Their enthusiasm for the film is palpable, making it clear that this isn't just a retelling but a heartfelt exploration of what it means to create and nurture life. Finally, the duo wraps up with a look at the latest adaptation of The Running Man, directed by the ever-stylish Edgar Wright. Kevin shares his thoughts on the film, highlighting how it strays from its action-heavy origins to deliver a more faithful interpretation of Stephen King's novel. He dishes on the character of Ben Richards, played by Glenn Powell, and how the film's societal critiques are just as relevant today as they were when the book was penned. Despite mixed reviews, Kevin finds the film to be an exhilarating ride, filled with action, humor, and just enough heart to keep the audience engaged. With Edgar Wright's signature visual style and clever dialogue, the film promises to be a thrilling experience, even if it doesn't quite reach the highs of Wright's earlier works. This episode is a delightful mix of pop culture exploration, genuine enthusiasm, and the kind of insightful commentary that keeps listeners coming back for more.Takeaways: In this episode, Kevin and Andy dive deep into the latest buzz in geek culture, covering new shows and films like 'Flibus' and 'Frankenstein', while blending humor and...

The Running Man and The Long Walk In the late 70's Stephen King was still a ways away from being a household name; he had released Carrie, Salem's Lot and The Shining and his star was certainly on the rise... but he wanted more. That "more" came in the form of a pen-name that would allow him to try different ways of telling stories: Richard Bachman. Under this name he wrote 4 novels from 1977 to 1982 before his ruse was discovered. This podcast we are reviewing the adaptations of two of those books; The Long Walk from 1979 and The Running Man from 1982. This is the second attempt at an adaptation of The Running Man and this one contains almost 98% less Arnold Schwarzenegger.  Are they trudging to the finish line or do they barrel along at a breakneck pace? Join in with Dion, Jill and Quinny for their rambling and occasionally sprinting thoughts on these two thematically similar but structurally opposite films. Synopsis - The Running Man  In the near future, "The Running Man" is the top-rated show on television, a deadly competition where contestants must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins. Desperate for money to save his sick daughter, Ben Richards is convinced by the show's ruthless producer to enter the game as a last resort. Ratings soon skyrocket as Ben's defiance, instincts and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite, as well as a threat to the entire system. Arnold Schwarzenegger in a yellow jumpsuit, a murderous game show, and more terrible puns than should be legal – this week we're diving into The Running Man (1987).Set in the far-flung future of… 2017, the film drops Arnie into a fascist police state where the government keeps the masses quiet with a wildly popular TV bloodsport. Framed as the “Butcher of Bakersfield,” helicopter pilot Ben Richards is forced onto The Running Man, a gladiatorial game show hosted by the gloriously slimy Damon Killian. Contestants are hunted by cartoonishly lethal “Stalkers” – Subzero, Buzzsaw, Dynamo, Fireball and Captain Freedom – while the state-run network lies, edits, and fakes everything to keep the ratings high.We break down:The dystopia that arrived on time: State propaganda, rigged media, and how close this feels to modern reality TV and news spin.Arnie at full one-liner power: From exploding collars to chainsaw crotch kills, we go through the kills, the quips, and which puns are genuinely elite and which are plain zero. The Stalkers as 80s boss fights: Subzero's razor-wire demise, Buzzsaw's split decision, Dynamo's opera-singing sex pest energy, and Fireball's jet-pack nonsense.Killian and the cult of TV personalities: Why Richard Dawson nails the smarmy game-show host, and how the film weaponises studio audiences and phone-in contests. From Stephen King to Saturday-night carnage: How this loose adaptation trashes the bleak Richard Bachman novel, leans into gaudy satire, and still manages to feel weirdly ahead of its time with doctored footage and media manipulation. If you grew up on 80s action, misremember this as a Verhoeven movie, or just want to hear three dads argue over whether this is genius satire or glorious trash, this one's for you.Hit play to hear us revisit exploding neck collars, terrible future fashion, and why, for all its flaws, The Running Man is still an easy strong recommend. You can now text us anonymously to leave feedback, suggest future content or simply hurl abuse at us. While audiences experience this fresh take on Stephen King's dystopian thriller, we thought it was the perfect time to revisit our deep dive into the 1987 Schwarzenegger classic that first brought this dark vision of reality TV to the screen. Whether you're a longtime fan or discovering the original after seeing the new version, join us for this exploration of spandex, explosions, and some of Arnold's most memorable one-liners.Arnold Schwarzenegger Meets Dystopian Game ShowsWelcome to this episode of The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast! Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell as they tackle The Running Man (1987), Arnold Schwarzenegger's campy dystopian thriller where convicted criminals fight for their lives on America's most popular game show. Set in a totalitarian 2017 where the economy has collapsed and reality TV has become bloodsport, this movie delivers exactly what you'd expect: explosions, terrible one-liners, and an absurd amount of spandex-clad dancers. From Sub-Zero to Plain-ZeroKrissy and Nathan dive deep into the film's bizarre logic, questioning everything from head-exploding collars to the geography of the deadly game arena. They discuss how The Running Man predicted our current era of fake news and manipulated media—making it surprisingly more relevant today than when it was released. The hosts analyze Arnold's performance as Ben Richards, a wrongfully accused helicopter pilot who refuses to massacre civilians and ends up forced into the deadliest game show ever created. They debate whether his character is supposed to be likable (spoiler: he's kind of an a-hole to everyone) and celebrate Richard Dawson's MVP performance as the mustache-twirling villain Damon Killian. The conversation explores the film's kinship with other dystopian classics like RoboCop and Demolition Man, highlighting how it fits into that late-'80s trend of criticizing Reaganomics through sci-fi satire. Nathan and Krissy particularly enjoy dissecting the various "stalkers"—from chainsaw-wielding Buzzsaw to the singing, electrocuting Dynamo—and debate which of Arnold's infamous one-liners actually lands. They also can't help but wonder about the logistics: How do contestants actually win without killing stalkers? Why are the Running Man dancers given so much screen time? And how did the resistance set up headquarters inside the game arena?Additional Thoughts:The movie earns bonus points for "The Justice Department, Entertainment Division" and parody shows like "The Hate Boat" and "Climbing for Dollars"Jesse Ventura's Captain Freedom has the second-biggest character arc in the film (which isn't saying much)The crowd's ability to flip loyalties on a dime strains credibility, even for a ridiculous action movieNathan gives it a 7 out of 10 (but warns first-time viewers will probably rate it lower)The film failed the "Rocket Test"—Krissy's son bailed halfway through his first viewingFinal VerdictBoth hosts agree that The Running Man isn't objectively great, but it's undeniably fun—the kind of movie that gets better with repeat viewings as you embrace the camp. Nathan describes it as a "picante lime potato chip" that you have to get addicted to first. For deep cut recommendations, Nathan suggests Death Race 2000 (1975) as the perfect double feature, while Krissy recommends marathon-watching all four Expendables movies for similar over-the-top action glory.Want more Most Excellent 80s Movies content?Visit TruStory FM to explore The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast and other great shows. Most actors are lucky to be part of a single major film franchise over the course of their career. However, in just five years, Katy O'Brian scored roles in three of the biggest franchises of all time — Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Mission: Impossible. Yet another jaw-dropping and very well earned acting feat? Just a few months after Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning hit theaters, O'Brian had not one, not two, not three, but four major releases debut — Queens of the Dead, Christy, Maintenance Required, and now Edgar Wright's adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man.O'Brian plays Jenni Laughlin in the film, one of three people selected to participate in The Network's most popular and most dangerous game show, The Running Man. The risk is high, but so is the reward. If Laughlin, Glen Powell's Ben Richards, or Martin Herlihy's Jansky manage to evade McCone (Lee Pace) and The Hunters for 30 days, they win a whopping billion New Dollar reward. The odds of that happening? Mighty slim given no one's ever won The Running Man, but producer Dan Killian (Josh Brolin) ensures their pursuit of that jackpot has sky-high entertainment value every single step of the way, even if it means putting the contestants' lives at greater risk or manipulating his audience. With The Running Man now playing in theaters nationwide, O'Brian returns to Collider Ladies Night after first making an appearance on the “Pre-Party” edition of the show for the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and then being part of the first-ever live Ladies Night at San Diego Comic Con in celebration of Twisters. This time around, not only does O'Brian break down her experience playing “chaos personified” in The Running Man, but she also looks back on the last five years and reveals which projects opened new doors, and which ones didn't boost her star in this industry as much as you might expect. Seveda film kar kliče po iskanju podobnosti z današnjim časom, še posebno s stališča družbe nadzora, razredne delitve, socialnih krivic in obsedenosti z medijskim oblikovanjem resničnosti oziroma z resničnostnimi šovi samimi.

You might remember the Arnie version from 1987, but Wright's is a refreshed take starring very angry action man Glen Powell. Edgar and Simon talk action classics, staying on Arnie's good side, and why Stephen King called the film ‘Die Hard for our time'. In her usual out-there style, it follows a troubled teenage girl who returns home with a mysterious tattoo, amidst a terrifying bloodborne epidemic. And from Hollywood, ‘Now You See Me: Now You Don't', the latest entry in the slick magician‑heist franchise... which has left Mark wishing it would do a disappearing act.

I'm still here, ya sh*t-eaters! Edgar Wright's adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man runs into cinemas in a few days but I had the lucky opportunity to see it early at a mystery screening! I am a huge Edgar Wright fan; I love so many of his movies but I'll admit, I was maybe a little down on him after the very disappointing Last Night in Soho. That was a film I was highly anticipating but was pretty let down by the diretion the narrative took in the backhalf, even if I loved the cast and a lot of aesthetics of the film. The Running Man, though, looked like a return to the fun I love in most of my favorite Edgar Wright movies - and the early reviews definitely indicated that I was correct about that gut reaction. The future isn't sleek or utopian; it's loud, televised, and brought to you by your favorite corporate sponsors. In Edgar Wright's high-voltage new film, “The Running Man,” entertainment has literally become a blood sport. Based on Stephen King's 1982 novel, this isn't your father's dystopia; it's a world where survival ratings matter more than life itself, and one wrong move can make you viral in all the wrong ways. Glenn Powell stars as Ben Richards, a man framed, hunted, and transformed into TV's latest disposable hero. It's a punchy, adrenaline-fueled reinvention from a filmmaker who loves turning chaos into choreography. Wright trades the candy-coated energy of “Baby Driver” and “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” for something grittier and sweatier, a survival thriller that feels uncomfortably close to our algorithmic present. It's wickedly funny, politically sharp, and unmistakably his, even as it veers into darker, nastier terrain.READ MORE: ‘A House of Dynamite': Noah Oppenheim On Real-Time Nuclear Horror, Collaborating With Kathryn Bigelow, His ‘Jack Ryan' Film & More [The Discourse Podcast]

Whitey and Dan are back in the saddle for another dive into Arnold Schwarzenegger's golden era with their The Running Man (1987) Review, a dystopian action flick that predicted the rise of reality TV and the cult of celebrity with eerie accuracy. It's big, it's loud, it's absurdly 80s, and the boys are here for every neon-lit minute of it.Released in the same year as Predator, The Running Man often sits in Arnie's shadow catalogue, but this week Whitey and Dan make the case that it deserves far more love. The film, adapted from a Stephen King novel (written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman), throws viewers into a violent future where convicted criminals fight for survival on a televised game show, because nothing says prime-time entertainment like watching people get chainsawed on live TV.From the opening massacre in Bakersfield to Ben Richards' first "I'll be back" moment, Whitey and Dan take listeners on a nostalgia-soaked journey through the blood, the banter, and the bad outfits. They break down the stalkers, Buzzsaw, Sub-Zero, Fireball, Dynamo, and Captain Freedom and debate which death scene gets the best (and most ridiculous) send-off. Spoiler: chainsaws and balls don't mix.Along the way, the boys give Richard Dawson his due credit as Damon Killian, the sleaziest game show host since, well, himself. As Whitey points out, Dawson essentially plays an exaggerated version of his Family Feud persona, a charismatic creep who can charm the crowd while stabbing them in the back. Dan draws parallels between modern-day media culture and the movie's grim predictions of audience addiction, fake news, and manufactured heroes, which feel alarmingly close to home. There's plenty of banter too: stories about watching the film with their kids, reminiscing about the VHS days, and of course, a classic tangent on Australian childhoods versus American movie myths. Whitey marvels at Arnie's physical prime, the perfect blend of muscle and movie-star charm, while Dan compares the Austrian Oak's 1987 aesthetic to "a bag of walnuts, Arnie" in Predator. They even give props to the underrated soundtrack by Harold Faltermeyer and the bold (if slightly confusing) set design that feels part Blade Runner, part Rollerball fever dream. The Film School for F-Wits segment delves into dystopian cinema, with Dan running through ten classics that share DNA with The Running Man, including Demolition Man, Gattaca, Children of Men, and 1984. Expect tangents, trivia, and typical Morgs-level shade directed at absent co-hosts.As always, the boys bring the laughs with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. The good? Arnie's comedic timing and Richard Dawson's deliciously slimy performance. The bad? The script's dodgy one-liners, including the immortal “Subzero… now plain zero." The ugly? The shiny Lycra jumpsuits that make everyone look like they've escaped from a Eurovision rehearsal. It's vintage Born to Watch: irreverent, nostalgic, and filled with 80s love. Whether you're an Arnie completist or just here for the banter, this episode proves that The Running Man still runs circles around most modern action flicks.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONShould The Running Man be ranked among Arnie's all-time classics? Did this 1987 gem actually predict the rise of reality TV? She stars alongside Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Joe Dempise (Game of Thrones) and Michael Socha (The Gallows Pole). Currently gracing the Almeida stage in ALMA MATTER, she previously starred alongside James Norton in the award-winning A LITTLE LIFE in London's West End. The Running Man is one of the darker stories to escape the mind of Stephen King. Originally published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, the story follows Ben Richards as he attempts to evade deadly stalkers in order to win a boatload of cash in order to save his sick family. The Arnold Schwarzenegger movie adaptation is pretty different, but both interpretations of the material ended up being strangely prescient.

I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1987 dystopian cyberpunk action film, The Running Man  – directed by Paul Michael Glaser, written by Steven de Souza, based on the novel by Stephen King, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse THE BODY Ventura, and Richard Dawson. In a dystopian America, a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts, runners, must battle killers for their freedom. This movie absolutely rocks! It's one of Arnold's better films that no one really talks about. The dystopian cyberpunk vibes are high on this bad boy, as Ben Richards, the Butcher of Bakersfield, must survive a rigged TV game show that has captured the hearts and minds of the future America of 2017. Chased by “stalkers”, the game show contestants can earn their freedom and get a pardon, if they don't die first. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Synopsis: Arnold Schwarzenegger is running for his life in the high-tech futuristic action-adventure The Running Man. Co-starring Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Dweezil Zappa, Mick Fleetwood, Jim Brown, Jesse “The Body” Ventura and, in a critically acclaimed performance, Family Feud host Richard Dawson. The year is 2019. Television is now ruling people's lives. In the 21st Century, the most popular “audience participation” game show is “The Running Man” - where convicts can win pardons instead of “parting gifts”, by defeating murderous henchmen known as “stalkers”. The stalkers haven't had much of a challenge lately... until Ben Richards came along. Wrongly convicted of slaughtering 1500 innocent people, Richards is the next contestant to fight for his life... and his freedom. When Running Man host Damon Killian says “Come on down!”, be prepared to pay with your life! But Ben Richards isn't going down without a fight. Off Schwarzenegger goes into the burned-out sections of Los Angeles to face four of Killian's ace stalkers: Subzero, wielding his razor-sharp hockey sticks; Buzzsaw, the maniacal motorcycle-riding slasher; Dynamo, practicing his deadly electric shock treatment; and Fireball with his mighty flame-throwing arsenal.
