Benjamin Gibbard may follow you in the dark, but he will not follow you in the trendy brunch spot in your neighborhood. On this episode on HOW DID WE GET WEIRD?, we catch up with the frontman for Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service to discuss 20 years of random Bayer hangouts ranging from breakfast to Bonnarroo, what being vegan was like during DCFC's early years and why he is unlikely to become the spokesman for Dunkin' Donuts anytime soon. We also discuss taping songs off the radio as a teenager, the enduring influence of Minor Threat and why "ordering something for the table" is the best way to get something indulgent without a side order of guilt.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Show On The Road with Z. Lupetin

This week on the show, to help honor Black History Month, we bring you a conversation with members of the foundational gospel group The Blind Boys Of Alabama - including longtime singer Ricky McKinnie, and beloved senior member Jimmy Carter who has been with the group for four decades. Formed in the late 1930s with talent discovered at the Alabama Institute Of The Negro Blind, the troupe has superseded its limitations by bringing its own high-spirited version of jubilee gospel throughout the world. Their music was often the backdrop to the civil rights movement as Martin Luther King JR. toured the south, and Jimmy and Ricky are amazed and grateful that their message was still ringing true during the Black Lives Matter protest movement of the tumultuous last year. While the members of the band have changed through history, the group has stayed steadfast to preserving a kinetic church-based music that doesn't seek to evangelize, but can bring people of all faiths together. Indeed, watching Jimmy and the other bespectacled members walk with hands on each other's shoulders into the youthful crowds of adoring festival goers from Bonnarroo to Jazzfest is really something to behold. Their body of work continues to grow. In the last few decades they've gamely collaborated with a wide range of secular artists from Peter Gabriel to Ben Harper to Bonnie Raitt, made an album with Bon Iver (the stellar 2013 release I'll Find A Way) and shrewdly reworked the ominous Tom Waits classic “Way Down In The Hole” which became the theme for HBO's The Wire. Their newest full length Almost Home, a treatise on morality and mortality, is particularly moving. It features songs written by Marc Cohn, Valerie June, The North Mississippi All Stars and many others - and was the last record that longtime member and bandleader Clarance Fountain was a part of before he passed away. Fountain was part of the group for for nearly sixty years. As Jimmy playfully mentions throughout the conversation, they've never let being blind stand in the way of doing what they do best: putting on a show. They're entertainers at heart and it's so small feat that they've brought a nearly lost form of swinging, soulful (and expertly arranged) gospel from the small southern towns where they grew up, all the way to the White House, where they've held court for three different presidents. They've won five Grammy Awards along the way. Stick around to the end hear their rich cover of Bob Dylan's “I Shall Be Released”.

On this weeks episode we have on John Petrocelli CEO of Bulldog. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst as a Business Administrations major, John landed a job working for Prince. There, he helped the pop legend launch the first artist-owned digital music store as well as a direct-to-fan ticketing platform. While on tour, John would watch Prince do a 2 to 3 hour show, then host a post-show where he would perform for another 3 to 4 hours. John wanted some way to share these incredible experiences with his friends, which led him to his live streaming pursuits. He went on to work for Incited Media which was bought out by AEG. John became the head of AEG’s live streaming department and struck up a working relationship with YouTube to deliver live streams for big music events like Bonnarroo and Coachella. With years of industry experience under his belt, John started his own live streaming company called Bulldog DM. Since then, Bulldog's has become one of the world’s most prolific and experienced streaming companies, providing streaming services to major brands, artists, and sports leagues. The Jam Band community owes a debt of gratitude to Blues Traveler, who in many ways pioneered the neo Jam Band scene back in the late 80s and early 90s. In fact, they supported the post Garcia Jam Band scene by putting on the HORDE festival, which is the pre-cursor to Lockn' or even Bonnarroo for that matter. I've always been a fan of the band and fondly remember listening to them lots and going to see them. But it's been a while since I had, but they came through Toronto recently, after a long hiatus and wanted to catch up. Chan Kinchla, the founding guitarist made some time, which was a thrill for sure. Our conversation started when I reminded Chan of his Canadian heritage, since he was born in Hamilton, a stone's throw from Toronto. What’s Good, Wise and Wonderful about Samantha Stollenwerck Runkel? Just about everything. Born and raised in Southern California, now residing in Nuremburg, Germany, she’s a stunning beauty with a vibrant and International intellect. Funny, self deprecating and wildly talented. She’s your cool friend that you tell stories about. The one who somehow fits more into one day than there seem to be hours, and makes you feel like you should expand beyond your own views and walls. She’s a recording artist and song writer, and has toured extensively with bands like Dave Matthews and Ziggy Marley. She’s played Bonnarroo and Austin City Limits. She’s traveled the world with her husband Michael Runkel, who is a travel photographer and has been to all 193 U.N. Nations and photographed almost every UNESCO World Heritage Site. An accomplishment given to only a handful of people in history. Their love story is something out of a novel. They met on an Expedition ship in the middle of Antarctica, and then decided to keep traveling together after that. She tells us all about it on the latest Good, Wise and Wonderful podcast which can be found here. Not only did they travel the world together, they eventually traveled the world with their 8 month old daughter Sia to countries like Namibia, Japan, New Zealand and the South Pacific. She’s involved philanthropically with Surfrider, Patagonia, Every Mother Counts, and Musicians Without Borders which brings music into conflict zones to help heal the effects of war. I met her on an extraordinary volunteer adventure in Nicaragua with the organization called SYRV, which was a pivot point in both of our lives. It was such a BIG emotional experience curated by Monique Evans. We built a community center in Jiquillio so the women would have a place to allow their trades to make them income, and provided water filters to schools and homes. A shared experience that would leave us life long friends. Her blog, is some of my favorite reading. She tells the stories of her travels across the world from the Vanuatu land divers, to the maternal wisdom of he Himba women. You can read all about her adventures, hear her music, and stay on top of her latest family travels at www.samanthamusic.com

#3: Rich Goodstone | Why 'Mindset' is Bonnaroo's Special Sauce

Deconstructing Success with Chris Winfield

4 friends dreamed of attracting 30,000 attendees to their new music festival (which would have been an incredible success for them.) When they put tickets on sale for the first “Bonnarroo” festival they CRUSHED their own lofty expectations and sold 70,000 tickets in a few short weeks...with no advertising! Today, Bonnaroo is annual festival experience unlike any other, uniting 100,000 people in a community defined by immersive participation, boundless positivity, and pure self-expression. In this episode of Deconstructing Success, you'll discover the “special sauce” behind the success of Bonaroo and my guest Rich Goodstone (hint: it’s all about your "frame of mind.”) Dreaming big, working hard and believing that he will succeed is the framework behind everything that today’s guest has built. I was first introduced to Rich Goodstone by one of my best friends and I was instantly drawn into his obvious hunger for learning and becoming a better person. I liked him right away. And since that time, he has been someone that I’ve constantly turned to when I needed a reminder about the importance of doing the “next right thing”. Or a reminder about the importance of staying humble...staying true to yourself, to your ideals...and always improving. We’ll cover all of that (and so much more) in this exclusive interview with Rich Goodstone in Episode #3! 5 Things You'll Learn in This Episode: How Rich reacted when 70,000 tickets for Bonnaroo’s first festival sold out in a few weeks. Why he believes that the more digital the world gets, the more people crave physical interaction...and what that means for businesses. The habits and mindsets that keep Rich balanced each day...through the good stuff (like when a multi-billion dollar company buys a majority stake in one of your festivals)...and also the challenging times (when a new launch doesn’t meet your expectations). The traits that the most successful people he’s ever met (celebrities, world leaders and entrepreneurs) all have in common. His recipe for success is simple--but not necessarily easy. And a great piece of wisdom from Henry Ford gets revisited. 5 Questions I Ask Rich: How do you define success? And has your definition evolved over the years? How does your life change when you achieve your "stretch" goals? What are the questions you need to be asking yourself in the first place to get to where you want to go to? How do you "get through" the down times in life and still stick to what you believe...and what you want? What was the last major disappointment you experienced? What did you learn from it? 5 Fast Facts About Rich Goodstone: Rich oversees Superfly’s award-winning agency services and he’s responsible for developing and overseeing revenue sources for Superfly’s landmark festivals. He’s a frequent speaker at some of the most prestigious conferences in the world including the “invite only” PTTOW summit alongside people like Quincy Jones, Shaun White, David Blaine, and even the Dalai Lama. In 2004, Rolling Stone named Bonarroo as "One of the Fifty Moments to Change the History of Rock n Roll". Among the wide range of artists who have graced the Bonnaroo stages are Radiohead, Kanye West, Elton John, the Beastie Boys, Paul McCartney, Kendrick Lamar, Bruce Springsteen, and countless other legends. In 2015, Live Nation announced it had acquired a controlling interest in Bonnaroo and "The Farm," its 750-acre site, for an undisclosed figure. Thank you SO much for listening to this episode of the Deconstructing Success show. Two quick things before you go..
