He discusses the atmospheric recording sessions with producer Rob Caggiano, which captured the band's signature dark and gothic sound. Dani also explores the song's lyrical themes of yearning and loss, reflecting on its portrayal of a destructive relationship akin to a drug addiction. Dani Filth dive into Cradle of Filth's brand-new album, reflects on his band's legacy and shares a hilarious story about Ed Sheeran's first connection to the band.
Interview by Angela CroudaceCradle of Filth's frontman, Dani Filth, sat down with HEAVY to discuss the band's 14th studio album, The Screaming of the Valkyries, their evolution over the years, and the provocative themes they've explored in their music.Dani shared that the new album brings a modern sound while still nodding to Cradle of Filth's roots, with a blend of fresh ideas and older influences. "It's a modern sound record, one step forward, but it also has a passing nod back to previous incarnations," he explained. This new direction is, in part, thanks to new members Donnie and Zoe, and the band's increased playtime during the pandemic, which helped refine their sound.Although the album doesn't have a central concept, Dani describes it as a celebration of escapism, rituals, and vampirism. He elaborated on the inspiration behind the album's title, revealing that it stems from the final track, When Misery Was a Stranger. The title The Screaming of the Valkyries was inspired by the impending doom of the Doomsday Clock, likening the sound of Valkyries' screams during Ragnarok to the existential realisation of impending disaster. On the subject of religion, Dani was candid about his views, stating that while he respects others' beliefs, he finds the notion of religion's validity in the modern age absurd. “I think time has just worn out the message,” he said, pointing to the age of science and the contradictions he sees within religious teachings. However, he emphasised that it's the belief itself, not the dogma, that holds value.Over the years, the band's dynamic has evolved significantly, with Dani noting that the band and crew have become a tight-knit family. He shared a personal moment, reflecting on a recent wedding within the band, symbolising the strong bond they now share. The influence of the band's longevity and experience shows through in the new album, which recalls elements of their older works. When asked about his favourite track from the new album, Dani pointed to Ex Sanguine Draculae, a song that takes him back to the band's earlier work in the ‘90s. “It just reminds me of the era that we did the Dusk and Her Embrace record,” he said. He also revealed the band's collaboration with renowned producer Scott Atkins, praising his approach to refining the band's sound and ensuring the production was sharp and true to their vision.Dani also shared that, if given the chance, he'd love to collaborate with Lana Del Rey, citing her gothic sensibilities and haunting voice as a perfect fit for Cradle of Filth's style. Fans of both artists may just get lucky one day.As for the fan experience, Dani recalled a bizarre moment in Australia when a fan gave the band a prosthetic leg as a gift, only for it to later be tossed onto the stage during a performance. "I don't know whether it was a gift or whether we should have given it back," he mused, "We did give it back though" he confirmed. With The Screaming of the Valkyries out this week, Cradle of Filth continues to push boundaries while honoring their legacy in the metal world. Fans can expect a thrilling mix of old and new, with Dani and his bandmates at the forefront, creating music that's as unpredictable and darkly captivating as ever.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

We begin our conversation on writing music post pandemic and Dani's lets us know they are already writing for a new album before this one drops, we continue to discuss all the new social media platforms and how that is to navigate for established bands, the sad realization that going to a record store has zero magic for him in modern times, the years of him skateboarding in an English village, his disdain for any kind of graffiti that is not art, the marriage of two members of Cradle of Filth and having newlyweds in the band, and he tells us his favorite 80's action hero. Petar and Brandon discuss Dave Murray's comments on Iron Maiden knowing when its time to hang it up, if Iron Maiden would announce a final tour, Triple B Records having to tell fans not to trust an AI Mindforce merch website, and Jinjer's bassist letting us all know again that musicians are on the bottom of a pyramid scheme. After a series of lineup changes, production flubs, and exhausting legal battles, Cradle of Filth emerged under a new label, poised to make a statement in the new millennium. Fueled by the ambition of their enigmatic and versatile frontman, Dani Filth, the band's 4th album feels like a band finally achieving their twisted sound and vision. Nothing captures the Halloween spirit quite like the works of Clive Barker blended into an orchestral, maddening, and often depraved metal opus. Interview by Kris PetersCradle Of Filth are a band best experienced live.Their moody, atmospheric music - while still imposing and engaging on record - is elevated to another dimension when played out on stage and after an absence of far too long Australian fans will once again get the opportunity to marvel at the wonders of Dani Filth and his band of miscreants. After unleashing their first live album in aeons last year titled Trouble & Their Double Lives - some of which was recorded in Australia - Cradle Of Filth have been making up for lost time by touring on a global scale, with their sights now set firmly Down Under where Filth has promised the band will more than pay their debts of absence. They will be joined by Moldovan heavy outfit Infected Rain - led by the enigmatic and talented Lena Scissorhands - who will be making their debut trip to this country in a double-headed musical snake that promises to bite more than a pit full of adders.Cradle Of Filth mastermind and frontman Dani Filth joined HEAVY to discuss the tour and other things happening within the band."Yeah, pre-pandemic, wasn't it?" Filth questioned when we mentioned it's been a while between visits. "That would be the main crux of the reason, then (laughs)."We ask what has changed with the band between their last Australian run of shows to now."We've got a different line-up," he offered. "We've toured everywhere. We toured America during the pandemic, actually, right on the tail end. Aside from that, we have progressed with writing the new album. We've already done a track with Ed Sheeran as well, although that will probably be coming out on the special edition of the new album. I can't really talk much more about that with legalities and what have you. Our new album should be out… we should be dropping a new single actually, around the time of the Australian tour - maybe a little bit later - with the outlook for the album being dropping in March next year. That's almost finished, and we have just been super busy with the band. Lots of gigs. The album we started last July and the record company was like, why are you taking so long? And we were like, because we're on tour (laughs)."In the full interview, Dani talks more about their upcoming tour in Australia, their new album, and the challenges of balancing recording with touring. He revealed that the recording is expected to be finished by the beginning of June, with a focus on mixing and shooting videos in the Czech Republic.Dani also emphasized the distinctiveness of their new music and their willingness to push boundaries, while also expressing excitement for the upcoming shows and the support band, Infected Rain. The discussion also touched on the band's international composition and their collaboration with Ed Sheeran.

Interview by Kris PetersBrisbane based international masters of metal Gangs Of Old Ladies are about as underground and DIY as you could get in the modern age of mass consumption.Making noise out of a top secret gateway to Hell somewhere in the Sunshine State, Gangs Of Old Ladies are as mysterious as they are brutal. They are a musical force unto themselves that has somehow managed to conjure support from some of the heaviest hitters in the international metal scene, with artists from Chuck Billy (Testament) to Dani Filth to Gary Holt (Exodus) lending their talents and wizardry.Such is the bands allure they had also welcomed former Soilwork guitarist David Andersson into their inner sanctum at a time in his life where friendship and loyalty meant more than anything presented by music.Andersson's fate became entwined with that of the band - which he joined before his passing last year - and now, finally, some of Andersson's last ever and most soul satisfying work is ready to be shared with the world.Death Magic Volume One is a neatly woven package of three tracks that starts with the odd yet haunting intro Avresa Fran Stockholm. One of the last pieces of music penned by Andersson before his death, the track celebrates both memorial and rebirth, featuring the newly founded skills of main guitarist and songwriter Simon Unknowne. The intro also features a hauntingly beautiful Swedish goodbye spoken by David's own sister Emma Andersson, with a video shot by David's dear friend Morgan Schrantz.Released in memory of and to pay honour to their fallen brother, Death Magic Volume One is Gangs Of Old Ladies' way of sharing some of Andersson's future spark as well as acting as a coping mechanism for a life tragically cut short. Frontman Jekyll Jones and guitarist/songwriter Simon Unknowne sat down with HEAVY to convey their message of metal."I think it's the best work we've ever done," Jones fired without hesitation. "That's basically because Simon wrote the whole thing, engineered the entire thing, mixed the entire thing and made it what it is."While Death Magic Volume One is dedicated to the memory of Andersson, it also serves as a blistering sonic representation of a band that could have easily imploded after such internal devestation but instead chose to rebel."The first track Avresa Fran Stockholm - which is Swedish for Departure From Stockholm - is... in David's final months he was in hospital in Stockholm," Jones began. "He hated Stockholm (laughs), and we would video chat every second or third day for hours and hours on end. We were very close. I would actually take the phone down while we were on video messenger and we would watch the sunrise together. I knew everything that was going on with him personally and Soilwork. We were working on music in the background and it was meant to be some other stuff and then David passed and we call it the A.D effect - After David effect. It was almost like he passed his magic onto us, and Simon just gave us these tracks that were not only a lot more sophisticated than anything else we've ever done, but all of a sudden there was violins and cellos and double bass and there was symphonic resonance in there. It was like how did you do this? And that's where the title comes from as well. We got this inspiration, and the girls in the band came on board when David was still with us. He was very much a fan of Luna Black's voice and loves Zoskia's ideas. It turned out that after we lost him it was almost the right recipe - even to the point that one of his other projects was with a French lady - and she makes videos. She was the one who made the video clip for Avresa and we are also very good friends with David's Mum and his Sister and it's actually his sister's voice that you hear at the end of the song. It was... for them, they think it's a beautiful thing to have something that is of David's but at the same time not taking the limelight away from him."In the full interview we run through each of the three tracks individually as Gangs Of Old Ladies explain their meaning in greater detail, get more of an understanding of where David's head was at musically during his time with the band, some last memories which will act as motivation for those left behind, other exciting things happening with the band, their reputation as one of Australia's most unusual extreme acts and more.

This week on Toilet Radio: We check in on THE SHREDDERZ who released a new single with Brandon Ellis of the Black Dahlia Murder last week. It is crashing and burning to the fucking ground. Great job! / Dani Filth is sick of getting screwed by Spotify, can't afford cat bills / Dee Snider continues to cry about cancel culture, this time with a Fox News interview / Let's look at some new festival lineups (New England Metal and Hardcore Fest and Metal Injection Fest) and try to figure out where exactly the broader genre of metal is going / Ash from Sumerian is ALL IN on something called “Robert F Kennedy Jr” who claims to be “running for president”. Sounds like bullshit to me! / Finally, Rammstein's drummer has adopted the house style of using vaguely social progressive language to deny that his bandmate drugged and raped a woman. It's an episode! Next week we're watching The Decline Part 2. Music featured on this ‘sode: Blight House – Cryptid Cutie This program is available on Spotify. It is also available on iTunes or whatever they call it now, where you can rate, review, and subscribe. Give us money on Patreon to get exclusive bonus episodes and other cool shit.
On this week's MetalSucks Podcast, we've got Fascination Street Studio Founder Jens Bogren on the show! During our discussion, we chat about his and Ihsahn's course at URM Academy “How It's Done” available until July 12th, why he decided to put together a step by step course, and how much of the actually course was scripted. Of course, we had to have a deeper discussion about his experience in the studio, so we asked him about things like: when spending a lot of time on pre-production makes sense, what it's like when bands enter the studio with “demo disease," and what he feels are the most overused elements in demos. We also talked about studio tech and the considerations that go along with it, like what it takes to adapt modern technology in his studio, if he has ever lost an entire song when a hard drive crashed, what he feels can be the most tedious step in recording, and why capturing clean singing in a metal band is vital to the song when needed. Petar and Brandon discuss Dani Filth calling “Spotify the biggest criminals in the world,” Avenged Sevenfold's Johnny Christ stating they may make the move to single only releases, Dave Mustaine's thoughts about the one thing that would end Megadeth, and Rammstein drummer Christoph Schneider's statement on Till Lindemann's sexual assault allegations. Metal shrieker Dani Filth has traveled the globe for a quarter-century spreading the gothic black metal gospel of his band Cradle of Filth. The British group's latest album, Cryptoriana - The Seductiveness Of Decay, is their best in a decade. On top of the unusual gifts bequeathed to him by devout fans, everything from homemade dolls to large animal skulls, Dani loves to collect toys, paintings, and antiques. Backstage at The Paramount in Huntington, New York, we discuss our mutual love of collecting and the fascinating finds he has amassed throughout his life. He also reveals how he was quietly outbid by a major Britpop figure for a "hideous" piece of pop art he discovered at random in a British antiques store.
