In this episode of Fuel Your Drive, I sit down with Matt Friedman, co-founder of Wing Zone, to unpack one of the most inspiring entrepreneurship stories you'll hear. Matt shares how he and his business partner started Wing Zone with just $500 in a fraternity house kitchen, built it into a 100+ location franchise brand, and navigated the challenges of scaling, franchising, leadership, hiring, raising capital, and ultimately exiting the company after 27 years. We dive deep into the lessons every entrepreneur needs to hear—from surrounding yourself with the right people and finding mentors to overcoming setbacks, avoiding costly growth mistakes, and building a business that stands the test of time. If you're an entrepreneur, franchise owner, business leader, or anyone chasing a big vision, this episode is packed with real-world insights and hard-earned lessons you can apply immediately.
Four years ago, almost to the day of recording, Oliver Bullough was a guest on this show for the first time to discuss his concept of 'Moneyland'. This borderless virtual country where the wealthy go to keep their wealth beyond the reach of any government, any tax office, any voter. Between then and now, I've maintained interest on this thread. Nicholas Shaxson discussed on the pod the cancerous plumbing of the offshore world in Treasure Islands. John Christensen showed how that plumbing quietly corrodes culture and politics. Bill Browder shows where the abstraction becomes violence. Nathan Lynch showed how Australia is every bit as dirty as anywhere else, and Matt Friedman, just a few weeks ago, put a number on the human end of it: $236 billion a year in illicit profit from modern slavery.Oliver's latest book is Everybody Loves Our Dollars: How Money Laundering Won. His argument is bleak, precise, and very hard to wave away. We have spent decades and roughly $200 billion a year building an anti-money-laundering fortress, and by the best available estimates the share of the world economy being laundered hasn't moved since the 1990s. We get into why governments have failed so completely at this one. We follow the money where it actually goes: not just through banks, but through cash (central banks printing $100 bills faster than they can build factories), through crypto and stablecoins, and through the oldest trick of all — value hidden inside shipments of used cars, watches, oil, grain, the way the Medici did it in Florence. We talk about the scam compounds of Southeast Asia, where trafficked people are tortured into defrauding pensioners on the other side of the world, and how that horror connects — directly, traceably — to the very top of global power, through Tether, Cantor Fitzgerald, and a US Commerce Secretary's family. And underneath all of it, the real subject: the relationship between money and power, and what happens to democracy when the two become the same thing. Oliver's "offshore bandits" — elites who loot their own countries while living and banking somewhere else, feeling none of the consequences — are a darker upgrade on Mancur Olson's stationary bandit. It's a Moneyland story, and it's spreading. There are lighter turns too — Wright Patman, the forgotten Texan congressman who fathered anti-money-laundering law; Peter Pomerantsev and the propaganda war; Bill Browder before he was Bill Browder; and an unexpectedly lyrical detour to the walnut forests and white mountains of Kyrgyzstan.Oliver Bullough...Links Oliver Bullough BooksCurious Worldview SubstackPodcast Starter PacksInvestigative JournalistsOffshore Finance/Kleptocracy & Money LaunderingGeopolitics/Economics/Economic DevelopmentExplorers & AdventurersLeave a review on Apple or Spotify (nothing does more to help grow the show)

This podcast has returned to modern slavery three times now. Lisa Kristine showed us its face through her photography. Bruce Ladebu described what it actually takes to pull children out. And Matthew Friedman, in Episode 76, gave us the architecture: thirty-five years working across Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, the UN, and eventually the Mekong Club. That first episode opened with the story of an 11-year-old Nepalese girl in a Mumbai brothel who ran across the room, wrapped herself around Matt, and begged him to save her. He couldn't, that day. He came back with police and she was gone. This second conversation picks up in a deglobalising world. The USAID cuts have gutted sixty years of global anti-trafficking infrastructure. The $400 million available to address modern slavery has been halved. HIV clinics, maternal health programs, girls' education initiatives are all gone. And as Matt makes clear, the line from those cuts to a new trafficking victim is not abstract. It runs through hospitals, through debt, through desperation. This episode also goes somewhere I'm afraid I didn't communicate that well, the points of cultural judgement and critique. There's a story of a sixteen-year-old Bangladeshi girl, rescued after two weeks in a brothel, who was turned away at her own front door by a father who loved her because the shame she carried would make her siblings unmarriageable. That story sits at the centre of the hardest question in this conversation: when the cultural machinery enabling trafficking runs this deep, what can the outside world actually do about it? It's a delicate subject, I regret not treating it as such. $238 billion modern slavery generates annually flows through the same offshore plumbing this podcast has covered with Oliver Bullough and John Christensen. Matt explains how banks are already tracking it and how the Mekong Club is working with Interpol, crypto companies, and social media platforms to find it and cut it off. It's a pleasure to welcome Matt Friedman back to the podcast. In this episode, Tom Fox welcomes Matt Friedman, founder and CEO of The Mekong Club, to discuss his book “Awakening the Advocate,” which explains his career in the fight against human trafficking. Matt tells his journey through survivor/NGO stories, traces his personal journey from a shy child in Connecticut to 35 years of anti-slavery work across 35+ countries, and shows that ordinary people can become advocates. He assesses progress as limited relative to the scale of the problem (50 million in modern slavery; 110,000 helped; 6,000 convictions; $236B in profits vs. $400M, now $250M, to fight it), arguing that awareness is the main gap. He outlines how companies, especially banks, can start internally via leadership briefings, policies, awareness, targeted training, red flags, procurement review, and baseline assessments, linking efforts to ESG, business value, and reputational/regulatory risk. Matt also discusses AI's emerging role in detecting patterns across supply chains and transactions and emphasizes individual actions, pro bono support, and the importance of compliance work. Local media across America is in its most tumultuous moment in decades, and Detroit is at the center of it. From the end of the joint operating agreement between the Free Press and the News, to shifts in public media funding, to the chaos around how you watch the Tigers, Pistons, and Red Wings, there's a lot to sort through. I talk with longtime PR pro and media watcher Matt Friedman of Tanner Friedman Public Relations about what's really happening, what's at stake for Metro Detroiters, and why your media subscriptions matter more than ever. The Rundown: 01:56 - People are confused in today's fast-changing media landscape. 02:58 Detroit's JOA (Joint Operating Agreement) is dissolved and the Detroit News and Free Press are separate now. What does that mean? Matt walks through how joint operating agreements emerged in the 1980s to keep multiple daily papers alive, and how Detroit's JOA kept the News and Freep tied together on the business side while competing in the newsroom for decades. He explains why their recent split into fully separate business and news operations is such a big deal in a market many don't think is "big enough" to support two robust metro newsrooms. We also get into the financial pressures facing local media, how Pittsburgh has lost two papers recently, how the New York Times makes more money and more profit than all of the USAToday/Gannett papers combined, and more. 18:08 The state of PBS and Public Media today: In short, it's not dead. With federal funding clawed back through a budget rescission and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting dissolved, local stations now have to replace that money through philanthropy and memberships, which Detroit has managed so far — but smaller markets may not. 22:57 The local sports TV rights business is a mess right now. There's real uncertainty about how fans will watch first‑place teams if the parent of the regional sports network can't find a buyer, and that contingency planning is already underway. Plus, might we see some games on free TV? This was a conversation as a media nerd I was glad to have with someone who has a 360 degree view of the landscape, and I hope you get some value out of it. Thirty years ago, Matt Friedman, CEO and founder of The Mekong Club, worked as a senior USAID public health official across Asia, focused on education and prevention of HIV/AIDS in small rural communities. As part of Matt's work, he visited many shelters where he repeatedly heard the same themes of horror. His first interview was with a fifteen-year-old girl telling him she was sexually abused over seven thousand times. She did this for two years until she was forced to leave because she suffered from various diseases that turned customers away.Matt soon realised that, just as this young girl had been exploited for sex, millions more were being exploited across the world. This exploitation was happening in the sex industry but also permeates global supply chains, from factories to farms to fishing boats.Matt began to work in the United Nations in the anti-trafficking world, where he worked closely with the public and private sectors across Asia. During his tenure, he noticed a gap in engagement with the private sector in their anti-trafficking efforts. Not because they didn't want to, but because they feared being named or shamed for approaching a UN official to ask for help.As a result, Matt left the United Nations and started The Mekong Club in Asia's financial centre, Hong Kong, to provide a safe space for companies worldwide to work together to help identify and eliminate forced labour in the private sector. After 36 years, the Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) between the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News is dissolving at the end of the year. While they have had competitive newsrooms, the JOA meant their back-end operations like sales and payroll were consolidated. Now, they're breaking apart and we get into what it could mean and ways the papers could cut a path forward with Matt Friedman of Tanner-Friedman Public Relations. If we're honest, when most JOAs have ended, one of the papers eventually folded. But that doesn't mean they're doomed, and we talk about some strategies to find a way to not just survive, but thrive. This morning in Gaza, in a ceremony that was even more twisted than those that came before it, Hamas paraded four coffins, containing the dead bodies of four hostages who were killed in captivity, before handing them over to the Red Cross. Israel then received the remains of Oded Lifshitz, an 83-year-old peace activist abducted from his home in Kibbutz Nir Oz; and the bodies of the iconic young mother Shiri Bibas, and her boys, Kfir and Ariel, who were respectively 9 months old and 4 years old at the time of their abduction, also from Nir Oz, which lost a quarter of its residents on October 7, 2023. Shiri, Kfir and Ariel came to symbolize Hamas's brutality and the helplessness of the victims of October 7. Oded was also a symbol of the many men and women who had dedicated their lives to seeking peace with the Palestinians, and whose lives were brutally ended by Palestinians on that darkest of days. In a year of somber days, today is one of the more difficult ones we have experienced - here at Call Me Back, and as a nation. We are joined today to process this wrenching moment by a Call Me Back favorite: Matti Friedman, to help us understand what this day means for Israel, and how it will change us and the stories we tell ourselves about Israel and our hopes for peace. Just as he did across much of the country, Trump improved his standing among New Jersey voters, losing by only five points in what has been a staunchly blue state at the federal level for at least a generation. Matt Friedman, reporter for Politico New Jersey and author of the New Jersey Politico Playbook, reports on why so many voters in New Jersey were drawn to Trump, and what the red wave might mean for the state during the next four years.
This episode is a rare opportunity for #teamgwic to catch up in person at one of the key Ethics & Compliance events, the SCCE Compliance & Ethics Institute (CEI). CEI was in Grapevine, Texas, and, as usual, was a great experience. In this episode, Lisa, Hemma, Ellen and Sarah discussed their highlights from the event. The first keynote was from Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Nicole M. Argentieri, who announced revisions to the Evaluation of Corporate Compliance Programs, and the group touches on this and the significance of the changes and having them announced at SCCE. There will be much more to come on this topic. Each of the women discusses their favorite panels and some of the key takeaways they had, including discussions of DEI, controls, and how to work with Boards, as a few examples. They also sent their well-wishes to Nick Gallo, who was missed but, more importantly, is on the road to recovery. One of the best parts of the conference is the opportunity to network and share best practices, and the whole group thought this year's exhibit hall, and the format of the conference with longer breaks, allowed people to make great connections and have some in-depth discussions that don't always happen when you are moving so quickly to not make a panel or event. And the second morning keynote from Matt Friedman discussing his work in fighting human trafficking and modern slavery was moving and inspirational, a reminder of the importance of what we do every day with our due diligence and knowing our customers. All in all, it was a great week of connections, learning and providing so much optimism for the contributions that ethics and compliance professionals make, and to connect (or reconnect) with the amazing people in our community.
