Michael Kennedy, producer, director, and creator of Creative Action Unlimited, talks with Hudson Mohawk Magazine's Andrea Cunliffe about the opening of the new production "RELEASE: Incarceration and Re-Entry," an original multimedia production about incarceration and re-entry from the perspectives of recently incarcerated individuals and those who love them. Michael Kennedy uses theater to bring awareness of social justice issues to the Capital Region and beyond. 'RELEASE' is playing at the Meader Little Theatre, at Russell Sage College in Troy. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays, May 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30pm with additional 2:00pm matinees on May 6 and 13.
In 2013, British-Australian writer Lucy Christoper published her debut novel 'Stolen'. An award-winning YA novel, 'Stolen' is the story of 16 year-old Gemma Toombs who is kidnapped from Bangkok Airport and held captive in the Australian outback by her capture Tyler McFarlane. This year, the long-awaited companion to this incredible story was published by Text Publishing. 'Release' explores Gemma's journey as an adult survivor and her quest to discover the truth about her complicated relationship with Ty. A gripping psychological thriller/court-room drama that had me utterly hooked from start to finish. Lucy and I enjoyed a wide-ranging, fascinating chat about this novel earlier this year.
This week the Crusaders dive deep into "Release" by Pearl Jam and make their movie picks based on the song. Elskavon is the ambient / neo-classical project of Minneapolis composer Chris Bartels. 'Release' is the winter version of a double album, the follow-up to the 2012 debut 'Movements In Season.'Ambient music has always been able to create opportunities for listeners to interpret emotions in a variety of ways, and any one song can mean something so different from one set of ears to the next. For Chris, inspiration for these songs arrives in a similar fashion. It comes from all sorts of angles - love and friendship, hope and doubt, life and death.Residents of Minnesota know the drastic difference of the four calendar seasons all too well. Summer in the “land of 10,000 lakes” is overwhelmingly beautiful, while winter is, to say the least, frigid. While certainly bound to be diverse in interpretation, 'Release' was originally inspired by the many Minnesota winters Chris has experienced. It is the first of a double album. A spring version will follow, after a predictably chilled few months.Whatever the interpretation, whatever the emotions evoked, whatever the meaning perceived, listeners are encouraged to allow Elskavon's Release to become a soundtrack to the freedom of letting go and the beauty of holding on.
John Scott Lawton, English Language Coach, interviews Miriam Barnaby, Slovak poet, English Language Teacher and writer about what inspires her to create poetry in English. Is all poetry meant to be shared with others? Will poetry see a resurgence given the dramatic and beautiful oratory of Amanda Gorman's, 'The Hill We Climb' at President Joe Biden's inauguration ceremony? Was that poetry, prose, spoken word ... or does it not matter? Miriam's poems are deeply personal, sensual and layered ... revealing just a little more of themselves at each reading or listen. Hear Miriam read her own poems such as 'Release', 'Nails', 'Tea Shop' and 'Succinctly' and consider whether you have something you wish to say ... to yourself or others. John Lawton is an English Language Coach and Teacher, working online out of Bratislava, Slovakia. Having lived in many different countries, John has a rich and deep understanding of how the English Language can be used to unite and to divide us, in equal measure.
