The United States Trade Representative has called out 54 countries including New Zealand for failing to impose and effectively enforce a ban on imports made with forced labour. It claims US workers are competing globally on an unlevel playing field as a consequence. To address it, the US Trade representative is proposing an additional tariff of 12.5 percent on most New Zealand goods. Meanwhile a Modern Slavery Bill with cross-party support is already making its way through New Zealand's parliament. Sarah Cotgreave is on the board of Transparency International NZ, which has made a submission on the proposed law. She spoke with Lisa Owen.

One of the things that is affecting our society today is addiction and statistics say if there is not someone in your family that struggles with addiction then you know someone who is. It drives many of today's social ills such as Divorce, Crime, Neglect, Parent and Child Conflict, Poverty, and even Modern-Day Slavery. On this episode I have Zack Nielson on the podcast. I had Zack on the podcast just a few weeks back. One of things that Zack is passionate about is helping others overcome and heal from addiction and he does this by volunteering at a local support group. During the course of our conversation Zack and I cover how he came to be associated with the program helping folks overcome addiction, the physiology of addiction, what type of triggers exist that causes relapses and addictive behavior, the difference between guilt and shame, how the program that Zack volunteers at works, the principles that have proven to help people overcome addiction, and how the Savior and His Atonement works in helping folks overcome their pain and addiction.

In March 2021, police in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire made a discovery that would shock even seasoned officers. A woman in her early forties was found severely malnourished, terrified, and living in conditions described as prison-like inside an ordinary family home. Prosecutors later revealed that she had been brought into the home at just 16 years old and allegedly held captive for more than two decades. The woman responsible was 56-year-old Amanda Wixon.According to investigators, the victim was subjected to years of forced labor, violence, and extreme control. She was made to clean for hours daily, cook, run errands, and care for Wixon's ten children, all while being denied proper food, hygiene, medical care, and freedom. Prosecutors detailed repeated assaults, including strangulation and beatings. Meanwhile, Wixon claimed government benefits in the victim's name for years. Neighbors later said they hadn't seen the woman in years, unaware of what was happening behind closed doors.On January 21, 2026, at Gloucestershire Crown Court, Wixon was convicted of multiple charges, including forced or compulsory labor and false imprisonment. She denied the allegations and showed no remorse following the verdict. Today, the survivor is rebuilding her life: attending college and living with a foster family, but continues to cope with the lasting trauma of the abuse. Bonded labor, also known as debt bondage, remains a widespread form of modern slavery in parts of Asia, particularly in countries like India and Bangladesh. It typically occurs when individuals are forced to work to repay a debt under exploitative conditions, often with little or no wages and no clear end to their obligation. Entire families, including children, can be trapped in cycles of debt for generations, working in sectors like agriculture, textiles, and mining. Despite legal bans in many countries, weak enforcement and poverty continue to fuel this human rights violation. Cultural Survival spoke to Urmila Chaudhary (Tharu) to find out more. The Super Bowl is one the largest sporting events in the country. Tens of thousands will flock to the stadium and millions will watch from home. However, at events like these, it is essential we not only keep track of the game, but also, the potential victims of human trafficking that are most vulnerable at these large gatherings. In fact, every year 50 million people are trafficked somewhere in the world for either labor or sex. Joining Gloria on “The Gloria Purvis Podcast” is Sr. Anne Victory, a board member at U.S. Catholic Sisters Against Human Trafficking who has led efforts against human trafficking for over a decade. According to the U.S. Sisters Against Human trafficking, this crime, “occurs when a trafficker uses force, fraud or coercion to control another person for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex acts or soliciting labor or services against his/her will.” Sr. Anne describes the most common circumstances in which people get trafficked, profiles of traffickers, and what to look out for. If you suspect someone is being trafficked, please call (888) 373-7888. Even if you're not certain, Sr. Anne encourages you to report what you see and leave the investigation with local law enforcement who are specially trained for these cases: “just know that they'd rather have you report it and save someone's life than be wrong.” While the topic of human trafficking is dark, Sr. Anne continues to find hope in her work to end it. “I think one of the ways that I keep the faith is I've seen the difference since when we started fifteen years ago working on this.
