Managing Cattle & Grass In A Drought It is that time of year that many producers are moving cattle to summer grazing. But drought is plaguing many and it continues to worsen. According to drought.gov, as of May 5th, 60.92% of the country is experiencing moderate to exceptional drought, largely concentrated in the Southeast, High Plains, and West. There are strategies for managing drought, or I should say how we manage grass and forage uptake in the cowherd to get through drought. Trevor Burian from Killdeer North Dakota joins us today. Trevor has been a student of grazing, plant management, regenerative ag, and cattle efficiency and profitability his entire life. Cattle Industry News Tyson's Multi-Million-Dollar Beef Settlement A federal judge granted preliminary approval to a proposed $47 million class action settlement between Tyson Foods and commercial and institutional indirect purchaser plaintiffs in the ongoing cattle and beef antitrust litigation. An order filed in the middle of last week approved preliminary certification of a settlement class covering entities in the United States that indirectly purchased certain raw beef products sold by defendants between Jan. 1, 2015, and May 6, 2026, for use in commercial food preparation. The settlement involves Tyson Foods Inc. and Tyson Fresh Meats Inc. Tyson did not oppose the motion for preliminary approval. The plaintiffs in the case include restaurants, catering companies and other foodservice operators alleging anticompetitive conduct in the fed cattle and beef markets. The approval comes on the heels of the DOJ's doubling down on an ongoing investigation into Tyson, JBS, National Beef and Cargill. The DOJ and USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins accused the “Big Four” of colluding to artificially raise beef prices. March beef exports were down 11% from a year ago, while export value fell 8%. Shipments increased year-over-year to Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Indonesia, while exports to South Korea and Taiwan were steady. However, exports to China remained minimal and shipments also trailed year-ago levels to Japan and the Middle East. Excluding China, March beef export volume increased 4% from a year ago while value climbed 8%. The moves by Mexico, the largest market for US pork exports, come a week after the discovery of pseudorabies in a small commercial pig operation in Iowa and a farm in Texas where the infected animals originated, and other trade partners appear to be responding as well. The confirmation of pseudorabies at a small swine facility in Iowa was the first commercial outbreak since 2004, when the US deemed the virus eradicated from the commercial swine industry. The virus can, however, still be found in some feral swine populations, and there is occasional spillover of infection to outdoor herds where contact with feral swine is possible. USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said initial traceback from the Iowa herd indicated that affected boars came from an outdoor facility in Texas. President Trump Delays Beef Imports Earlier in the week, President Donald Trump delayed the planned signing of executive orders to allow increased beef imports into the U.S. and to support renewal of the U.S. cattle herd in an effort to address high beef prices. Last October, Trump ordered a quadrupling of beef imports from Argentina, and a month later removed his 40% punitive tariff on Brazilian beef and coffee. The moves did little to reverse beef prices, which were up 12.1% year-over-year in April, according to the Labor Department's Consumer Price Index. Beef is more than 16% more expensive than when Trump returned to office in January 2025. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has projected that the country will import a record 5.8 billion pounds of beef this year, up about 6% from 2025 and 25% from 2024. Strong demand and optimism rang through the barn as a group of Black and Black white face steers weighing 584 brought $502.00. A group of Black white face steers weighing 612 came in at 5 bucks. That's over $3,000 per steer, wow. Not done yet, here are 100 head of black white face steers weighing 727 at $444.00. 131 head of black white face steers weighing 852 sold for $380.00. Same excitement for the heifer mates. 70 head of black and black white face heifers weighing 642 brought $416.50. 48 head of Charolais Red Angus cross heifers weighing 726 brought $369.50. Cattle Industry News Florida Restricts Animal Imports From Texas A dangerous livestock pest that hasn't been seen in the United States for years is raising new concerns—this time along the southern border. The New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on the living flesh of animals, most often cattle. While infections in humans are rare, they can be serious—and in extreme cases, even fatal. Right now, there are no confirmed cases in the U.S. But Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller says a case has been detected just across the border about 60 miles south of Texas. That proximity is enough to trigger action more than a thousand miles away. Florida officials are now tightening restrictions on livestock coming from six counties in South Texas: Zapata, Jim Hogg, Starr, Hidalgo, Webb, and Brooks counties. Any animals brought in from those areas must undergo additional veterinary inspections and, if needed, treatment before entering the state. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson says the state is taking no chances. He warned that if the screwworm takes hold, it could have serious economic and animal health consequences. He's also urging ranchers, veterinarians, and animal health workers to stay alert and report anything unusual right away. Here's how the pest works: adult flies lay eggs in open wounds or natural openings on an animal's body. When those eggs hatch, the larvae—commonly known as maggots—burrow into the tissue and begin feeding. According to the CDC, the infestation can worsen quickly if not treated. Texas officials say Florida's response makes sense. The state dealt with a screwworm outbreak in the past, and the memory of that damage still lingers. Meanwhile, as a precaution, the U.S. has shut down livestock trade through ports of entry along the southern border. There are also long-term plans in motion to stop the pest before it spreads. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is building a sterile fly production facility at Moore Air Base in Edinburg, Texas. The idea is to release sterilized male flies into the wild. Since female screwworms mate only once, this strategy helps prevent reproduction and gradually reduces the population. That facility is expected to be up and running by November of 2027. For now, officials say vigilance is key. Even without confirmed cases in the U.S., the threat is close enough to be taken seriously. REFERENCE: https://www.ktep.org/2026-04-27/florida-is-restricting-animal-imports-from-texas-amid-screwworm-threat FAIR Labels Act Ensures Transparent Alt Protein Labeling Representatives from Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Idaho and Wisconsin, reintroduced the Fair and Accurate Ingredient Representation on Labels (FAIR Labels) Act in the House to add transparency in food labeling for alternative protein products. The legislation will provide consumers with clear and accurate information about plant-based and cell-cultivated protein products when making purchasing decisions. Sens. Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.) and John Fetterman (D-Pa.) sponsored the Senate version of the bill. The FAIR Labels Act: Defines "cell-cultivated" and "plant-based alternative" protein products to help consumers easily identify these products. Provides a clear definition of cell-cultivated protein products to ensure labels accurately reflect lab-grown food sources. Requires product labels to use terms like "cell cultivated" or "plant based" and to bear a clear disclaimer if the product does not contain meat or poultry or was not derived from a live animal. Directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to oversee the labeling of these products, working alongside the Food & Drug Administration to maintain product inspection standards. Confirms the shared jurisdiction of FDA and USDA in overseeing cell-cultivated protein products, and requires the secretaries of agriculture and health and human services to jointly revise their 2019 current memorandum of understanding. NCBA President and Virginia cattle producer Gene Copenhaver said that currently, there is no federal statute for labeling cell-cultivated protein products in the marketplace. For far too long, lab-grown protein companies have exploited the use of terms like ‘meat' and ‘beef' to describe their products, creating the potential for consumer confusion through misleading marketing. He went on to say that “The FAIR Labels Act will establish a federal guideline for labeling cell-cultivated and plant-based alternative protein products, ensuring consumers can easily differentiate these products from real beef products produced by U.S. cattlemen and cattlewomen.” REFERENCE: https://www.feedstuffs.com/policy/fair-labels-act-ensures-transparent-alt-protein-labeling Pseudorabies In Iowa & Texas For the first time since being eradicated in the U.S. Commercial swine herds in 2004, pseudorabies (PRV) have been confirmed in herds in Iowa and Texas (Shike, 2026). A small commercial swine facility in Iowa was confirmed to have positive cases of PRV by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and the National Veterinary Services Laboratories during routine testing. Officials at APHIS, in collaboration with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Texas Animal Health Commission, revealed that five affected boars in the Iowa facility originated from an outdoor production site in Texas (Shike, 2026). It is believed that the initial infection on the outdoor production site in Texas may have been a result of unintentional contact with feral swine. Pseudorabies virus was eradicated from the U.S. commercial swine herd in 2004. Early Signals Of Herd Rebuilding Emerge USDA Economist Justin Benavidez says the cattle cycle remains a reliable guidepost, even as producers debate what's really happening on the ground. “The cattle profitability is all based on the cycle… looking back over over 100 years, the U.S. cattle cycle is a very well-documented phenomenon.” He said that while opinions vary widely, he points to gradual trends in the data as the clearest indicator. “What the data is telling us in that pattern over time, is that we're seeing the earliest indicators of a herd rebuild… a slight retention in heifer uptick year over year.” Even so, he acknowledges uncertainty remains. He said he hears how people are very passionate on both sides of whether we're not retaining heifers, or we are retaining heifers, and USDA data, he says… is not telling the full story.” Even so, he continued that year-over-year trends still offer the best directional signal for where the industry is headed. Cattle Industry News Cattle Herd Rebuilding & Drought These are the best of times for cow-calf producers, at least on paper. The CME feeder cattle index, which tracks the price of feeder cattle at various auctions, is currently 28% higher than a year ago. Even when adjusting for inflation, current feeder cattle prices are almost 20% higher than the previous cyclical peak in 2014. However, the dramatic increase in cow-calf returns has not caused producers to retain more heifers for cow herd replacement. The sharp jump in returns in 2014 resulted in a 7% increase in beef cow replacement heifers to start the new year. Last year may have been the best on record for producer returns, but replacement heifers increased just 0.4%, with the beef cow replacements up less than 1%. The Livestock Market Information Center or LMIC expects cow-calf producer returns to be even better in 2026 and 2027. The surge in futures has caused LMIC to raise calculated returns for 2026 by 32% vs. October, while returns for 2027 are now 54% higher than estimated six months ago, at nearly $1,100/cow. There is certainly interest on the part of producers to invest in their operations, but there are several critical hurdles. The main one is drought. We do not yet have a full reading of pasture conditions, but expectations are that conditions are far worse than last year. According to USDA, about 45% of US cattle are now in areas experiencing severe or more intense drought. Producers with hay stocks are working through them as they wait for spring weather to green up pastures, but that is not guaranteed. Producers may have the best intentions to breed more heifers, but if feed is not there, they may opt to replace older cows rather than expand the herd. The other challenge is uncertainty about beef demand, not today or tomorrow, but in 2027, 2028, and beyond. The economy is on solid footing, and combined with a growing consumer appetite for protein, this has helped push beef demand to the highest point in 30+ years. Consumers are fickle and tastes change. After many years of battling drought, packers, and changing consumer diets, for some producers this is a golden opportunity to cash out. The complexity of the regulatory package has fuelled misunderstanding across the industry, and opposition has been vocal — including a petition launched Jan. 8 that has drawn nearly 30,000 signatures. Traceability efforts began before the 2003 BSE crisis, as the disease spread across Europe and Canada prepared for its arrival. The system was built to identify where infected animals came from and where they went, so the Canadian market could reopen as quickly as possible. Rick Wright of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada said without industry being at the table from day one, we may have been slapped with something that's closer to what Europe is than what we've got today. Producers have raised concerns about several elements of the proposed changes: the requirement to use premises identification numbers to purchase identification tags, the seven-day movement reporting window and the expanded role of the Canadian Livestock Tracking system. — particularly for those without reliable internet access. Other concerns include government overreach, the administrative burden on producers who move and sell cattle frequently, and what many see as insufficient communication from both the CFIA and producer organizations. Some producers have said publicly they do not intend to comply. Much of the region has been identified as underserved through the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program, which designates areas lacking sufficient veterinary coverage and offers incentives to attract practitioners. These designations underscore a widespread challenge in maintaining adequate care for livestock-heavy states. In these states, livestock operations are often spread across large geographic areas, meaning veterinarians cover extensive territories. Even a small decline in available practitioners can have significant impacts, leading to longer response times, increased travel distances and limited availability during critical periods. For producers, access to timely veterinary care is essential for herd health, productivity and regulatory compliance, especially during high-demand seasons such as calving. Federal and state programs across the Northern Plains show a growing recognition of the issue, but also highlight the scale of the challenge. Incentive-based programs in states like Nebraska aim to recruit veterinarians into rural practice, while proposed federal legislation seeks to strengthen those efforts. Wyoming's investments, meanwhile, support the broader animal health systems that depend on veterinary capacity. Even with these efforts, the shortage of large animal veterinarians remains a long-term concern. Sustained focus on education, recruitment and retention will be critical to ensuring livestock producers across Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado have access to the veterinary care they depend on. He went viral recently in a video promoting McDonald's newly introduced Big Arch, drawing social media ridicule for taking a dainty bite. Bosses from competing chains made videos chowing down on their own sandwiches, but the hoopla ultimately dramatically raised awareness of the new burger. Kempczinski said in a recent video interview with the Wall Street Journal that there's a group of consumers out there who want a really big burger that's a half pound of beef in the Big Arch. He went on to say as you look at what consumers were buying, and perhaps other places; fast casual restaurants or or even fine dining or full dining, there's a desire to have sort of an elevated burger experience. And I think what we've done with the Big Arch, the bun, sauces that we have with it, the crispy onions, all those things. That was for us, a way to offer that more elevated burger experience.” Kempczinski said there's been quite a bit of cost inflation, both on the input side, so food and packaging, those costs are up pretty significantly,” Burgers and beef … has probably been one of the most hard-hit areas, and then you also had quite a bit of labor inflation that's happened.” McDonald's has been steadily adding chicken items to its menu for years, in part to manage input costs. April Was A Record Setting Month For Feeder Cattle Sales April wrapped up the month with tremendous action for many weight classes. 7 weight steers in particular surged in the month of April posting the second highest weighted average in US history at $399.87 - just shy of the $404.68 mark set earlier in the month. The all time top ten 7 weight steer weighted averages continue to be dominated by recent trade. April alone accounted for 7 of those top averages, with February holding the other three. That kind of concentration shows how quickly this market has accelerated through the spring, with multiple sessions pushing into record territory in only a matter of weeks. Atkinson Livestock Market (Atkinson, NE) hosted a Special Feeder Calf Auction on Tuesday, April 28th that delivered exceptional results, setting 17 steer records and establishing new all-time highs across multiple weight classes. A group of 40 head averaging 335 lbs brought $702.50, marking a new barn record for 3 weights and the first 10-head-plus sale ever over $700. In the 4-weight category, 28 head at 408 lbs sold for $611.00, a new record and only the second sale over $600 in barn history. Six-weight steers also set new highs, with 600–602 lb cattle bringing $497.00 and $482.50. The momentum continued with 40 head of 716 lb steers at $453.00, a new barn record and the third highest 7-weight price in U.S. history. Heavier cattle followed suit, as 54 head of 904 lb steers sold for $364.50, the first 9-weight sale over $360 and a new barn record, while 1,015 lb steers reached $326.00, the third highest 10-weight price in barn history and the highest since October. It was a standout day in Atkinson, Nebraska. DOJ Proceeds With Packer Investigation After a relatively quiet start to 2026, attention has sharply returned to the U.S. meat industry as new details emerge about a federal investigation targeting the nation's largest processors. The probe gained traction following a Nov. 7 directive from President Donald Trump, with then–Attorney General Pam Bondi and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins quickly confirming the effort. Until recently, however, little had been disclosed about its status. A new report from the Wall Street Journal offers the first substantive glimpse into the investigation's progress this year. According to the report, the Department of Justice is investigating Tyson Foods, Cargill, JBS, and National Beef for potential criminal anticompetitive practices. At the center of the inquiry is how these companies purchase cattle from ranchers—an issue that has long drawn scrutiny from producers and policymakers alike. Rollins previously signaled this focus in a January interview, highlighting what she described as widespread concern among ranchers. Many, she said, have raised persistent alarms about consolidation in the meatpacking industry and its potential impact on pricing. That consolidation, in the view of the administration, may be contributing to market conditions that disadvantage independent producers. “It's something the president—and many in our administration—believe could be resulting in unfair pricing,” Rollins noted, emphasizing that the DOJ's review is intended to address those concerns. She also framed the issue more broadly, describing it as a matter of national security. Over the past two decades, increased foreign investment in U.S. agricultural production and processing has reshaped the industry. According to Rollins, the administration is taking a closer look to ensure those shifts serve the interests of American farmers, ranchers, and consumers. This is not the first federal investigation into the meatpacking sector. During Trump's first term, a similar probe was launched in June 2020, but it produced little public information. Reports later revealed that the Justice Department closed that investigation last fall—just weeks before the president called for renewed action—without filing any charges. Now, with fresh scrutiny and new details coming to light, the industry appears to be entering a more consequential phase of oversight. New World Screwworm Close To The United States Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller today is warning of a serious and immediate threat to the state's livestock industry. The northern-most detection of the New World screwworm has now been confirmed in Nuevo León, Mexico — just 90 miles from the U.S. border. Miller says this is no distant concern. MILLER: “The New World screwworm is a direct and imminent threat to Texas, and we are treating it that way. This is a high-stakes situation for our ranchers, our livestock industry, and our food supply.” While federal agencies have responded, Miller says the pest's spread has not yet been contained — and that raises concern. MILLER: “That's exactly why Texas must be proactive. We are fully engaged and prepared to use every available tool to stop this threat.” He's urging all Texas producers to act now. MILLER: “Be on high alert. Check your animals. Know the signs. If you see anything unusual, report it immediately. Early detection is the difference between containment and a full-blown crisis.” State leaders say they're coordinating with federal, state, and local partners — but more action is needed at the source. Strong Spring Run For Feeder Cattle Sales Feeder cattle sales continue their strong momentum in prices being commanded this past week. Easter Monday proved to be busy across much of cow country. Joplin, Missouri led the charge by running 7600 head across the scales with Sioux Falls, South Dakota at 2482 head, Kingdom City, Missouri at 1161 head, Gainesville, Missouri at just a tick over a thousand head and Paris, Kentucky at 943. Joplin, Missouri was noted as a snappy market by Corbit Wall with good demand across all classes, noting feeder steers were steady to $15 higher and lighter weights $15 to as much as $50 higher. He also pointed out that runs were unusually light, with far fewer load lots than normal, which limited what went into the index despite stronger trends. Online Tool For Helping Fire Affected Producers In Nebraska Kent Bacus of The National Cattlemen's Beef Association shares why cattle producers are encouraged by USDA's renewed push behind the voluntary Product of the USA label. For years, U.S. cattle producers have pushed to fix what they saw as a misleading labeling loophole—and now, that change is here. Kent Bacus says the updated USDA rule finally tightens the standards behind the “Product of USA” label. He explains the concern was simple: imported beef could still carry that label, creating confusion for consumers and an uneven playing field for American producers. Now, that loophole is closed. Under the updated rule, any product using the “Product of USA” label must come from animals that were born, raised, harvested, and processed right here in the United States. Bacus says that opens the door for real differentiation in the marketplace—and gives U.S. producers a clearer way to promote their product. Importantly, this is not a requirement—it's a choice. Companies can opt in to use the label, but only if they can verify and document that the product meets those full U.S.-origin standards. And while this isn't about food safety, Bacus says it is about building trust. He calls it a marketing tool—one that helps connect consumers to where their food comes from and adds integrity to the label. Cattle Industry News Nebraska Fire Relief After more than 800,000 acres have burned in Nebraska wildfires, livestock producers are now searching for places to graze their animals. The Nebraska Cattlemen's Association says there are two main options — both showing how neighbors are stepping up to help. One option is feeding cattle hay. Donations are arriving by the truckload, but hay can still be expensive. The second option is a free online tool called the Nebraska Grazing Exchange. It connects ranchers who need land with farmers who have pasture available. People who want to help can sign up, list what they can offer, and connect directly with ranchers in need. Once a match is made, the next step is moving the animals to that land. Laura Field, Executive Vice President of Nebraska Cattlemen, says support has been overwhelming. She says tough times like this bring out the best in the agriculture community. Field says some ranchers have lost up to 70 or 80 percent of their summer grazing land, and may need to move cattle to entirely different regions — even out of state. But she says help is coming from all directions — across the country. Field also says she doesn't expect long-term economic damage. She says Nebraska's beef industry is strong and resilient, and will weather this challenge. While moving cattle — also known as rotational grazing — isn't new, the situation right now is complicated. Field says burned areas are filled with damaged equipment like fencing, water systems, and other infrastructure. She says groups are working with state and federal partners to match needs with resources and get supplies where they're needed most. As for concerns about ranchers leaving the state, Field says the grass will grow back — and the cattle will return. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture adds that grazing can actually help prevent future wildfires by reducing dry plant material. Market fundamentals have shifted in recent weeks. Lower fed cattle prices combined with higher boxed beef values improved packer margins while pressuring feedlots. For the week ending March 14, packer margins were estimated at a loss of $54.17 per head, narrowing from deeper losses in prior weeks. The beef cutout rose to $390.66 per cwt. Feedlot margins turned negative, estimated at a loss of $48.79 per head. Elevated breakevens continue to pressure feedlots despite strong demand. Hamburger prices on restaurant menus are 14% higher in the last three years, but beef production costs jumped 32% since January 2023, according to a new report from food industry intelligence firm, Datassential. Burger inflation is roughly in line with broader restaurant prices, despite the effects of chronically tight beef supplies. Food away from home — which approximates all food service including dine-in, takeout and delivery — rose 4% in 2025 and is 13% higher since January 2023, according to the federal government's Consumer Price Index. The Datassential report pointed out that restaurant pricing strategy can keep prices on popular items in check to avoid hurting turnover, while causing cost burdens to be spread throughout the operation. In recent months, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer has floated legislation aimed at restructuring the industry, while President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Justice to investigate major beef packers for potential antitrust violations. The unusual bipartisan convergence reflects mounting political pressure to address food affordability, even as economists and industry leaders say the fundamental driver of high beef prices lies elsewhere. The renewed focus on meatpacker consolidation follows years of debate over the market dominance of the so-called “Big Four” beef packers (JBS, Tyson Foods, Cargill and National Beef), which together handle roughly 80% of U.S. cattle slaughter. Trump last fall directed the DOJ to investigate whether large packers engaged in “Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation,” while several Republican lawmakers voiced support for stronger antitrust enforcement. The case was brought by Upside Foods, a California company that produces lab-grown chicken, after the law took effect in July of 2024. A three-judge panel on the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the ban does not conflict with federal laws regulating traditional poultry. The court said the state law doesn't control how the product is made — only whether it can be sold — meaning federal law does not override it. The decision also upholds an earlier ruling from a federal district court that dismissed the case. Florida Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, who supported the law, called the ruling a win for farmers and consumers. Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed the bill, has also defended the measure, saying it protects Florida agriculture from what he calls “lab-grown alternatives.” Florida was the first state to pass a ban on cultivated meat. Since then, several others — including Alabama, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas — have followed. The bans come as the lab-grown meat industry is still in its early stages. Online Tool For Helping Fire Affected Producers In Nebraska Nebraska producers impacted by recent wildfires now have a new resource to help locate grazing land for their livestock. The Nebraska Grazing Exchange is an online tool designed to connect cattle producers in need of pasture with landowners who have available grazing. The platform allows users to post listings or search for opportunities across the state. Officials say the exchange is especially important following the fires, which have reduced available forage and displaced herds in several areas. Jim Pillen issued an emergency proclamation on March 13th in response to the fire, deploying the state National Guard to assist local fire crews. In an effort to help producers, the Nebraska Cattlemen Disaster Relief Fund activated the disaster relief account and is accepting monetary donations until further notice. The first walkout at a U.S. beef slaughterhouse in four decades follows accusations from union officials that the company retaliated against workers and committed other unfair labor practices. They said the company offered wage increases of less than 2% annually, which is below Colorado's inflation rate. Union officials said 99% of the plant's 3,800 unionized workers voted to strike. More than 2,600 showed up at the picket line by early Monday afternoon and others were expected to check in over coming days. The union said its workers perform some of the most difficult and dangerous jobs in the country and deserve higher wages and better health care. It said JBS in many cases has charged workers $1,100 or more to offset the company's expenses for personal protective equipment. The strike comes at a 75-year low in U.S. cattle numbers, with a Jan. 1 inventory of 86.2 million animals — down 1% from the prior year. The decline has been driven in part by drought and low prices offered to ranchers. Meanwhile, beef prices have soared to record levels. President Donald Trump's tariffs on Brazil, a major beef exporter, have also curbed imports. Pressed to act on “affordability” issues after Republican losses last November, Trump accused foreign-owned companies of driving up U.S. beef prices and asked the Department of Justice to investigate. The price for 100% ground chuck beef more than doubled over the past two decades from $2.55 to $6.07 per pound, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The increase has added to economic anxiety in the U.S. The Trump administration has promoted a trade deal with Argentina in efforts to lower prices for food, including beef. Beyond Meat Faces NASDAQ Delisting Beyond Meat, the once leading light of the plant-based protein business world, is in danger of being delisted from the NASDAQ stock exchange because its stock price has remained under $1.00 for more than 30 days. The company, which is in the process of removing the word “meat” from its brand moniker, received a letter of warning from NASDAQ on March 4. It has 180 calendar days — actually until August 31 — to remedy the situation or face delisting. Its closing bid price must remain at $1.00 or higher for 10 days in order to be in compliance. Beyond Meat went public in 2019 and at one point was valued at $14 billion. Missouri getting hit hard. The disease attacks the animal's red blood cells, causing severe anemia in cattle. Side effects that have been reported are jaundice, weakness and pale mucous membranes. While some producers across Northwest Missouri have not experienced this disease in their cattle, they are taking the necessary precautions to avoid the disease. Reports have said the disease has been found in 60 counties in Missouri. The rumors of a "yield-killer" feedlot virus with a climbing mortality rate in the Texas Panhandle began to spread in online publications and on social media over the weekend. One such report from agroinformacion.com said the news was drawing "immediate panic" from the beef industry, projecting a "brutal" hit to the market. Several agricultural sources in the state have since stepped in to ease the concerns, saying health officials have confirmed there is no such disease present in the state. The strike at JBS's plant in Greeley will start on March 16. The strike comes after the workers gave notice of cancellation of their contract due to alleged unfair labor practices. JBS was one of about 20 food companies that settled a 2024 federal lawsuit for over $200 million over employee wage fixing. JBS says it employs more than 270,000 people around the world — 3,800 of whom are based in Greeley, where JBS USA is headquartered — and pays $3.1 billion for livestock each year, making it the world's largest meat supplier. The New Civil Liberties Alliance or NCLA — which is representing ranchers, farmers, and livestock producers in the case — argues that the USDA and its Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service or APHIS unlawfully required electronically readable identification, or EID, ear tags for certain cattle and bison moving across state lines, replacing long-used visual tags. According to the NCLA's case summary, APHIS in 2013 allowed several forms of official identification for certain interstate cattle and bison movements, including both visual-only and electronically readable ear tags. But in May 2024, APHIS issued a final rule requiring that official ear tags sold for or applied to certain cattle and bison be readable both visually and electronically. The plaintiffs' March 5 summary judgment brief argues that the USDA did not adequately justify the change and that the rule imposes added costs on producers while failing to solve the agency's stated traceability concerns. In the filing, plaintiffs said the rule “mandates that America's ranchers and farmers use visually-readable electronic identification (“EID”) ear tags when moving certain cattle and bison interstate” and argued the rule “increases the cost of raising cattle by approximately $3 per head.” The NCLA said the USDA had previously agreed visual-only tags were effective in tracing disease in cattle and bison and had allowed producers to choose between visual-only and electronically readable options. The group now argues the 2024 rule abandoned that flexibility without sufficiently explaining the change. The organization also contends the current rule is internally inconsistent because it says EID ear tags are needed to reduce transcription errors tied to “human error,” while still allowing those same tags to be used visually in the same manner as traditional tags if producers do not use electronic readers. The USDA, however, says animal disease traceability is important for quickly identifying where diseased and at-risk animals are, where they have been, and when they were there. On its Animal Disease Traceability page, APHIS says traceability does not prevent disease but “reduces the number of animals and response time involved in a disease investigation,” which in turn reduces the economic impact on owners and affected communities. APHIS also says it provides electronic ID tags to cattle producers at no cost through state veterinarian offices. The case remains active in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Dakota. Mixed Reactions to Schumer Meatpacking Bill Late last week Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) introduced the “Family Grocery and Farmer Relief Act” that aims to deconsolidate the U.S. beef-packing industry, address foreign ownership of beef-packing facilities, and focus on eliminating unfair and unjustly discriminatory pricing practices in retail and wholesale meat markets. Schumer said the forthcoming food-price legislation would focus on consolidation in meat and agriculture, arguing that market concentration allows large companies to squeeze producers while raising prices for consumers. The proposal would also call for a review of foreign-owned meat companies operating in the U.S., potentially affecting firms such as JBS and Smithfield Foods. This announcement received mixed reactions from leading cattle industry groups. According to the Meat Institute, they say the proposal would require meat companies that process multiple species to divest operations and focus on only one species. They say the proposal is absurd and described the legislation as reckless election year pandering that threatens to damage a crucial industry at the center of every American Meal. The New World screw worm (NWS) is the larval stage of the fly Cochliomyia hominivorax. Unlike most fly maggots that feed on dead tissue, screw worm larvae feed on living tissue — making them especially dangerous to cattle and other livestock. The adult fly lays eggs in open wounds, including: Branding or castration sites Dehorning wounds Ear tag punctures Tick bites Navel cords of newborn calves Minor cuts or abrasions Once hatched, larvae burrow into flesh in a screw-like motion — hence the name “screw worm.” Why New World Screwworm Is A Major Threat To Cattle 1. Rapid Tissue Destruction Larvae feed aggressively on living tissue, enlarging wounds quickly. Untreated infestations can lead to: Severe tissue damage Secondary bacterial infections Reduced weight gain Decreased milk production Infertility in breeding stock Death in severe cases 2. High Economic Impact Historically, screw worm outbreaks have cost the livestock industry billions in: Treatment costs Production losses Increased labor Export restrictions Quarantine expenses The successful eradication program in the U.S. — led by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service — is considered one of the greatest livestock pest control achievements in history. Signs Of Screwworm Infestation In Cattle Early detection is critical. Producers should watch for: Foul-smelling wounds Bloody discharge Sudden irritation or head shaking Reduced feed intake Visible maggots in wounds Rapid wound enlargement Infested cattle often isolate themselves and show signs of distress. Napoleon Livestock Feeder Cattle Break Records Napoleon Livestock turned in a historic performance last week, rewriting the record books with 18 new barn records and an especially powerful showing in the 5-weight division. The highlight of the sale came in the 500-pound range. A draft of 54 head weighing 505 pounds sold for $567.50, followed by 29 head at 506 pounds for $560.00 and 18 head at 509 pounds for $557.50. Those sales now stand as the top three 5-weight prices in barn history. In total, five of the top ten all-time 5-weight prices were set in a single day. Momentum carried into the 4-weights, where 14 head at 472 pounds brought $580.00, helping place four new entries among the top ten 4-weight prices on record. The strength didn't stop there. In the 6-weights, 111 head at 619 pounds sold for $471.00 and 36 head at 621 pounds brought $470.00 — ranking among the top ten all-time, including the third- and fourth-highest 6-weight prices in barn history. Seven-weights also made headlines, as 25 head at 703 pounds sold for $420.00, marking the third-highest 7-weight price ever recorded at the barn. Heavier cattle followed suit. Steers weighing 807 to 820 pounds brought $375.00 to $376.00, earning the fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-highest 8-weight prices on record. In the 9-weights, 59 head at 928 pounds sold for $347.50, securing the sixth-highest price in barn history for that class. The sale will go down as one of the strongest in the history of the barn, with standout demand across nearly every weight category. China withdrew export registrations in early March 2025 from most U.S. meat facilities, after the Trump administration slapped a series of tariffs on Chinese goods. The licenses were reissued within days for poultry and pork facilities but have remained expired for nearly all beef processors and exporters. Compared to 2024, beef exports by volume were down 12% last year to less than 1.14 million metric tons. The global export decline was nearly 150,000 metric tons, while the loss of volume to China was about 120,000 metric tons. Amid record global beef prices for much of last year, U.S. exports of beef were down 11% by value to $9.33 billion dollars, equivalent to the drop in sales to mainland China. A truce announced at the end of October in the trade war called for China to drop non-tariff barriers to U.S. goods, but the beef export registration issue remains. The U.S. Supreme Court ruling invalidated President Donald Trump's claim of unlimited emergency tariff powers, removing what the White House claimed was important negotiating leverage. EPISODE 122 DETAILS Smaller Inventories Of Cattle On Feed According to Derrell Peel, Extension Livestock Marketing Specialist and Agricultural Economist with Oklahoma State University, the latest United States Department of Agriculture Cattle on Feed report placed feedlot inventories at 11.505 million head as of February 1. That total is 1.8 percent below year-ago levels and marks the fifteenth straight month of year-over-year declines. January placements fell 4.7 percent compared to last year, while marketings were down 13.0 percent, likely due in part to a winter storm late in the month that pushed some marketings into February. Overall, the report came in largely as expected and offered no significant surprises to the market. Peel also emphasized the structure of the cattle feeding sector. Of the nation's 26,082 feedlots, approximately 24,000 have capacities under 1,000 head. While these smaller operations make up 92 percent of all feedlots, they accounted for only 12.9 percent of total marketings in 2025, averaging fewer than 126 head sold per feedlot. Meanwhile, the 2,082 feedlots with capacities exceeding 1,000 head were responsible for 87.1 percent of the 23.483 million head marketed. Among them, just 7.1 percent — those with more than 32,000 head capacity — marketed 58.8 percent of fed cattle in 2025. In fact, the 82 largest feedlots, each with capacity above 50,000 head, marketed 8.39 million head combined, averaging more than 102,000 head per operation for the year. Season 6, EPISODE 277 Dry Creek Ranch: Passion For Red Angus Dry Creek Ranch in Amidon, North Dakota, is a family-run Red Angus cattle operation that focuses on raising registered and commercial cattle, selling breeding bulls, and offering ranch-raised beef directly to customers. The ranch is operated by the Robison family and emphasizes practical, efficient cattle genetics and long-term herd improvement, with activities that include private-treaty sales and ranch-direct beef marketing. It's part of the western North Dakota ranching tradition, combining working-ranch livestock production with a direct connection to consumers and other cattle producers in the region. Current State Of The Beef Business Beef prices are climbing faster than almost anything else in the consumer price index. The broad beef and veal category is up 15 percent over the past year, as of January. Uncooked ground beef has hit a new record high, after posting its biggest jump since June of 2020, according to new government data released last Friday. That stands out against the rest of the grocery aisle, where price pressures have eased. Chicken prices rose just over 1 percent in the past year, while milk prices have stayed mostly flat. At the wholesale level, the average value of choice beef in 2025 was up 16 percent from the previous year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Even major meatpackers like Tyson Foods are feeling the strain, with the company's beef division reporting quarterly losses since early 2024. The surge in beef prices has pushed the White House to respond. President Donald Trump has pledged to increase competition in beef processing and has expanded Argentine beef import quotas in an attempt to boost supply. But the situation is more complicated. The U.S. cattle herd has fallen to its smallest level since the early 1950's. Drought, higher production costs, and elevated interest rates have all made raising cattle more expensive. Don Close, a senior animal protein analyst at Terrain Ag, says the cattle industry is cyclical, but this downturn has lasted longer than expected. Right now, ranchers can make more money selling animals young for slaughter than keeping them to rebuild herds. And even if herd expansion started today, it wouldn't reach grocery store shelves until at least 2028 — meaning beef prices could stay high for years. Meanwhile, the U.S. has halted shipments of live cattle from Mexico following the return of the New World screwworm. Imports from South America may provide some relief, but those supplies are mostly used for ground beef and won't quickly solve the broader cattle shortage. Those indicted by a Fort Worth federal grand jury on February 11, 2026, were: Jed Wood of Fort Worth, Texas, charged with three counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering involving wiring more than $63,000 to a lender for “Home Payoff” Joshua Link of Strafford, Missouri, charged with ten counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and two counts of money laundering, including wiring more than $527,000 to purchase real property Tia Link of Smithton, Missouri, charged with three counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering, including wiring more than $527,000 to purchase real property Taylor Bang of Killdeer, North Dakota, charged with eight counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering Royana Thomas of Arlington, Texas, charged with six counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and one count of money laundering As alleged in the indictment, each of the defendants were associated with Agridime LLC, a business headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas that offered cattle sales and meat processing and retail services to the public. Jed Wood served as the Operations Director. Joshua Link served as the Executive Director. Tia Link served as the Marketing Director. Taylor Bang served as a cattle broker, and Royana Thomas served as the financial controller. The indictment alleges that, from January 2021 through December 2023, the five defendants, acting through Agridime, perpetrated a fraud scheme in which they falsely represented to individual cattle purchasers, cattle ranchers, and feedlots that Agridime would use their funds to purchase specific individual cattle from each victim, raise the cattle, and eventually sell the meat from the same specific individual cattle for a profit. In reality, as the indictment charges, the defendants did not use victim funds as promised and instead used newer cattle purchaser funds to pay Agridime operating expenses, pay funds owed by Agridime to earlier cattle purchasers, pay personal expenses, and purchase real property. EPISODE 121 DETAILS U.S. Ranchers Say No To Argentina Beef President Donald Trump's new beef trade deal with Argentina could increase imports by as much as 80,000 tons this year — a move that's raising red flags for some U.S. ranchers. The agreement takes effect today. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins is defending the decision, saying critics are missing the bigger picture. She argues the additional imports are focused on ground beef and are intended to help bring down prices at the grocery store — noting that ground beef is not the primary product most U.S. ranchers produce. But not everyone is on board. State agriculture leaders from North Dakota to Texas are pushing back. North Dakota Farmers Union President Matt Perdue says cattle producers in his state are disappointed. He argues the deal is unlikely to significantly lower consumer prices and warns it could put added pressure on domestic producers. Meanwhile, Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller is calling for a stronger “America First” approach, especially as the U.S. cattle herd sits at historic lows. Miller says the priority should be rebuilding America's cattle numbers and expanding domestic processing capacity to keep ranchers competitive. Industry Associations React To Beef Imported From Argentina President Trump issued a proclamation titled “Ensuring Affordable Beef for the American Consumer,” increasing the in-quota import of lean beef trimmings from Argentina by 80,000 metric tons in 2026 to help lower ground beef prices. U.S. Cattlemen's Association (USCA) President Justin Tupper said the group has been engaged with the Administration since expanded imports were first proposed in October 2025. While USCA supports efforts to stabilize supply, Tupper emphasized that a strong domestic cattle industry is essential and warned that trade agreements must not undermine U.S. producers or supply integrity. Tupper expressed concern over the scale and origin of the imports, noting Argentina faces tight cattle supplies similar to the U.S. He said the roughly 400% increase should be treated as a one-time exception, not a precedent, and urged stronger rules of origin and labeling so consumers know where their beef comes from. How Much Should Producers Spend On Breeding Bulls Jon DeClerck, the Executive Vice President of the American Simmental Association, went to social media tackling the issue of how much should producers pay for their next breeding bulls this year. According to his research, he claims breeding bull prices in relation to feeder cattle are undervalued. Here is what he said “A lot of folks are talking about record bull prices, and rightly so. The cattle market has pushed to historic highs in 2025, and it's good to see seedstock producers, who've been fueling genetic progress for commercial cattlemen, also being rewarded. That said, when you step back and look at the data, it tells an important story. Even though average bull prices are the highest we've ever seen, bulls are still undervalued relative to the current market landscape. Right now, the average bull still costs roughly 2.5 feeder calves, which is below long-term norms. In other words: Bull prices are high But bull value, relative to feeder calf prices, remains discounted Genetics remain one of the best long-term investments any producer can make. The calves have had Bovishield Gold One Shot and Ultra Bac 7 shots and the bull calves were banded. They sold for $6,500.00 a pair! Tyson Reaches Multi-Million-Dollar Deal With Direct Beef Buyers Tyson Foods has agreed to pay $82.5 million to resolve a proposed class-action lawsuit alleging the company conspired to inflate U.S. beef prices by intentionally restricting supply. The settlement was disclosed Wednesday in a filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, marking a significant development in ongoing litigation targeting major beef producers. The lawsuit was brought on behalf of grocery stores, food distributors, and other direct purchasers of beef products, who claimed Tyson Foods and other large meatpacking companies coordinated production cuts to drive up prices. According to the plaintiffs, the alleged conspiracy affected boxed beef and retail-ready beef cuts sold between 2015 and 2022, a period marked by rising beef prices across the supply chain. Attorneys representing the plaintiffs stated they are currently finalizing the settlement agreement and expect to submit it to the court for approval. Eight of the top 10 highest prices in Ozarks Regional history came from this weight class, led by 19 head averaging 521 pounds selling for $515.00 and 10 head at 516 pounds bringing $505.00—marking the first time 5-weight calves have ever surpassed the $500 mark at the barn. 4-weight steers were equally impressive, with top prices reaching $585.00 and $570.00, securing six of the top 10 all-time sales in that category. New World Screwworm Detected Mere Hours From U.S. Border The latest detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Mexico is the nearest case yet to the U.S. border. According to reports from Mexico's National Service of Agro-Alimentary Public Health, Safety, and Quality (confirmed by the Texas Department of Agriculture), NWS was identified on Dec. 27 in a six-day-old calf in Tamaulipas, a Mexican state that is 197 miles (about 3.5 hours) from the border. This is the northernmost detection of NWS. Since May 2025, U.S. imports of Mexican cattle have been halted, and USDA officials have met with their Mexican counterparts about eventually resuming trade. In December, Mexican government officials detailed their own efforts to contain NWS, which surpassed $65 million across various initiatives. But what about the ranchers? Here is our list for 2026: Thou shall finally return the borrowed farm equipment Thou shall keep better records, because apparently, a general sense of where the cows are doesn't count as inventory management. Thou shall reduce shouting by 50% while working cattle with the misses Thou shall check the air in the trailer tires before using it. Thou shall confirm hand signals before backing up to any implement or trailer with the misses Thou shall make sure all ear tags will be legible and if I can't make them legible, I will assign the task to someone that can write legible. Thou shall fill all fuel tanks on vehicles when they are down to ¼ tank. Thou shall not assume that everyone that helps sort cows knows exactly what I mean when I shout the black one when 253 of them are black. Thou shall take the batteries out of the hot shot before working cattle of any kind. Thou shall remember that everytime working with dogs, horses and animals of any kind at any time is a training opportunity and bad behavior is always rewarded with bad behavior. Thou shall realize that the neighbor is not out to “one up me on everything”. If they want to get that new truck, let them and be happy for them. Record Setting Land Prices In 2025 2025 was quite a year, depending on which side of the fence you were on per say. Records being set in the beef arena of course. Get this out. Did you hear of the record $32,000 per acre land sale that took place in early December in Iowa? Yeah, in Sioux County, near Orange City Iowa, 35.51 acres. Brownfield's Brent Barnett interviewed Jim Rothermich, the vice president of Iowa Appraisal on the sale and the details. Valentine Livestock Auction accounts for five of the top ten sales, underscoring its outsized role in setting record values in this weight class. Nebraska dominates the list overall, hosting eight of the ten highest-priced sales. Four sales reached or exceeded the $400.00 per hundredweight threshold, marking an unprecedented level for 8-weight steers. Pratt Livestock Auction stands as the only market from Kansas to appear among these records, while Hub City Livestock Auction is the sole representative from South Dakota, further highlighting the regional concentration of these historic prices. EPISODE 114 DETAILS Cultivated Meat Company Meatable Doesn't Meet Funding Challenge The global cultivated meat sector lost a major player this month with the closing of the Dutch-based cultivated meat start-up Meatable. Founded in 2018, the company used a specific strain of pluripotent stem cells as it sought to produce pork sausages and dumplings through a system that sped up the conversion of stem cells into fat and muscle. Meatable had aimed to become “a raw material supplier or vendor to a meat company. Meatable was unable to raise additional funding. Meatable's closure follows the recent demise of Believer Meats and a shift in growth prospects for similar companies like GOOD Meat and UPSIDE Foods. As of late 2025, Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, and Texas have passed laws banning or restricting the sale, manufacturing, and distribution of cultivated (cell-cultured) meat, with bans varying in scope and duration, though some are temporary and face legal challenges. Deb Fischer Reintroduces HAULS Act To Improve Agriculture Transportation Safety U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, has reintroduced the Haulers of Agriculture and Livestock Safety (HAULS) Act, legislation aimed at strengthening the transportation system that supports America's farmers, ranchers, and agricultural supply chains. The HAULS Act addresses longstanding challenges faced by agricultural and livestock haulers, particularly those related to federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations. By modernizing these rules, the bill seeks to improve safety, flexibility, and efficiency across the agriculture transportation industry. Key Provisions of the HAULS Act The legislation includes several critical updates designed to better reflect real-world agricultural operations: Expanded Hours-of-Service Exemptions The HAULS Act would eliminate the requirement that agricultural and livestock HOS exemptions apply only during state-designated planting and harvesting seasons, allowing haulers greater flexibility year-round. Clearer Definition of Agricultural Commodities The bill amends and clarifies the definition of “agricultural commodities” based on feedback from agriculture and livestock organizations, reducing confusion and improving regulatory consistency. Extended 150 Air-Mile HOS Exemption Building on a previous Fischer provision already signed into law, the HAULS Act authorizes a 150 air-mile exemption from HOS requirements on the destination side of a haul, giving agricultural commodity haulers more operational flexibility when delivering goods. Batman Saves Meat A group of meat thieves got an early-morning surprise in Philadelphia when a truck driver chased them off with a baseball bat. Kurt Landry told WPVI he was fast asleep outside Quaker Valley Foods when noise at two a.m. woke him up. He peeked out to find masked suspects unloading four pallets of meat. Landry grabbed a bat, and the thieves scattered. He was hauling a Tyson Foods delivery from Nebraska. The move came Saturday through an executive order. It directs both the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission to form separate task forces, each charged with taking “all necessary and appropriate actions” to look into the food supply chain. That includes examining whether foreign ownership in food-related industries is driving up grocery prices or posing a national or economic security risk. In the order, Trump said anti-competitive behavior — especially by companies under foreign control — threatens the stability and affordability of America's food supply. He pointed to past settlements in which some companies paid millions to resolve price-fixing allegations. The administration, he said, intends to determine whether such practices are raising the cost of living for Americans and whether they pose any security concerns. How To Prevent Calf Scours: Feed Farmatan Feed Farmatan To Prevent Scours This Upcoming Calving Season Calving season is getting ready to start for many producers and for some others it is still a ways away yet. Regardless, we need to get a jump on scours and make sure each and every calf that hits the ground has the best chance of survival. A simple solution… FARMATAN from Imogene Ingredients. WHAT CAUSES SCOURS IN BEEF CATTLE/CALVES Clostridia-Enterotoxemia The most common form of Clostridium in cattle is caused by Clostridia perfringens. The gram-positive bacteria are a challenge due to its ability to form spores and lay dormant for long-periods of time. The bacteria reproduce by releasing spores into its environment (soil, feed, manure). The spores can even lay dormant in the animal's intestine until opportunity presents itself. Infection takes place either through ingestion of spores or through an open wound. The most severe cases happen within the first month of a calf's life, and can result in sudden death. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Bloody, Mucus Present, Bubbly Dehydrated Bloat Blindness Prevention/Treatment: Prevention can be difficult due to the Clostridia spores being extremely durable and present almost everywhere. Complete cleanout and disinfection between calves is helpful, but not always effective. A good vaccination program will reduce clinical disease. The best method is to develop good gut health and the immune system of the calf. Farmatan has been shown to strengthen the intestinal wall, helping to prevent infection from taking hold. Coccidiosis Cattle are host to numerous species of Coccidia, a single-celled protozoal parasite. Infection and clinical symptoms can happen any time during a calf's life, with the most severe reaction usually occurring between 3-6 weeks of age. The life-cycle of coccidia requires time to infect the intestine causing destruction of the mucosal and epithelial lining. The oocytes mature outside the host in warm, moist environments before being consumed, causing infection of a new host. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody Depression Weight Loss Prevention/Treatment: Prevention of Coccidiosis is possible by keeping young calves separate from older animals, providing clean water and feed, and dry conditions. Isolation of infected animals is key to preventing transmission. Keeping the pen dry is the most important step a farmer/rancher can take in preventing Coccidiosis. Treatment can have a good impact on reducing secondary disease, and speeding up recovery time. Farmatan has been shown to disrupt the reproductive cycle of Coccidia; and may help strengthen the intestinal wall to prevent infection, in both the cow and calf. Coronavirus Bovine Coronavirus is a ubiquitous, envelope-viral disease, causing respiratory and enteric infection. There are many serotypes for this virus, making it difficult to test for, and create a vaccine. Coronavirus can present as either diarrhea and/or respiratory illness; transmitted through nasal discharge and/or feces. Animal reservoirs continue to spread the disease, and make eradication almost impossible. Clinical disease will likely occur between days 10-14, and present for up to 4 days. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery Nasal Discharge Coughing Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is difficult due to wild animals transmitting the disease. Keeping wild animals out of animal enclosures is essential. Isolation of infected animals is critical to preventing the spread of Coronavirus. Cryptosporidium Cryptosporidium Parvum is a single-celled parasite responsible for causing infection in young calves. The infection takes place within the first four weeks of a calves' life, afterwards immunity has developed within the calf. The parasite is either passed from the cow or spread through infected water sources. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Watery, Bloody, Mucus present Colic Depression Prevention/Treatment: Good sanitary conditions, especially clean water is essential in preventing transmission of cryptosporidium. Isolation of sick calves will help reduce the effect on the overall herd. There is some good effect of calves given adequate colostrum, however this is likely helping by reducing other pathogenic loads rather than a direct effect on Cryptosporidium, itself. Farmatan fed prior to calving has been shown to disrupt the life-cycle and reduce transmission from the cow. E-Coli Escherichia Coli is a bacterial infection that affects calves within the first week of their life. The bacteria colonize in the lower intestine and produce a toxin. The toxin causes excessive secretion of fluids. The zoonotic disease has special importance in food safety and human health. Colostrum and natural immunity are often not sufficient in preventing infection in cases of high bacterial concentrations. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Creamy, Yellow Abdominal Pains Fever Vomiting Prevention/Treatment: The best prevention methods for E. Coli include: clean water, dry bedding/environment, isolation of infected animals, and vaccination. Treatment with antibiotics and oral fluids have great benefits in reducing clinical symptoms of the disease. Farmatan has been shown to reduce bacterial load and help prevent infection. Learn more about the positive effects of Farmatan's active ingredient HERE. Rotavirus Rotavirus in calves is caused by a virus belonging to the Reoviridae family, as a non-envelope RNA virus. Rotavirus is thought to be the most common cause of neonatal diarrhea in calves. The virus tends to affect calves between the age of 1-day-old up to a month, with most cases presenting within the first week of life. Shedding and reinfection can happen in older calves and cows. Clinical symptoms are rarely present after the first month of life; older animals tend to either be carriers or asymptomatic. The majority of herds have some level present, with transmission likely happening during or shortly after birth. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Pale Yellow, Bloody Dehydrated Dull calves Reluctant to drink Prevention/Treatment: The ideal scenario is to prevent infection through, sanitary facilities (calving barn), outdoor calf housing, and a good vaccination program. Colostrum will provide much needed antibodies, protecting the calf before their immune system is fully developed to combat the disease. Farmatan fed prior to calving can help reduce the pathogen load of the cow, reducing the likelihood of transmission. Farmatan supplemented in the milk has been shown to decrease the virus' ability to cause infection and clinical disease. The best treatment for calves already presenting clinical disease is to administer oral fluids/electrolytes to rehydrate the calf. While the disease is uncommon in cattle with little effect on calf health, it has massive implications for human health and food safety. The bacteria spreads through direct contact or contaminated feed & water. This disease is highly regulated by the USDA. The most severe cases of salmonella affect calves between the ages of 7-10 days old. Clinical Signs Diarrhea - Bloody (flakes of slough tissue), Watery, Mucus present Lethargic Fever Prevention/Treatment: Prevention is always the best option: provide clean water, feed, and bedding. Isolate infected animals, ensure adequate colostrum intake, and develop a vaccination program with your veterinarian. Treatment with antibiotics and fluids (oral or intravenous) greatly increases the survival rate of calves infected with Salmonella. WATCH: https://vimeo.com/759549430/bd063fcc1f Beef Industry News Possible Slow Beef Trend in 2026 According To Rabobank Beef production by major global producers is expected to remain sluggish next year, according to analysts at the Dutch financial services cooperative Rabobank. The recent contraction in beef production is expected to affect major producers in Brazil, Canada and the United States, with New Zealand being likely to see the sharpest percentage drop in beef production, the Rabobank report predicted. Several issues are contributing to the 2025 decline and the expected drop next year, especially in light of limited cattle herds ready for slaughter in both the United States and Brazil, the report added. The long-term contraction of available cattle is being blamed for significant price hikes for retail beef in the last few years, Rabobank noted. Canada is experiencing a tighter pattern that has resulted in a decline of 41,000 metric tons of beef available for export in 2025 versus levels in 2024, according to the report. Canadian beef output in 2026 is expected to be “more limited” compared with this year for reasons also being experienced south of the Canadian border in terms of the available cattle herd. The USDA has launched a dedicated website with up-to-date information on the spread of the screwworm, which so far has been confined to cattle in several Mexican states near the U.S. border. The site includes resources for livestock producers, veterinarians, animal-health officials, wildlife experts, healthcare providers, pet owners, researchers, drug manufacturers, and the general public. Reports of the pest in Mexican cattle prompted the U.S. to halt cattle imports from Mexico back in May. USDA also committed $21 million to boost sterile fly production in Mexico as part of its response. The new website pulls together information from multiple federal partners, including the FDA, the Department of Energy, Homeland Security, the EPA, and the State Department. If these fields have too much black nightshade, be careful — it might be toxic. Black nightshade is common in many corn fields in the fall, especially those that had hail damage in the summer or any situation where the corn canopy became thin or open. It usually isn't a problem, but if the density of nightshade is very high, there is the potential that it could poison livestock. Almost all livestock, including cattle, sheep, swine, horses and poultry are susceptible. Black nightshade plants average about two feet in height and have simple alternating leaves. In the fall, berries are green and become black as the plant matures. All plant parts contain some of the toxin and the concentration increases as plants mature, except in the berries. Freezing temperatures will not reduce the toxicity. It is very difficult to determine exactly how much black nightshade is risky. Guidelines say that a cow would need to consume three to four pounds of fresh black nightshade to be at risk of being poisoned. These guidelines, though, are considered conservative since there is little data on the actual toxicity of nightshade plants. Fortunately, even though nightshade plants remain green fairly late into the fall, cattle usually don't appear to seek out nightshade plants to graze. However, green plants of nightshade might become tempting toward the end of a field's grazing period when there is less grain, husks or leaves to consume. Beef Prices Are Still A Bargain & Cattle Prices Are Not Too High Beef consumption in the U.S. is still climbing, even as the nation's cattle herd shrinks due to low prices, drought, and market instability. Recent border closures to Mexican cattle over New World Screwworm concerns, and former tariffs on Brazilian beef, helped drive both cattle and beef prices to unusually strong levels. President Trump has pledged to bring beef prices down. In the past six weeks, his administration has removed tariffs on South American food products, reversed the Brazilian beef tariffs, and moved to sharply increase Argentinian beef allowed under tariff quotas. The result: the fastest and steepest drop in feeder cattle futures ever recorded. But consumers haven't seen lower prices at the meat counter. Even with cattle prices falling about 20 percent from their highs, boxed beef prices actually climbed through October and have only recently leveled off—moving in the opposite direction of what the White House intended. Beef Industry News Tyson Announced The Closing Of Beef Plant In Nebraska The beef business has been a buzz this past week when Tyson, one of the Nation's largest meat packing companies, announced plans to close a large beef plant in Lexington, Nebraska. The news of the possible closing comes just weeks after President Donald Trump claimed the four largest companies are driving up the prices on purpose, to keep meat prices high for the consumer. On November 7, Trump took to social media to call for a DOJ investigation into the price fixing claims by saying “I have asked the DOJ to immediately begin an investigation into the Meat Packing Companies who are driving up the price of Beef through Illicit Collusion, Price Fixing, and Price Manipulation. We will always protect our American Ranchers, and they are being blamed for what is being done by Majority Foreign Owned Meat Packers, who artificially inflate prices, and jeopardize the security of our Nation's food supply.” Back in October, Tyson and Cargill agreed to pay more than $87.5 million to settle a federal lawsuit for "inflating" beef prices by limiting the supply to the public. Trump's most recent claims earlier in November call out the foreign owned meat packers, as well as the American-owned ones, like Tyson. The White House website also posted about how much influence the top four meat companies have over the price of beef saying "The “Big Four” meat packers — JBS (Brazil), Cargill, Tyson Foods, and National Beef — currently dominate 85% of the U.S. beef processing market, up from just 36% in 1980. Two of these companies, including the largest meat packer in the world, are either foreign-owned or have significant foreign ownership and control." Texas A&M economist David Anderson says government investigations into meat-packer collusion are also unlikely to lower prices. He notes that cattle prices are at record highs, and even the big processors are losing money. “If they had real market power, they wouldn't be losing money,” Anderson says. Right now, ground beef averages $6.33 a pound, up more than 11% from last year. The core issue, Anderson says, is tight cattle supply—the smallest U.S. beef-cow herd since the early 1960s. Anderson explains that every beef-packing plant, not just Tyson, is operating in the red because live cattle prices are rising faster than wholesale beef prices—a normal pattern when herds are low. When cattle are plentiful, the roles reverse: ranchers lose money and packers profit. Despite concerns about the dominance of a few large meatpackers, Anderson says there's little evidence they can artificially inflate grocery store prices. “To push prices higher, you have to control supply,” he says. “And packers don't own the cattle or the feedlots.” So what is driving today's high beef prices? References: https://thenationaldesk.com/news/americas-news-now/is-there-price-fixing-in-the-beef-industry-tyson-foods-meatpacking-ranchers-trump-grocery-prices-economy-agriculture Equine Herpes Virus In Horses The Equine Disease Communication Center is monitoring an outbreak of equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM), the neurologic form of equine herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1), that originated at the Women's Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco, Texas, on Nov. 5-9. As of November 24, the EDCC has confirmed 29 EHV-1 cases associated with the event. The cases are located in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, Washington, Arizona, and South Dakota. Herpesvirus is highly contagious among horses and can cause a variety of ailments. In many horses, the first or only sign of EHV-1 infection is fever, which can go undetected. In addition to fever, other common signs of EHV-1 infection in young horses include cough, decreased appetite, depression, and a nasal discharge. Pregnant mares typically show no signs of infection before they abort, and abortions usually occur late in gestation (around eight months) but can be earlier. Abortions can occur anywhere from two weeks to several months following infection with EHV-1. Herpesvirus is easily spread by nose-to-nose or close contact with an infectious horse; sharing contaminated equipment including bits, buckets, and towels; or clothing, hands, or equipment of people who have recently had contact with an infectious horse. Routine biosecurity measures, including hygiene and basic cleaning and disinfection practices, should be in place at all times to help prevent disease spread. Already, some equine events have been cancelled or postponed due to EHV-1, while others have been put on high alert, including the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Campbell Soup Being Investigated After Comments About Lab Grown Meat Florida's attorney general announced an investigation into Campbell Soup Co. after secretly recorded audio allegedly captured a company executive making disparaging remarks about the company's products and expressing concerns about lab-grown meat. The comments surfaced amid heightened scrutiny over Florida's ban on cultivated meat, signed into law last year. Attorney General James Uthmeier said in a social media post that Florida “doesn't do fake, lab-grown meat” and vowed to enforce the law and “shut down” violators. The state's Consumer Protection division is now launching a formal investigation into Campbell's. Thomas, 62, of Onida, South Dakota, passed away on August 19, 2025. Born December 13, 1962, in Brookings, S.D., Troy was raised in a ranching family and developed a lifelong passion for cattle. He attended South Dakota State University before returning to his family's fourth-generation Thomas Ranch, where he devoted his life to raising registered Angus, Simmental, Red Angus, and Charolais cattle. Throughout his career, Troy amassed significant acclaim in the Western and cattle show world. He won three American Royal titles, was named Charolais Herdsman of the Year, and judged major cattle shows across North America, including in Mexico and Canada. Troy married VeaBea Bourk in 1985. They shared two daughters, Taylor and Cally; sadly, Taylor predeceased him. He is survived by his wife VeaBea, daughter Cally (and her husband Clint Kindred), grandchildren Tee and Tyler, his parents Harry and Kay Thomas, his sister Tracy, and a large extended family. Troy Thomas was deeply respected in the ranching and rodeo communities—not just for his professional achievements, but for his mentorship, character, and passion for Western life.
