Martial Artist and Hollywood action star Jeff Speakman joins Brad to share his journey from the cold winters of Chicago as a springboard diver and gymnast, working with legendary martial artists Lou Angel and Ed Parker, adapting Kenpo to grappling, what it was like to work with the legendary Ed Parker on the set of The Perfect Weapon, surviving stage 4 throat cancer, and much much more... Jeff shares his beliefs on America's decline, and preparing the next generation of martial artists. If you are a martial artist, this is an exciting interview with a martial arts legend, who didn't let Hollywood seduce him, carrying on the legacy of Ed Parker. Brad also shares his journey in Kempo Jujitsu. This is a fun episode. About Jeff Speakman: Jeff Speakman is best known from his martial arts films The Perfect Weapon, Street Knight, The Expert and Land of The Free. Jeff started his athletic career very early in life. Training and competing as a gymnast during the school year and as a springboard diver in the summer consumed much of his young life. He has earned black belts in American kenpo karate and Japanese Goju-Ryu. As one of the last students of the Grand Master of Kenpo, Ed Parker, Jeff Speakman has carved out his own niche with the art, adapting Kenpo to modern fighting styles by adding grappling to the mix. As he stated "taking Kenpo to the ground was no easy task...but we did it." He calls this next level Kenpo 5.0. Jeff has been inducted into the Black Belt Hall of Fame, the World Martial Arts Hall of Fame and the Masters Hall of Fame with over 50 Kenpo 5.0 dojos (training centers), in over 20 countries. Jeff and his wife Kim reside in Las Vegas. Host: Brad Szollose --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/awakenednation/support

While typing this I wanted to say a bad pun along the lines of "Welcome to a wild episode", but thought better of it. Meanwhile, this episode really is wild - so let us know if you enjoy it. We have Sensei Jay and that's always a plus. Also, we cover so much that we even mention Kenpo and Ed Parker. Of course we did an episode on that. Here's the link:https://www.buzzsprout.com/477379/6535051 Also, at one point we're talking about snakes, and the percentage that are poisonous. I looked up that statistic and we were pretty accurate. Only 10 - 15% of snakes world wide are poisonous to humans! (Good to know.)I'll finish with some big news - You can now support us personally with a small donation (every dollar helps - no kidding). You can use pay pal or any credit card. I would appreciate your occasional support. Thanks!! Please click the link below:Support the showAnd of course support our sponsor Honor Athletics. What are his crimes? Depends on who you ask, what you read and then trying to discover the truth within all of that mess. This broadcast begins with me waiting to be given access into the hospitals video conference room and then James shares is story for the next 30 minutes. There are very few questions asked by Joshua however the ones he does ask provide interesting responses. In 1984, Peter Honigmann started his journey in martial arts in Kenpo Karate under Grandmaster John McSweeney, a pioneer in reality-based self-defense. John served in multiple branches of the military, was one of Ed Parker's first black belts, introduced Kenpo Karate to Ireland, worked as a bodyguard for the Kennedy family, and opened a martial arts studio in Elmhurst, Illinois (which is still teaching his style of Kenpo). Peter was drawn to John's powerful style of teaching, which focused on simple and effective self-defense. Peter trained in Kenpo for 12 years under John, John's student Tom Saviano, and Mr. Saviano's student Steve Rigitano. After John passed away Peter purchased the rights to Street Karate from his widow. He took the book and has annotated with notes from his own self-defense prospective, as well as adding some legal considerations. While not an entirely original book, it could be very useful to people looking for some hints and tips on learning self-defense, and is a unique book when it comes to talking about real situations where martial arts were used in self-defense. Born in England, Martin Wheeler walked into his first training hall at the age of nine, a Judo class at the local YMCA in his hometown of Paignton, Devon. At age sixteen he began training in the Hawaiian street fighting system of Ed Parker's Karate, at the ‘doorman's academy' in the same town. There, he was introduced to Kenpo in bare-knuckle sparring sessions. A year later at the age of seventeen, he began working at the local clubs as a bouncer in a town renowned for its late-night street fighting. A profession he continued for the next ten years in clubs from London to the U.S. Forged from his experiences, twenty years later, after also studying Boxing, Judo, Thai-boxing and Filipino weapons fighting in his desire to find the most effective street fighting system, Martin met Vladimir Vasiliev, the former Russian Special Operative demonstrating Systema at a seminar and knew he had witnessed something strange, unique and absolutely lethal in any environment. After over two decades of training in Systema Martin now teaches his highly effective combat solutions from his training facility at The Academy Beverly Hills. Today, Wade interviews Phil Des Rosiers. Phil was born and raised in Marin County, California. He began training in the Martial Arts in ‘87 after he got his start from making a wrong turn down an alleyway on 15th and Mission, San Francisco. A man suddenly accosted and attacked him when his boss — James “Kimo” Aven — clotheslined the perpetrator, then turned to him said, “Have I ever told you about Kenpo Karate?” Kimo was a 3rd-degree black belt right under Ed Parker, trained with Ralph Castro and Rick Alemany, and was friends with Danny Inosanto and Bruce Lee. Phil took Kimo's suggestion; he walked into the Marin Kenpo Karate Dojo, and never looked back. Phil's next big milestone in the Martial Arts happened in '08. He was training dads in a local park for free, when his buddy Mike made the suggestion of going back to his roots and starting a new company. It was that same day that he also met his current partner and co-owner, Robin Artegiani, a retired Chief Investigator for the Marin County's DEA Office. Together, they started the Marin Dojo. In this episode, Phil talks about his business model for Marin Dojo, the inspiration, and motivation he needed to begin his business, his philosophies, where he sees the future of Martial Arts headed, and most importantly, walking the fine line of staying true to the Martial Arts while still making a profit. Phil has pride in keeping their business model simple and their prices low — because, as he puts it, “It's not about the money; it's about the community.” Key Takeaways: [1:02] Phil introduces himself and how he got started in Martial Arts. [4:08] Working in finance and the mortgage business before owning his Martial Arts studio [5:22] The inspiration he received to startup his Dojo [8:46] Phil's unique business model [10:47] Phil's lack of ego [12:08] Similar to last episode's guest, Brannon Beliso, Phil talks about his business model and the sense of community in the Martial Arts.
