AWOLNATION is an American alternative rock band fronted by singer, songwriter and producer Aaron Bruno. The band had a tremendous crossover hit on their hands with the single 'Sail' from their debut album 'Megalithic Symphony' (2011) and the success continued with follow-up album 'Run' in (2015). We caught up with Bruno to talk about his latest, and perhaps his last, offering: 'The Phantom Five' (2024) We also spoke about fatherhood, going independent again, the decline of the superstar, playing with sound, artistic freedom, and a lot more! At long last, two of the three buffoons that make up Shit Talk Reviews finally sat down to talk about what will be certainly considered one of the best albums of 2024: And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth from new LA based powerhouse The Barbarians Of California. The album smacks of rock, metal, punk, hardcore, thrash and has a few surprises thrown in here and there just to keep us all on our toes. The band's lineup brings serious pedigree to the table with Eric Stenman on guitar and bass (Tinfed, 35 year studio guru as engineer, producer, mixer and stunt guitarist,) Aaron Bruno (singer of AWOLNATION, Under The Influence Of Giants, Home Town Hero,) Isaac Carpenter (drummer for AWOLNATION, Gosling, Loaded,) and Zach Irons (guitarist for AWOLNATION.) They also brought in Tim McIlrath from Rise Against and Daryl Taberski of Snapcase for guest appearances. While you might immediately assume that with such an AWOLNATION heavy lineup that The Barbarians Of California would be a similar band, you'd be wrong. There are certainly some AWOLNATION seasonings sprinkled on the album, but this record is a definite departure from that. Aaron's vocals are frantic and unhinged while maintaining perfect control, the guitar work by Eric and Zack is groovy, thrashy and pristine and Isaac's drumming is powerful and lays a heavy heartbeat for this new breath that's been pumped into our musical lungs. The band brings serious heavy to this album and it's a fantastically refreshing listen. It covers a bunch of genres, but stays cohesive throughout. It absolutely warrants listening to. You should also check out the interview the Shit Talk guys did with Eric Stenman a few weeks back to get deeper into the band and the album. The Shit Talk fellas had a very enjoyable chat with the super talented studio engineer, producer and mixer Eric Stenman. Eric has been working in the music industry for over 35 years, both playing bass and guitar and running studios, wearing all sorts of different hats along the way. Going back to 2011, he has worked with Aaron Bruno and Los Angeles based band AWOLNATION. In recent years, Eric and Aaron connected with some heavy material that Eric had been working on in the shadows. Fortunately for all of us, we now get to hear what they came up with, and it is absolutely stellar. The Barbarians Of California have smashed onto the scene with the release of their first album And Now I'm Just Gnashing My Teeth. It's packed with all kinds of musical flavors from punk to metal and thrash, punctuated by some moments of surprising calm. Fellow AWOLNATION members Isaac Carpenter on drums and Zach Irons on guitar round out the band's lineup and they've delivered a heavy, super energetic, slammin' first album. We're all hoping that they hurry up and tour this album and then release more material! You can follow The Barbarians Of California on Instagram at @barbariansofca 00:00 Intro01:25 The origins of The Barbarians Of California05:40 The band's sound08:40 Potential future plans for TBoC10:50 Balancing heavy music while working on other styles of music13:20 The nostalgia of working in an old school fashion16:50 Finding new music to listen to19:52 Bazooka! In this episode, we delve into the fascinating journey of a band that emerged from the fusion of passion and persistence. Our story begins a decade ago with Eric Stenman, who was writing heavier music that he never imagined would reach the public eye. Eric's early musical journey intertwined with Aaron Bruno's in the late '90s through their shared love for hardcore music. Despite their separate creative paths —Eric focusing on music production and Aaron eventually forming Awolnation—they would later find a way to create a band together (although they have been working together for years with Aaron writing for Awolantion and Eric producing all of the records). After years of Eric leaning more towards production and not playing much instrumentals, Aaron, having heard some of Eric's latest work, was impressed and wanted to continue on other songs. This pivotal moment led to the formation of a new band that stands apart from traditional music paths. Unlike many bands that spend years on the road in a van, this group is driven by their love for hardcore music and are doing it because their passions align. With four songs already released, including the recent track "Bazooka" on August 2, listeners can expect some exciting surprises and new directions from this band. The new record will be out on October 4th In our conversation with Eric, we also explored his impressive career as a producer. Since 1997, he's avoided the day job to build a notable resume working with bands like Deftones, Weezer, Thrice, Dashboard Confessional, Senses Fail, and Awolnation. We asked Eric to reflect on his experiences with these iconic groups, providing listeners with insightful anecdotes and behind-the-scenes stories. Tune in to hear about the origins of the band, their unique approach to music, and Eric's reflections on his storied career in the industry.

In this episode, Aaron Bruno discusses the creation of AWOLNATION's 2011 hit single "Sail," offering an inside look at his songwriting process during a challenging period in his life. Aaron shares how he was in a very low place when he wrote the song, using it as an opportunity to break free from traditional songwriting constraints and express himself creatively. He highlights how the track's signature booming synth bass and its honest address of A.D.D. in the lyrics were ahead of their time. This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has experienced rejection or for aspiring songwriters feeling held back by limitations, as Aaron's journey underscores the power of perseverance and innovation in music. From his studio in the coastal mountains, Aaron Bruno of AWOLNATION joins Johnny to learn about his latest heavier project, The Barbarians of California. To kick things off, the boys connect quickly over fatherhood and surfing. Aaron shares a little about his home studio and how he uses it to record different parts of songs. The conversation dives into commonalities in finding fellow band mates around the same age to understand same era of pop culture and get each other's joke references. We learn why AWOLNATION was the project that finally hit for Aaron in his 30s after two failed bands. Aaron shares how his father was very instrumental in his mastery within the music industry. Humble beginnings are shared of filling Henry Cavill's shoes as a busy boy leads to the hard hitting question of, “How does Superman bone down?” From 80s pop from his mother, to the jazz from his father, and then rounding it with his brother introducing NWA and Pantera, Aaron shares the very broad range of musical styles that will forever influence him. We learn that hip hop is what made Aaron a Raiders fan and anyone who brings up Raider Nation around Johnny is destined to turn the conversation to football talk. Awolnation's "Sail" was one of the biggest songs in the world in 2011. So far, the song has achieved 1.5 billion streams and is certified Diamond - that doesn't happen by accident. This anonymous (and humble) musician was all of a sudden on every radio station and thrust into the spotlight after achieving a small deal with Red Bull Records. His 5th album is now out, a collection of covers all recorded in isolation during Covid - "My Echo, My Shadow, My Covers And Me." This features some high profile vocalists: Jewel on "Take a Chance on Me" Beck - "Eye in the Sky" Branden Boyd & Portugal The Man - "Wind of Change" Taylor Hanson - "Material Girl" The question is, did Covid help with access to these vocalists or the opposite?? This is Awolnation, on The Rider with Becko

On this episode, Shane selects Awolnation's 2020 release Angel Miners and the Lightning Riders. At first, Trevor wasn't sure it was his style, but before he knew it, he couldn't help singing along to these 10 incredibly catchy tunes created by lead singer and songwriter Aaron Bruno. In addition to being fun genre bending, dance inducing, electro-pop music, Aaron Bruno has constructed a cathartic recount of his experience of the 2018 Malibu wildfires which destroyed his recording studio. Dancing just below the surface of these personal stories of loss, confusion, and rediscovery are the forces of good (Lightning Riders) and evil (Angel Miners) that are influencing both what happens to Aaron and how he responds. Shane and Trevor agreed that this is an album you could put on in the background, forget about these deeper stories, and simply enjoy the music. Or you can delve into the underlying significance of the lyrics and discuss how these forces play out in our own lives. Whichever way you choose to experience this album, it's a memorable and fun ride.

This week’s conversation is with Aaron Bruno, best known as the founder and lead singer of AWOLNATION.Formed in 2010, AWOLNATION crafted one of the most influential songs in years with the chart-topping, record-breaking track “Sail.”The first single off the gold-certified full-length debut Megalithic Symphony, “Sail” was certified 6x platinum in the US and holds the record for the most weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by an independent artist, the second longest for any artist.Sail had a profound impact on me.We talk about that in the podcast - how his music helped me get the vibe right for a mindset training project that I was working onIt’s amazing how music can do that. The same song can mean so many different things to so many different people.Different emotions, feelings, memories - and that’s something we discuss - why music means so much to Aaron and why he’s so passionate about it coming from an authentic place. It’s clear how much Aaron loves music, but he wasn’t always destined for stardom. He was a member of multiple bands that never made it and reached the point where others around him thought he should give it up.Think about that as you listen to this conversation. How well are you connected to what matters most to you - to the inner ache, that burning ache - and if you are - are you willing to give up just about everything else for it?
