How WindBorne Systems landed their first Air Force contract through Defense Innovation Unit | John Dean

WindBorne Systems is transforming global weather forecasting by deploying long-duration weather balloons that fly for weeks instead of hours. What began as a Stanford Student Space Initiative project has scaled to 100 balloons aloft simultaneously, targeting 500 by end of next year, with an end goal of 10,000 balloons monitoring Earth's atmosphere. In this episode of BUILDERS, I sat down with John Dean, Co-Founder and CEO of WindBorne Systems, to explore how the company secured its first government contract in under three years without lobbyists, achieved 4x annual manufacturing growth, and built Weather Mesh—an AI weather model that outperforms competitors from Google DeepMind. Topics Discussed: The technical evolution from Stanford project to operational constellation of altitude-controlled balloons Strategic decision to pursue government revenue before building B2B forecasting products Navigating Defense Innovation Unit and Air Force Lifecycle Management Center procurement as a founder Timeline from founding to first grants (within six months) and first data delivery contract (two and a half years) Current roughly 50/50 revenue split between civilian agencies (NOAA, international weather services) and Department of Defense Building Weather Mesh after Huawei's Pangu Weather validated end-to-end AI forecasting viability Transitioning from founder-led sales by promoting a Palantir hire from proposal writer to public sector growth leader The 30-year vision of millions of fingernail-sized atmospheric sensors creating a planetary nervous system GTM Lessons For B2B Founders: Study the bureaucracy's incentive structures before pitching product value: John spent years mapping how government procurement actually works rather than leading with product capabilities. The critical insight: in DoD sales, the warfighter (end user) doesn't control purchasing decisions. Success requires understanding each stakeholder's specific mandate and aligning your solution to their organizational incentives, not just operational needs. For civilian agencies like NOAA, the dynamics differ entirely. Founders entering govtech should invest 6-12 months learning procurement mechanics before expecting revenue. Use government contracts as non-dilutive scaling capital for hardware businesses: WindBorne secured SBIR grants within six months, then landed their first Air Force data delivery contract through Defense Innovation Unit at the two-and-a-half-year mark. John explicitly treated early grants as equivalent to venture funding but without equity dilution. For companies building physical infrastructure at scale (satellites, hardware networks, manufacturing operations), government contracts provide the runway to reach technical milestones that unlock larger B2B opportunities. This sequencing—government funding first, then B2B products built on that foundation—proves more capital-efficient than attempting to raise massive venture rounds upfront for unproven hardware. Integrate with legacy systems rather than attempting wholesale replacement: WindBorne doesn't aim to replace the 1,000 radiosondes launched daily worldwide—they're expanding coverage from the current 15% of Earth (where humans can launch traditional balloons) to 100%. The hardware is revolutionary (weeks of flight versus two hours), but the go-to-market integrates into existing weather agency workflows and feeds into established models like GFS and ECMWF. This approach accelerated adoption because agencies could add WindBorne data without overhauling their entire forecasting infrastructure. The displacement of radiosondes becomes economically inevitable long-term, but only after proving the system at scale. Move fast once adjacent technology validates your thesis: WindBorne wasn't investing in AI-based weather forecasting until Huawei's Pangu Weather paper demonstrated that end-to-end neural weather models could compete with physics-based simulations. Once that validation appeared, John's team moved immediately—adopting the open architecture and expanding it into Weather Mesh before the approach became widely adopted. The lesson isn't to wait for competitors, but to monitor adjacent technological developments and move decisively when validation emerges. They built a top-performing model by being early to a proven approach, not first to an unproven one. Hire for mid-level roles and promote based on demonstrated judgment: John hired Dana from Palantir as a proposal writer, not as a sales executive. He watched her demonstrate strong opinions that consistently proved correct, then promoted her to build and lead the entire public sector growth organization. This internal promotion model worked better than external executive hires because the person already understood WindBorne's technology, customers, and internal culture. For specialized domains like government sales, bringing in experienced operators at individual contributor levels and promoting them as they prove their judgment builds more effective organizations than hiring executives to parachute in. // Sponsors: Front Lines — We help B2B tech companies launch, manage, and grow podcasts that drive demand, awareness, and thought leadership. www.FrontLines.io The Global Talent Co. — We help tech startups find, vet, hire, pay, and retain amazing marketing talent that costs 50-70% less than the US & Europe. www.GlobalTalent.co // Don't Miss: New Podcast Series — How I Hire Senior GTM leaders share the tactical hiring frameworks they use to build winning revenue teams.

Original show notes: In late June 1973, former White House counsel John Dean delivered startling testimony before the congressional committee investigating Watergate: Richard Nixon had an enemies list. The point, as Dean had written in a 1971 memo, was to "use the available federal machinery to screw our political enemies." The exposure of Nixon's dirty tricks led to his downfall. In 2024, Donald Trump openly campaigned to exact revenge on his enemies. Rather than alienating Republican voters, Trump's call for retribution rallied them. In this episode, historian Ken Hughes compares and contrasts the differences between then and now. FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageForget the tidy Watergate script. We dive into a sharp, good‑faith debate that tests whether Nixon's fall was inevitable because of crimes and a collapsing cover‑up—or whether a biased legal apparatus and quiet coordination with the bench turned a scandal into a manufactured constitutional crisis. We walk step by step through the break‑in, the inner‑circle misconduct, and the public narrative that took hold, then hold it up against internal memos, ex parte contacts, and appellate maneuvers that suggest the field wasn't level. You'll hear why John Dean's credibility mattered so much—and how his one‑to‑four‑year “sentence” functioned more like theater than punishment before a D.C. jury. We explore the claim that key exculpatory shifts in Dean's statements were kept from the defense, and why reported meetings between prosecutors and judges Sirica and Gesell still raise eyebrows. The picture that emerges isn't exoneration; it's complexity: serious crimes at the top, and a prosecution willing to shape process to guarantee outcomes. We also revisit the so‑called “smoking gun” tape with fresh context. Was the push to use the CIA to deter FBI interviews an attempt to protect the burglary conspiracy—or to shield prominent Democratic donors who secretly backed Nixon's 1972 campaign? Motive doesn't excuse misuse of power, but it changes the legal calculus and the counsel Nixon received from his own team. Along the way, we highlight Geoff Shepard's insider research across three books, including newly surfaced documents that challenge what many of us assumed was settled. If you care about accountability, due process, and how narratives harden into history, this conversation will push you to think harder. Government's Office of Evil - Special Prosecutors and Special Counsels (Special Edition)

Nixon and Watergate

Send us a textFew offices in the history of our government have produced more harm, to more people, more often, and more efficiently that the office created in 1973 to investigate the Watergate Scandal. The Special Prosecutor's statute stayed on the books the rest of the 20th century and was used to wound the reelection campaign of George H. W. Bush, and then cripple the final years of the Presidency of Bill Clinton. It has horribly damaged the historical legacies of four United States Presidents: Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. Ironically, the very party who dreamed this evil institution up, the Democratic Party,  was the same one to end it when the statue expired in 1999, but only after it had been effectively used to demolish a President of their own party, even as the Impeachment attempt failed to remove Bill Clinton from office.  Then congress invented its bastardized cousin, the Special Counsel statue. While it does have some modest restraints compared to the absolute total powers of the Special Prosecutor's statute, the record of abuse there may not be fully known until our current era, centered around Donald Trump, is over. As we look back at the 1992 Presidential Election and its controversial end. We thought this the perfect opportunity to show to our listeners the full impact of the 30 years of dishonesty that has been used to devastatingly wound four American Presidencies. But even worse than the damage done to the institution of the Presidency is the personal destruction it has wrought on the innocent aids to these Presidents. Often young men and women, whose only real crime was earnestly wanting to play role in the history of the nation and seize the opportunity so few people get in life, the chance to work for the President of the United States. Instead, many faced prison time, and were financially wiped out, while the most dastardly, horrible , unethical people you could have ever dreamed up paraded themselves on television and in books as lawyers who champion justice while playing on the trusting nature of a naive public that still believes that our Justice System is the one uncorrupted branch of government left in the land. Here we lay everything out, the abuses of power, and the intentionally corrupt birth of the most evil office our government has ever created. We hope it will serve as a warning for what we have seen in our more modern times, so that perhaps wise heads will see to it that this institution dies, with a stake through its heart. Like this bloodsucking vampire of an institution of division and destruction  truly deserves.  Boundless Insights - with Aviva KlompasIn depth analysis of what's happening in Israel—and why it matters everywhere.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifyQuestions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

SEASON 3 EPISODE 75: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN Special Edition (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Some time over Thanksgiving in Nantucket the light bulb went off over Joe Biden's head and he finally realized that no, the norms and traditions and institutions to which he and most of the rest of us have dedicated our lives did NOT miraculously re-grow, did NOT suddenly spring, fully restored and intact, from the ground. He saw that not only was his son about to go to prison because of his own foolish decision to not interfere with an enfeebled Department of Justice, and because of the dictator it let get away, who would now aim his DOJ at Hunter Biden - and Joe Biden - and anybody else - for personal revenge. The President figured this out and pulled his son out of harm's way. And much of he left attacked him for it. They are Morons. I don't care about Hunter Biden, particularly. I care about the fact that we are 48 days away from a nascent military dictatorship taking over this government, supported by an unknown percentage of the population that wants to see Hunter and Joe Biden hanging from construction cranes parading through the streets, and wants to see Trump in power for life. A We JUST got one more guy out of their sights and we JUST shoved one more plotline up Trump, and up Kash Patel and Pete Hegseth and Stephen Miller and whichever other lunatics Trump wants to take over the asylum. And countless liberals – and anti-Trumpers – think this will actually provide cover for Trump pardoning the January 6thinsurrectionists because apparently for the last ten years they have been hallucinating and thinking Trump has ever bothered to seek cover for anything. Or they think we should be "better" than them. The Trumpists are planning to put us in camps. I don't care if we are better than them or worse than them or monstrous to them. If somebody's going to go to camps, it ain't going to be us, it's got to be them. End of debate. In addition to explaining why this was not just the right decision but should be a template of thousands of further pardons, permit me to excoriate a bunch of the clowns who cannot see the forest for the trees. Or the fact that the forest is on fire. And then for giggles we have the moronic comments of Nate Silver and Dinesh D'Souza, complaining about pardons when he himself got an undeserved pardon. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we welcome back to our show, a very special guest, John Dean. For those of you who lived through Watergate, his name is synonymous with the political intrigue of the 1970's. Dean served as White House Counsel for President Richard Nixon from July 1970 until April 1973. In that position, he became deeply involved in events leading up to the Watergate burglaries and the subsequent scandal and cover-up. Referred to as the "master manipulator of the cover-up" by the FBI, Dean's testimony before the House was watched by some 80 million Americans. Granted immunity, Dean laid out in stunning detail and intricacy how the President not only knew about but orchestrated the break-in and burglary of the DNC. He ultimately was sentenced to one year in Federal Prison, but emerged from the experience as a changed and soulful individual. Dean renounced his former politics and started a second life as an author and speaker. He's penned five books about Watergate and 10 books in total; including his most recent tome, Authoritarian Nightmare: Trump and his Followers. Dean is now the last man standing from that era, He is the last connection between this nation's authoritarian past and present. The difference being, Dean thought none of this would happen again. As the planet warms, we're experiencing more frequent and destructive extreme weather. Yet, 85% of the world lacks critical atmospheric data for precise forecasting that could help us better prepare. John Dean and Kai Marshland, Co-Founders of WindBorne Systems, are on a mission to close this gap. Born out of the Stanford Student Space Initiative, WindBorne began as a project to extend the flight duration of conventional weather balloons. Realizing the impact of their technology on climate change, they turned their project into a venture-backed startup serving both private and government partners like NOAA and the U.S. Air Force. John and Kai share how WindBorne deploys a global constellation of autonomous, navigable, AI-powered balloons that fly longer, are more sustainable, and collect more real-time measurements than standard balloons. Their data is fed into powerful AI models to create the world's most accurate forecasts – better than Google DeepMind's GraphCast – unlocking the potential to improve disaster preparedness and climate resilience worldwide.Show notes, episodes, and more at thenextgreatthingpodcast.com. Abe Fortas was a rising star on the Supreme Court. He argued a still-legendary case before it and then was appointed one of its justices. For many he was seen as the successor to Earl Warren. It was when he was nominated for Chief Justice that opposition cemented. He was too close to the President, too liberal on issues, and then there were disclosures of contributions he had received were revealed. After a drawn-out stalemate he withdrew his candidacy for Chief Justice. But it wouldn't stop there. Fortas also stepped down as an Associate Justice as the administration changed and political pressure increased. The Fortas case would be revealed later by insider and Watergate persona John Dean as part of an 'unpacking' plan that President Nixon had to reduce the left-lean of the Warren court, though it wasn't obvious at the time. But it's not that simple either. Fortas's case also has set a precedent for the danger of having a Justice with a close relationship to the Chief Executive. Learn more about your ad choices.
