Set in 1970s Los Angeles, The Nice Guys is Shane Black's criminally underrated neo-noir comedy that somehow never got the blockbuster love it deserved. Clay and Dursin break down the buddy dynamic between Crowe's bruiser Jackson Healy and Gosling's gloriously incompetent Holland March — including the falls, the screams, the toilet gun standoff, and every moment Gosling commits so hard to physical comedy that it borders on performance art. They also get into why the film's satirical jabs at the porn industry, the Detroit auto lobby, and Nixon-era corruption still land fifty years later.Beyond the slapstick and the sleaze, the guys dive deep into the film's cult status and why a proper sequel to this masterpiece remains one of Hollywood's biggest missed opportunities. They look back at the incredible breakout performance of Angourie Rice as Holly, the sharp-as-a-tack script that perfectly blends dark detective tropes with laugh-out-loud absurdity, and how Shane Black managed to capture lightning in a bottle by pairing an old-school tough guy with a master of modern comedic timing. Clay has questions. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in a swimming pool with Richard Nixon.

Pop Culture Writer Chris Deville (Stereogum) has just released his first book, Such Great Heights: The Complete Cultural History of the Indie Rock Explosion, back in August of 2025. He joins Nicole Barlow and Ryan Pak to discuss the soundtrack to the 2011 Nicholas Winding Refn film Drive. Both the film and the soundtrack have become very influential. The film launched Ryan Gosling into a superstar leading man and the soundtrack's influence has permeated into both the indie and pop music space, influencing artists The Weekend, Schoolboy Q, and M83. The soundtrack boasts amazing synthwave needle drops, a great Clint Martinez score, and a bit of both from Chromatics mastermind, Jonny Jewel. All of this is discussed as well as Gosling's rise from the Notebook to the superstar that he is now. In 2015, Matt Damon found himself stranded on Mars in The Martian, an adaptation of Andy Weir's novel of the same name, and had to improvise unlikely solutions in order to survive and get home. In 2026, Ryan Gosling finds himself stranded in outer space in Project Hail Mary, an adapation of Andy Weir's novel of the same name, and has to improvise unlikely solutions in order to save Earth and get home. It's fair to say that we're on familiar territory here, but who cares when it's this entertaining? Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for gloriously imaginative and daft comedy, manage the competing tones in Project Hail Mary beautifully, moving easily between wacky discovery, dramatic reveals, and earned sentimentality, and never failing to show care and an instinct for the value of the image - some shots are breathtaking. Like Weir, they're unafraid to cannibalise their previous work in search of useful ideas, reworking the monkey thought translator from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs into a computer that allows Gosling's reluctant hero to communicate with Rocky, the alien he meets. In this and elsewhere throughout, Project Hail Mary shows the same reverence for scientific inquiry and application of intelligence to problem-solving that The Martian did, which is a pleasure in itself. There's a huge amount to like here, at least until the long and excessively detailed ending, which sadly drags things down a little. We urge you to see Project Hail Mary while it's in cinemas - it's a massive crowd pleaser and one of the most satisfying experiences we've had at the pictures in a while. Amidst all this, we also discuss Gosling's particular brand of stardom and place in the Hollywood hierarchy in comparison with Leonardo DiCaprio and Timothée Chalamet, between whose names José feels Gosling gets smothered. Recorded on 1st April 2026.

The Buddies blast off for an emergency pod to discuss the 2026 film adaptation of Andy Weir's "Project Hail Mary," starring Ryan Gosling as the loneliest, most attractive genius in space. The Buddies had read the book way back on episode 23, so this was a trip down memory lane. Much of their discussion centered around Gosling's character wardrobe choices, his likeability, and if him being unable to get a date is the most unrealistic part of a movie about alien rock spiders and sentient microbes eating the sun. They also got to their normal cadence of bringing up references to Austin Powers' unfreezing sequence, contemplating whether this is all a Total Recall scenario, and referencing a number other movie comparisons. So, ‘fist my bump,' and join us for a podcast that promises to be as enjoyable as the movie (maybe). Welcome! With the resounding success of the Artemis mission to the moon, it seems like great time to look back at Ryan Gosling's take on Neil Armstrong, First Man. It's an intimate and epic look at a historical figure who was both enigmatic and introverted. Armstrong was a reluctant icon, and Gosling nails this portrayal. What happens when hard science fiction collides with big-budget cinema? The latest episode of Physics World Stories delves into the ideas within Project Hail Mary – a new film about a science teacher (portrayed by Ryan Gosling) who finds himself alone on a spacecraft with the job of saving humanity from a star-dimming threat. Host Andrew Glester talks to science-fiction author Andy Weir, whose 2021 novel inspired the production. Weir, also known for The Martian and Artemis – both adapted for the screen – has built a reputation for scientific rigour, sometimes spending days perfecting calculations for the smallest plot details. In the interview, he reflects on how his writing has evolved over time, with a growing focus on character development alongside the hardcore science. Also in the episode is astrophysicist and science communicator Becky Smethurst, who gives her take on the film's science. From the treatment of relativity to its refreshingly plausible take on alien life, Smethurst loves how Project Hail Mary avoids many familiar sci-fi clichés. She also shares some of her favourite recent science fiction. Smethurst, who runs the popular YouTube channel Dr Becky, recently released a series about Project Hail Mary. It’s well worth checking out the entertaining interviews with Weir, Gosling and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – all grappling with the challenge of bringing complex physics to the screen. https://youtu.be/lYHCTEnYOr4?si=ZLwG_2VfQMeEFOzZ
After two long years, #BoyfriendMaterial is finally back to celebrate Ryan Gosling's starring role in Project Hail Mary! After catching up on two years' worth of emails (write us at boyfriendmaterial@cageclub.me, and we'll read it in 2027), we talk about the star-studded talent in front of and behind the camera. We then look ahead to next year's two (!!) new Gosling movies, as well as other Gos on the Los news. Joe laments that Ryan Gosling gave him even more clothes he can't wear, while Joey talks about the book (and explains why the movie is better at telling this story). We then break down the plot as we talk about the two timelines, the other astronauts, and Rocky, as well as how Ryan Gosling plays the perfect balance between “scientist” and “stupid human.” Joe vents about the big problem he had with the science of the movie. We talk about Sandra Huller's scene-stealing karaoke song and how Project Hail Mary manages to be both epic and intimate (often at the same time). We then make a triumphant return to our games, many of which we didn't remember, and wind up with one of our best Fire Ass Titles in a while. We ask: is there not a single mother at school who has the hots for Gosling? With no Gosling movies slated for release until next year, why not join us over on 2 Fast 2 Forever?
Project Hail Mary is the fifth movie directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It’s written by Drew Goddard and based on the Andy Weir novel. It’s the second movie adapted from a Weir novel, and the second adapted by Goddard, after The Martian. It stars Ryan Gosling as a high school science teacher who’s tasked with … going to space basically alone and saving the world. Project Hail Mary is the No. 1 movie in the world. Its opening last weekend was the biggest of the year so far, and its domestic opening was the second-biggest of Gosling’s career (after Barbie) and the second-biggest ever for a non-franchise movie (after Oppenheimer). And: Saturday Night Live UK is an official international adaptation of regular, old SNL stateside. It, too, premiered last weekend with an episode hosted by (noted non-Brit) Tina Fey. New episodes will appear Sunday nights on Peacock in the U.S. Eight episodes have been ordered, so far. Ready to go inside the Manethosphere? Ancient Egypt. The Promise of Brilliance, Spiritual Truths, the birthplace of Hermetic Magic, Mythology, and Cat Allergies. One of the themes this show never ceases to deconstruct, reconstruct, and loop about on and on again, is our human capacity to great grand illusions for ourselves. The ability to witness a full-length feature film slice by slice—with real people performing scripted actions, speaking pre-written words, and imitating genuine emotions, all in two dimensions—yet still construct a visual narrative that absorbs you completely... that's uniquely human. That's uniquely Hollywood. And that might be the exact same illusory BS way of thinking that Egyptologists have used to delude themselves for decades... Steven Myers is a documentarian, researcher, founder, nonprofit director, author, antiquities scholar, Great Pyramid technologist, water‑pump theorist, lecturer, media guest, humanitarian advocate, and perhaps most importantly for this conversation...a critic of mainstream Egyptology. You'll learn TRUTHS about: • How the Great Pyramid of Giza may have actually been built! • Why "Royal Tomb" theories of pyramids royally suck... • A sharp teardown of the Orion Correlation Theory (and the thousands of original memes that support it) • Where thinkers like Graham Hancock and other alternative historians may still be missing the engineering reality hiding in plain sight. • Sacred geometry, star alignments, and pyramid mysticism and other things you wished Gwyneth Paltrow didn't speak about at parties The conversation with Steven takes you to an incredible place in his assessment of the Great Pyramid as an open-source industrial prosperity machine, a place where pipe dreams meet pump realities. And the occasional hairball. Your understanding of Ancient Egypt will never be the same again.... This time I stepped into sci‑fi territory with Project Hail Mary, and yeah… this one caught me off guard in the best way. Ryan Gosling plays a man who wakes up alone on a spacecraft with no memory, only to slowly realize he's light‑years from Earth and humanity's last hope. The movie balances smart science, great humor, and surprisingly strong emotion. Gosling absolutely carries this thing, often acting solo or off a prop, and he kills it. Visually, it's stunning — you can clearly see where that massive budget went — and if I had known how good it looked, IMAX would've been the move. It's an emotional roller coaster with real highs and lows, and yeah… it got me a little misty. While it runs a bit long and could've used tighter editing, that's minor nitpicking. I walked out smiling, feeling good, and honestly wanting to see it again. A rare, legit must‑see in theaters and a major crowd‑pleaser. #ProjectHailMary #MovieReview #SciFiMovies #RyanGosling #MovieRecommendation
First up, we're launching into orbit with the highly anticipated adaptation of Andy Weir's Project Hail Mary. Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a scientist who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory and a very important job: saving the sun.The "Rocky" Factor: The alien, Rocky, wasn't CGI! He was a physical, 3D-printed puppet controlled by a team of five puppeteers dubbed "The Rockyteers," allowing Gosling to actually improvise with his co-star.The Le Domas family might be gone, but the game is just getting started. Samara Weaving returns as Grace, but this time she's joined by her estranged sister (Kathryn Newton) as they take on the "High Council" of elite families.Fun Flix Fact: To keep the sisterly bond authentic, Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton were handcuffed together for a large portion of the shoot. They eventually had to switch to rubber handcuffs because the real metal ones were causing too many bruises during the action scenes! It's been 20 years since Al Gore's groundbreaking climate documentary changed the conversation forever. We're revisiting this Oscar-winner because it ties in perfectly with the "planetary salvation" stakes of Project Hail Mary.Fun Flix Fact: This was the first-ever documentary to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song (I Need to Wake Up by Melissa Etheridge). For our Hidden Gem, we're shouting about the twisted thriller The Good Boy. Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough star as a seemingly normal couple who kidnap a delinquent teen to "rehabilitate" him into being the perfect son.Fun Flix Fact: Stephen Graham's character, Chris, wears a very specific, slightly "off" wig throughout the film. It was designed to make him look trustworthy yet subtly unsettling—a classic Kubrickian touch from director Jan Komasa.Method Acting: To prepare for the role of the kidnapped Tommy, actor Anson Boon spent weeks in a "feral" mindset to capture the desperation of a boy living on a literal leash. And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. The Kristian Harloff Show is packed today with one of the biggest stories in entertainment as we break down the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer after it set a massive 24-hour launch record. According to Sony's reported numbers cited by ComicBookMovie, the trailer reached 718.6 million views in its first 24 hours, surpassing the previous benchmark and instantly making this one of the hottest movie conversations online right now. We dive into what made the trailer hit so hard, why fans are reacting so strongly, and what this could mean for the future of Spider-Man on the big screen. We're also talking about Ryan Gosling finally addressing the long-running Ghost Rider rumors while promoting Project Hail Mary. Gosling reportedly said that "some discussions have been had" while also calling the situation "complicated," which is more fuel for Marvel fans who have been speculating about his possible MCU future for months. If you've been following Ghost Rider chatter, Avengers rumors, or Marvel casting talk, this is a big one to unpack. On top of that, Drew Goddard has revealed why Sony's planned Sinister Six movie never made it to theaters. Per the report, Goddard said the project effectively fell apart in the aftermath of the Sony hack, giving fans a fresh look at one of the most fascinating "what if" superhero movies that never happened. We discuss what that movie could have been, how it might have reshaped Spider-Man's cinematic history, and why fans are still talking about Sinister Six all these years later. We also cover the latest Buffy news after Sarah Michelle Gellar urged fans not to read the leaked New Sunnydale script. Gellar said pilots are unfinished learning tools and pushed back on people judging the project based on material that was never meant to be seen in that form. We break down the cancellation chatter, the leak conversation, and what this means for Buffy fans still hoping for the franchise to return in a major way. If you're into Spider-Man, Marvel, Ghost Rider, Ryan Gosling, Project Hail Mary, Sinister Six, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the biggest movie and TV stories of the day, this episode of The Kristian Harloff Show is for you. Cal plans to go out to the theater to watch the actor save the universe in Project Hail Mary. Cal doesn't know exactly what's going to happen, but he sees the plot as the perfect metaphor for how humans must look at the work in the age of AI. Gosling plays a middle school science teacher who wakes up in a rocket and can't remember, only to use the skills he has to save the universe. We're all going to have to step and find the best in ourselves as we look at work going forward. The movie may be an inspiring way to see humanity's future.
