Slowly but surely, electric vehicles (EVs) will become a fixture in modern-day life. But as the market continues to grow, there are new challenges for companies, customers, and insurers to consider. EVs use parts and technology that present unique risks for mechanics, the supply chain, and the claims industry alike. It's critical to understand all the ways in which handling claims could be impacted or changed. In this podcast, we're joined by Barry Porter, claims quality team lead, and Jarred Eckman, quality assurance specialist, who weighs in on the history of electric vehicles, property loss considerations, and more.

Stephanie Collins writes in the Miramichi Reader about Barry's book: "Adventures of A Lightkeeper by Barry Porter is, quite simply, a romantic recounting of the maritime lifestyle of light keeping on the rugged northeast coastline of Newfoundland. Written with passion and great respect for the solitary life such a profession brings, Porter's book opens the door to these beautiful beacons of light and provides an exclusive tour of these lonely behemoths and the mystique for which they have become famous." Barry Porter This is the second part in a three-part interview with Barry Porter, whose new book Adventures of a Lightkeeper tells the story of his 23 years (1983 to 2006) with the Canadian Coast Guard as a lighthouse keeper on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Barry started his years as a full-time principal keeper in 1984 at Long Point Light Station on North Twillingate Island. Long Point, with its distinctive red lighthouse tower, is one of the 23 light stations in Newfoundland that are still staffed by resident keepers. It's also a major tourist attraction. Painting the lighthouse tower at Bacalhao Island Barry's next stop in 1988 was Bacalhao Island Light Station, which takes its name from the Portuguese word for cod. Barry spent four years at Bacalhao Island and then moved on to Surgeon's Cove Head on Exploits Island. Barry ended up staying at Surgeon's Cove for 10 years, until it was automated in 2002. In 2003 Barry spent a brief period at Puffin Island Lighthouse, off Greenspond on the northwest side of Bonavista Bay. Then from 2003 to 2006, Barry was back at Long Point. Before lighthouses were automated n Newfoundland and Labrador, keepers had to be stationed there to make sure everything went smoothly. They lived at their job in isolation, with frequent run-ins with wildlife, icebergs and stormy weather. Few lightkeepers were as experienced as Barry Porter, who recently published his memoir, Adventures of a Lightkeeper.

My guest today is Geoff Daking who grew up playing in local bands before attending American University which he ultimately left to join the NY based Mercury artist Blues Magoos to play the drums in 1966 (I was born in 1967). Between ‘66 and '69, they recorded four albums, two of which were platinum, and a top-five single, “We Ain't Got Nothin' Yet”. The peak of their career was in 1967 when they toured four months with Herman's Hermits and The Who (the Hermits were the headliners). During that time he became fascinated with recording and engineered some of the Magoos last albums. In the summer of 1969, Geoff went back to Woodstock where he played in bands with Tim Harden, Dave Sanborn, Paul Butterfield and Buzzy Feiton. In 1970, Geoff became a staff engineer at Sound Ideas in NYC, then SoundMixers NYC, and later as an independent engineer. And In 1982. he opened his own studio, Nimbus Nine, which grew to four rooms, one API, one Neve, one Trident, and one ProTools. Since 1970, Geoff has designed and built more than 20 recording studios for music, film and commercial production. including the all analog “BIG Blue” in Katonah NY for the recording of Joan Osborne's premier album, “Relish” and Tuxedo Park for Cyndi Lauper's “Sisters of Avalon”. His most recent studio is the multi-million dollar music production facility in Saint Petersburg Florida, Big3 Entertainment. In 1993 Geoff started manufacturing his own line of audio equipment. The first product was a combination mic-pre/eq. This all-discrete Class “A” unit was based on the legendary Trident A Range circuits by Barry Porter. Next was the FET Compressor. In 2000, production began for full-size Class A recording consoles in frame sizes from 16 to 80 inputs. Thanks so much to William Wittman for making our introduction! In times of crisis & anxiety - - to reach out and give love - is one of the best ways to reduce anxiety and receive love in return. Barry Porter, CEO American Red Cross (ARC), Eastern Region of North Carolina presents the present status and needs for blood, professional volunteers and 0+ and 0- blood. Mr. Porter states that although this essential organization (that has served Americans in every type of crisis since 1881) is there along side first responders and federal officials, this agency continues to require donations to sustain its ability to help. He stated that the ARC needs public help, donations and support now more than ever. Mr. Porter detailed the present response the American Red Cross in present crisis situations such as home fires and health assistance, counseling... The ARC is on the ground and doing everything they normally do, despite its monetary shortfalls during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Donations from the public are greatly appreciated and will go to help all those who are in desperate need. Dr. Ernie Mills, CEO & Founder of The Durham Rescue Mission (DRM) & Homeless Shelter presented that his buildings are currently providing 24 hour shelter to the homeless yet remain 100% COVID-19 Negative! Tests are performed on every individual showing symptoms. All have been negative. This organization is run without ANY state or federal funding and relies on the donations of money, assistance, food and goods to its stores. The DRM stores have been closed during this pandemic, and their shelters have not received food donations. Their budgets have been stretched to their farthest limit, but they remain open, providing drug recovery treatment, care, food, and social services, counseling and educational time (resume & life skills) still. Dr. Mills emphasized the need for food and monetary donations, as well as regular donations for their stores, as they work to strategically prepare for a clean, safe and healthy atmospheres in their stores and invite all in the future. His tireless and diligent work to serve the homeless population and those at the greatest need in these and many other communities continues. He further is working to continue to assist other communities in the program he pioneered for homelessness recovery.
