It's NBA Finals week, Game 2 is tonight, and the Shoot Around boys are doing exactly what they do on Fridays — talking about everything except the thing you'd expect them to talk about.   They kick things off with a listener correction from Twitter — turns out the Coach of the Year who got fired before the award came in was Dwayne Casey, not Lloyd Pierce (Rob was close). From there it's a full dive into the hero-to-villain arc: OKC went from everyone's favorite upstart to the team everyone wanted to see lose, almost overnight. Rob points to the Kansas City Chiefs as the gold standard of that flip — and SGA's habit of spending time on the floor didn't exactly help Oklahoma City's cause this year.   Then it's a two-part debate: who should retire and go to the broadcast desk, and who do you wish had kept playing? Russell Wilson heading to the CBS pregame show kicks things off, and the guys run through Draymond, Klay Thompson (Rob thinks he'd surprise people), Mike Trout, and Jameis Winston — who they both agree has a big bag waiting for him somewhere, whether it's Barstool or a network couch next to Shannon Sharpe and Gronk.   On the comeback side — Serena Williams is returning to play doubles at the HSBC Championships, which gets them talking about who they'd most want to see suit back up. Rob's answer: Pete Sampras. Casual greatness, no ego, just stroll in and handle business. Brandon picks Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson — two guys who deserved so much better than what Detroit gave them.   And then the closer — the hot mic segment that was teased all week on Tuesday's show. LSU pitcher Devin Shearer gets warned by the umps, ESPN gets told to turn the field mics down, ESPN does not turn the field mics down. And then there's the Nebraska-Oklahoma State softball game, where an unidentified voice — still a mystery — delivered what might be the most unexpected phrase ever broadcast live on ESPN. Rob and Brandon's debate about who exactly says "ball sack" at a softball game is genuinely one of the funnier bits they've done.   In this episode: OKC's hero-to-villain arc — and the Kansas City Chiefs comparison SGA's foul-baiting and why fans turned on Oklahoma City Russell Wilson heads to CBS — who else should retire and hit the desk? Klay Thompson as a broadcast sleeper pick Jameis Winston's future: Barstool or network TV? Shannon Sharpe and the importance of letting personalities breathe Serena Williams making her doubles comeback at HSBC Championships Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson — the ones who got away Rob Horry on Pete Sampras: the definition of casual greatness LSU's Devin Shearer hot mic moment — ESPN was warned The mystery 'ball sack' voice at the Nebraska-Oklahoma State softball game   New episodes drop Tuesday and Friday. Ragnow Bonus Dispute Hits the Detroit Lions The Detroit Lions asked Frank Ragnow to repay part of his signing bonus after he stopped playing last season. He is no longer with the team. He tried to return around Thanksgiving but was not physically able to do it. The amount sought is not public. The move ignited a firestorm around the NFL and inside the fan base. The team's position is clear. A contract was signed. The terms were not fulfilled. The franchise believes in setting precedent. The Lions have followed this policy before, including with Calvin Johnson and Barry Sanders. Deterrence is part of the logic. If a player leaves early, the team can ask for money back. That is the business case the Detroit Lions are leaning on. Optics, Player Reactions, and Free Agency Fallout The optics are ugly. Even if the policy stands, it looks petty and cheap to many. That perception matters. Players see it. Agents see it. In a tight market, one bad vibe can send a free agent to another city. Alex Anzalone bristled at it. Quandre Diggs spoke up too. Diggs has always said he loved Detroit. His tenure ended when Matt Patricia shipped him out, and he flourished after. He called this move a bad look. That sentiment travels around the NFL, and it sticks. The Detroit Lions do not want to be viewed as doing their own guys dirty. The calculation is cold. Save some money now and risk losing goodwill later. The Detroit Lions Podcast framed it squarely: perception could be the difference when a prominent free agent chooses between Detroit and Team X. Leverage, Policy, and What Players Can Do TJ Lang cut to the core. If you want to protect your money, make the team release you. You lose leverage when you retire. That is the hard line of NFL contracts. Once you retire, the club can pursue bonus payback under its policy. If the team releases you, it cannot. Rod Wood made it known the Lions are seeking repayment. Dave Burkett reported it. The policy predates this regime. It ties back to the same stance used with Sanders and Johnson. The Lions see consistency. Many see a needless wound. Frank Ragnow's situation is complicated. He gave what he could. He tried to come back at Thanksgiving. He could not. Now the team wants money back, and the blowback is real. The Detroit Lions want to enforce standards. The rest of the NFL is judging the standard they chose. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #frankragnow #signingbonusrepayment #chuckclark #dametriouscrownover #nflfreeagencyperception #lionsfanreaction Learn more about your ad choices. 0:00 - The Avalanche doused the Calgary Flames 9-2 last night at Ball Arena and scored multiple power play goals! Plural! It was almost a perfect night, except for one thing. Cale Makar left the game and didn't return because of an "upper body injury." We haven't received any updates yet. How concerned are we? How concerned did Coach Bednar sound in his postgame presser yesterday?13:52 - The Lions signed Center Frank Ragnow out of retirement late last season, but he didn't play a snap for them because he didn't pass his physical. He had a Grade 3 hamstring strain! Turns out, he had to pay back part of his signing bonus. The Lions claim that they've made other players do this before, like Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson, so the precedent has been set. Really? Come on, Fords. You guys aren't low on cash. Let the man keep his money. After that, George Paton spoke at the NFL Owners meeting yesterday and said he likes the RB room. Of course he's going to say that. But, we're not sure we like it as much as he does! There's still plenty of room for improvement.31:47 - Oh, by the way...the referee who Dan Hurley (allegedly) headbutted was asked about the incident and said the whole "incident" was nothing. They looked at each other. That's it. Oh, by the way...NASA is going back to the moon soon and nobody here on Earth seems to care about it. Oh, by the way...The NFL expanded their "Global Markets Program" for the upcoming season. The New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns were given the market rights for Vic's Motherland.

Most people know Herman Moore as the Detroit Lions' greatest wide receiver. The records. The Pro Bowls. What they don't know is what happened after.Herman left the NFL and walked straight into one of the hardest seasons of his life. Business. He lost nearly everything. Got told no by banks, investors, and people who couldn't see past the helmet. He had to rebuild from scratch, in a world that kept boxing him in as just an athlete. He didn't leave. He didn't quit. He stayed in Michigan, bet on himself when no one else would, and eventually built one of the largest Cinnabon franchise operations in the country, owning the entire Michigan market and expanding into Florida. But this conversation goes deeper than franchise wins. Herman talks about the version of himself that almost walked away from football after his rookie year. About the coaching change that broke his trust in the game. About watching his legacy sit in Barry Sanders' shadow for decades and not being sure who gets to tell your story. We covered:→ How Herman lost nearly everything in business and what it took to rebuild→ What it's really like sharing a legacy with one of the greatest players in NFL history→ Why athletes are uniquely vulnerable when they leave sports and how Herman navigated it→ The real fear he carries as an entrepreneur that most people would never admitThank you, Herman, for giving this conversation everything. In 1967 the Temptations were hitting their prime with their "classic 5 lineup" just coming off their major breakthrough album Back In Black with their "classic 5" era lineup of singers, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Paul Williams. The Temptations With A Lot O' Soul made it to #7 on Billboard album charts and was their biggest selling album from their classic 5 era. The album featured hits like (I Know) I'm Losing You, All I Need, You're My Everything & more. The great Funk Brothers provided their music and Norman Whitfield writing and production was all over the album as usual. This album continued The Temptations unique one of a kind soul music and style. David Ruffin was solidified as the main lead singer, but valuable contributions and lead vocals was still provided by the other members. This was Zeus' pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find out all about Zeus' man crush on David Ruffin and why yesterday football stars from Tecmo Bowl and more like Warren Moon, Barry Sanders and Dennis Green make appearances! The man bans people left and right—hilarious as hell, and we can't stop watching. We slide into the vault with the 2014 Fappening leaks. "Probably illegal to have," but proceed to scroll anyway. Classic GDS. Politics hits hard: Trump cult brainwashing, Epstein files dropping. Sobriety reflections, family losses (friend suicide, mentor Alzheimer's, aunt regrets), grandkids future worries, pronoun fatigue, pride nights in sports killing the vibe, feminism over-pushing, bullies building mental toughness. T-ball trophies, no failure prep for real life, Trump as that embarrassing uncle at Thanksgiving. Baseball celebrations creeping from softball girls? Barry Sanders humility vs. Ricky Henderson showboat. Old man phase activated: Get off the lawn, pick battles, focus on solutions. We end on urgency—loss resets your brain, make time count, bottle emotions like the old days but open up more. Drunk and ridiculous was fun; sober and serious hits different. Zero filter. Classic Goin' Deep—grab tissues (for laughing or crying, your call) Listen in. Go Deep.

The Magic of the Five: College Football's Most Iconic Number? In the cathedral of college football, certain numbers carry a weight that transcends the fabric they're stitched onto. But while the "No. 1" is often a self-proclaimed title and "No. 7" belongs to the gunslingers, the Number 5 has always hit differently. It is the digit of the ultimate "X-factor"—the jersey worn by the players who didn't just break tackles, they broke the spirit of opposing fanbases. From the breathtaking North-South lightning of Reggie Bush in the Coliseum to the dual-threat dominance of Vince Young on the fast tracks of the Big 12, wearing the number five has historically been a signal that something impossible was about to happen. It represents a specific lineage of speed, swagger, and "Heisman moments."But when you look back at the decades of highlight reels and championship rings, who truly wore it best? We are diving into the archives to rank the legends who transformed a simple single digit into a symbol of collegiate immortality.Top Candidates Not in the Hall of Fame:Pat White (West Virginia)A pioneer of the spread option offense, White became the first quarterback in college football history to start and win four consecutive bowl games. His incredible rushing ability transformed West Virginia into a national powerhouse and set the blueprint for the modern dual-threat quarterback.Christian McCaffrey (Stanford)McCaffrey shattered Barry Sanders' single-season all-purpose yards record in 2015, proving that a running back could be just as dangerous as a receiver and return specialist. His versatility at Stanford forced a re-evaluation of how Heisman-caliber players are measured across multiple phases of the game.Manti Te'o (Notre Dame)Te'o was the emotional and defensive heartbeat of Notre Dame's 2012 undefeated regular season, becoming one of the most decorated defensive players in history by sweeping nearly every major award. He remains a symbol of the "linebacker as a superstar," finishing as a rare Heisman Trophy runner-up from the defensive side of the ball.Larry Johnson (Penn State) Larry Johnson delivered one of the most dominant single seasons in college history in 2002, becoming only the ninth player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a regular season. His explosive senior year earned him the Maxwell and Doak Walker Awards, cementing his legacy as one of the premier power backs in Big Ten history.Heisman Winners of Jersey 5Paul Hornung (Notre Dame)Known as "The Golden Boy," Hornung holds the unique distinction of being the only player to win the Heisman Trophy while playing for a losing team (2-8 in 1956). He was a versatile "triple-threat" who led his team in passing, rushing, scoring, and kickoff returns.Reggie Bush (USC)One of the most electric playmakers in history, Bush was the centerpiece of the mid-2000s USC dynasty, combining elite speed and agility to redefine the "all-purpose" back. His 2005 season remains legendary for its highlight-reel runs and its role in keeping USC at the pinnacle of the sport during the BCS era.Jayden Daniels (LSU/Arizona State)A dual-threat sensation, Jayden Daniels became the first player in FBS history to pass for 12,000 yards and rush for 3,000 yards in a career. His 2023 Heisman Trophy-winning season at LSU was statistically historic, as he led the nation in total offense and set the record for the highest passer rating in a single season.Jameis Winston (Florida State)Jameis Winston made history in 2013 as the youngest player ever to win the Heisman Trophy while leading Florida State to an undefeated season and a BCS National Championship. During his two years as a starter, he lost only one game and restored the Seminoles to a position of national dominance through

He finished fourth in the voting, with 348 points (22-1st place, 83-2nd place and 116-3rd place points). Ball’s fourth-place finish was the highest in Wisconsin history for a non-winner of the award, until Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon finished second behind Oregon Ducks quarterback Marcus Mariota in 2014. He was joined by teammate Russell Wilson, who also received votes. On January 2, 2012, Ball scored his 39th touchdown of the season, tying him with Barry Sanders for most touchdowns in a single FBS season. He finished the season with a NCAA-leading 1,923 rushing yards and 33 rushing touchdowns, while adding 24 receptions for 306 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Detroit Lions Make A Statement When They Had To The Detroit Lions did not just beat the Dallas Cowboys. They answered a question the rest of the NFL was starting to whisper: could this team still reach the gear it showed last year when everything mattered. A 44–30 win over Dallas at Ford Field in a must win spot is not perfection, but it is proof of concept. This is what the Lions offense is supposed to look like when it breathes, and what this defense looks like when it steals possessions instead of just surviving. Jared Goff, Jahmyr Gibbs and an Offensive Line That Finally Settled This felt like a reset game for Jared Goff. After weeks of interior chaos and happy feet, he played like a quarterback who trusted what was in front of him, finishing with a 121 passer rating and command of the entire field. He did not just lock onto Amon Ra St. Brown. He spread it around. St. Brown went 6 for 92 on one good ankle. Jameson Williams added 7 for 96 in what might be his most complete game as a pro. The star, though, continues to be Jahmyr Gibbs. He is no longer just a fun wrinkle in the playbook. He is the problem defenses cannot solve. Seventy seven receiving yards, a series of ankle erasers in space, and the constant threat that any touch might become a house call. This is the first Lions player since Barry Sanders who genuinely makes you lean forward every time he has the ball. Quietly, the big shift up front was Miles Frazier. Once the rookie stepped in at left guard for Tristan Colon, the protection and run fits stopped looking like a fire drill. Frazier buried people on duo and inside zone, climbed to the second level with bad intentions, and gave both Goff and David Montgomery room to operate. Monty responded with 60 hard rushing yards and looked far closer to the back we saw last season than the guy fighting for air against Philadelphia. If this is who the offensive line can be with Frazier settling in and the tackles relatively healthy, Detroit's playbook opens back up. Shot plays to Williams, option routes for St. Brown, and Gibbs isolated on linebackers is how the Lions offense stresses an entire defense. Defense, Special Teams and the NFC Playoff Picture The Lions defense did not dominate Dallas statistically, but it did what great units do in big games. It turned the ball over. Fourteen points came directly off Cowboys mistakes. Jack Campbell flew around again, DJ Reed battled with CeeDee Lamb until the concussion, and the front made Dak Prescott uncomfortable enough to force high risk throws. Special teams finally flipped a field too. Tom Kennedy looked like he had been waiting five years for those returns, hitting seams at full speed and giving the offense short grass it has been missing all season. That is how complementary football is supposed to look in a real playoff race. In the NFC playoff picture, the win keeps the Detroit Lions alive for more than just a wild card berth. It keeps pressure on Green Bay and Chicago, and it turns next week's trip to play the Los Angeles Rams into a leverage game instead of a funeral. Run the ball the way Carolina just did against the Rams, protect Goff the way they did against Dallas, and Detroit can turn this one statement into the start of a December run. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvYN107viHw Get yourself a Classic Detroit t-shirt here! First-Half Flames, Second-Half Fix The Detroit Lions survived a nail biter against the New York Giants. It was a big NFL win, but it started ugly. The defense looked disorganized. Misfits. Miscommunication. The Giants scored more in the first half than Philadelphia managed across four quarters. That set the tone. The week's theme inside Allen Park was firefighting. Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard called his unit the firefighters. Dan Campbell leaned into it too. In the first half, everything burned. After halftime, the Lions put the fire out. Structure returned. Tackles stuck. The scoreboard slowed. That resilience, not the chaos, is the lasting note. This Detroit Lions Podcast recap keeps the focus on cause and effect. The early mess forced the defense to respond. They did. The win stands because they adjusted, not because the opening plan worked. That is a useful truth with a short week ahead. Jahmyr Gibbs, Star Power in Full View Jahmyr Gibbs tilted the field. Again. He is the biggest offensive star the Detroit Lions have had since Calvin Johnson. Before that, Barry Sanders. That is the lineage described, and the tape backs it. Gibbs changes leverage with one cut. He erases angles in space. He is lethal in the run game and the pass game. The national conversation is finally catching up to what Detroit already knows. Touches will always be the debate. Some want more Gibbs. Some want more David Montgomery. The truth is simpler. There is only one player on this offense, and maybe in this league, who can do what Gibbs can do snap to snap. He must be a focal point against Green Bay on Thanksgiving. Every motion, every screen, every counter that stresses rules should run through 26. Campbell's Call Sheet and the Sideline Clock Dan Campbell taking over play calling midseason was a gamble. It has lifted the offense, but it has a cost. Game management suffered against the Giants. Timeouts were misused. The challenge process faltered. Too much traffic on the headset, and too much on one person. That is the trade-off when the head coach calls plays instead of John Morton. The Lions can live with some inefficiency if the sequencing and feel stay hot. But the margin is thin with six games left and the Packers next. Campbell must evolve weekly. Clean the clock work. Streamline the challenge mechanics. Keep the creativity. The team cannot keep fixing the plane at altitude. Amon-Ra's Pain, Packers on Deck Amon-Ra St. Brown is playing hurt. The drops tell the story. He had two all of last season. He has two or three in back-to-back weeks now. And yet he still led the team in catches and yards. The toughness is obvious. The production remains. That balance will matter on Thursday at Ford Field against the Packers. The enemies list shifts after a win like this. Green Bay tops it. Firefighting metaphors can stay in the past. The Detroit Lions need clean starts, Gibbs in rhythm, and a calmer sideline clock. Do that, and the next Detroit Lions Podcast will be breaking down a statement Thanksgiving win. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvi2PQZFnYA #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #newyorkgiants #miscommunication #kelvinsheppard #firefighters #dancampbell #playcalling #gamemanagement #timeouts #challengeprocess Learn more about your ad choices.
