Today I am talking to Pam Smith. As a follow-up to my episode with Ellie Greenwood, Pam comes on the podcast today to tell her wild Western States 100 story. It is a tale of defeat, triumph, acceptance, lessons learned, and wisdom gained. Admittedly, there were some things that Pam talks about that were hard for me not be able to ask more curiosity questions, dive deeper into and explore in more depth within the confines of this one-hour show. While I try to keep content as safe as possible, there may be some language and concepts brought up that may be activating for people who have disordered eating behaviors or sensitivities around weight. I hope you'll find this narrative nourishing. If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider giving it a 5-star review, or better yet, tell one person you know about it. Word of mouth is the best way to reach people. I greatly appreciate it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Today I am talking to Ellie Greenwood. I have been a fan of Ellie's for a while, following her career for over a decade now. Ellie is a 4-time 100km world champion, she won the prestigious Comrades Marathon in 2014 and she is a former winner and course record holder for the Western States 100. A series of chronic injuries has ended Ellie's competitive career, forcing her to adjust and adapt. We talk about her family dynamics growing up in the UK and her strong internal locus of control. I really enjoyed listening to Ellie's storytelling and her laid back approach to eating. I hope you'll find this narrative nourishing. If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider giving it a 5-star review, or better yet, tell one person you know about it. Word of mouth is the best way to reach people. I greatly appreciate it. “What I would also recommend if anybody wants to win Western States as a woman, they should be 33 years old. Cause if you look at the top 10 times, I think 5 of them are women who are 33.” Ellie Greenwood is a distance runner, 2x winner of Western States 100, a writer, and a running coach. In this episode, Ellie chats with Luis about where she grew up, what she did before her running career, what she studied at university, how she got into running, how Western States came onto her radar, her recollection of running Western States, encountering a bear on the trail, advice to potential runners, where she is at now in her running career, and coaching runners. Imagine you have a favorite race—one you continually dream about winning one day—and on every hard training run and day that you're dragging, you visualize being out there and making it happen. Sarah Biehl kept grinding and manifested her dream—not only breaking the tape at the 60th JFK50, but also shattering Ultra legend Ellie Greenwood's course record by over 6 minutes, running a BLAZING fast 6:05:42! We discuss: going from the huntress to the hunted; learning from past JFK experiences; staying upright on the AT; working with some men in sections and enjoying the company; the mental battles on the towpath; trusting her race plan from her coach, Michael Owen, but also going with her gut; where the fire comes from; mantras—fall down get back up, play your own game; how more prep work on the AT with training partner Rachel Lemcke helped; why pushing her limits in Ultra gets the juices flowing more than chasing a faster marathon (2:39:01 current PR); and running in her 2nd Olympic Marathon Trials. Sarah has HUGE gratitude for the JFK50 community, the volunteers, and for the running community overall. She is so easy to root for and I'm excited to see her chase down some big Ultra goals in 2023! This week we are excited to welcome Sarah Biehl to the podcast. Just a few weeks ago, Sarah reset the course record at the 60th edition of the JFK 50 miler, running 6:05:42. The record was previously held by Ellie Greenwood. Sarah took just over 6 minutes off of Ellie's time. We discuss her lifelong relationship with running, why she decided to start ultrarunning in 2020 and what she's excited to tackle in the sport. Sarah was a pleasure to talk to and we hope you enjoy this conversation as much as we did._____________________________________________Women of Distance is a Chaski Media Production and brought to you by Chaski Endurance Collective, the world's leader in online coaching, community, and travel for endurance athletes. Despite many technical difficulties, we are excited to have Ellie Greenwood join us on the podcast! Ellie Greenwood is one of the best ultra runners of all time in a wide ranging career that span the trails and roads. Ellie is still the course record holder at WS 100 and has won the Comrades marathon as well as two World Championships in the 100k. Was fun to chat with Ellie about some of those performances, the state of the sport, injury and much more!
Two Canadian women stormed their way to podium finishes at this year's Western States Endurance Run. Ailsa MacDonald and Marianne Hogan placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively at the world's oldest 100 mile trail race in California. This is the first time that Canadians have reached the women's podium since Ellie Greenwood set the course record in 2012. On this episode we learn a new tactic to get first in line for a new car and we find that surprise, Texas is hot! Dayna and Natalie are doing great in their training and get some great coaching from Ellie Greenwood once again! Enjoy the show!
Ellie Greenwood is someone you would cheer for, no matter who you were at a race to support. She runs because she simply likes to run, and was won Marathons & some of the world's biggest and most prestigious ultra-marathons, not by trying to beat her competitors, but 'simply' because Ellie likes to run - fast! A back to back Western States champion (and still course record holder), 2 x 100km World Champion, and first British woman to win the Comrades Marathon in South Africa, Ellie's running career wasn't all smooth sailing though. Missing nearly an entire year due to injury at the peak of her career, we dive into how she remained relaxed during this time, and her ability to enjoy situations in races (and in life) where others may see them as overwhelming. This conversation is packed full of take home advice, and one you will no doubt listen to more than once. Ann Trason (born August 30, 1960) is an American ultramarathon runner from Auburn, California. She has broken twenty world records during her career. Trason's ultra career began when she entered the 1985 American River 50 Miler at age 24 and both won and set a course record. She returned 8 years later and dropped her time by an hour to establish the 6:09 female course record that still stands.Trason did not finish her first two times trying to run the Western States 100; in 1987 she dropped out due to knee problems and in 1988, near the finish line, from dehydration. She finished and won it in 1989. She has won Western States 14 times in all, most recently in 2003. She held the women's division course record for 18 years (17:37:51, set in 1994) until it was broken by Ellie Greenwood in 2012.

Ellie Greenwood has a list of accomplishments that will blow your mind. Among others, she has two IAU Wold 100k wins, she was the 1st place female at Western States 100 miler in both 2011 & 2012 where she holds the course record, 1st place female at the 89km Comrades Marathon in 2014, and the winner of the Female Ultra Runner of the Year in 2011, 2012, & 2014. Her long list of wins is inspiring, but what I think is truly awesome about Ellie is her upbeat and fun attitude while facing some serious adversity. She talks about where she is at now and life as a full time coach. The one thing that stood out was she seems to understand her athletes as people and not just runners. She also talks about digging deep at the Comrades Marathon, a story that will leave you chomping at the bit to toe the line! Listen in to our conversation, there is a lot to learn from Ellie! Two-time 100km world champion and Western States 100 record holder, Ellie Greenwood joins regular guest Ian Sharman to talk about what has changed in their Ultrarunning since they began: Gear Nutrition Training Bonus topic: what race would you gift a running friend this Christmas and why? Sharman Ultra - Endurance Coaching
Ellie Greenwood is ultra running royalty. I also got the impression from our chat that she’s incredibly humble and I suspect that description may not sit comfortably with her — but it’s the truth. A 2x winner of one of the world’s most famous and revered races, the Western States Endurance Run 100 (that’s 100mi/160km). In 2012, she also smashed the course record — that record still stands today. She’s also a 2x winner of the World 100km Championship and in 2014 she also won the Comrades Marathon, an 89km race in South Africa, regarded as the world’s oldest and largest ultramarathon. While we touch on those races in this conversation, we spend much of our time behind-the-scenes, with Ellie sharing: - how her athletic identity changed from someone who ran for fun to that of a ‘semi-professional’ and potential winner, - how you don’t need to have the ‘perfect race’ to achieve the best result you can, - her struggle with injuries and her advice on how to get your running ‘fix’ when you’re injured and how to remain optimistic when you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel, - how it took her 2nd win at the Western States 100 for her to finally call herself a 100-mile runner, and - whether she secretly crosses her fingers and hopes that no-one breaks her record at the Western States 100 each year.
