Hope you enjoy another letter episode that includes the kata (form, dance) Empi Ha and so much more. As usual we refer to many subjects that we've discussed on past episodes. I received a copy of this poem in school - a long time ago. The other day, we were talking about it and decided to bring the conversation to the podcast. Fumio Demura is known for many things in Martial Arts. We did a biography of him back in 2020. Here's the link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5982394What fun we had watching this movie, laughing and snacking. Somehow, in our review we mentioned Master Joe Hess. First off - an Uke is a Japanese word meaning partner in Karate training. Have I got your interest? This episode has stories from Hanshi Malanoski and some feedback from followers of Hanshi Ray Batlle's Facebook page. I thank them both. We also tell a few stories of our own and maybe clear up some confusion for people who have just started training. After you listen, get in touch and tell us your stories of good and bad partnering experiences. As far as tagging episodes into these notes - nothing really fits. But I decided that consistency is a characteristic of a good uke. So, here's our episode on that:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/10255747And another tangent you might find interesting is our episode on the saying "Karate is for Everyone, but Everyone is not for Karate. We're joined by Kim to talk about another history of female warriors. This one is full of myths, legends and of course controversies. While I was writing these notes, I decided to look back at other episodes we've recorded female fighters in history. Our first one was back in 2020, where we were introduced to 2 Japanese women fighters. Here's the link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/3227506There have been quite a few episodes. I especially like this one we did on women defending themselves at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. Here's that link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/5247724At the end of this episode, we hear a listener mail from Hanshi Tracy Seymour - a modern female warrior. We have two guests for this episode. I'm thankful to Sifu Jones from the UK who opens the show and to Shihan McKinnon who takes it home for us. Their input is amazing and appreciated. With Sifu Jones we talked about basics. That got us to thinking about the movie Budo. Since we did an episode on that, I'll tag it here: https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/9007481With Shihan we discussed everything from the importance of repetition to the need to focus. Here's a few episodes with Shihan that cover those subjects in more detail. This episode is a listener request. Setting and maintaining boundaries, like so many things we've discussed on this show, is a lifelong responsibility (to yourself?).When the request came through, the person didn't specify physical safety or internal challenges. So we tackled both. However, we've talked about physical safety quite a few times. Here are some of the episodes. Our first episode was back in 2019! Here's the link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/2089278In this episode we tackled wrestling in reality situations with our friend Shihan MdKinnon:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/9680753And here is our 3rd episode on Safety. Welcome to a second look at Wabi Sabi: a Japanese philosophy that I'm going to define too simply as a celebration of imperfection. In this episode we look at 3 different books about the subject. Our first look at this, a favorite subject, was back in 2020. My favorite memory of that recording was our guests, Sensei Tracey and Sensei Sam. Interested? This is a moving episode. Don't miss it. We got the original idea for this episode from a new friend, Hanshi Tracey Seymour. We met her, and interviewed her, a few months ago. Regular listeners know how much we enjoy interviewing new friends. Hanshi Batlle felt like an old friend from the beginning of our conversation. Thank you Sir! I added the movie you mentioned, Five Fingers of Death, to our list of movies to watch and discuss. Thanks for the suggestion. For our listeners that aren't familiar with which kata go with which system. No worries. The story still works. If you want more information about kata, we did an entire episode on it. You can listen to it here:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/13912400Hanshi also brings up the idea of balancing soft and hard. We did an episode on balance based on a saying that Master Nick Brown shared many years ago. Thank you Sir. Today, Landyn joins us for a variation on Letter Episodes. Are we 'over' the top? Listen to find out. At one point Landyn quotes the term "frog march" and none of us knew what it referred to....so I looked it up. Turns out it's just moving a person with their hands behind their back. This episode is wonderful stories by our magnificent guests that just didn't fit into their original episodes, peppered with a few of our mistakes and a lot of our laughter. Time to have some laughs with Sensei Randy as we review (spoiler alert) a Great movie from the 1980s. We'll move to the 90s for the next review, but today we talk about a cult classic. And how it didn't make money at the theater, but did later on. Here's a weird factoid: when I was searching on line for a graphic, I came across action figures of Jack Burton and other characters. Also, Kim Cattrall is in this movie. Sorry Kim, that we didn't get to mentioning that in the episode. Too much talk about the fighting! We do, however, reference Conan the Barbarian. What fun to start 2025 with Landyn available to record. We had a blast talking about words that start with 'S'. Somewhere in the conversation we discussed the anxiety you feel when you're starting something new. We tackled that in 2020. (Btw Landyn - we were both wrong, our guest was Sensei Jim - Hi Sensei). Here's a link to that episode:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/2389178Also, we returned to a subject we have visited in two different ways; consequences. Here's the episode we did on that in 2023:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/12439186And, about 10 years ago, we made one of our first YouTube videos - 3 songs for little kids having trouble adjusting to life in school. Landyn is back on the show - Yay! I found an old saying I'd written and it turned into a fun conversation with Landyn, myself, and Sensei Jackie. We cover a lot. Today we meet Hanshi George Alexander. I love history and meeting new people, so this interview was a perfect fit. Hanshi Alexander had more stories than could fit into 25 minutes. Back in 2020 we recorded this episode on axes. Landyn hates listening to his voice back then, but he was just as spontaneously funny then as he is now. Or should I say Punny!! Episodes about the history and use of weapons are some of my personal favorites. We think you'll like it too, so enjoy listening and let us know. When I got the idea for this episode, it was from something I heard Grandmaster Urban say. Who better to have as a guest to add Grandmaster Urban's take than Hanshi Malanoski. Therefore, although we do get to the point, we're also regaled with wonderful stories about Grandmaster Urban. It's amazing to hear and for that I thank Hanshi. Welcome to another conversation with our friend Sifu Rob Jones. We're discussing booby traps, eye patches and newspapers...as weapons. We first interviewed Sifu Jones back in 2021. Here's that interview:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/episodes/8931796Back to today's episode. When we were talking about newspapers, we mentioned that newsprint was traditionally made with cyanide. I looked it up and newsprint (among a lot of other things) is still made with cyanide!!Also, we talk about Xi'an's tomb (read 'Han" here). We did a whole episode on that with Sifu Jones. Can you believe we've made it through 5 years of recording? Wow. We want to thank all our guests and all our listeners for all the fun, information, and adventure. This week we review the book Zen in the Martial Arts by Joe Hyams. I never tire of saying - we had fun! Listen, read and share your thoughts. Needless to say we touch on many subjects. Here's a few: Mid episode we talk about Sensei Tracey's son Max and his relationship with Monasteries. We talked with Max twice on the show. The first time was back in 2020. A Budoka Odyssey is the title of the book by our guest Shihan TD McKinnon. It's always fun to talk with Shihan, and this is no exception. We talk about where to buy the book - and of course Amazon is there, but so is a site called Lulu.com. Shihan has been a guest many times. I'm going to attach 2 of them here. Back in 2021 interviewing Shihan was a wonderful way for us to meet. Finally, Landyn has returned for a day to record. We took this opportunity to catch up with his adventures. We hope you like hearing about them as much as Sensei Jackie and I did. Since September is a 5 week month-and therefore a 'rerun' month, I thought that this was a nice fit with 2 of the episodes of August - The Last Samurai battle and man. This episode doesn't need much explanation. Don't forget, though, that we ARE on insta @ wildcatdojoconversations. Hey - can I use the word 'remastered' for our reruns. This episode is a follow up on the Satsuma Rebellion - which we aired 2 weeks ago and is tagged below. We enjoyed looking at the life of Saigo Takamori with Sensei Randy. This week we're joined by Matthew and Kim to discuss The Martial Arts by Laura Scandiffio – a kid's book. This book was fun to read and even more fun to talk about. So many subjects came up during the recording because the book is an introduction to almost every style of Martial Art. Since we've discussed many of them on this show, here are links to a to a few episodes:Can you believe we found a quote from Sun Tzu's The Art of War? Here's our episode:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/12656331And we discuss Jigoro Kano. Episode here:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/10515380And we bring up Wing Chun. (I told you this book introduced readers to many things.):https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/8153789Last, but certainly not least, Ms. Scandiffio discusses the elements – as have we. Enjoy this conversation with Sensei Lydia, Sensei Jackie and myself on this eye opening piece of history. One thing I got wrong is this: I referred to the mini series on Hulu as The Last Samurai, but it is actually a remake of a mini series from the 80s called Shogun. Oops! Hope it doesn't insult your ears. If you make it through, please think about supporting us by using the link below and thanks! Taiko is a Japanese term for any kind of drum. Over time the art of drumming, like other art forms, became a world wide phenomenon. I was lucky enough to make a friend of one such artist - Ben. Sensei Jackie and I were extra lucky to go to their dojo and see many of their drums, meet a student - Orion and get this interview. I know you're going to hear our joy as we share our mutual love of the arts. Since we really didn't mention any old episodes, I decided one that is a good fit was our episode on Martial Arts that weren't combative. We have fun recording this episode on a saying by Matsamura Sokon. Our guest is Hanshi Steven Malanoski. Jic you're not familiar with him. I'm including his interviews with us from 2021. This archived episode from our Wrestling series is worth listening to for so many reasons. If you're hearing it for the first time or as a repeat, you laugh and learn. A fun 20 minutes that includes Sensei James as our guest. The first time he was on we discussed Miyamoto Musashi. Thanks for checking out today's episode. The words we're discussing are: To be good, find a good teacher, to master teach. This is something I heard Master Kelljchian say decades ago. Sensei Derek joins us today to mess around with the concept. We had fun - as we always do. Before we got into this weeks episode we discuss 2 pieces of listener mail we got regarding the episode on Planning your Work. In case you missed that episode. Here it is:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/15115807O course, the conversation on teaching, learning and growing touched on ego. We ran an episode on ego back in 2020. So....it is on the podcast thread and on the YouTube uploads. We love doing remnants from past episodes. This one has so many stories! All the episodes referenced were in the last 6 months - except during the word bloopers when we have quite a few from a weird weapons episode from last Dec. Here it is if you missed it:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/14134852A couple of other episodes that we reference are: the wonderful interview with our 90 year old karateka/friend Thelma:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/14443462And our review of Master Kelljchian's book of S.E.T.https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/14392302Does this make you want to be on the show with us? What fun we had interviewing Ms. Kapp. Between her podcast (Meticulous Moments), her motivational speaking and her training in Shotokan , the conversation was lively and went to fast. Speaking of Shotokan, we have discussed Gichin Funikoshi a few times. Here's one of them:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/10908006Now back to Juanita Kapp. Her schedule is so busy that she had to do the interview while traveling. Don't let the outside noise distract you from the laughter filled conversation. Ms. Kapp was a joy to interview. Thanks for checking it out and please remember our link below to support the show (if you can!) Chinese weapons with Sifu Jones is on the menu today. Our first interview with Sifu was back in 2021. Here's a link in case you missed it:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/8931796Sifu talks about swords and spears he uses and owns. I put a video of him on our twitter (and insta) page. Picking ones to link was tricky, but here's one we did on the Ax:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/6894266And one more.
