Cathy Louise has been teaching Ashtanga Yoga for 31 years. Her first teacher was Beryl Bender Birch, who she did a two-year apprenticeship with in New York in the late 1980s. Cathy Louise's early studies with Beryl still inform her teaching today. Cathy Louise met Pattabhi Jois during his first visit to New York and received his blessing to teach Ashtanga in 2000. Known for her transformative hands-on adjustments, Cathy Louise's teaching style also owes much to John Scott. In the late 1990s, she assisted John in his Mysore classes in London and then inherited her own Mysore style classes at Astanga Yoga London. While in London she taught vinyasa yoga at Triyoga, did a year-long apprenticeship in Pregnancy Yoga with Lynne Pinette, and met Nancy Gilgoff who was pivotal in empowering Cathy Louise as a female Ashtanga teacher. Cathy Louise's Pregnancy and Mom & Baby classes draw on her experience as a mother of three. In her Ashtanga classes too, she openly shares her journey as a woman so students may learn how best to adjust the practice of yoga in all stages of their lives. Perimenopause is the time before menopause. A woman's hormone levels start to change causing symptoms like: Irregular menstrual cycles – ovulation becomes less regular. Flow can be lighter or heavier Hot flashes – hormone changes can start to create hot flashes. Sleep problems – due to hot flashes or “night sweats”. Mood changes – hormone levels change meaning some women have more mood swings, irritable. Decreased fertility – ovulation becomes less regular so it's harder to conceive. Changes in sexual feeling – less interested in sex. Loss of bone density – with lower oestrogen bones lose density faster than you can replace bone. Changes in cholesterol levels – lower oestrogen levels can make you start to have “high cholesterol”. Other symptoms can be vaginal dryness, weight gain, slow metabolism, thinning hair, and dry skin. Menopause is when you have not had a menstrual cycle for at least a 12-month period. Menopause can happen in your 40s to 50s. The average age in the US of menopause is 51 years old. Symptoms can continue as with “perimenopausal” symptoms, and you can also experience: Fatigue, difficulty concentrating or memory loss, dizziness, weight gain, incontinence, bloating, changes in body odour, depression and anxiety, breast pain, headaches, joint pain, burning tongue, muscle tension, dry itchy skin, osteoporosis, gum problems, anxiety, brittle nails, tingling in the legs/arms. Early Menopause or Premature Menopausecan happen any time before the usual age of 40s-50s. Early menopause can come with having a hysterectomy (removal of ovaries), chemotherapy (cancer treatment) or stress. It's important if you have early menopause that you have a balanced diet and take medical advice to make sure you remain healthy.

What makes someone electric? In today's episode we're going to find out. Stan Woodman joins us in conversation. He has that beautiful esprit de corps that comes from overcoming adversity with a team in fellowship, even in the face of great tragedy there's still Love in the group. Good parenting does that. Stan has a confidence in him that he is loved and will always be loved. Not in an arrogant way whatsoever, but as a man who loves all beings and naturally sees Love within them. Not many men grow up saying that what they want most from the world is to be a dad. This is a testament to his gentle and kind nature. As a very young man, Stan conceived a daughter, who was given up for adoption. His story is so inspiring, in that, over the years that followed, a relationship developed between them and she became very much a part of his life. Stan was once Beryl Bender Birch's apprentice and he assisted her as a travelling teacher. This was his introduction to the world of yoga. A beginning only imagined by most of us! Some people say that we, as Westerners, will never grow to be more than gym teachers in the field of yoga; But, even with that, this practice somehow does work, in a spiritual way, to make us more compassionate and integrated. If we do the work. “I want to be a kinder, more loving, compassionate human, so this is why I do and will continue to practice and teach Ashtanga Yoga. I have great respect for all the teachers of this lineage who have come before me, stand alongside me, and have yet to come." - Stan Woodman FIND OUT MORE ABOUT STAN: INSTAGRAM I WEBSITE - ashtangayogastan.com JOIN THE FINDING HARMONY INNER CIRCLE MEMBERSHIP TO LISTEN TO BONUS EPISODES! Very often our podcasts are a coming together of old friends, conversations which sometimes unravel into talking about something funny, strange, a little bit weird, or “culty,” just like we would be sitting at a chai-stand in Mysore, India. Sometimes though, we call on a person who looms much larger in our minds, a giant in our industry, whose life experience, we know, has fundamentally altered ours; just by the sheer courage of the choices made in their era. Beryl Bender Birch is one of those people. Without her, and without her books, Power Yoga and Beyond Power Yoga, how could we possibly “be here now” doing any kind of yoga at all? Yet, so magically and with great kismet, we find out that Beryl, and others like her, are just like you and I. That they came before us is an accident of birth only. The richness of their experiences mirror our own. Beryl told it like it was, and continues to tell it like is, and we were thrilled to have her acerbic sense of humor and enjoyed her salt-of-the-earth presence. Beryl tells us about meeting, traveling, and meditating with her spiritual guide, Munishree Chitrabhanu, a Jain monk. She also speaks candidly about Pattabhi Jois' indiscretions while teaching in the classroom, as well as how she began her Ashtanga yoga studies with Norman Allen in NYC. You'll hear finally, Beryl and Russell recount a time sitting with the Mindful Congressional Rep. Tim Ryan in San Francisco and being publicly harangued for cultural appropriation. With some side bars on the value of mind altering substances, Beryl congratulated Russell on being sterile… ‘a good start,' she said, ‘on our population and environmental problems.' This interview is provocative, historical, and sprinkled with a bit of magic. We were absolutely blown away when Robert Moses related the current pandemic of the Coronavirus to a powerful transformative goddess, Ma Corona Devi. In this way, we most certainly felt like it was a blessing of the Mother Goddess Corona Devi, that this esteemed teacher of yoga, Robert Moses, came on our podcast to share with us personal stories from his incredible lifetime on the spiritual path. Starting with being born in South Africa into a Jewish family, growing up during apartheid, to traveling through Europe in the 60's on an architectural tour in a secondhand VW bus plastered with Lakshmi posters, and moving to Israel to become a renunciate Swami with the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Organization. He was first introduced to the method of Ashtanga yoga, as taught by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, by the pioneer Norman Allen, in 1982. Norman had called him gruffly out of the blue, after twelve years of living in India. The rules of the Sivananda “Yoga Ranch” were that Robert was to teach Norman, until it became clear that Norman had something different to teach Robert. Robert began practicing with Norman in a small loft in NYC, along with another pioneer, Beryl Bender-Birch, who was learning this novel style of asana — something that was completely foreign to North America at the time. Robert Moses was the first person to show Derek Ireland Surya Namaskara, which started him on his journey to Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, and Derek in turn, taught John Scott and Hamish Hendry, propagating the Asthanga yoga community in Europe. Robert Moses shares with us the wisdom he's learned about holding strong to the middle path, staying true to oneself, and connecting to something greater. I'm sure you will find this interview as historically fascinating and personally enlightening as we did. If you are interested in joining Robert Moses for one of his Pranayama Classes, his course on Vedanta or Hatha Yoga, he will be beginning a new session of classes THIS WEEK! In one of our more philosophical episodes, host Beryl Bender Birch and John Campbell answer questions from our audience about choice, change and faith in the practice of yoga. Which is altogether fitting, given that John is not only a master Ashtanga teacher, but also the founder of the University of Virginia’s Contemplative Sciences Center, where he teaches Religious Studies. Join us as we explore how all systems of yoga practice can help us question our sense of self in ways that can lead to a more comprehensive set of choices. Or, as John says in answer to a question from Rob in Colorado, “This is not about becoming an automaton…The very act of doing yoga is a fairly radical choice.” When Trish from Boston asks John about how our practices change as we age, John describes how the practice that you do has to be appropriate to whatever circumstances you are in, but that “freedom and the awakening of enlightenment only happens within structure.” Finally, when Sarah in Maryland asks about the role of faith in yoga, John talks about the tension between “the effort to get somewhere that you ought to get and the recognition that there’s nowhere to go.” And how “Every moment that you wake up and do yoga and you don’t really know if it’s worth it, there’s faith involved there.”
