Atrás quedo la generación que rapeaba sobre bases de viejos discos de funk y disco de los 70s con la ayuda de un DJ. En los 90s el Hip Hop creció y se volvió electrónico, maduró y hablaba sobre los dramas que vivían día a día por tener un color de piel distinto, se volvió contestatario. Comenzó su dominio en las listas americanas y se hizo escuchar en todo el mundo, artistas como MC Hammer que vendió más de 10 millones de copias, NWA que fueron los pioneros del Gansta Rap, el rap sexual de 2 Live Crew y fueron los primeros en tener que vender su álbum “As Nasty As They Wanna Be” solo a mayores de 18, la música festiva de DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, la letras políticas de Public Enemy, los Beatie Boys 3 judios blancos que se metieron en las listas de Rap y logrando el respeto de muchos artistas del Hip Hop. Durante esta década también vivimos la disputa de la costa Oeste y la Este, la primera con su Gangsta Rap domino las ventas y en las radios, Dr. Dre, Snoop “Doggy” Dog, Tupac Shakur, Warren G.
