Jenn speaks to Andy Curtain founder of former Shanghai based Kung Fu Komedy. Having just graduated from law school in Melbourne, Andy decided to leave Australia and move to China to explore the world. He started off finding 9-5 jobs then stumbled upon creating a community with other comedians to share laughter with people living in China. Comedy clubs popped up in major non-Western cities around the world from around 2009. Then in 2010 Andy and his business partners founded the first comedy club in China, Kung Fu Komedy. From the many ups and downs of this journey of building this community Andy shares the many pivotal points that he went through and learned in the process to where he is at today. In short, laughter is healing in the times we live in today! (Recorded on August 10, 2022)About Andy:Andy Curtain, moved to Shanghai in 2009 from Melbourne, and lived an insane 10 years there before moving to Hong Kong. From 2010 to 2017 China's opening up to the world hit a peak and Shanghai became the most exciting place to live on earth. Until it all came crashing down.Andy started China's local comedy scene, launched several comedy clubs, toured the country performing standup in English and Chinese, worked on the online series Mamahuhu, got squashed by the Cultural Bureau, married a Russian Korean, has two kids, and sort of lived to tell the tale.Episode Resources: WebsiteIGYoutubeTwitter

In this podcast episode we chat with long term China Expat https://www.instagram.com/andycurtain/?hl=en (Andy Curtain) about his geographical movement from Melbourne, Australia to Shanghai, China and what effect it had on his online activities/presence. Even though he was online quite early in Australia with IRC and ICQ, he admits that most of his current online activities have been utility based, focusing on his stand up comedy promotions and community building. As a fellow Content Creator (and Influencer, lol), I find it very interesting that the making of his podcast, http://www.kungfukomedy.com/series/stuck-middle/ (Stuck in the Middle), helps him process his own comedic material. There is so much to say about Andy, the deep impression he has made on the stand up comedy scene in China and his own business savvy that has impacted how I think of my own creative endeavors on and offline in the short time since this interview took place. But for now I will just say thank you Andy for coming on the show and sharing your story. More info:

In this podcast episode we chat with long term China Expat Andy Curtain about his geographical movement from Melbourne, Australia to Shanghai, China and what effect it had on his online activities/presence. Even though he was online quite early in Australia with IRC and ICQ, he admits that most of his current online activities have been utility based, focusing on his stand up comedy promotions and community building. As a fellow Content Creator (and Influencer, lol), I find it very interesting that the making of his podcast, Stuck in the Middle, helps him process his own comedic material. There is so much to say about Andy, the deep impression he has made on the stand up comedy scene in China and his own business savvy that has impacted how I think of my own creative endeavors on and offline in the short time since this interview took place. But for now I will just say thank you Andy for coming on the show and sharing your story. About 2 years ago Comedian Andy Curtain let us dig into his virtual past on Geopats Online (then called Virtual Expats). In that interview, we dug into how his online habits changed when he moved from Australia to Shanghai, China more than a decade before. And of course, since then he has moved again, down to Hong Kong specifically. It's so easy to drop all creative projects when relocating to a new place but Andy not only kept his creative juices flowing but he pivoted his podcast presence to reflect his new place and his more permanent role in the comedy community there.More info: https://www.stephfuccio.com/napodpomo/55-----------------------------Geopats Podcast Network 2 goals for November 2020:1. What was your first online habit? Yesterday we heard from Comedian Andy Curtain about what he's been up to since we chatted last year. In today's episode, we dive into a 10 minute clip from that original conversation/episode with Andy on Geopats Online, where we track how people's onlineness changes when their location changes. And yes, as you can see from the title of this episode, we hit on all important online (and offline?) innovations along the way.More info: https://www.stephfuccio.com/napodpomo/56-----------------------------Geopats Podcast Network 2 goals for November 2020:1.
