EK On the Go

Pack your camper as we tour America's National Parks—from Acadia to Zion. Our guide is modern-day folk hero Douglas Leen, whose Ranger Doug Enterprises recently published “Ranger of the Lost Art: Rediscovering the WPA Poster Art of Our National Parks.” Doug describes how in 1971, while working as a seasonal park ranger at Grand Teton National Park, he unearthed an old poster tucked atop a barn rafter, saving it from oblivion. This hidden gem was among the last remaining promotional posters for 14 U.S. National Parks, printed between 1938 and 1941 by FDR's Works Progress Administration. Doug recounts how his dusty discovery fueled a lifelong obsession to find the other 13 original silkscreened posters from that era. His hunt led to encounters with art thieves and fostered friendships with fellow connoisseurs. Leen explains how he forged partnerships with artists and commercial printers to recreate all 14 posters. His team soon began creating numerous contemporary artworks commissioned by many of the 400+ National Parks units. Leen remembers his simultaneous dentistry practice, which he launched above Seattle's bustling Pike Place Market during its renaissance. This career carried Dr. Leen to faraway Barrow (now Utqiagvik), Alaska, and beyond. A restless spirit, Doug champions the intersecting causes of art conservation and land conservation. His solo “Ranger Doug” roadshows at National Parks have racked up nearly 50,000 miles to date on the restored Airstream trailer. Unlike the mythic Appleseed who sought to tame the wilderness, citizen Leen's art and advocacy echo the democratic ethos of the New Deal era and a profound respect for natural wonders that inspire his life and work. "Today I'm on the road all the time with this book, kind of a Johnny Appleseed or Forrest Gump somebody called me once—I think it was the New York Times. But I'm out there trying to preach the message; and it's getting out there.” ~Doug Leen

I had "Ranger of the Lost Art" Doug Leen on today. Very interesting, man, not only for what he's done for the arts, but just as much for what he's done for American history. He starts out as a park ranger, and even before that, he's in Vietnam Ultimately he gets involved in Kent State after he gets back from the war and meets with Nixon and talked to him about the his opposition for the war. It's also a story of discovery. You see, Doug finds this poster when he's in his mid-twenties, working as a park ranger. He makes this discovery and then decides that there's more to it and that he needs to figure it out. He keeps this poster his whole life. It goes with him from place to place and finally decides to solve the riddle he stumbled upon all of those years ago. That's what this podcast is really about. The story of the missing National Parks posters that were done by WPA  artists between 1938 and 1941. Doug has a book he just put out about his journey to uncover the missing pieces called "RANGER OF THE LOST ART–REDISCOVERING THE WPA POSTER ART OF OUR NATIONAL PARKS". To learn more about the book and to see various posters he found, visit his website: rangerdoug.comSo anyways, unique, fun, and interesting story. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Every now and then you run across something that captures your imagination while giving you a connection to an outdoor experience you loved. That's exactly how I felt the first time I came across one of the National Park posters designed by amateur parks historian Ranger Doug Leen and his team of artists and creators. The colors, design and connection to the past reminded me of all of the work and drama that went into protecting the lands I had come to love -- and why doing so is important. Many other collectors and park enthusiasts feel just as I do about the prints -- and the mystery and chase around creating them. In this episode Ranger Doug, so-called ‘Ranger of the Lost Art,' tells the story of chasing down the historic park prints, creating new ones in their style and why these connect visitors to the national parks they love. This week we pick up with the musings of Doug Leen.  As a young park ranger in the 1970s, Leen stumbled upon a poster promoting a meet-the-ranger event at the Grand Teton National Park.  It turned out to be one of 14 long-forgotten silk-screened posters made under the Works Progress Administration to promote tourism to the national parks.  In the 50 years since that discovery, Leen has been searching high and low for the rest of the missing posters.  His efforts have yielded noteworthy success, stirring up widespread interest in the posters and evolving into a thriving printing business of his own. As Lynn Riddick continues her talk with Doug, he discusses his business, Ranger Doug’s Enterprises, and how the popularity of the posters has generated millions of dollars in revenue for the national parks.  We also check in with Earl Brechlin, the communications director for Friends of Acadia, to get the latest on how the coronavirus pandemic is affecting that friends group and how it is responding.

Welcome to the dHarmic Evolution Podcast, and joining us from the music city of Nashville, Tennessee is a local born, raised and made, Savannah Morris, with her own distinctive sound, and an energy that is hard to duplicate, take a listen to where she has been, and more importantly, where she is heading!  Born in a musical family, Savannah feels the path towards her career in music was made the moment she took her first breath. Growing up around a supportive and inspirational environment of parents who were not just musically talented but local celebrities, went a long way in weaving the fate of Savannah and her brother as music proteges.  As one of the 8 Nashville Natives, Savannah feels blessed both career-wise and socially by networking and linking with a lot of the Native locals in the music and entertainment industry, all of whom have supported and helped her evolve and get better with her music.  Recalling her daily ‘SHEPF' routine, which was Savannah and her brother's daily after-school drill of having snacks, doing homework, exercise, and later on playing the piano and fiddle. Savannah admits that it all annoyed her, but nostalgically reminiscent, this routine was a key factor leading to her disciplined and passionate drive towards success in her music career.  Growing up in a musical family has its pros. Savannah is a testament to this as she narrates the invaluable opportunities and chances she got from performing alongside her parents, gaining not just the much-needed confidence which was a “must-have” for her lifelong career in music, but she also got to meet great individuals and celebrities like Morgan Freeman.  Quotes from Savannah  You're blessed to be an artist, you're blessed to be doing music as a career, and although a lot of artists fail to see this as they're blinded by their goals of becoming big and famous. Information this episode's guest: Riders In The Sky (https://www.ridersinthesky.com) are truly exceptional. By definition, empirical data, and critical acclaim, they stand "hats & shoulders" above the rest of the purveyors of C & W - "Comedy & Western!" For more than thirty years Riders In The Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing the genre. And while remaining true to the integrity of Western music, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding the genre with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life "The Cowboy Way!" Riders In The Sky are exceptional not just in the sense that their music is of superlative standards (they are the ONLY exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy, and Riders have won two), but by the fact that their accomplishments are an exception to the rule as well. As a classic cowboy quartet, the trail has led them to heights they could have never predicted. Riders have chalked up over 6100 concert appearances in all 50 states and 10 countries, appearing in venues everywhere from the Nashville National Guard Armory to Carnegie Hall, and from county fairs to the Hollywood Bowl. Their cowboy charisma and comedic flair made them naturals for TV, and landed them their own weekly show on TNN, as well as a Saturday morning series on CBS. They have been guests on countless TV specials, documentaries and variety shows, appearing with everyone from Barney to Penn & Teller. And their animated likenesses have shared the screen with Daffy Duck on the Cartoon Network, and the Disney Channel's Stanley. If you consider their compositional credits, one might call them "Writers In The Sky!" In addition to penning award winning songs for their own albums, they wrote the score for Pixar Animation's 2002 Academy Award-winning short "For the Birds." They composed the theme song for the internet cartoon show "Thomas Timberwolf" by renowned Bugs Bunny creator Chuck Jones. But the animated character that history will most certainly link to Riders In The Sky is the loveable cowboy Woody, as Riders performed "Woody's Round Up" in "Toy Story 2," with the album of the same name garnering Riders their first Grammy Award in 2001 for "Best Musical Album for Children." Two years later, Riders roped their second Grammy in the same category, for "Monsters Inc. - Scream Factory Favorites," the companion CD to Pixar's award winning movie.
