A Spoonful of Courage Dr. Charles Page pt 2 In this day and age in which we live, medical advancements are coming on us a rapid pace. Faster and more detailed. Because of this, medical facilities run sort of a “production line” of people in and out of the offices and hospitals. Gone are the days when doctors actually “knew ”their patients. And the patients trusted the doctor because they believed he understood them and did not treat them as line item on a spreadsheet. Now, there are doctors out there that do have those kinds of relationships with their patients. I've been fortunate to find one where I live that I've been with for 20+ years. Amen. Our guest today is one that has made it his specialty to treat his patients with kindness, respect and dignity. If I lived in East Texas – HE would be my doctor. Praise God. Dr. Charles Page has been practicing surgery for over 25 years and has journeyed with thousands of patients. He is also the author of “A Spoonful of Courage for the Sick and Suffering” – which is an absolutely fabulous book! And the book, , “Spoonful of Courage: Equations to Find Grace in Life's Challenges.” His ministry is also called, “Spoonful of Courage,” which we will be getting into today as well. As an ER Physician, Dr. Charles Page has seen a lot of things happen to people over the years. He is know as the “best guy to see on the worst day of your life!” AMEN! This is part two of fabulous two part conversation with Dr. Charles Page! You emphasize that people are not alone. When facing medical challenges, is it normal for people to feel alone? Like, nobody cares? If you could pick one story from your book that inspired you the most, which story would it be? I do remember one story that I still remember to this day. Can you share the story about the old farmer that would give himself an electric shock to get his heart beating right? I found out you also have your own TV program now? Congratulations! Share a little about that? Dr. Chuck, we are almost out of time. But you shared with me you have a special offer for our listeners today. Can you take this moment to share about that offer? I do appreciate that. Amen. Folks, I've read “A Spoonful of Courage” through – a couple of times. It is, not just a good book, this is GREAT BOOK. Amen! You really, really need to get a copy of this book in your hands. In fact, order two or three. I guarantee, once you read it – you will want to share it. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that you will not want to give it to someone you know. It's that good. Amen! Be sure to click the link for “Spoonful of Courage: Equations to Find Grace in Life's Challenges.” Share the story in this book about pulling the nail out of a man's neck that you experienced… Drop down into the show notes, reach out to Dr. Charles Page at the links provided. Be sure to take him up on this free offer. Praise God! But also, click the link and order a complete copy of “A Spoonful of Courage” and “Spoonful of Courage: Equations to Find...

You were on way back in 2019… episode number 618 or in that area. That was five years and almost 900 episodes ago! Praise God – how have you been, brother? For those that may not have heard our prior conversation, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Dr. Charles Page?” If I remember correctly, last time you were on, I think you mentioned something about you being a “coffee addict” – are you still a coffee connoisseur? In the opening, I mentioned having a physician you can trust. Someone who actually cares about you. I know you call your medical practice a “BUSNISTRY” (combining business and ministry). Can you explain that term for us and how you use that to build that type of relationship with your patients? We were recently on vacation in Texas and my wife had forgotten one of her prescriptions. My doctor had given me his personal cell phone number and had told me to call if I ever needed anything outside of hours. I didn't want to call him, so I texted him. He called back in 10 minutes and told me he had contacted the Pharmacy close to where we were at in Austin and phoned in the refill. I did not have to go through six voice mail messages and hope someone would call me back. That's one reason I have stayed with him for over 20 years. It's also only the second time I've ever had to call him over 20 years as well… I don't know if you give some of your patients your personal phone number, but how do you build a “Busnistry” of trust? There is one story in your book where you share about doing little things the right way. It was a patient with a thyroid problem, is that...

Extreme weather events, particularly heat waves, are no longer abstract concerns but tangible threats impacting our lives. This discussion aims to unveil the profound implications of extreme heat on physical, mental, and communal well-being, emphasizing its interconnectedness with our daily lives. Every facet of our well-being, from the air we breathe to the water we drink, is intricately tied to the health of our planet. Extreme heat and heat waves signify undeniable shifts in our climate, affecting communities, homes, and bodies in often unrecognized ways. Beyond the discomfort of scorching summer days, these events alter the very air composition, making it harder for our bodies to cool down and leading to a surge in heat-related illnesses. Moreover, extreme heat contributes to broader disasters like droughts and wildfires, wreaking havoc on agriculture, ecosystems, and the economy. Urban areas, susceptible to the urban heat island effect, experience prolonged high temperatures, exacerbating energy demands, air quality issues, and health hazards. Recognizing that extreme heat and heat waves are interconnected with various environmental and societal aspects, the call to action is urgent. Mitigating these impacts necessitates a collective effort, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, conserving water and energy, enhancing urban planning, improving emergency preparedness, and raising awareness. By uniting in these efforts, we can safeguard ourselves, our communities, and our planet from the detrimental effects of extreme heat and heat waves, forging a resilient and sustainable future for current and future generations. Host Bernice Butler explores and unpacks some of this with Kristi Dahl of the Union of Concerned Scientists and Catharina Guidice an ER Physician in Los Angeles. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/healthy-radio/support

I am excited to chat with emergency medicine physician Dr. Abiola Oso about his tips to thrive during residency. Dr. Oso is a recent graduate, so he brings a fresh perspective. He is Nigerian but was raised in Atlanta, GA, where he pursued his undergraduate studies and completed medical school at Morehouse School of Medicine, where he served as SGA President. He met his wife in Atlanta, who is an anesthesiologist. They “couples matched” and took their talents to Houston in their respective fields to complete residencies at The University of Houston. His wife and he both served as chief residents in their programs there. He has two beautiful twins, a boy and a girl named Micah & Elijah, who just turned one. He has worked as an ER Physician in the community for almost 2 years. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/urcaringdocs/message

In this episode Maxwell Cooper, MD interviews Alana Arnold, MD, MBA, a pediatric emergency medicine physician in Miami, FL and the Founder of Premier Pediatric Solutions, a consulting company that advises emergency rooms on how to triage and care for pediatric patients. Dr. Arnold sheds light on the fact that many pediatric patients are initially seen in adult emergency rooms that often do not have the proper training and equipment to properly treat children, often resulting in subpar outcomes for patients and unnecessary costs for hospitals. Dr. Arnold's company provides clinical simulations for the physicians and ER staff for common pediatric emergency cases, recommendations for pediatric equipment, and training for when and how to best transfer pediatric patients needing higher level care. Dr. Arnold also discusses the value she has found with her MBA and provides advice for networking. *Views expressed in this podcast are those of the individuals, not their respective institutions Thank you to our sponsor Doc2Doc Lending, the Personal Lending platform designed for Doctors, by Doctors. There are many factors that influence the quality of our lives. At some point in time, we've all felt the pressure of work-related stress and the effects of poor time management, and an unbalanced and unhealthy lifestyle. Even if we don't realize it at first, in the long term all these can be harmful to both our physical and emotional health. In today's episode of The Endurance Cartel, we are joined by Dr. Laurie Boge, an army veteran and ER physician, who shares her thoughts on how aging and stress impact our lives. Laurie used her love for endurance sports as a healing mechanism for the traumatic experiences she's been through while serving in the Iraq war as an emergency medicine physician. During the Covid pandemic, she created “Green Cloud”, an apparel line and the first “girls club” dedicated to supporting women working in the medical field. In today's episode: (01:04) Meet Dr. Laurie Boge, ER Physician, Iron Woman athlete, and founder of Green Cloud Apparel; (02:05) When things don't go as planned- what went wrong in her latest endurance competition; (04:36) Going through menopause; (06:43) Finding the ideal work-life balance- life as an ER Physician and dealing with work-related stress; (12:41) Serving in the Army as an intern in emergency medicine when 9/11 happened- spending her first year after medical residency in the busiest combat hospital in all of Iraq; (25:19) Getting addicted to endurance sports; (29:08) When Covid hit…; (32:01) Creating Green Cloud, the first "girls club” in the medical field; (39:04) Menopause- how do you deal with aging and physical changes as an endurance athlete; (44:02) The Endurance exchange- feeling like a superhuman; (46:01) Her husband, Burke- the most inspirational person in her life; (49:47) Laurie's advice on productivity and time management; Quotes: “More and more I just prioritize what's important for me. I say yes to things that have meaning and I say a lot of no's. I really won't meet friends anymore to go out to dinner at 8 p.m. cause that's when I like to go to bed (...) and then it looks like I'm very productive because I'm accomplishing my goals a little bit easier because that's all I'm focusing on.” “Most people say they are running from something or towards something. I just love running, nothing makes me feel so good. I mean, that's like when I kind of solve my problems, I solve the world's problems. I feel my most beautiful self when I'm sweaty and finishing hard intervals. It's still a struggle to get out the door, but I love running.” “My first year after finishing residency, I was in Baghdad, in the busiest combat hospital in all of Iraq, and it was insane. Those were the worst and best days of my life. That sounds so weird, but to be able to take care of thousands of soldiers and marines was incredible, but also really hard (...) you're used to like, 30 to 50 victims of IEDs so it changes your whole perspective in life for sure.” “When you get there, you're scared for the first week that you're gonna die, and then the last week you're worried cuz you wanna get back home. But in between, you just kind of have to live and you can't live in that fear 24/7. But parents back home, I can't imagine. I mean, my mom was living in fear the entire time.” “I'm 49. Around this age, even a few years before we go through this crazy thing called menopause, and it's like wild hormones and your sleep gets disrupted and your mood gets disrupted and big changes start happening and you kind of have to learn to just go with it rather than fight it. (...)” “Always start with the basics. You gotta get your sleep, you gotta nourish your body. So eat real foods, you know, mostly plant-based, but real foods, one-ingredient items. Try to stay away from the processed stuff (...) and then exercise. (...) You may not be able to do what you used to do, so be okay with that.” Follow Dr. Laurie Bogi: Twitter- https://twitter.com/swimcruiserun Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/laurie_boge/?hl=en Green Cloud Apparel: Website- https://greencloudapparel.com/ Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/greencloudapparel/ Follow Javier: Website- https://endurancecartel.com/ Instagram- https://www.instagram.com/endurancecartel/?hl=en Linkedin- https://www.linkedin.com/in/javierpineda1975/ Twitter- https://twitter.com/endurancecartel Facebook- https://www.facebook.com/javier.pineda2015/ Youtube- https://rb.gy/4iru19 Join our Patron and support The Endurance Cartel Podcast
Growth can be painful, but it's necessary when it comes to becoming an effective leader. In this episode of Transform Your Workplace, host Brandon Laws sits down with Dr. Richard Winters, ER physician and author of You're the Leader: Now What?: Leadership Lessons from Mayo Clinic. The two discuss Dr. Winters' approach to leadership collaboration, decision-making, and growth. TAKEAWAYS The best leaders know when to make a decision based on their experience and when to do so by bringing together people with varied perspectives. Effective leaders approach complex issues as a facilitator, with a clear mind focused on finding the best way forward. If we move forward based on a single perspective, we risk making serious errors. Burnout is an organizational vital sign, and leaders must address it in strategic decision-making. Doing nothing — not innovating or not moving forward — is actually more risky than taking action. ER Physician, filmmaker, popular speaker and travel company founder. Here how it all comes together [Show Summary] Dr. Calvin Sun is an emergency room physician, known for his blog-turned-travel company. During the pandemic, his travel content quickly shifted to real-time COVID updates as he chronicled his experience as an emergency room doctor in Manhattan. He has gathered all of these experiences into his newly released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. Interview with Dr. Calvin Sun, Founder and CEO, The Monsoon Diaries [Show Notes] Welcome for the 493rd episode of Admissions Straight Talk, Accepted's podcast. Thanks for joining me. Given the time of year, I'd like to highlight for today's listeners a wonderful resource if and when you're invited to a medical school interview, Accepted's free download called The Ultimate Guide to Medical School Interview Success. In the guide, you learn how to prepare for interviews, including the difficult questions, how to make sure your body language matches your intent, and what is proper follow-up after your interview. Grab your free copy at accepted.com/ultimatemediv and enhance your chance of acceptance. It's really hard to summarize Dr. Calvin Sun's bio, but I'll try anyway. Calvin graduated from Columbia in 2008 and in 2014, he graduated from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine and then began his residency in emergency medicine at Montefiore and Jacobi Medical Centers. He also was the director of Resident Wellness at Jacobi. In his non-existent spare time during medical school, he somehow managed to found and now runs The Monsoon Diaries, which he describes as a blog-turned-travel company. The Monsoon Diaries organizes flexible budget trips and has gone to over 128 countries in the past six years. He's also a filmmaker, popular speaker and activist in the Asian American community emergency room physician, and, at one time at least, was a clinical assistant professor of Emergency Medicine. Listeners, I invite you to listen to accepted.com/254 for the incredible story of how Calvin Sun became Dr. Sun, founded Monsoon Diaries, the travel company, and portrays his experience as an emergency room physician in Manhattan, the corona pandemic's epicenter in 2020. To start, I'd like to ask you how you came to write your just-released book, The Monsoon Diaries: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing from the ER Frontlines to the Far Reaches of the World. What's the story behind the book? [3:12] The story is my life in a nutshell, in a show-don't-tell fashion. It can also be seen as a love letter of gratitude because it's being released at the tail end of what we hope to be the worst or the end of the pandemic. I was approached by a literary agent two years ago. It was a totally cold approach in January 2021, and they asked if I'd be interested in writing a book. I think I had mentioned to you in our prior podcast, episode 254, that I have this habit of writing, which is what caused my Monsoon Diaries blog to turn into a community. I was writing live and blogging live on my travels while I was a full-time medical student. People started following along and it turned itself into a community. During the pandemic, I did the same thing. We couldn't travel during the pandemic. It was not ethical, so I worked all the time, and I blogged about it in the same way I would on a trip because it was all new territory and new frontiers. That's the only thing I knew how to do to keep myself alive when I couldn't travel. It was the next best thing. People followed along, one of whom was a literary agent who then wanted to turn it into a book so I said, "Sure." One thing led to another, and two years later we now have a book published by Harper Collins in bookstores since September 27th. What do you hope people take away from The Monsoon Diaries? [4:57]
During his tour with German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, throughout the week, Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, made a comment about how Canada would be a reliable source of clean energy for Europe as a solution to their reliance on Russian oil and gas. What he's not sold on, however, is the idea of exporting liquified natural gas. To talk about this, Alex spoke with Dr. Chris Keefer, an ER Physician but also the President of Canadians for Nuclear Energy.

Like many entrepreneurs, John noticed a problem within his work space that he wanted to fix. And another. And another. Over the course of his career, John founded 15 businesses, including NextCare Urgent Care—which he scaled to 60 locations generating over $100M in revenue—and MeMD, a telehealth company that he sold to WalMart in 2011.In this episode, John talks about why efficiency was his core focus in the founding of NextCare and why he hired a CEO to take over the “operator” part of the business instead of running the day-to-day himself. He also talks about the process of selling MeMD to WalMart and why he chose them as the buyer based on what they wanted to do with his company after they bought it. John's ability to maintain his vision across multiple ventures will inspire you to tighten up your own and see what you're really capable of achieving. In 1993, when John noticed the ER was overcrowded with minor illnesses and injuries, he launched his first urgent care practice. The business saw explosive growth, expanding from one to 60 locations during his tenure doing over $100M. Shufeldt has founded about 15 businesses, including NextCare Urgent Care; MeMD, used by more than 450 providers to virtually treat more than 6 million patients (a telehealth company that was sold to WalMart in 2011); and Tribal EM, dedicated to improving the delivery of healthcare for Indigenous People. In addition to his medical degree, he has an MBA, a law degree and a Six Sigma black belt. Quotes: 12:03 - “We grow the business, then hire the staff. But what I try to do over the years is, ‘Let’s build this thing to handle a hundred patients a day officially, then when we’re only at 50 or 60, we’ll be screamin’.” - John Shufeldt 15:58 - “I was never one of those fragile perfects who got knocked off the ledge and laid there. I was always like, ‘So?’ and just got back up, because I was so used to screwing this up.” - John Shufeldt 23:31 - “I’ve always coached people to have that fallback. I realized, in
