In this conversation, Sarah, Derrell, and Marc discuss the educational landscape in Indiana, focusing on the work of 50 Can, a campaign aimed at improving educational opportunities for all children. They explore the impact of COVID-19 on school choice and parental satisfaction, the purpose and methodology of their recent study on educational options, and the importance of mental health support in schools. The discussion highlights the need for advocacy at the state level and the significance of understanding parents' perspectives on their children's education. The conversation explores the disparities in educational opportunities and resources available to families, particularly focusing on the impact of income levels on access to tutoring and extracurricular activities. The speakers discuss the importance of extended learning opportunities, the role of information asymmetry in parental engagement, and the varying satisfaction levels among different school types. They highlight the challenges faced by rural families in accessing educational resources and the innovative policy interventions being implemented in states like Indiana to improve educational outcomes. Takeaways The conversation starts with light-hearted ice breakers about favorite colors. 50Can aims to ensure every child has access to a great education regardless of their address. Advocacy at the state level is crucial for educational reform. COVID-19 has shifted the conversation towards school choice and parental needs. The study aims to collect data on educational opportunities and parental satisfaction. Mental health support in schools has become a priority for families post-COVID. Indiana ranks high in parental satisfaction with schools compared to the national average. There are significant gaps in educational support between low-income and higher-income families. The study's methodology involved surveying a representative sample of parents across states. Partnerships with local organizations were essential for contextualizing the study's findings. Raising the floor on educational disparities can benefit more people. Did you find this episode informative? Help us out! President Biden and former President Trump will face off in the first 2024 presidential debate later this week. Ravi takes stock of where both candidates stand heading into the debate, from their status in the polls and different approaches to fundraising to why TikTok videos about Trump receive more positive engagement than videos that mention Biden. Then, Ravi welcomes Darrell Bradford, president of 50CAN, to discuss the future of education and what we can learn from the evolution of education reform. They explore how the country went from a bipartisan consensus around No Child Left Behind to a backlash against high standards and accountability, growing fissures within education reform, and what it really means for a school to engage in activism. Finally, Ravi and Derrell turn to the future and the growing movement around new school models, including hybrid schools, microschools, and homeschooling. They discuss how Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) might impact this growth, what's driving families to new school models, the reluctance of many Democrats to join the conversation, and why this is such a revolutionary moment in education. "The unusual part about it is how he's been able to just completely disappear..."On 13 March 2019, at approximately 10:29 AM, emergency dispatchers in Grand Rapids, Michigan received a 9-1-1 call from a cell phone. In the minute-long conversation that followed, the female caller whispered about someone trying to kill her, and urged for police to arrive quickly. Officers show up at the address she gave roughly seven minutes later, but observed no suspicious behavior so they soon left.A little over two hours later, officers were called back to the home located along Sheldon Avenue. Inside, they would discover the bodies of two women, members of the same family who lived together. Investigators would even find the murder weapon at the scene, a pistol stolen roughly two years prior. But missing entirely was one of the women's boyfriends, a man of many aliases who has been missing since that fateful Wednesday, alleged to still be hiding in plain sight...To learn more about Derrell Demon Brown, please view the following:https://www.usmarshals.gov/sites/default/files/media/document/15-Most-Wanted-Poster-Derrell-Brown.pdf Research, writing, hosting, and production by Micheal WhelanMusic composed and created by Micheal WhelanAdditional music includes "Exodus Glacier" by Jasnazima (outro) and "Unresolved Mysteries" By Ailsa Traves (podcast theme song, end credits)Learn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3266604/advertisement

It's episode #60 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Michigan Democrats continue working on clean and affordable energy bills in the state legislature. They must get some of these bills passed before the November adjournment date, or else everything will get pushed back until next year. The main goals of these bills are to make Michigan caborn-free by 2035 or 2040, pushing for strong energy efficient standards to help low income areas, and to hold DTE and Consumers Energy more accountable. Derrell Slaughter, Michigan Advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council returns to give an update on whether or not these bills will pass soon. I share a few observations on the new Republican Speaker of the U.S. House, Mike Johnson of Louisiana, and how he's not Vulgar MAGA, but he's Refined MAGA, as The Washington Post's Greg Sargent called it. I describe how corporate media have been working against the UAW during its strike against the Big Three Detroit Automakers. And I discuss how Michigan Republicans have no solutions to revamp our aging energy grid. Meanwhile, Democrats, who hold the majority in the legislature, are working to pass meaningful clean energy standards. Finally, in my Last Call, I push for Democrats to pass real transparency reform laws, which is what we Michiganders called for when two-thirds of us voted to pass Proposal 1 in 2022. Michigan has the worst record when it comes to government transparency and accountability. But the legislature appears to be trying its best to cut some corners, which is not what we voted for. Please, email me if you'd like to further discuss whatever I brought-up in the episode. And I'd appreciate it if you could subscribe, and give a Five Star review of the podcast as well! Take the battle to them! leftoflansing@gmail.com leftoflansing.com --Pat

Progressive changes continue in our state thanks to the Democratic majority in the state legislature as both the general and education budgets passed this week. These budgets provide significant funding boosts for K-12 spending, including more per-pupil funding and universal free breakfast and lunch. And the general budget provides more funding for roads, infrastructure, health care workers, the environment and more. Plus, Democrats repealed the awful "No Stricter Than Federal" law Republicans passed during the 2018 lame duck. Then, I speak with Durrell Slaughter, who is Michigan's clean energy advocate with the Natural Resources Defense Council, on a package of historic and bold clean energy and climate change bills Democrats have introduced in the state legislature, which have a goal of making the state carbon-free by 2035.. Mr. Durrell spoke in favor of these bills during a committee session. And he also talks about the importance of getting involved in local politics. My "Last Call" talks about how the President Biden's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act is providing high speed Internet access to 200,000 residents in Michigan, helping low income families. There's so much going on inside our state government, and much-needed changes making Michigan a better and more welcoming place to live. And it's all thanks to strong progressive, and popular, policies! Please, have a safe and great Fourth of July holiday weekend! leftoflansing@gmail.com
On this episode we meet Derrell Frazier, the lifelong Baltimore resident who grew up as the child of incarcerated parents and went on to run a highly successful campaign for city-wide office. Derrell talks about his early years being raised by a grandmother also raising nine other kids, the mentor who changed his life in middle school, and the many ways that he has found to serve the people of Baltimore over the years. In 2022, he threw his hat in the ring for a seat on the State Central Committee and found himself in a race with more than 20 other candidates; the top eight vote-getters would win seats on the committee. As a first-time candidate, Derrell came in 10th, just missing the cut to join the board. It was a remarkable outcome for a first-time candidate, and Derrell is clear that he is just getting started.

Over 200 years, Gonzaga has seen new course offerings, and clubs created to meet the needs and interests of students. As Black History Month continues, we celebrate this week, a little-known hero of Gonzaga, the African-American student who co-founded WZAG: Chuck Lewis ’77. How did Chuck’s father’s advice after a setback, inspire him? And what local TV station helped Chuck in those early days? We’ll also hear from Chuck's co-founder, Danny Costello '72, with his memories as a longtime WZAG moderator of the fun, and the challenges of those early days. Special guest, former Gonzaga faculty member, Fr. Mark Scalese,S.J., talks about his role in the evolution of WZAG in the early 90's, as it made the jump from club to class. Alums Dave Konschik '94 and John Guccion '92 add their appreciation for the Mark Scalese era. Finally, we catch up with recent graduate, Derrell Bouknight '15, who now works with CBS Sports Network. Derrell shares his WZAG memories, and experiences, and how the education at Gonzaga helped steer him into media as a career. But, the ripple effects of this "club" that evolved into a course, all started 46 years ago, with a curious Chuck Lewis '77. Chuck took his dad's advice and found an outlet for his talents and creativity. Special thanks to Dave Konschik '94 for his behind the scenes help on this Episode!
