What a tale these two old pals have to share with you. Ben Skinner and Chris Barton were born and raised right here in La Crosse. They fell in love with the restaurant world here in town and as their talents grew they moved to Minneapolis and then Seattle. But restaurants can be brutal places to work, and they each have the scars to prove it. So, they came back home and thought "Hey....why don't we put restaurant quality food in jars?". So was born Paulin's Provisions. If you like delicious food, bawdy laughter and straight forward social commentary, you'll love this conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons is recognized to stress the harms of human trafficking women, men, and children around the world experience. Efforts to address these crimes are strengthened through survivor leadership, research and education, and building resilient communities. In the recent release of the 2022 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report from the U.S. Department of States Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, 21 countries were upgraded a tier because of their increasing work to address human trafficking in their countries--a victory worth celebrating this World Day Against Trafficking in Persons! This year, we are highlighting the supply and demand of the market that drives labor trafficking and how businesses and corporations can combat human trafficking by analyzing their supply chains, implementing ethical labor practices, and building sustainable avenues of income and resources for employees. It is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons and our podcast has listeners in 148 countries. This is an important day for us. It's just me, Sandie Morgan, today to let you know that I'm taking a few weeks off in August, so Dave and I will return to our regular schedule on August 29th. In the meantime, let's celebrate the United Nations annual observance by joining forces with our movement's global partners as we study the issues, be a voice, and make a difference in ending human trafficking. Our latest episode, Shifting the Supply Chain Burden, with Justin Dillon, took a deep dive on some of the legislation that has been passed most recently, especially the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. It's a big step forward in our movement, but we've been looking at this issue for more than a decade on our podcast. So during this short break, we've put together a decade of ten episodes around the role of business in ending human trafficking. Just go to the website www.endinghumantrafficking.org and click on the link to browse these recommendations. You can start most recently with Episode 269, when Matt Friedman suggested how we can empower businesses to create a slave free world. And of course, one of our frequent podcast guests and former Ambassador John Cotton Richmond joined us for episode 267, The Intersection of Business and Human Rights. In Episode 266, we went to Ghana with Chris Field rescuing boys labor trafficked in the fishing industry. And back on episode 247, Ben Skinner gave us the high level look from a corporate change viewpoint in fast fashion on perspectives on transformation in labor trafficking. We brought Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner Cynthia Wittenberg on the podcast to talk to us about the role of Customs and Border Protection in disrupting supply chain forced labor. And back on 209,

Ben Skinner grew up with Jeremy Flores under the tutleage of Tom Carrol and Gary Elkerton. He was first sponsored by Quiksilver at eleven years old and was immediately put in to a grind by the “Sandhill Warrior” Rob Roland Smith, the legendary personal trainer employed by Quiksilver to train the brand's most promising young athletes in the 90's and early 00's, nicknamed for his interest in making groms run up and down sand dunes until until they fell over. Ben at the time was surfing shortboards and he was ripping. He was traveling to Morocco and winning contests. And then he switched. “I just got so frustrated on small days in England in weak waves, I wanted to surf every single day, and longboards let me do that.“ Born in England and raised inside pubs and breweries by parents in the hospitality industry, Ben is a 11X European Longboard Champion who, as a child, seems to have downplayed the wave quality in England. Today he rides incredible waves, some off them with barrels big enough to stand in, and all on surfboards 9 foot plus. You'll see video footage of these waves in the show notes of this episode.
Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Charles Ferguson, “Invisible Hands” is the first feature documentary to expose child labor and trafficking within the supply chains of the world's biggest companies. Filmed in six countries including India, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Ghana, it is a harrowing account of children as young as 6 years old making the products we use every day. The film marks the directorial debut of journalist Shraysi Tandon and features Nobel Peace Prize recipient Kailash Satyarthi, New York Times writer and two-time Pulitzer prize winner Nicholas Kristof, journalist Ben Skinner, author and activist Siddharth Kara and Columbia Law School professor Mark Barenberg. On Monday’s installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large,” Shraysi Tandon joins Leonard for a discussion of this deeply disturbing phenomenon.

This time I headed down to Newquay to speak to Ben Skinner, world-renowned longboarder, the man behind Skindog Surfboards and all round UK surf legend. Ben and the boys were super welcoming and after showing me around the factory we sat down and went back over his life and career. Up for discussion - the current state of longboarding, the ethos behind Skindog Surfboards, his impatience with people who try to limit what other people ride, and just why he was so pissed off about a recent article slating the state of UK surfing. Ben is forthright, funny, opinionated and all round good company, so this is a free-wheeling, entertaining chinwag on surfing and much more. Enjoy. Ben Skinner(Originally aired April 2009) Gabor Mate (Originally aired May 2011) These interviews pursue a world that just might work. That pursuit, however, demands looking honestly at the darker aspects of human behavior, and this week's interviews deal with slavery and addiction. In both cases, my guests draw on years of personal experience to frame their analyses and their proposed solutions. To those who say society's not actually making progress, many point to the fact that at least we've eliminated slavery. But sadly that is not the case. 143 years after passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and 60 years after Article 4 of the U.N.'s Universal Declaration of Human Rights banned slavery worldwide, there are more slaves right now than at any time in human history - 27 million. The new slavery, which focuses on big profits and cheap lives, is not about owning people in the traditional sense of the old slavery, but about controlling them completely. During the four years that BEN SKINNER researched modern-day slavery for his book, A CRIME SO MONSTROUS, he posed as a buyer at illegal brothels on several continents, interviewed convicted human traffickers in a Romanian prison and endured giardia, malaria, dengue and a bad motorcycle accident. But SKINNER says he's most haunted by his experience in a brothel in Bucharest, Romania, where he was offered a young woman with Down syndrome in exchange for a used car. Some might call addiction is a form of slavery. I am a long and consistent opponent of the war on drugs and of US policy toward illegal drugs and illegal drug users. I am also someone who advocates for a holistic view of reality, its challenges, and potential solutions. Holistic healing deals with the whole situation - mind, body, emotions, spirit and environment, treats root causes rather than symptoms, and treats as naturally and safely as possible. GABOR MATE, deals with the issues of drugs and addiction holistically. In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts proposes approaching addiction through an understanding of its biological and socio-economic roots.
The weather was at its best as the town along with holiday makers turned out in force to support the annual fundraiser. Steel Appeal played on the beach as families enjoyed picnics and watched the action in a Caribbean atmosphere This year’s event saw a footfall of over a thousand spectators and over 300 paddlers of all ages and abilities taking part in the 200m, 1km fun paddle and the1km relays, to do their bit to raise money for some of the 20 charities now supported by the Joe Way appeal. The sunset sessions kicked off with Ben Sutcliff playing on the harbour stage, followed by The Strawdogs and then finishing in the rowing club with Jethro Baines which was a great show case for the best of Cornish music. Matt Way said “five years ago we had no idea how we would cope with the loss of Joe. However in the middle of the beach watching the hundreds of paddlers, listening to the music, watching our volunteers and seeing the thousand plus spectators it became clear to me that you learn to live with the loss with the help of others and we are extremely lucky to have so much support”.
Surf and Music Gig raise money for Cornish Foundation The ETL international longboard competition was held for the second year running at Watergate Bay, the two star event on the tour was headlined by O’Neill and organized by local surfer Ben “Skindog” Skinner who has just returned from Ireland with the European title. The final saw a UK head to head with O’Neill team riders Skindog and Adam Griffiths battling it out in a close heat which saw Adam taking his first ETL win. Ben Skinner said “It’s been a great weekend although the conditions of the surf have been tough, all the sponsors of the event have done an amazing job and we have once again put on a great showcase for British surfing”. Ben skinner who is one of the ambassadors for the Joe Way Appeal which has raised £93,000.00 for 20 charities in the 3 years since Joe passed away also put together another Joe Way Appeal fundraising event to the weekend of surfing. The Phoenix Pub at Watergate hosted this years event and the line up was the best of Cornish music which saw Charlie Wingfield, Grey dog and Ben Sutcliff show the European visitors how vibrant the music and surf scene is in the UK. The money this year is being donated from Joe’s Appeal to the Matt Upsher foundation which was set up after the well know teacher and musician from Perranporth tragically died last year whilst surfing His Brother Tom spoke about his brother and introduced Grey Dog which is the Band his brother played with, Tom said "My brother had a soul that reached out to so many people, his passion and enthusiasm was infectious, and it is this spirit we hope to continue, with the work of the Matthew Upsher Foundation. We are delighted to have been invited to work with The Joy Way appeal, and are extremely thankful that the Foundation is the chosen beneficiary of tonight’s event. Its great to have the support of The Joe Way appeal, Ben Skinner and all of the people that have worked so hard to put together such a great event. It gives us all such a sense of positivity that we can come together and raise the awareness of the Foundation." Ben added “Matt taught me how to play the guitar and was a real soul surfer he is deeply missed so to be able to donate some money to his foundation is a real honour”. £1145.00 was raised with an auction and prize draw that saw great prizes from O’Neill Clothing and Wetsuits, Skinners ales, Perranporth signs, 100% organic and a local artist Martin Hawkes who donated a print on the day which was taken away by one of the French competitors. Matt Way Joe’s Dad said “It was a great night and we are really grateful for the generosity of all the Companies that gave such amazing prizes and the people who gave money. It was a really privilege to meet Tom and work with the musicians who all knew his brother. Steve Skinner did a great job with the auction and just as we thought it was all over a local guy donated £100 to have a surf lesson with Skindog”.
