In this episode of Trail Society, Corrine Malcolm, Hillary Allen, and Keely Henninger dive into the topic of goal setting for athletes, focusing on the importance of aligning both goals and values to enhance performance and motivation. They discuss the common tension between being process-oriented versus outcome-driven, and how athletes often get caught up in the race calendar without understanding their deeper "why" or core values. The conversation emphasizes how discovering your personal "North Star"—the driving force behind your actions—can help avoid burnout and misalignment, leading to more fulfilling and sustainable progress. The trio also reflects on the challenges of staying consistent with basic principles, even when more glamorous solutions seem tempting. Drawing from insights in Brad Stulberg's work, they stress the value of focusing on the process itself rather than obsessing over the outcome. The episode encourages athletes to embrace their core values—whether it's perseverance, integrity, or self-improvement—and use them as guiding principles throughout their training and race journeys. Ultimately, they highlight that true success lies in the commitment to consistent, incremental effort rather than expecting a singular goal to change one's life. Quotes "The reason why I got into trail and ultrarunning was because I had that curiosity for the limits of human potential and how far I could go." (02:32 | Hillary Allen) "It's been an interesting saga of getting back from injuries, pivoting and seeing how it's really forced me to grow as an athlete and a person to really ask again these questions: 'Why do I want to keep doing this?' 'Why do I want to keep running and competing and doing all this other stuff?' and 'How can I do it differently that actually supports my new body?'" (05:40 | Hillary Allen) "I've fully embraced the multi-sport athlete life. And I think that it first came from trying cycling as a way to get back from injury, from some ankle injuries. It was a quicker way for me to start to move again." (12:31 | Hillary Allen) "What I love about being a multi-sport athlete is, I feel like mentally, it gives me a break. I'm not just doing the same thing." (16:54 | Hillary Allen) "I started using the lever system as a way to add in running volume while doing it more purposefully. I could actually temper how much weight I was loading on my tendon as it was kind of getting used to the pounding of running, which I think was absolutely game changing." Compelled to move her body, flee her perceived inadequacies, and shed her sadness, Hunter found solace - and success - in competitive and endurance-distance running. She established herself as a national-class athlete, qualified for the marathon Olympic Trials in 1988, and became a trusted coach to others. Even after a life-threatening accident, motherhood, and, later, a shockingly life-altering injury, nothing could keep her from the roads and trails around her Boulder, Colorado, home. But what was she running from?In this, her introspective and insightful memoir, Hunter explores how generational trauma, including her mother's reliance on food and drugs; her daughter's drug use; and her own overzealousness with exercise impacted her family and how, in her early 60s, she is finding her way toward balance, strength, and confidence. She reflects on how she, her mother, and her daughter experience ratzo v'shov, (as it's known in Judaism), the spiritual act of running in its many forms and returning to appreciation grounded in self-love.In This Episode: Find out more about Vicki: Coaching | Instagram Purchase Running and Returning Find our more about Hillary: Website | TheFeed Club Episode 23 featuring Hillary Thanks to our sponsors:The Feed Instagram | WebsiteNeuroReserveUse code TRAVISMACY for 15% off RELEVATE by NeuroReserve: Core Dietary Nutrients for Lifelong Brain Health- - - - - - - - - - -Purchase A Mile at A Time: A Father and Son's Inspiring Alzheimer's Journey of Love, Adventure, and HopeSubscribe: Apple Podcast | SpotifyCheck us out: Instagram | Twitter | Website | YouTubeThe show is Produced and Edited by Palm Tree Pod Co.

We cover some of the challenges she has faced with her everyday nutrition, especially relating to her Ferritin and B12 levels and how she got them up with the help of a dietitian. We also dive into all the work she has done on her performance nutrition, and what types of nutrition strategies work well for her during long runs and races. In case you're wondering how I know Elise, I actually spoke to her for the first time in this episode! She reached out to me a couple years ago, suggesting that her good friend and pro-runner Hillary Allen come on the show - that's episode 41 if you'd like to give it a listen - and we followed each other on Instagram ever since. When another podcast interview got rescheduled at the last minute, and I found out Elise was going to be at Canyons, I invited her to come on the show! I have been meaning to reinstate my recreational athlete nutrition profile series for ages, and I knew she'd be a great guest to get that going again. What resulted was an episode that is part interview, part chit chat. We ended up going on more than a few tangents - about NYC food, training for ultras while living in NYC, my fear of all the river crossings in our upcoming race, and so much more. Thanks Elise for stepping in at the last minute and helping me get an episode out this week! I had so much fun chatting with you.I'd love to keep this series going, so if you have an interesting nutrition story to share and you'd like to be on my show, send me an email or DM on Instagram about yourself! I'd love to hear from you. Lastly - please help me grow this show so I can keep it going! I'm really trying to stick to two episodes a month, but in order to do so, I eventually need to bring in some sponsors to offset some costs. So if you're enjoying all these episodes, be sure to subscribe if you haven't already, please share my show with your friends, and rate/review the show wherever you listen to your podcasts. Today we are going to explore the mental preparation and positive mindset needed to conquer the challenges of ultra running. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a newcomer to the sport, this show is here to help you dig deep, push past your limits, and find the inner strength needed to succeed on the trails. Today we have two really tough runners, Hillary Allen and Addie Bracey, that will help us unlock the secrets and strategies you need to approach every adventure and race with confidence and determination. Hillary Allen is the author of the book, 'Out and Back, a Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds' LINK to Hillary's Tedx CU talk LINK to Hillary's web site Follow Addie's running exploits on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Hillary Allen's story is one for the ages. Her 150 foot fall off of a cliff while leading the skyrunning race series, where she broke 14 bones and risked never walking again, is the kind of story you see in the movies or read in a book. Well, you can read it in her book, Out and Back. We touch on that today, as well as the mental and physical struggles she faced in the aftermath right up through the present. We discuss where her fervor for life comes from, her endless curiosity, her pursuit of science (like real science; organic biochemistry and neurology), and where cycling now fits into her life since her first ever bike race was a little thing called the Unbound 200. Isabel and Stacey are under way with their training from coach Hillary Allen! Intervals and pyramid sets to make it more interesting early on is the goal. Stacey talks about the challenge of switiching from lots of treadmill miles to outside miles and Isabel shares her goal of being able to run up a local route without stopping! Good stuff!
Hillary Allen is an endurance athlete, premier Skyrunner, scientist, author, podcast host, and a supernova of inspiration.
Hillary Allen was one of the top-ranking trail runners in the world in 2017 when a 150-foot fall off a mountain in Norway during a race nearly ended her life. She broke 14 bones, including both feet, both arms, her back, and five ribs. Despite being told she would never compete again, she slowly eased back into running and eventually went back to conquer the race that nearly took her life. These days, she's racing at an even higher level than she was before her accident, and just won her first 100-mile race, the Ultra-trail Cape Town in South Africa. In addition to running, Hillary is a sponsored cyclist, author, and former college science professor. In this interview, she talks about the long road to recovery that involved multiple setbacks (including more broken bones) and a focus on mental resilience. She discusses why she decided to write a book about her experience, and what it's like reliving such a traumatic moment in her life nearly five years later. She talks about her favored discipline, Skyrunning, which features rough terrain and extreme elevation gain, and explains why, even though her goals are bigger than ever, she prefers not to think about her trajectory as a comeback story.
Content warning: eating disorders, trauma If you need a huge dose of inspiration, this episode is for you. Our guest, ultra runner and gravel cyclist Hillary Allen, best known for her incredible comeback after the near-fatal accident she survived during an endurance race in Norway, is the definition of resilience. Hillary is a Boulder-based ultra-endurance athlete who races for both the Brooks running team the Pinarello gravel bike team. She's also a scientist with a Master's degree in neuroscience and physiology, a running coach, and the author of Out and Back, a memoir chronicling her incredible story of recovery and resilience. Hillary was at the pinnacle of her running career, when, while competing in 2017 a sky race in Norway, when one misstep almost cost her life. She fell 150 feet off of a ridge when and had to be airlifted out with a long list of injuries. Doctors said she would never run again. Not only is she running again, she's crushing it. With strength training and gravel cycling in her repertoire, she recently complete her first 100-miler at the UTMB, where she placed third American. In this interview she shares how she got into trail running, her eating disorder recovery, what motivated her through her arduous rehab process, how she manages strength training, running, and cycling, how her creative process helps with her mental health, how she keeps perfectionism at bay, why she wrote her memoir Out and Back, what community means to her, how she healed from trauma, and so much more. If you aren't familiar with Hillary's racing career, it's likely because most of the racing she's done is in Europe where the style and the terrain of the racing suits her; it's what she really loves. Hillary is also the author of the book Out and Back where she chronicles in fine detail exactly what she's had to overcome and what's she's learned.Hillary will readily tell you that she's not the same as she was before her running journey began. She doesn't consider her story one of comebacks; it's one of growth. It's a story punctuated by a near-death fall and then other serious set-backs. Through it all, Hillary has honed the art of growth through adversity, and she's cultivated a lot of skills along the way. In this episode, Hillary brings us up to the present, which very significantly includes her running the 100-mile UTMB, which just took place at the end of August 2022. If you're not totally familiar with UTMB, it can refer to the collection of races that take place over the course of a week in late summer in the Alps, with all of the action based out of Chamonix, France, or it can refer to the UTMB race, which is the premier event of that week of races. The race is a full circumnavigation of Western Europe's highest peak, Mont Blanc. Suffice to say the UTMB festival of events is the largest, most competitive collection of ultra events in the world. When Hillary isn't racing up and down the tough technical terrain in Europe or elsewhere in the world, she's training and racing on the tough technical terrain near her home in Boulder, Colorado. She relayed her story from there just after returning from her time in Chamonix and the UTMB.This episode is sponsored by The Feed, the largest online marketplace for your sports nutrition, offering the brands you know and love, from Skratch Labs, Clif Bar, to Maurten, plus their athlete customized supplements called Feed Formulas. In today's episode, we speak with Hillary Allen about her love for sky running and trail running, and how she fuels for these challenging courses. We'll also dive into how her nutrition changed after her life-threatening injury. About Hillary Allen:My career as an endurance athlete has not been straightforward. Through injury, setbacks and being told I would never run again, I've had to re-think what I consider impossible, as I continued to push myself, believing in my best athletic days ahead.Early in my career, I earned the nickname “Hillygoat” for my love of the uphill and my ability to run fast on steep, technical mountain terrain – a style of running known as Skyrunning. I won the US SkyRunner Series in 2014 in my debut season and since then, I have raced all over the world, racking up wins and course records, establishing myself as one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world. In 2017 I had a life threatening accident, where I fell 150 feet off of a ridge-line during a Skyrace in Tromsø, Norway. I broke a total of 14 bones and I was told I would never run again – let alone compete at the elite level. After several years of rehab and recovery, I made a full recovery and returned to elite level racing, running some of my longest and most challenging races post-accident.I maintain the belief that ‘your best athletic days are ahead of you,' if you're willing to work hard for what you love and never give up on yourself.I also am a scientist, I have a masters degree in neuroscience and physiology and structural biology, I'm a running coach, and a gravel cyclist. Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis and treatment.See you in the next episode!***Join our 2022 Holiday Challenge here: https://p.bttr.to/3Cy1gE8New customers save 10% off all products on our website with the code NEWNR10 here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/products/Find our Menopause Support Meal Plan here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/product/menopause-support-meal-plan/If you would like to work with our practitioners, click here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/work-with-us/If you're interested in sponsoring Nutritional Revolution Podcast, shoot us an email at nutritionalrev@gmail.com.***Mentioned:Hillary AllenWebsite: https://hillaryallen.com/Instagram: @hillygoat_climbsOut and Back: A Runner's Story of Survival Against All Odds: https://amzn.to/3yiFmSESports nutritionKlean Athlete Klean Collagen + Vitamin C: https://amzn.to/3EjWBa9Tart Cherry Juice: https://amzn.to/3MhbMD4Thorne Curcumin Phytosome 500 mg Turmeric Supplement: https://amzn.to/3yihQp1Skratch Wellness Hydration Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/3CEnkwGSkratch Hydration Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/3Maq8VHNuun Sport Tablets: https://amzn.to/3CEJtuXSpring Energy Gels: https://amzn.to/3rHCjj6JoJé Bars: https://amzn.to/3CEKCCH

In 2017, Hillary Allen experienced a life threatening accident that had the potential to completely derail her career as an endurance athlete. She fell 150 feet off a ridge-line during a race in Norway. With 14 broken bones, she was told she'd never run again, and most definitely not compete at an elite level. She overcame the odds and made a full recovery to return to elite level racing. Hillary, nicknamed “Hillygoat” because of her love and skill for running fast on steep, technical mountain terrain, has raced all over the world. In 2021, Hillary published a book about her accident and long road to recovery called Out and Back. Hillary received her masters degree in neuroscience, physiology and structural biology, and is also a running coach. In this podcast, Sonya and Hillary talked about her career as a runner, her injury, overcoming the odds to return better than before and the importance of self-belief to get there. Key Takeaways: Where spirit of adventure came from How she became a runner Exploring curiosity What is sky running Falling off a 150' cliff and almost dying Depression from injury Getting back to sky running post injury Where does self-belief come from How to train for ultra endurance gravel cycling and running
