This week on the show, to help honor Black History Month, we bring you a conversation with members of the foundational gospel group The Blind Boys Of Alabama - including longtime singer Ricky McKinnie, and beloved senior member Jimmy Carter who has been with the group for four decades. Formed in the late 1930s with talent discovered at the Alabama Institute Of The Negro Blind, the troupe has superseded its limitations by bringing its own high-spirited version of jubilee gospel throughout the world. Their music was often the backdrop to the civil rights movement as Martin Luther King JR. toured the south, and Jimmy and Ricky are amazed and grateful that their message was still ringing true during the Black Lives Matter protest movement of the tumultuous last year. While the members of the band have changed through history, the group has stayed steadfast to preserving a kinetic church-based music that doesn't seek to evangelize, but can bring people of all faiths together. Indeed, watching Jimmy and the other bespectacled members walk with hands on each other's shoulders into the youthful crowds of adoring festival goers from Bonnarroo to Jazzfest is really something to behold. Their body of work continues to grow. In the last few decades they've gamely collaborated with a wide range of secular artists from Peter Gabriel to Ben Harper to Bonnie Raitt, made an album with Bon Iver (the stellar 2013 release I'll Find A Way) and shrewdly reworked the ominous Tom Waits classic “Way Down In The Hole” which became the theme for HBO's The Wire. Their newest full length Almost Home, a treatise on morality and mortality, is particularly moving. It features songs written by Marc Cohn, Valerie June, The North Mississippi All Stars and many others - and was the last record that longtime member and bandleader Clarance Fountain was a part of before he passed away. Fountain was part of the group for for nearly sixty years. As Jimmy playfully mentions throughout the conversation, they've never let being blind stand in the way of doing what they do best: putting on a show. They're entertainers at heart and it's so small feat that they've brought a nearly lost form of swinging, soulful (and expertly arranged) gospel from the small southern towns where they grew up, all the way to the White House, where they've held court for three different presidents. They've won five Grammy Awards along the way. Stick around to the end hear their rich cover of Bob Dylan's “I Shall Be Released”.
With Christmas rapidly approaching and Covid-19 closing in on us again, we thought about not doing a full podcast this week. A quick intro and replay of Jimmy’s most recent stint on the James Valentine’s afternoons on ABC Radio 702, and that ws going to be it. But once we got chatting, all sorts of topic came up, such as, what is this obsession with toilet roll every time there’s a hint of trouble on the horizon? Why do some people “need” to have 10 times as much as they could possibly use outside of a combination of the apocalypse and a seriously bad curry. Listen Here And why does that outweigh other people’s reasonable hope that they'll find a couple of rolls still for sale on the shelf when they pop into the supermarket? Are we turning into Trumpians, with their "me first, stuff you!" attitudes? And talking about those who lack a highly developed sense of community, we hop into the anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers who use their belief in conspiracy theories about microchips in the vaccine and how only old people get Covid-19, to justify not wearing masks on trains and buses in the midst of a pandemic surge. As Jimmy writes in an upcoming column in the Financial Review, there’s no vaccine to prevent or cure stupidity. But, the worrying thing is, the theories might be stupid but some of the people who believe them clearly aren't. We discuss a friend of Sue’s who is an intelligent and articulate woman but who says she probably won’t take the vaccine when it gets here because of fears that it contains a chip created by Bill Gates that will be able to track and monitor us wherever we go. Jimmy likes the idea of this chip and says it could be used the same way as with missing pets, to check who you are and where you belong if you ever go missing (like after a Christmas or New Year’s Eve Party). All this is in the podcast and the transcript. What’s not in the transcript is the session on the James Valentine show but that’s worth a listen, if only for the question about whether or not visiting dogs now have to be allowed in apartment blocks now that by-laws banning pets are defunct? If you haven’t listened before, just turn up your speakers, connect your earpods or plug in your headphones, and click on play near the top of this story. It’s the most fun you’ll have in strata without breaching any by-laws. The transcript Jimmy 00:00 It's kind of hard to stay positive at the moment, isn't it? Sue 00:03 Yeah, I think COVID has come back and kind of depressed us all. Jimmy 00:07 With a vengeance, and a lot of our friends who were planning to go away for Christmas and New Year are stuck at home. Sue 00:14 Yep. Jimmy 00:15 We'll just have to entertain them. Sue 00:17 Yeah, and I think there's a lot of that going on; the ‘new orphans’ are being entertained by friends who've actually bought food and have food, whereas they’ve got empty cupboards. Jimmy 00:26 But I was in the supermarket the other day, and, empty toilet roll shelves! They were filling them up again, so obviously, they're ready for it this time, but what is this strange obsession with… Sue 00:39 It's good news for my local newsagent. I don't know if you've seen it, but it’s packed with toilet rolls, and hand sanitizer because I think it arrived all a bit too late for the last one. Jimmy 00:51 So, he's had it in a cupboard somewhere, or a warehouse? Sue 00:53 No, not at all; it’s completely taken over the shop. All the newspapers and magazines and cards and lollies are all kind of around the edge, because he's got so much stock. He's obviously got nowhere else to put it. Hopefully, this will be good news for him at least, because I do feel sorry for him. He's obviously incredibly over-ordered. It's so sad every time you go in here. Jimmy 01:17 Anyway, we will try and keep your spirits up. I'm Jimmy Thomson. Sue 01:30

Pastors Jimmy and Kim Witcher love Jesus. No, REALLY!! They could LITERALLY talk about life with Jesus all day long. But, if you are wondering how they came to know Jesus in the first place, this is the podcast for you! In this episode Jimmy and Kim tell their personal Jesus stories—specifically how they each came to understand that God desires relationship, not performance. Show Notes When we fixate on seeking forgiveness for sin, both past and present, we end up missing the beauty and joy of a life spent in relationship with Jesus! The truth is, our sins were completely dealt with at the cross! Which means, that when we make mistakes, of any kind, God isn’t angry! He is simply present and ready to redirect us in love, compassion, and empowering grace! As Jimmy and Kim explain, going from a transactional mindset to a relational mindset with God changes EVERYTHING!
In this week’s Flat Chat Wrap podcast we encounter the best and worst in apartment living, from negative equity in off-the plan purchases, to multiple tenants causing parking chaos in a block that simply doesn’t know how to enforce their own by-laws. In between, as some positive relief, we chat to an architect who won four gongs at the recent NSW Architects award, including for a revolutionary high-end high-rises, as well as an equally ground-breaking boarding house. Off-the-plan pain But first the issue of people who paid a deposits on off-the-plan apartments a couple of years ago, and have watched property values shrink and in some cases their jobs disappear because of the pandemic, just as their new flat is ready for occupancy. This item was inspired by this interview with ABC NewsRadio’s Sandy Aloisi – and you can hear a snatch of it on the podcast – which was in turn inspired by this story in the AFR. As Jimmy and Sue discuss, it’s not just a matter of walking away from the 10 percent deposit, which may cost less than completing the sale of a now over-priced unit for which you can’t get a mortgage anyway. The developers can sue for the difference between your surrendered deposit and the reduced price of the apartment, as well as legal costs. Any way you look at it, it’s a lose-lose situation for the apartment buyer. Moving on to happier thoughts, we chat to Philip Thalis the award-winning architect behind the spectacularly innovative Verve Building in Newcastle, NSW, pictured here at the head of last week’s podcast show notes. The Verve isn’t just a smart looking block, Philip has worked hard to make sure it contributes to the local environment and community. Boarding house Philip also talks about the “new generation” boarding house he designed for five Muslim brothers who wanted a project to show off their concreting skills (seriously!). Boarding houses have a bad name in property development, not least, says Philip, because there are almost no quality controls over the finished projects, which can be cheap and very nasty. He’s hoping his project will not only inspire other developers to try a bit harder, but encourage the government to put some basic standards into the design and construction of accommodation that has previously had an terrible reputation. Parking madness Then there’s a story straight off the Forum, where a strata scheme is suffering parking madness and they simply don’t know what to do … especially when they can’t even identify the tenants and sub-tenants in the offending unit. And finally our Hey Marthas take us back to the architecture awards and the toilet block, pictured above, that has its designer flushed with success. That’s all in this week’s bumper edition of the Flat Chat Wrap. As Jimmy reminded us this weekend, "When people's pain becomes our passion, we start moving in purpose." Trying to help people without actually caring about them is exhausting. However, when we start to care about people, we naturally begin making room in our lives for those who tend to be ignored.
How do you give a eulogy when you can’t think of one good thing to say? A poignant, funny, and candid look at grief, family secrets, difficult people, and learning to look behind the facade. As if being stuffed into last year’s dress pants at his cousin’s wake weren’t uncomfortable enough, thirteen-year-old Jimmy has just learned from his mother that he has to say a few words at the funeral the next day. Why him? What could he possibly say about his cousin, who ruined everything they did? He can’t recall one birthday party, family gathering, or school event with Patrick that didn’t result in injury or destruction. As Jimmy attempts to navigate the odd social norms of the wake, he draws on humor, heartfelt concern, and a good deal of angst while racking his brain and his memory for a decent and meaningful memory to share. But it’s not until faced with a microphone that the realization finally hits him: it’s not the words that are spoken that matter the most, but those that are truly heard.
As Jimmy's behavior on the show reaches its apex of sleaze, hope of redemption may be be slim, but hope of a recap? That's a different story. Chris and John are here to overthink "Fall," the second-to-last episode of Better Call Saul's third season.
As Jimmy and Joe go back to Graeme Goldsworthy little gem, Gospel and Kingdom, they dive into chapter 5, "Covenant and Kingdom". What is the Kingdom of God, and how is it presented in the Bible? Where do we first see the Kingdom, and what place does the kingdom have in different parts of Scripture? Is the Kingdom a present reality or a future hope? What impact should our citizenship in the Kingdom of God have in our daily lives in this world? If you are joining in now, be sure to pick up The Goldsworthy Trilogy. Happy New Year, suckas! Almost. As Jimmy and Joe wrap up 2017 they sit down to talk about the idea of resolutions. Earlier this year the guys covered Resolutions and Repentance, but in this episode they talk about what makes a resolution good. But first, just for fun, they walk through some of the "resolutions" passed by the Southern Baptist Convention. Some are a bit crazy. Some are good. You can search all the resolutions passed by the SBC here. You ready for the new Doctrine and Devotion website? It's days away. Before its launch on January 1 the website will be down for a day or two. But the podcast feed will keep running, so there will be no down time or delay on our audio.

What can be done to normalize the body’s hormone levels? Hi Jimmy and The Doc, I just came across your Keto Talk podcast and thought I would reach out to you for advice about the lap band I had removed due to erosion (hole in the stomach). I was very sad to let go of it. In my research on the effects of the lap band had on my body and eating so very little for so long, I suspect that it has taken a toll on my body and I’m now struggling to lose weight. When I consulted a medical weight loss clinic, they put me on a 1200 calorie, 120g carb diet and I gained weight in the two weeks I did it. That’s what led me to the ketogenic diet to help stave off the weight gain. Do you have any clinical experience or know about any research that looks at the use of keto for former lap banders looking for a way to keep their weight under control? I had my hormones tested and my testosterone came back at zero. I suspect having the lap band decreased my T levels from the stress it put my body through. So if the lap band changed my body’s hormone levels, what else has it changed? Is that why I’m struggling to lose weight like everyone else can? How do I figure out what I need to do since we are not all the same. Thanks so much for your help! Why would blood sugar levels go up when taking long lasting insulin while eating keto? Hey guys, I am currently in the process of reading Keto Clarity and have begun the switch over to burning fat instead of sugar. I am a Type 2 diabetic and inject insulin four times a day. Recently I went on a road trip and forgot to bring my insulin. When I got back home, I checked my blood sugar and saw the best reading I have had in over six months. But here’s where it gets weird—when I took my long lasting insulin, the next day my glucose numbers were higher again. Why in the world would my blood sugar go up when taking insulin while eating a ketogenic diet? Any insights you have on this would be awesome. Craig 2. Could the joint pain in my knees be brought on simply by being in a state of nutritional ketosis? Hello Jimmy and Adam, I am a big fan of your podcast and have been keto for six months losing around 60 pounds. I'm now in the best shape of my life at the age of 30 and feel great with lots of energy and I actually love working out now. However, I’ve noticed I’m dealing with a lot more joint pain now than I did before eating ketogenic, especially in my knees. I thought things would improve now that I’ve taken off some extra weight. I am definitely in ketosis when I test for them and I’m trying to avoid what my mother just went through with a double knee replacement. I feel pain in the joints but don’t have any noticeable inflammation. Is being in ketosis causing this to happen? Thank you so much for your help. Does a ketogenic diet lead to abnormally high liver function test results? Is my liver overstressed by having to metabolize the extra dietary fat? Hi Jimmy and The Doc, A few years back, I had abnormally high liver function test results and my primary care physician was concerned that my numbers got worse because of keto. My AST and ALT were around 100 and they’re supposed to be no higher than 37. At the time she advised me to start eating more carbs and all my numbers that were bad came within the normal range. I started keto and fasting again in 2016 and lost 64 pounds after my third pregnancy. I’m concerned when I go back to see my doctor next month that my liver tests will be bad again. I’m hypothyroid, but I don’t have any known liver or gallbladder issues. Is it possible my liver was overstressed by having to metabolize the extra fat in my ketogenic diet? If so, then does that mean keto isn’t right for me? I sure hope not because I feel so fantastic in ketosis. Thanks for any insight about this and thank you for all you both do! Kelly KETO TALK MAILBOX – Should I strive to have higher levels of blood ketones if I seem to be thriving in my mental clarity and energy when I am barely in ketosis? Hey Jimmy and Adam, I’ve been doing a ketogenic diet for three months as a physically active 27-year old man with 10% body fat. I’ve noticed that I feel so much better when I’m barely in ketosis at around 0.5 mmol—that’s my sweet spot where I have better mental clarity and energy. Anytime I’ve tried pushing blood ketones up by moderating protein more, my ketones rise to 2.0-5.0 mmol, but I don’t feel quite the same mental benefits as I do in the lower level of ketosis. So my question for you guys is this—should I strive for higher ketones and hope these kick in at some point to give me the benefits I desire or should I listen to my body and return to the lower level where I seem to thrive? By the way, you’ll find it interesting that I seem to tolerate more carbohydrates in my diet than more protein. I’ve been able to eat as much as 50g carbs (10% of my caloric intake) without every impacting my ketosis levels while eating just 2% more protein in my diet will kick me out of ketosis completely. Fascinating! I don’t take any supplements and don’t use any sweeteners at all. I’ve yet to find anyone else dealing with this issue, so I’d love to hear an explanation of what might be going on. Jimmy Soni and Rob Goodman are authors of “Rome’s Last Citizen: The Life and Legacy of Cato, Mortal Enemy of Caesar” and their newest book is “A Mind at Play: How Claude Shannon Invented the Information Age.” Jimmy and Rob highlight aspects of their new book by detailing who Claude Shannon is and why he is so fundamental for our everyday lives. Claude Shannon made the entire digital age possible. As Jimmy and Rob said, “He didn’t just think about things, he thought through things.” What made Shannon so unique? He was extremely curious about information and wanted to know about all aspects of it. He brought a lot of insights into a subject that seemingly would come from left field. Shannon was also brilliant at transmitting information and breaking the complex into the simplistic. He allowed himself to move into different fields and go wherever his mind wanted to take him but never wasting his time on an unworthy subject. He could expertly sort through what was worth working on and what was a waste of time. How do we talk about information? How are we going to quantify information? Where did Shannon live and how did he live? Jimmy and Rob not only dug through scholarly journals to find out how Shannon thought, they also talked to the Shannon family and got to learn who he was as a father, husband and friend. When people think of Shannon’s level of genius, most think he must have short comings in his social life. Shannon did not. His colleagues, family and friends new him as a guy that barbecued, went running, and did his unreal math projects. Another fascinating trait Shannon had was his ability to not let critics get to him. He was smart enough to know that when he did projects and knew he was right, he didn’t need to pay any attention to the critics. He had confidence that came from his kind of intellectualism. He worked on the information theory over the course of 10 years while working on other projects. By the time he had published it, he already new he was right and had moved onto his next endeavor before the critics could get to him. Jimmy, Rob and Michael end the podcast discussing how Jimmy and Rob came to write this book together and what their collaboration process was. In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Information theory Turning complex into simplicity Complexity is the enemy Bell Labs How to deal with freedom in the work space Short-term-ism in our economy Dealing with critics and competitors

Way outside our cities and towns are societies of disappearing and endangered indigenous people . Some of us may think that’s natural— it’s been happening forever. Others fight to protect those cultures and have very strong opinions about what’s right and what’s wrong for those people. One of those opinions is whether there’s a “right way” to depict people who are different than us— who are not living in urbanized or Western societies. I was surprised by just how controversial this subject really was. I guess it’s ok that we’re surrounded by spectacular images that romanticize cars, sports, and marriage. Really anything commercial— but to apply a similar heroic lens to people who are different than us, well, that could be sacrilege. It seems there are people out there who believe that the only way to photograph those folks needs to be as an anthropological documentarian— capturing people only how they’re actually living vs in their Sunday best— proud, celebrated, glamorized. I mean, isn’t that what we do when we take pictures of ourselves? We're not posting pictures of ourselves hanging in sweatpants and stuffing our face with Fritos. It’s ok that we’re beautiful but god forbid that we make that commentary about those poor, exotic people living on the edge of the world. There are no edges to this world. There are people who live far away from our dense, standardized populations but our cultures are the edge from their point of view. This week it was my pleasure to talk to photographer Jimmy Nelson from his place in Amsterdam on his way out to another remote destination. Jimmy has been a photographer for over 30 years and his book “Before they Pass Away,” showcases 35 disappearing tribal cultural around the world. He captures them with stunning images. They’re truly incredible portraits of vanishing people. Be sure to visit growbigalways.com to check out a portfolio of his images as well as a video that will give you an up close look at what it’s like traveling and capturing remote and spectacularly loving societies. As Jimmy puts it, photographing these people are as much about discovering them as it is about discovering himself and how he belongs in the world. Really isn’t that what we’re all trying to do? We’re all on that same journey. I hope you enjoy listening to Jimmy’s and it inspires you to engage in his important work, which I guarantee will have a huge impact on you.

This week Jimmy Eudy concludes “I Quit” by giving an invitation for us to quit complaining. As Jimmy explored God’s Word, we’ll see that complaining is devastating to our relationship with God and keeps us from embracing and enjoying our life as God has given it to us.
The system went down and we lost 30 minutes of the podcast so Jimmy and Jon were good enough sports to hang, re-record and then some. We discuss how to deal with hecklers, the worst kind of hecklers, and some bad heckle stories...Including a near fight Sam got into. We discuss, what do we consider success in comedy? Also, we talk some rough casino gigs. As Jimmy puts it, “every once in a while a comic and crowd get together that shouldn’t.” We also talk about why it’s so hard to portray comics on TV. Ideal for any fitness level, the workout includes a highly efficient 33-minute workout that combines cardio, strength and core moves for total body results in a limited amount of time, requiring no extra equipment. The program works because it demands progression and challenges you to give your best effort. The key is to do more today than you did yesterday. As Jimmy says, “Yesterday’s best is today’s quest.” To encourage you to stay the course, Jimmy includes faith-based motivation throughout the workout and created weekly “PrayFit Minute” devotionals to inspire you to improve your life by honoring the one who made you. We also talk about his book Prayfit: Your Guide to A Healthy Body and A Stronger Faith in 28 Days which churches are now using in combination with the DVD to create study groups, and bring the talk of taking care of the gift that is your body back into the church. We answer questions such as "If I'm doing both, should I do cardio or strength training first?"
