Clare County Dog Warden Frankie Coote has been telling Clare FM's Seán Lyons he believes regulations are sorely needed around the housing and care of dogs on the "restricted breeds" list.

The North in Numbers - the podcast that gets the human stories behind the statistics - is back, taking over The Northern Agenda again this week. Annie Gouk, a journalist who writes local news stories based on statistics for regional papers up and down the country, looks at the data on dog attacks, speaking to experts to try and unpick what's behind the increase, as well as what needs to be done to tackle the problem. Official NHS figures show that in the year to March, there were 9,277 hospital admissions where the patient had been bitten or struck by a dog. That was a record high, with the number increasing steadily since at least 1998, when figures began. Behind those numbers are people like Kayleigh, whom Annie speaks to, who have been left with life-changing injuries. The North in Numbers, in collaboration with The Northern Agenda, is a Laudable production for Reach. It is written and hosted by Annie Gouk, and produced by Daniel J. McLaughlin. This week we're joined by Jordan Shelley, Behaviour & Training animal welfare expert. We chat about his campaign Flop Not Crop and how he has raised awareness about the cruelty of cropping dogs' ears, which is illegal in the UK. Stopping nasty ear cropping kits (legal in the USA), from entering the UK by banning their sales online to the UK, and helping to curb this barbaric ‘fashion' trend in certain breeds. We talk about re-introducing the dog licence and Jordan discusses his role at Animal Licensing Wales. We also discussed banning sales of dogs and live animals on the internet and the huge disappointment in the shelving of the Animal welfare (Kept Bill), and the impact of this in terms of dog welfare in the UK. We chat about the XL Bully and why adding this ‘breed' onto the Dangerous Dogs list won't really make any difference to reducing dog bite incidents, rather it lies in more education and a centralised approach. Episode 25. In this episode, we hear from Shakira about the importance of providing nonhuman animal care during and after rescue and liberation. Shakira calls for more work to be done in the vegan community, so that more humans feel empowered to become involved in this aspect of liberation. Nonhuman animal care is itself a form of activism. Shakira also explains some of the issues that contribute to the oppression of nonhumans kept as companion animals, particularly dogs designated by law as “dangerous”. It’s vital that anti-speciesist activists and vegans increase their knowledge of nonhuman animal behaviours and individual needs, as well as be mindful of their language and actions so that they don’t play into the hands of the oppressors.
