The Tower of Nero, ch. 26 to 30 This week on Unwise Girls, we discuss what it's like for something to just be okay. When something's okay, that means that you're largely disappointed in it, right? That's how we define okay? I guess it is. We talk about it all: Nero, The Beast, Meg's final grappling with her abuse, Nero's other kids, gas attacks, hand attacks, immortality attacks, and all the rest! Yay. Oregon has some of the strictest land-use policies in the nation. And those laws have made Oregon what is today. They’ve protected farmlands and preserved coastlines. They’ve pushed developers to build up - not out - in an effort to avoid sprawl. And they have prompted endless battles as housing becomes more expensive and farm land becomes less available. The latest land-use battle pits farm stands - think U-pick, corn mazes, and concerts -- up against some of the state’s biggest conservation groups. We’ll discuss all that and more on the latest episode of OPB Politics Now.
The Seattle City Council confirmed 14 members to the Renters’ Commission on Tuesday, following a controversial delay after Councilmembers Rob Saka and Sara Nelson failed to show up for a previous vote on Commission appointments. Their absence forced an unusual cancellation of the vote because the housing committee didn’t reach quorum. Some people think this was influenced by an email former councilmember Cathy Moore sent, urging her former colleagues to delay the vote. In this episode of Soundside, we catch up with Councilmember Mark Solomon, who was appointed to Seattle’s District 2 seat after Tammy Morales left the position in January. He's also serving as vice chair of the Housing and Human Services Committee... and is one of the people Moore tried to email before that first vote. Guest: Mark Solomon, Seattle City Councilmember appointed to represent District 2. FOLLOW UP: UK GOV ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC CAR GRANTFollowing months and months of calling on the UK Government to help private registrations with financial aid, the motor industry has got what it wants. Sort of. The Electric Car Grant has been announced that will be up to £3,750 off the price of a new car that is listed at under £37,000 plus other criteria, including how clean the grid is where the car was built. That last point effectively cuts out Chinese EVs due to their CO2 intensive energy supplies. The grant is active now, with OEMs and dealerships claiming the money back following registration. Added to which, it applies to all buyers and not just private, as was called for. Many within the industry have expressed their disappointment in the scheme, especially how it has ignored the second hand market plus the knock on effect this will have to depreciation. FOLLOW UP: RENAULT GROUP APPOINT INTERIM CEODuncan Minto has taken over the interim CEO position at Renault Group, following Luca de Meo's exit. Minto was appointed chief financial officer in March. The search for a new CEO continues. Click this Autocar article link here, to read more. CHINA THROTTLES BATTERY MATERIAL EXPORTSChina is once again reminding the world who controls almost all of the supply chain when it comes to electric cars. This time they have, due to being now classed as security relevant, implemented an immediate export restriction on battery material preparation technology, ie. stuff that goes into making battery cathodes used in electric cars and energy storage. No reason has been really given for the sudden move. You can find out more by clicking this electrive article link here. JLR CUTS JOBS AS SALES DROPJLR has announced it is seeking voluntary redundancies from management positions, following the last quarter's drop in sales. The company said it expects no more than 500 roles to go. The reason for reduced sales is being mainly put at the feet of the US tariff mess. Click this Autocar article link here to read more. GEELY BUYS ZEEKERGeely has acquired the final 37.2% of Zeeker shares, that were listed on the New York Stock Exchange only last year. This will cost the Chinese company around $2.4 billion. Suggestions are this has happened due to the geopolitical outlook and adding them to the group enables greater cost savings thanks to increasing the economy of scale benefits when purchasing parts. You can read more by clicking this electrive article link here. UK GOVERNMENT OPENS AV TAXI CONSULTATIONThe UK Government is asking for our feedback on rolling out autonomous taxi and bus services. They are going to do it, be under no illusion, but we might be able to influence just how that looks, in terms of the information these companies must supply. To read more,

When the Bowens' new neighbor Baylee Parsons and her mom, Jill, heard that The Flood was rehearsing on Wednesday night, they dropped by to test the waters (ooo! See what we did there?) The first tune the guys played for these lovely Flood first-timers illustrated the band's longtime interest in old-time string band music. They turned to their usual go-to guy — Charlie Poole — and his “Leaving Home,” a 1927 winking, nodding retelling of the classic Frankie and Johnny story.Pamela's video of the tune is further enhanced here with vintage film footage from He Was Her Man, Dudley Murphy's 1931 film starring Gilda Gray and Walter Fenner. For the back story on this great old tune, check out this earlier Flood Watch article. Segment 1: • A major story is unfolding in evangelical circles—but Todd isn't covering it yet. • Sharing speculation without facts equals gossip or slander. • Sometimes silence is the most biblical response if you can't be helpful. Segment 2: • Jim Bakker's back—asking for $1,000 to avoid homelessness. • 2 Peter 2 exposes these greedy false teachers who exploit vulnerable people. • While Judas scorned Mary's generosity, Jesus praised it—true worship always costs something. Segment 3: • Self-diagnosed "neurodivergence" is exploding—especially in the UK. • Autism diagnoses have jumped 780% in recent years. • Are we pathologizing normal behavior—or missing real issues? Segment 4: • New Pope Leo XIV: conservative on doctrine, progressive on climate. • Joy Behar and The View are confused (and worried) about the mix. • False leaders who mislead others? It's 2025, and I'm kicking off the year (okay, I know, it is February already, but I'm just getting warmed up over here) with some thoughts on what women—especially ambitious moms, business owners, and entrepreneurs—don't need more of this year. Spoiler alert: it's not another free download that's only two pages long, another social media platform, or another "life-changing" productivity hack. In this episode, I'm sharing how I eased into the new year (hello, sauna time and slow workouts) and a download of information that hit me on a random Saturday. We're talking about stripping away the excess and focusing on what really matters: creating instead of consuming, making space for what we love, and redefining success on our terms. Tune in to hear: How I intentionally eased into 2025 Why women don't need more shoulds this year What it really looks like to align with your own values The power of connection, third spaces, and nerding out over what you love Why you were never meant to do life alone as an ambitious woman It's time to stop chasing more and start making space for what truly fuels us. Mark Krikorian, Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies, addresses a recent debate on legal immigration, particularly H-1B visas, sparked on Twitter during the holiday season. The social media discussion highlighted differences between tech industry leaders who advocate for more high-skilled immigration and the President Trump's voter base, who seek reductions in legal immigration. While illegal immigration has dominated recent debates, Krikorian emphasized the importance of addressing legal immigration reform. He outlines two potential solutions to the disagreement, both detailed in his Compact Magazine article. First, reforming the H-1B visa program by prioritizing applicants based on salary, ensuring that only the most valuable candidates receive visas. Second, reallocating visas from family-based and diversity lottery categories to skills-based categories, potentially reducing overall immigration while increasing the skill level of entrants.A panel discussion, “Beyond the Border: Why Legal Immigration Numbers Matter,” will be held on January 14, 2025, at the National Press Club in D.C. to discuss both high-skilled and low-skilled visa programs. The event will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person.

Offense vs Michigan State Starts at 1:00 Introducing the MGoBlog post-game incident scale: 1 -- Kerfuffle 2 -- Fracas 3 -- Brewhaha 4 -- Melee 5 -- Donnybrook What happened after the game on Saturday was a kerfuffle. It felt like Michigan State came into the game with a solid plan while Michigan was struggling. Suddenly, Michigan was leading at halftime. Davis Warren's job was to not lose this game and he didn't, the ball wasn't put into danger and it worked. Donovan Edwards is no Tom Brady but he's got a perfect QB rating. 2. Defense vs Michigan State Starts at 35:15 Defense only gives up 17 points but it doesn't feel super great? But for the most part they did okay. Junior Colson set the bar for consistent tackling and now missed tackles are weird. They put Mason Graham at edge and got weird and then got beat by Michigan State 3rd down frippery. They're preventing their best players from making plays. Michigan State didn't put this game on Aidan Chiles' shoulders so we didn't get the full Chiles experience. Brian finally has a nice thing to say about Cal Haladay. Maybe Jesse Minter was just so good that no matter who was the defensive coordinator this year they would be perceived as bad. 3. Hot Takes, Game Theory, and Special Teams Starts at 1:01:08 We gotta have a brewhaha level of takes at least. Tommy Doman has continued to be inconsistent. Was State's on-side kick a good idea? The weird fair catch rule is something a lot of us didn't know about. Going for it on 4th down, tougher decision than last year! 4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac Starts at 1:29:51 Indiana 31, Washington 17 Yardage was fairly even but Indiana grinded it out very consistently. They're 8-0 for the first time since 1967. Kurtis Rourke had surgery on his thumb and might be back this weekend. Ohio State 21, Nebraska 17 Indiana beat Nebraska 56-7, JUST SAYIN'. Ryan Day has a meltdown on the field and then tells fans to be happy about this game in his press conference. Ohio State fans are comparing their tackle situation to Michigan's QB situation. Penn State 28, Wisconsin 13 Drew Allar went out around halftime. It doesn't look like it's happening for Luke Fickell at Wisconsin. Penn State pretty much dominated down-for-down. USC 42, Rutgers 20 Pushed back til 11pm EST kickoff to accommodate the World Series?? How many of you sickos (me) watched this? Iowa 40, Northwestern 14 They benched Cade McNamara! Northwestern only had 163 yards of offense. Oregon 38, Illinois 9 Eek. Minnesota 48, Maryland 23 Never competitive. MUSIC: "Rubberneckin'"-- Elvis "This Is Why We Fight" -- The Decembrists "When They Fight, They Fight" -- The Generationals “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra
I am the Smedley D. Butler Fellow for Military Affairs at the Libertarian Institute. They asked me to comment on the recent podcast interview between Ben Shapiro and Niall Ferguson which of course, was a reaction to Darryl Cooper's (Martyrmade Podcast) recent appearance on Tucker Carlson (I don't even know if you can access the episode). So this this may the first in a series of Flash Messages I will do to service that cause. I find members of the academic historian cartel (even "right of center" types like Ferguson) are horrified that non-credentialed historical observers are weighing in on the consequences of war in history. I urge everyone to deprogram yourselves and listen to the rogue but right historians like Martyrmade and ProfCJ's Dangerous History podcasts to get the better and more accurate view of what actually happened in the past that shapes our present. Here's what you must realize about war: wars are won by the least incompetent forces and the world will not be shiny and new at the conclusion but it will different. I address some these issues. I would urge you to listen to CG podcast Episode 052 on Churchill for a more in-depth indictment of His Nibs. My blogging at the Libertarian Institute. My Substack Write me at cgpodcast@pm.me
1022. This week, we look at election terms like “president-elect” and “lame duck” and how they're used during a U.S. presidential transition. Then, I dig into my favorite kind of hot grammar news: people in Germany are angry about apostrophes! The "election words" segment is by Karen Lunde Hertzberg, a former Quick and Dirty Tips editor who has crafted hundreds of articles on the art of writing well. She was an online education pioneer, founding one of the first online writing workshops. These days, she provides writing tips and writing coach services at HelpMeWriteBetter.com.
This episode features a reluctant guest to talk about the recent changes to the Boston qualifying standards announced by the BAA last week. Yes, Kara dragged me (your editor who is also a running coach) kicking and screaming into this one! We start with some life updates from Kara and Des. Kara shares that she and Adam recently celebrated their 23rd wedding anniversary in Estes Park with a nothing but "Netflix and chill." TMI perhaps? We aren't sure she knows the full meaning of that vernacular, but you do get some Netflix recommendations from her! Des shares her experience running a a workout at the DC Half, hosted by Pacers Running, where she may or may not have annoyed her fellow racers. They also talk about the opening of the magical box from Brooks Running and what was revealed inside. You must listen to get the full intel there. Then, the podcast takes a sad turn discussing the tragic murder of Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei. Violence against women has no place in this world, and we encourage you to research and support organizations that are on the ground doing something about it. Check out the Nala Track Club and Tirop's Angels to do just that. Finally, Chris and Kara nearly come to blows talking at the BQ standards and process, while Des mostly stays out of the fray adding helpful suggestions here and there. You may want to cancel us both after this discussion. We are certain there will be strong opinions on both sides so let us know what you think. We are at least united in our desire for Boston to continue to be a special place to aspire to race. We finish with a Super 5 turned Super 6 with our top 6 things from the week including the massive support of the Nobody Asked Us merch. You can still get yours here: https://nobody-asked-us.printify.me/products. Of course, we couldn't do the show without our amazing sponsors. Supporting them is a way to support the podcast: Pre-order your Brooks Glycerin Max at brooksrunning.com (countdown timer and fancy box not included). To get your Super Coffee fix, use code NOBODYASKED for 20% off on Amazon. Download the TCS NYC Marathon app to prep for tracking all of your favorite runners including Des and Chris on November 3rd. 995. This week, we look at when to use parentheses, dashes, and commas and how the choice can change the tone of your writing. Then, we dive into the history of words for describing a big fuss — "kerfuffle," "hullabaloo," "hoopla," and more. The "big fuss" segment was written by Samantha Enslen, who runs Dragonfly Editorial.
