In June of 1996, 18-year-old Angie Dodge was found raped and murdered in her Idaho Falls apartment. For Idaho homicide detectives, this case was a big deal. Violent murders like this didn't typically happen in their area, and they were determined to send someone to prison for Angie's murder.

Angie Dodge suffered a terrible fate in the hands of her killer. As one of the cold cases of the 20th century, the investigation led to a false accusation. The wrongly identified culprit unfortunately spent 20 years in prison before the authorities finally traced the real perpetrator. Because of an intense DNA matching technology and the convict's confession, the case was finally solved. In the second part of the two-episode interview with Tom Myers, discussions about the importance of interviews and interrogations were brought up. In a world where crimes continue to plague people, it's up to the authorities to be extra vigilant and discerning when it comes to their investigation. Liars can hide really well but authorities should know how to identify them. Technology paves the way for accuracy. Equipment that analyze genetics can trace the culprit. Skills of probing are also integral in identifying the suspect. “You can't expect to be in a bad situation and come out of that okay. On June 13, 1996 an 18-year-old woman was getting ready for bed in her apartment when she was viscously attacked, raped and murdered. Police quickly honed in on a 19-year-old acquaintance and theorized he took part in the murder along with another accomplice, as his DNA did not match semen found at the scene. For 20 years an innocent man sat in prison, desperately proclaiming his innocence, while her mother and police continued to search for her other attacker. He was eventually released in 2017 but in 2019 her real killer was finally revealed. This is the story of Angie Dodge. On June 13, 1996, 18-year-old Angie Dodge was found in her apartment in Idaho Falls brutally raped and murdered. Despite having plenty of DNA in the case, police quickly ran out of suspects until the following January, when a new lead brought them to 20-year-old Christopher Tapp. His DNA didn't match that left at the crime scene, but that didn't matter - not after he gave police a confession about his involvement. By trial, Chris recanted his confession, saying it was coerced, but why would anyone confess to something they hadn't done? 18-year old Angie Dodge had just moved into her first apartment in 1996 when her life was suddenly and violently snuffed out. In 1998, a young man named Christopher Tapp was convicted of Angie’s murder. The prosecution’s case relied on Christopher’s confession. The defense argued that the confession was coerced and that the state was ignoring DNA evidence from an unknown suspect. Angie’s heartbroken mother, Carol Dodge, was left to wonder about the suspect still at large. After years of seeking the truth, Carol Dodge watched Christopher’s confession tapes. Appalled by the interrogations, she reached out to an expert in false confessions, who in turn contacted the Innocence Project. But it would take several more years and the work of experts in DNA genealogy to find Angie’s real killer and exonerate Christopher Tapp. The use of genealogical familial searching and its success in this and other cases has exciting implications for future criminal investigations. The public has shown approval for the technique overall; however, there are privacy concerns over the use of private genetic data to implicate a person or his/her relatives in a crime.Join us at the quiet end for The Murder of Angie Dodge. By putting together a DNA profile and identifying relatives in the suspect’s family tree, genealogist CeCe Moore and a DNA consulting firm called Parabon were able to find Angie’s killer. Carol Dodge had been crucial in the exoneration of her daughter’s convicted killer Chris Tapp, casting a bright light on the failings of our criminal justice system. If not for her determination, Chris would still be an innocent man in prison as Angie’s real killer walked free.
Angie Dodge was brutally murdered in 1996. Twenty-three years later her mother with help from CeCe Moore and Parabon NanoLabs found her killer. DNA, a secret leaf on a family tree and an obscure obituary would lead them to Brian Dripps. #angiedodge #briandripps #cecemoore #parabon

Two friends knock on Angie Dodge's door and find her lying on the floor. She had been raped, stabbed and her throat cut. The police arrive, take DNA samples from the scene and start rounding up suspects. Chris Tapp was 20 years old at the time and though his DNA did not match the crime scene samples, he was called in. A few questions turned into over 100 hours of interrogations and seven polygraph tests. By the end of it, Chris confesses to killing Angie – a crime he had no recollection of committing. On this episode of Bad People, presenters Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen discuss how you might end up confessing to a crime you didn't commit. Eric Ray and Glenn Langenburg discuss two forensic cases that have been in the news in the past few years. First, the guys talk about the recent Golden State Killer case. How did DNA testing and genealogy combine to solve these 40 year old crimes? What databases were accessed and was it ethical to do so? Secondly, Eric and Glenn discuss how accessing profiles of Y chromosomes from online sites led Idaho Falls detectives to Michael Usry, Jr. In 1996 Angie Dodge was murdered and Chris Tapp has been in prison for decades, but things get turned upside down when new technology comes into play.
