification, but mild to moderate versions are surprisingly common. On today's episode of Being Well, Dr. Rick and Forrest Hanson explore how we can heal from the effects of these difficult early experiences and rediscover who we truly are. This material was completely eye-opening for me, and it's one of my favorite episodes we've ever produced.Want to learn more? Parenting is difficult. It is even more challenging when you are trying to be the best, most well-rounded parent you can be but you are still carrying the generational trauma that has been passed onto you by your own family. The good news is that it's never too late to reset your approach to parenting, and today's guest is a sage expert who can help guide you along this journey. Katherine Sellery is the founder of Conscious Parenting Revolution, an organization that helps parents become more conscious and thoughtful about how they communicate with and raise their children. In today's episode, Katherine speaks about the challenging relationship she had with her own mother and the journey she went through to free herself from it. Our conversation also covers the power of celebrating mistakes, why we need to become aware of our trigger points, and the difference between punitive and restorative justice in the context of parenting. Addressing your past can be a complex process, but with a strong support system and experts like Katherine, it is a rewarding endeavor like no other. Key Points From This Episode: How our upbringing impacts the way that we parent our own children The percentage of children who are able to overcome the psychological differential between an adult and a child Why it is problematic to raise children to be obedient and compliant A real-world example that epitomizes the concept of “the tragic expression of an unmet need” The way we should react when to a trigger that someone activates in us Katherine explains the difference between punitive and restorative justice and how these approaches relate to parenting. How we can gain control of our thoughts and feelings so that we can subsequently gain control of our actions The book that helped Katherine understand her own upbringing Tragedies that Katherine has experienced in her life and how she responded to them Generational trauma that Tracy has become aware of in her family Work that Katherine had to do to separate herself from her generational trauma Why Tracy and Katherine both have baby pictures of themselves on their desks The value of having difficult conversations with our children, and celebrating their (and our own) mistakes Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Conscious Parenting Revolution Katherine Sellery Katherine Sellery on LinkedIn Katherine Sellery on Instagram The Drama of The Gifted Child by Alice Miller A Course in Miracles by Helen Schucman Potential to Powerhouse Tracy Holland on Instagram
