When Tom Swearingen wrote his first poem to remember a friend who had died, he didn’t consider himself a poet. But the small group of friends and family he read it to told him to keep writing. He did, and he says because he long enjoyed Western music, art and literature, including the cowboy poetry of Baxter Black, that was the style that fit. Within 10 years, Swearingen had published a collection of poetry which was named the 2020 Cowboy Poetry Book of the year by the International Western Music Association. The group also named him best male poet in 2019 and 2022. He also got Willamette Week’s nod in its “Best of” edition this year. Swearingen, like other cowboy poets, is particularly busy in the summer months with performances at rodeos and other events. We listen back to a conversation about his work and read some of his poetry.

Welcome to Season 4 and we're kicking things off with some poetry from the pasture! In this episode, I chose to share six of Baxter Black's poems to remember him and celebrate what would've been his 78th birthday. He was a fine human, a clever writer with a gift for capturing humor in nearly every situation, and we lost him far too soon. Hope y'all enjoy these selections and that they add a laugh or two in your day.

Baxter Black, who I have been a fan of for at least three decades has passed. In 2015 Baxter generously agreed to be a guest on the Off-Farm Income Podcast when we had barely began and had no catalog and no reputation. He provided me with a great, long-form interview as well. The world learned that Baxter was ill and on hospice care back in January of 2022, and in February of 2022 we replayed his interview as tribute. We are doing it again today as we have lost one of good ones. The original show notes are below. KEY IDEAS: ADVICE FROM BAXTER BLACK: WORK FOR FREE: Baxter's advice is to 1,000 shows for free before you figure out what you are worth. HAVE SOMETHING TO WRITE ABOUT: Baxter related a great story about a young man that walked 15 miles to meet him because he wanted to become a cowboy poet. But the boy was not a cowboy, so he did not know anything to write about. Baxter sent him off to get ranch working experience, to learn his subject matter and THEN to start writing. BAXTER BLACK'S PERSONAL HABIT THAT IS CONTRIBUTING TO HIS SUCCESS: YOU NEED TO FORM A HABIT: Once Baxter started writing a column, he started a habit of writing everyday. Now on every plane ride, or nightly before bed, he writes. This is how he has produced so much content. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE THAT BAXTER BLACK HAS RECEIVED: GET YOUR MESSAGE OUT: Baxter told me that it was not until he was addressing a group of ranchers in Colorado that one of the took him aside and suggested that he write a column. The message that Baxter received was that he had a message to get out, and he needed to get it to a wider audience. You need to take that step, and find a way to get your message to the people who are looking for it. The Riders are searching for the last suspected habitat of the legendary Studebaker Golden Hawk in the Grand Crouton Mountain in Tumbleweed Valley. Meanwhile, Slocum has leased the grandest Crouton of them all and plans to build a huge rocket gun up its towering side. Later that same day, Miss Marm was rescued from the doofus Charlie by Baxter Black, earning him a thank you kiss. But it was at that moment Ranger Doug came into view on a nearby knoll and saw the smooch…

In Chuck Anderson's first interview with Baxter Black, the duo had a strong rapport. So, Chuck had to visit Baxter again. This time, it was in Baxter's home in Brighton, CO. The two men picked up right where they left off, which was basically when Chuck lost control over the interview and Baxter switched roles. Baxter welcomed Chuck to his home, apologizing for a "missing wall" that he removes every summer. Chuck was so comfortable in his environment, he forgot to introduce himself until the second minute of the interview. The men were very observational comedians throughout the interview, first noticing Baxter's wife roaming around. Baxter introduced her to the listening audience, giving them a detailed image of her appearance, almost like a commentator telling the physical stats of an athlete. Chuck was stunned how Brighton made no mention of Baxter on its welcome sign. Baxter, in his mind, was an underrated celebrity. Baxter said the original sign which did mention his name was
