EPISODE 98 DETAILS “Public Lands” Rule Violation In Repeal The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has started the process to rescind the, Biden-era “Public Lands” rule. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA) and Public Lands Council (PLC) challenged the rule in a 2024 lawsuit because it violated the multiple use mandate and would have paved the way for the federal government to remove family ranching operations and other uses from these working lands. Multiple stakeholders voiced their concerns that this rule clearly violated the multiple use mandate under the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976. NCBA and PLC originally sued BLM over this rule in July of 2024 and were joined in this suit by the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Exploration and Mining Association, American Forest Resource Council, American Petroleum Institute, American Sheep Industry Association, National Mining Association, National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Natrona County Farm and Ranch Bureau, Western Energy Alliance, and Wyoming Farm Bureau Federation. Leading the charge were 174 head at 1,002 lbs bringing $356.50, followed by 59 head at 1,018 lbs for $355.75, and 116 head at 1,015 lbs at $355.00. Not far behind, 61 head at 1,002 lbs brought $350.75, and 124 head at 1,004 lbs sold for $349.50. Securing five of the top ten all-time national prices in one day, Herreid has firmly established itself as ground zero for premium heavyweight feeders in today's blazing-hot cattle market. Cattle Industry News Livestock Market Report & Outlook From Dr. Andrew Griffith The latest livestock comments from Livestock Marketing Specialist Dr. Andrew Griffith who said prices were strong for every class of animal offered on the market, which tends to bring optimism to all involved.  This optimism leads to thoughts of expanding herd sizes to capitalize on the strong market.   He continued by saying fed cattle traded unevenly steady last week.  To put this market into perspective he asked the question, how many finished cattle does it take to purchase a new pickup truck? Assuming a 1,400-pound steer and an $80,000 pickup truck, it would take 23 head to have equal value. Using similar elementary math, it would have taken 27 head to purchase a similar yet slightly lower-priced truck in 2024, and it would have taken 25 to 26 head to purchase a similar pickup truck in 2021. This comparison means absolutely nothing other than the value of a finished steer has increased more than a pickup truck in relative terms. However, it is a rather small increase, relatively speaking. He wrapped up by saying how these relative prices change over time is not all that important. What is important is if cattle feeders are making money or not. Monthly cow prices in 2025 have climbed steadily, rising from $126 in January to a record $157/cwt in July, highlighting a strong and consistent upward trend throughout the year. For perspective, prices were just $62 in 2019, meaning values have surged $81/cwt over six years or a 131% increase. Looking further back, cow prices were $43 in 2003, rising steadily over the next decade to peak at $107 in 2014 and $103 in 2015. According to Mexican government data viewed earlier and cited by the Reuters news agency, Authorities had a tally of 5,086 cases through August 17, 53% more than July's total. The infestations were mostly afflicting cattle, though cases were also reported in sheep, horses and dogs. USDA last month reinstated a ban on Mexican livestock imports — the third halt since late 2024 to imports of cattle to U.S. feedlots and packers. The agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite, which had been eradicated in North America for decades before a rapid march northward starting two years ago in Panama. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. EPISODE 97 DETAILS Brazil Positioned To Overtake The U.S. In Beef Production For The First Time Brazil On Track To Produce More Beef Than The U.S. According to the USDA's August WASDE report, U.S. beef production in 2025 is projected at 25.992 billion pounds, reflecting a decline due to reduced fed and non-fed cattle slaughter and lighter dressed weights. If realized, this would mark the lowest annual beef production for the U.S. since 2016. Meanwhile, Brazil is forecast to produce 26.23 billion pounds of beef in 2025, slightly exceeding its record output from 2024. If this projection holds, Brazil will produce 243 million pounds more beef than the United States—a historic first. This milestone marks a dramatic shift in global beef production dynamics. In 2000, the U.S. outproduced Brazil by more than 12.7 billion pounds, but that gap has steadily narrowed. While U.S. production has declined by 4.1% since 2000, Brazil's output has surged by over 82% during the same period. Brazil first surpassed 20 billion pounds of beef production in 2007 and has steadily expanded each year since. The 2025 forecast reflects the culmination of this long-term growth trajectory, positioning Brazil as the world's top beef producer for the first time on record. Cattle Industry News Govt. confirms first US human case of New World Screwworm The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC confirmed the first human case in the U.S. of New World screwworm. According to a Reuters report, the individual is a Maryland resident, and they contracted screwworm during a trip to El Salvador. The CDC confirmed the diagnosis on Aug. 4, as did the Maryland Department of Health.  In a statement to Reuters, HHS Spokesman Andrew G. Nixon said "The Risk to public health in the U.S. from this introduction is very low." In recent months, the U.S. government has taken considerable steps in protecting livestock from screwworm. Mid-July, USDA restarted its ban on Mexican livestock imports, and just last week, the agency announced a $750-million sterile fly production facility in Texas to combat the flesh-eating parasite's spread. In Texas alone, USDA estimates a screwworm outbreak could cost the state $1.8 billion in livestock deaths and other costs. Screwworms are parasitic flies whose females lay eggs in wounds on any warm-blooded animal. Once the eggs hatch, hundreds of screwworm larvae use their sharp mouths to burrow through living flesh, eventually killing their host if left untreated. Livestock traders and beef producers have been on edge about the potential for cases in cattle as prices have already hit record highs because the U.S. cattle herd is at its smallest size in seven decades. Beyond Meat recently hired a corporate restructuring expert and has let go of 44 employees in North America (6% of its global workforce). Sales in the second quarter dropped by nearly 20% year-over-year. Beyond Meat pushed back against rumors that it has filed bankruptcy, calling recent media reports "unequivocally false.” The statement comes amid a highly publicized and difficult financial period for Beyond Meat.  The company, which played a key role in establishing the market for hyper-realistic meat analogues when it launched in 2009, has seen sales stagnate as the market becomes more competitive and consumers move away from “ultra-processed” alternative proteins. EPISODE 93 DETAILS Cow Prices Double & Screwworm Threatens Texas Weigh Up Cow Prices Are Up Weigh-up cow prices have increased dramatically over the last two years and are now currently at prices that are close to double the average price of what they were just 3 years ago in 2022.  To put this in perspective, the average annual weigh-up cow prices per CWT were $60.05 in 2020, $65.40 in 2021 and $76.12 in 2022, as reported by USDA Market News at the Joplin Regional Stockyards in Missouri.  For folks who are marketing home raised cows that are more than two years of age, make sure that the income from these cows is identified as capital gains income when it is being reported for tax purposes.  This is especially important this year because many cow-calf producers will also have excellent income from the sale of weaned calves and yearlings. Capital gains income is not subject to self-employment tax, and the federal capital gains tax rate will be lower than the ordinary income tax rate for the same level of earnings. Make sure you consult with your tax professional on all income tax law and liabilities. The screwworm was first reported in Mexico in November and has steadily made its way north since then. The most northern recent reported case was in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, which is about 370 miles south of McAllen, Texas, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, says the screwworm flies could devastate the state's cattle industry if it crosses onto U.S. soil. Cornyn says an outbreak could cost Texas livestock producers approximately $1 billion and cost the general economy $3.7 billion. Last week, 175 groups sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and the U.S. House and Senate in support of building a sterile fly facility in the U.S. Among the national groups that signed the letter were the American Farm Bureau, Livestock Marketing Association, National Beef Cattlemen's Association and the National Milk Producers Association. The National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), along with numerous state cattle associations, is urging lawmakers to support the Hauling Exemptions for Livestock Protection (HELP) Act, introduced by Representative Jeff Hurd (R-CO). This critical legislation would provide long-overdue relief for livestock haulers, protecting them from the burdensome Hours of Service (HOS) and Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandates. HELP Act Would Reinstate Vital Exemptions for Livestock Transportation The HELP Act seeks to permanently codify HOS and ELD exemptions that were temporarily granted by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) during the COVID-19 pandemic. These exemptions allowed livestock truck drivers to safely transport live animals without being restricted by rigid federal mandates. For nearly two years, these waivers gave haulers the flexibility to adapt to weather, traffic, and the unique demands of transporting live animals—ensuring animal welfare and supply chain efficiency. However, once the exemptions expired, livestock haulers once again faced regulations that threaten both. By reinstating these exemptions, the HELP Act would ensure drivers can continue safely and humanely transporting livestock across the country without unnecessary delays or stress to animals. Speed Limiter Rule Dropped, But More Relief Is Needed In a recent win for the livestock industry, FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the withdrawal of a proposed rule to require speed limiters on commercial trucks. While this was welcomed by livestock haulers, HOS and ELD mandates remain a pressing concern. Unlike other freight, cattle and other livestock cannot be easily stopped, unloaded, or left idle during transport. Delays can cause undue stress or injury to animals, making flexible transportation rules essential. NCBA Thanks Rep. Jeff Hurd and Urges Congressional Action The NCBA has voiced strong support for the HELP Act and applauds Rep. Jeff Hurd for introducing this livestock-friendly legislation. Beef Cattle News Beef Market Uncertainty Fueled By Tight Supplies & High Prices According to Texas A&M Agricultural Economist David Anderson, the beef sector is entering a prolonged period of tight supplies and sustained high prices, and any meaningful herd expansion remains elusive.   Anderson said that calf prices have reached record levels, with 500- to 600-pound steers in the Southern Plains averaging $4 per pound, but instead of retaining heifers to grow the herd, producers are largely “taking the money and running.”   The shift toward expansion, when it happens, could lead to a temporary sharp decline in beef production, as fewer heifers are sent to feedlots. Anderson pointed to the upcoming Cattle on Feed report, which will include a quarterly update on heifers versus steers on feed, as a key signal.   Another headwind for beef production is the ongoing closure of the U.S.-Mexico border to imported feeder cattle due to screw worm concerns. Anderson said the loss of 26,000 head per week is equivalent to 4% of the U.S. calf crop and about 18% of feeder placements in the Southwest, with significant regional impacts.   The effects of that shortfall are already being seen, Anderson said, as steer and heifer slaughter continue to fall below year-ago levels. While heavier carcass weights have helped offset declining numbers in recent years, Anderson expects weights to dip below 2024 levels due to shorter feeding periods and fewer days on feed.   Anderson said that dynamic of fewer cattle and lower weights will continue to tighten beef supplies and support high prices. Prices for 50% lean trimmings have reached record highs amid strong demand for ground beef.   While retail prices typically dip after summer highs, Anderson said overall price levels will remain elevated. He forecast quarterly declines in beef production through 2026, citing fewer calves, a smaller cow herd and the absence of imported feeders.   Even if herd expansion begins now, Anderson said, the biology of the cattle cycle means any supply increases are years away. “We're already talking four years out before you even see increases in beef production,” he said. Beaver County Shatters Records with Top 10 All-Time Highs for 9-Weight Steers The national feeder cattle market remained red hot on Tuesday, especially for heavier weight classes, with all-time record highs set for the weighted average prices in the 800–899, 900–999, and 1,000–1,099 lb categories. Prices reached $325.79 for 8-weights, $319.39 for 9-weights, and $305.53 for 10-weights—levels once thought nearly unattainable. Records were set across the country, reflecting exceptional strength and broad-based demand in the heavyweight feeder market. Beaver County Stockyards (Beaver, OK) blew the top off the record books on Tuesday, setting an incredible 30 new barn records across multiple weight classes, including all-time highs for 4-, 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-weight steers—marking one of the most dominant single-day market performances in the barn's history. Highlights included 18 head at 748 lbs bringing $364.00/cwt, the highest 7-weight price on Tuesday and one of the Top 5 all-time; 18 head at 829 lbs at $333.50/cwt, a new all-time high for 8-weights and one of six new Top 10 sales in that class; and 15 head at 1,031 lbs bringing $312.00/cwt, the highest 10-weight ever sold at the barn. But the biggest headline came from the 9-weights, where all 10 of the top 10 highest-priced sales in Beaver County history were set in a single day, led by 49 head at 900 lbs selling for a record $327.00/cwt. Over 50 baby calves, heifers, steers, momma cows and a bull or two have gone missing throughout the past couple of months. State & National Records Broken For Feeder Cattle Green City Livestock Marketing hosted its Annual Beef BBQ Customer Appreciation event with a powerhouse two-day sale that drew intense buyer demand and showcased top-tier cattle. Widely regarded as one of the most exceptional sales in the barn's history, the event shattered records at every level—posting 35 all-time barn records, 13 new Missouri state highs, and 4 national benchmarks. The results speak to both the superior quality of the offering and the underlying strength of the current feeder market.   New highs were set across multiple weight classes, with several standout drafts making national headlines. On July 2, 2025, 11 head at 615 lbs sold for $425.00/cwt, marking the highest 6-weight steer price ever recorded in the U.S. That same day, 39 head at 705 lbs brought $369.00, the third-highest price nationally for 7-weight steers. USDA to Reopen Livestock Trade with Mexico in Phases The USDA has announced a phased reopening of U.S. ports to cattle, bison, and equines from Mexico starting July 7, 2025, beginning with the Douglas, Arizona port. This follows significant progress in Mexico's New World Screwworm (NWS) response, including expanded surveillance, increased sterile fly dispersal (over 100 million per week), and no recent signs of northward NWS spread. USDA officials conducted on-site evaluations and determined that conditions now support limited trade resumption. Ranch It Up Herd It Here: Episode 87 USDA to Build $8.5 Million Facility Announced to Boost U.S. Pest Control On June 18, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced a new sterile fly dispersal facility at Moore Airfield Base in South Texas. The $8.5 million investment aims to strengthen the USDA's ability to detect, control, and eliminate the New World screwworm (NWS). Border Closures Spark Action On May 11, the U.S. suspended imports of live cattle, bison, and horses from Mexico after NWS was found 700 miles from the U.S. border. This followed an earlier closure in November 2024, which lasted until February 1, 2025. Current Fly Production is Not Enough The U.S. now relies on a joint facility in Panama producing 100 million sterile flies per week. But future eradication may require 400–500 million weekly, driving the need for domestic capacity. What is the New World Screwworm? NWS is a parasitic fly that lays eggs in wounds of warm-blooded animals. Larvae feed on live tissue, causing severe harm or death. The Asian Long Horned Tick carries a protozoan parasite that infects red and white blood cells and causes bovine infectious anemia.   There are no approved treatments in the United States. EPISODE 86 DETAILS Agridime Order To Pay Millions In Cattle Ponzi Scheme A Texas federal court has issued a final judgment against Agridime LLC, a Fort Worth-based company, permanently banning it from commodity trading. The ruling also mandates the company to pay more than $102.9 million in restitution to defrauded customers, according to recent court documents. CFTC Alleges $161 Million Cattle Investment Fraud The final judgment stems from a May 2024 complaint filed by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). The CFTC alleged that Agridime, along with co-founders Joshua Link and Jed Wood, orchestrated a cattle investment scheme that defrauded over 2,000 individuals out of approximately $161 million. According to the CFTC, Agridime falsely marketed cattle investment opportunities by promising annual returns between 15% and 32% on $2,000 cattle purchases. The company allegedly used funds from new customers to pay existing investors, a structure that resembles a classic Ponzi scheme. Insider Commissions and Misuse of Funds Revealed The court filings also revealed that Agridime insiders diverted approximately $11 million in undisclosed commissions. These insider payments were never disclosed to investors, contributing further to the scheme's deception and financial harm to participants. Agridime Settles Case Without Admitting or Denying Allegations Agridime LLC settled the case with the CFTC without admitting or denying the allegations. As part of the settlement, the company agreed to: Permanent injunctive relief Waiver of its right to appeal A permanent ban from commodity trading Prohibition on soliciting investment funds or acting in any CFTC-registered capacity A ban on publicly denying the CFTC's allegations The company must also ensure that all employees and agents comply with the judgment's terms. Agridime Banned from Commodity Markets for Good With the court's final ruling, Agridime is permanently banned from participating in any form of commodity trading. This includes solicitation of funds, registration with the CFTC, and any related investment activity. The CFTC emphasized that the company's future conduct will be closely monitored to ensure compliance. For Cow Calf Producers, Implants Have A Clear Advantage There's a perception that non-implanted calves garner a higher premium on sale day than their implanted counterparts. However, data consistently shows no difference in sale price between implanted and non-implanted calves. Episode 82 Oklahoma joins the list of states to enact meat labeling laws.  Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt last week signed into law a measure requiring manufactured protein products to be labeled differently from meat. House Bill 1126 requires food manufacturers, distributors and retailers to clearly disclose that cell-cultivated or cultured products or those that come from a lab, plants or insect proteins are not meat. Those convicted of false advertising could face a misdemeanor. The law places the burden of proof on the manufacturer and not the retailer. Oklahoma's Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry would be responsible for investigating complaints that food products are falsely advertised or misbranded as meat products. The act takes effect Nov. 1. Several U.S. states have enacted or proposed laws regulating the labeling of meat and alternative protein products, particularly focusing on plant-based and cell-cultured (lab-grown) meats. However, data consistently shows no difference in sale price between implanted and non-implanted calves. U.S.–China Trade War Eases with Major Tariff Reductions on Meat Exports In a significant development for U.S. agriculture, the ongoing U.S.–China trade war eased this week following a new 90-day tariff reduction agreement. The deal brings temporary relief to U.S. meat exporters who have faced steep trade barriers in the Chinese market. Under the agreement, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, including meat, will fall from 125% to 10%. The reductions officially took effect on Wednesday, May 14th, signaling progress as both nations continue trade negotiations. China, the world's largest beef importer, remains a critical market for U.S. meat. In 2024 alone, U.S. exports to China included nearly $1.6 billion in beef, $1.1 billion in pork, and $490 million in poultry meat and products. This temporary tariff relief offers a much-needed boost to American meat producers and exporters while long-term trade talks continue. REFERENCE: https://www.meatingplace.com/Industry/News/Details/119098 USDA Closes U.S. Border to Livestock Imports Amid Northward Spread of New World Screwworm (NWS) The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has once again closed the southern border to live cattle, horses, and bison imports due to the ongoing detection and rapid spread of New World Screwworm or NWS,  in southern Mexico. This latest decision follows continued reports of the parasite advancing further north than previously observed—up to 700 miles from the U.S. border. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins announced the immediate suspension of livestock imports through U.S. ports of entry along the southern border. This action comes after the border had temporarily reopened in early February following enhanced inspections and biosecurity protocols. The border was initially closed in November of the previous year due to similar concerns. The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) poses a significant threat to livestock health and U.S. agriculture. Though eradicated from the United States in 1966, NWS has reemerged in remote areas of southern Mexico, including on farms with limited cattle movement. The pest's resurgence is being treated with high urgency by both U.S. and Mexican officials. To combat the spread, USDA-APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) is working closely with Mexican authorities to increase the release of sterile screwworm flies, the primary method for controlling the pest. This sterile fly technique had successfully helped maintain a barrier zone in southern Mexico and later extended into Panama, serving as a buffer for decades. However, over the past two years, the screwworm has advanced through Central America and back into Mexico, creating an escalating threat to U.S. livestock industries. USDA-APHIS and Mexican counterparts will continue aggressive surveillance, monitoring, and mitigation efforts to stop the spread. The border will remain closed until USDA determines that the risk has been sufficiently mitigated and disease metrics improve.  The decision to suspend cattle imports from Mexico   has led to a downward revision in projected U.S. beef production for 2025 and 2026, according to the agency's latest WAZ-de Report, World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates. The report cites tighter cattle supplies and reduced slaughter volumes tied to the import halt as key drivers behind the lower forecasts. Beef exports are also forecast lower as limited domestic supplies are expected to reduce U.S. competitiveness abroad. Trade Wars Cease As U.S. Beef Exports Resume The ongoing U.S.–China trade war eased this week following a new 90-day tariff reduction agreement.    Under the agreement, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while China's retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products, including meat, will fall from 125% to 10%. The reductions officially took effect on Wednesday, May 14th.   In addition, the U.S. and United Kingdom governments announced an “agreement in principle” Thursday for a trade deal that promises to lift beef exports.   The outline includes cuts to recently hiked U.S. tariffs on British cars, steel and aluminum, while the U.K. would slash tariffs on 2,500 U.S. products to a reported average tariff rate 1.8%.  On the beef side, sales to the U.K. were worth $32 million last year.   Agriculture Secretary Brooke called the announcement “a historic deal with the UK that secures increased access for American agricultural products, including unprecedented access for American beef and ethanol. EPISODE 78 DETAILS U.S.-China Tariff War Cripples Agricultural Exports as Industry Faces Major Setbacks Triple-Digit Tariffs Disrupt U.S. Beef, Poultry, and Pork Exports to China and Hong Kong Triple-digit tariff rates on goods traded between the United States and China have “effectively closed that market for U.S. exports,” according to a source quoted by Politico from the agriculture industry. Despite the sharp decline in imports, China still purchased $25 billion worth of U.S. food and agricultural products last year. “Making up for that around the world is going to be very challenging,” the source emphasized. The Trump administration recently imposed new tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese goods, compounding already substantial levies. In response, China retaliated with tariffs reaching 125% on U.S. exports. Since early March, U.S. beef exports to China have come to a near standstill following Beijing's declaration that U.S. export licenses were no longer valid. Even before the full retaliation in early April, U.S. chicken exports to China dropped by 48% in February compared to the same month last year. In 2024, China and Hong Kong together accounted for $525 million in U.S. poultry meat and products (excluding eggs), ranking as the third-largest export market behind Mexico and Canada. Beef exports reached nearly $2 billion, just behind South Korea, while pork exports to the region surpassed $1.1 billion, trailing only Mexico and Japan. This system, adopted by Sustainable Beef LLC, is set to transform the industry by offering competitive premiums for upper two-thirds Choice carcasses, regardless of hide color. Angus, Red Angus & Charolais Cross Cattle Receive Same Premium Tom Brink, RAAA CEO, announced that Sustainable Beef LLC, opening in April 2025 in North Platte, Nebraska, will implement a color-blind grid system, equally rewarding Red Angus, Black Angus, and smoky cattle. “This system levels the feeder calf market, allowing feedlots to confidently invest in Red Angus and black-hided cattle, knowing both will qualify for top premiums,” Brink said. Kelly Smith, RAAA Director of Commercial Marketing, emphasized RAAA's efforts to connect Red Angus producers with feedlots through its feeder cattle network. He highlighted that FCCP-tagged cattle will meet the Angus label's genetic verification standards, ensuring seamless access to premium marketing opportunities. Mark Nelson, Sustainable Beef's Director of Cattle Procurement, reinforced the company's commitment to sustainability and producer profitability. Sustainable Beef will provide an exceptional work environment and favor moderate carcass sizes, which naturally benefits Red Angus genetics. Cattle Industry News JBS Sees Strong Demand Despite Challenges In The U.S. Cattle Cycle According to JBS executives, JBS expects a more challenging US cattle supply scenario in 2025 compared to last year, when strong beef consumption and initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies contributed to the performance of the US beef business unit. Executives commented saying that the U.S. cattle cycle will likely be more challenging this year, regardless of the speed of herd replacement, specifically saying that JBS Beef North America's margins still have room to improve by 1% to 1.5% in 2025 due to the company's initiatives to improve commercial and operational efficiencies. Robust demand continues to support the company's investments in expanding its US meat processing and prepared food facilities. In February, JBS announced $200 million in investments to expand its beef production facilities in Cactus, Texas, and Greeley, Colo. In the other regions where JBS operates, demand for all animal proteins also remains strong. Beef Sales To China Plummet March 2025 Showed A Dramatic Drop Is Beef Sales To China New data from the USDA revealed steep declines in beef sales to China following the expiration of trade licenses. According to USDA/FAS data collected by USMEF, beef net sales to China for March 7-13 "plummeted" 92% from the previous week, and for March 14-20, they fell 97%. Overall through March 20, beef net sales to all countries are 43% lower than the previous four-week average. Additional analysis from Steiner Consulting Group found that outstanding beef sales to China are 24% lower year over year. The trade licenses, which were granted in the "Phase 1" trade deal with China in 2020, provide hundreds of U.S. meat plants with access to the Chinese market. However, following a 20% U.S. tariff on all Chinese exports, the Chinese Communist Party promised "strong, powerful countermeasures," which have included not only the expiring licenses, but also additional tariffs on exports of U.S. poultry (15%) and pork (10%). Trade licenses to pork and poultry processors were renewed. According to FAS, China was the U.S.' No. 3 agricultural export market in 2024, with $1.58 billion in beef, $1.11 billion in pork, and $490.11 million in poultry sales. While avian influenza had already been detected in cattle and other mammals, including in the United States, the infection of a sheep will increase concern over the potential impact of the disease's spread. There have been cases among humans which have ranged in severity from no symptoms to, in rare cases, death. But there has not yet been any confirmed transmission between humans. The virus is spread through contact with infected birds or other species, including through touching their droppings and bedding, although people can also catch the virus by killing or preparing infected poultry for cooking. Avian flu has been detected in cattle in the United States, with the Centers for Disease Control reporting 41 cases and 989 dairy herds affected as of last Friday. Experts say the risk of avian flu to the general public is very low. Mexico Pushing For More Domestic Pork Facing Trade War Mexico has become a huge importer of U.S. pork, but the government in Mexico City is now talking about self-sufficiency as trade tensions with Washington are about to intensify. In a recent meeting with domestic producers, the Mexican Agriculture Minister pointed out that the country's own pork sector only meets 53% of demand. Imports last year reached 1.4 million metric tons, a large majority from the neighboring United States. President Donald Trump, in early February, threatened 25% tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, imposed taxes on large numbers of imports from both countries in early March and has vowed to tariff most other products on April 2. Canada has already retaliated against some U.S. products including chicken, while Mexico is poised to impose tariffs on exports including meats if the United States carries out its threat next week.  Pork demand has soared as Mexico has become more affluent. Last year, 38% of U.S. pork and pork variety meat exports went to Mexico. By value, exports to Mexico jumped 10% in 2024 to nearly $2.6 billion, more than the next two markets, China/Hong Kong and Japan combined. The value of U.S. pork exports to Mexico has more than doubled from $1.15 billion in 2020, and the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service projected further growth this year before trade policy disruptions. Sustainable Beef Plant Comes To Nebraska A crowd estimated at more than 1,200 people witnessed a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a $400-million cattle processing plant this week in North Platte, Neb., a project that Sustainable Beef LLC originally announced in 2021. The new facility is expected to provide about 850 jobs and expand beef processing capacity in the area in addition to establishing more long-term sustainable growth for local cattle producers and family farms. EPISODE 74 DETAILS Consumer Meat Trends: Ground Beef No. 1 Millennial Meat Consumers Prefer Ground Beef Over All Other Meats Consumer trends, food trends, how have these trends changed?  Who is consuming our product and why.  That was the purpose of the Power of Meat Presentation at the 2025 Annual Meat Conference.  The 20th such survey, the Power of Meat polled more than 1,600 consumers, and overlaid their responses with data from in-person consumer interviews and various other avenues with particular attention given to millennial shoppers as they start to take the place as meat consumers. According to the survey, ground beef was the number 1 food category of the year – among 85,000 other foods - in terms of dollar growth from 2023 to 2024, and chicken was not far behind at No. 10. All told, ground beef sales last year were up 9.6% to $15.3 billion, with unit sales up 6.8% to $1.6 billion. With a lot of focus on the millennial shopper here are some of the compelling trends that were established: With 94% of consumers concerned about the cost of living (“astronomical” was a frequent word among surveys), and the average price per unit of meat up 34% from 2019, more and more consumers want to recreate the restaurant experience at home; as a result, retail sales for meat reached $104.6 billion in 2024 (up 1%), and pounds hit 22.8 billion (up 2.3%). 72% of consumers said they'd return to normal restaurant purchases if their budget allowed it. Of the meat case's 2024 growth in units sold, millennials accounted for 62% of that growth, and for dollar sales growth. The survey showed opportunities for processors to advertise specific features on their product's packaging, including: cook times; proper cooking appliances (especially air fryers for millennials); the nutrients in meat, such as zinc and iron; and finally, messaging around animal welfare, which is prominent in the UK and other European markets. EPISODE 73 DETAILS Pork & Poultry To China; Beef Left Waiting U.S. Pork and Poultry Exports to China Resume, But Beef Industry Awaits License Renewals In a significant development for U.S. agriculture, pork and poultry producers have regained access to Chinese markets, while beef exporters remain in limbo. The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) recently restored export licenses for over 300 U.S. pork processing and cold storage facilities, securing trade for the next five years. However, U.S. beef companies are still waiting for confirmation that their "expired" licenses under the Phase 1 trade agreement will be renewed. China Reopens Market For U.S. Pork & Poultry According to the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC), the agreement reinstates billions of dollars in U.S. pork and poultry exports. Major producers such as Cargill Inc., Smithfield Foods, and Tyson Foods Inc. will now resume shipments to China, ensuring steady demand for American meat products. In 2024 alone, U.S. pork exports to China totaled over 367,000 metric tons, valued at approximately $1.1 billion. Uncertainty Looms For U.S. Beef Exports Despite these positive developments, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has confirmed that the recent license renewals did not extend to beef producers. The U.S. beef industry exported an estimated 170,000 metric tons to China in 2024, making it a critical market. However, industry analysts at Stephens Inc. caution that uncertainty remains until the registration status is clarified. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) noted that China has yet to respond to renewal requests for U.S. beef export registrations. Over the past few days, the registration status of U.S. meat exports shifted from "existing" to "expired," raising concerns within the industry. Without clarity from Chinese authorities, American beef producers face potential trade disruptions. Implication For U.S. Beef Producers With pork and poultry exports back on track, the focus now shifts to securing access for U.S. beef. Industry leaders and trade officials continue to push for renewed agreements, emphasizing the importance of stability in international trade. As the situation unfolds, stakeholders in the U.S. beef sector remain hopeful for a resolution that reinstates access to one of the world's largest meat markets.
