Kia ora e te whānau. We've discussed on Dirt Church Radio in the past that the pros walk amongst us, however witnessing their drive, discipline, and ability to seemingly dance away on the most challenging of terrain is a sight to behold. And, look, not to put too fine a point on it, but Amanda Basham rules. A professional trail runner and endurance coach, who has raced at the highest heights of the sport, including winning the USATF trail championships as her first race as a professional. Amanda was kind enough to speak to Ali and Andrew about her extraordinary career in the sport, her love of Aotearoa, and an incredible, in-depth, and honest discussion about what goes into being a professional runner and a parent. From post-partum to the joys and travails of travelling to races with young children, and the parenting juggle, to the business aspect of sponsorship, longevity, and perspective, Basham took us to school. This is an incredible conversation with an amazing human being. Thanks, Amanda!! Becoming a mother is a transformative experience, but for elite athletes like Amanda Basham, it also presents unique challenges when it comes to pursuing their dreams. I was honored to sit down with Amanda to hear her story of returning to competitive sports after having children and the profound lessons she's learned along the way. Amanda is a professional trail runner and endurance coach with an inspiring path in the world of ultra running. We explore the profound changes in training, racing, and life schedules that come with becoming a mother, and Amanda shares her experiences returning to racing postpartum. From battling self-doubt to navigating the lack of support for postpartum athletes, Amanda sheds light on the often-overlooked struggles faced by mothers in athletics. Together, we discuss strategies for managing disappointment, expectations, and the mental toughness required to persevere as both athletes and mothers. Plus, the complexities of co-parenting while pursuing elite sports, highlighting the importance of flexibility, communication, and self-care. KEY TAKEAWAYS Returning to sports after having kids is very challenging both physically and mentally. There is a lack of support for postpartum athletes from sponsors, races, and in general. Having a positive mindset and not giving up can help overcome mental hurdles. Flexibility and communication are needed to balance parenting and competing. Sharing real stories of challenge and success can inspire and support other mothers. Dave and Mariah report back to their coach, Amanda Basham after their first ultra ever. Enjoy the show!
Dave has been spending lots of time on the bike to let his body recover from some injury and Mariah has been nailing all of her training. Today we talk about what they are expecting during the race and field questions from their coach, Amanda Basham!
This week on the podcast we get to talk with Amanda Basham - professional ultra runner, coach and new parent to 8 month old Rylan with her partner Justin Grunewald. Amanda shares with us all about how she discovered running, how it led to healing from an eating disorder, and how running has changed since becoming a mom. We enjoyed hearing about how her mindsets have shifted - through pregnancy from running for performance to running for health and in this new postpartum era where her main focus is appreciation for the ability to run. We all get to cry a little in solidarity about the challenges that lack of sleep plays while training and we see what Amanda and Justin do to support each other in this phase of life. Amanda shares about her return to ultras since having a baby, which has been a successful but bumpy ride - she got 4th at Speedgoat in July then had to pull out of CCC due to pelvic pain in August. But one thing we loved about talking to Amanda was that even in the midst of hard moments that come with motherhood she chooses to focus on the inexplainable love she has for Rylan and how “no race or mountain I could summit would be worth not having her.” (We also get some great girl time in with Rylan in this episode and enjoyed meeting her!) Amanda leaves us with what is in our opinion some of the best advice: In a world of many opinions constantly coming at you and the inescapable mom guilt, do what works for you. That will help you be the best mom for your particular kids in your particular family. Do what works for you. We're all doing our best and taking things day by day! Amanda is a gem of a person and gave us great, honest, real life inspiration! Listen to this episode by clicking the link below or searching “Run Hard Mom Hard” on any podcast platforms! Justin Grunewald is a pro trail runner for Altra and Rabbit, an ER Physician, a father, and the Chair of Brave Like Gabe. This conversation has it all. On the running side, we discuss how Justin got into mountain running, crushing FKTs, his upcoming race UTMB CCC 100km, and how he (and his partner Amanda Basham) balances training in the mountains in Colorado with fatherhood and being a doctor in Minnesota. He also predicts Chris's time for the upcoming Pikes Peak Marathon. Justin gives the backstory on how his wife, Gabriele Grunewald, and friends started the Brave Like Gabe foundation and how meeting Chip Gaines in Central Park accelerated the foundation's work with some massive donations. Chip Gaines also pimped out a van for Justin. We close it out with a good 'ole beer discussion. Justin is a beer expert and has hopes of opening his brewery. He reviews the beer of the week with Chris and gives the deets on what his dream brewery looks like. Sit back, crack a cold one, and enjoy this conversation with Justin Grunewald. Amanda Basham is a professional ultra runner currently living in Boulder, Co and expecting her first child in January 2021. She comes on the podcast to discuss her introduction to ultra running, how running helped work thru an eating disorder, her definition of an "interesting muffin,” what running these days is like and how she is managing with less caffeine during her pregnancy.
"I think the biggest thing with grief is knowing that some days you’re gonna be drowning and unable to breathe, and I think I’ve had 12- to 24-hour cry-fests where you literally feel like you’re going to suffocate or die of dehydration. But it does end eventually. And then you take that deep breath and drink a glass of water and look outside and the world is still there. And you can keep going. Just having the hope to keep going is the most important." Justin Grunewald is a doctor, ultra runner, and avid chaser of FKTs. He's happiest running up mountains in pursuit of running the fastest known time on any given trail. (So far in 2020, Justin has run more than 15 FKTs — two of which he did since we recorded this episode!) In addition to his many accomplishments, both professionally and on the run, Justin is perhaps best known as husband to the late Gabe Grunewald, who passed away last year after a long and arduous battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma, a rare cancer. On this episode, Justin shares what he's learned about grief, and how he finds hope even when life feels particularly hard. He talks about feeling joy amidst pain, crying happy tears alongside sad ones, and about finding love after loss. Amanda and Justin were in Kauai to run the Kalalau Trail and thought to check it out. Ill prepared for the humidity, Amanda nonetheless decided to go for the FKT, and succeeded. Justin accompanied her going out (so she is listed as Supported) but then then fell apart from the heat. "We were all wondering, 'where's Justin'? He was two hours late getting back." Three days later he felt better, going an hour faster than Amanda and establishing the Male FKT. Justin always brings attention to the Brave Like Gabe Foundation, which accepts donations, and was named for his former wife. Gabe Grunewald (nee Anderson) was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2009. After that, she became a professional middle-distance runner, with numerous podiums, international appearances, and one national championship, often while having numerous organs removed. She founded the Brave Like Gabe Foundation in 2018 and died in June, 2019, 3 weeks before her 33rd birthday.
From Hawaii, I sat down with Justin Grunewald and Amanda Basham for a long form conversation about life, love and hope. We get into many topics both big and small, in particular what life has been like after the passing of his wife Gabe Grunewald, both of their FKT runs on the Kalalau Trail and much more. ______ Patreon.com/BillyYang Instagram.com/BillyYangPod Twitter.com/BillyYang Facebook.com/BillyYangPodcast
