Today, I interview one of my biggest mentors, Elena Brower. I ask her about the tension many of us feel as yoga teachers: How do we honor our own personal practice (which may be morphing away from the style of yoga we're known for), while still meeting our students' where they are? How do we not feel pigeon-holed by a certain technique or style? And trust our own voice? Listen in as we discuss:
Kia Miller and Elena Brower discuss Elena's continuing journey into her Zen practice, covering her methodology and some key insights that the practice has brought her. They discuss how their spiritual practices have led them to positively embrace imperfection, and steer away from perfectionism. They discuss the challenges and rewards of meditation, and how to bring a fresh perspective to one's practice. Elena emphasizes the importance of self-compassion and shares techniques for practicing nonviolent communication, both internally and with others. Kia and Elena reflect on how their practices have evolved over the years and what it means to accept and grow from one's imperfections. They delve into the role of teaching and how to connect with and inspire students in the ever-evolving journey of spiritual and personal development. As “Elena says in the interview, “The best celebration of your humanity is to sit and be present with what is."You'll come away from the episode with insightful strategies for integrating meditation and mindfulness into daily life.Key Takeaways for this Episode00:00 Meet Elena Brower02:13 Elena's journey into zen practice06:04 The simplicity of zen practice08:41 Letting go and cultivating compassion12:35 Nonviolent communication and acknowledging humanity25:04 Dropping negative thoughts32:46 Embracing imperfection on the spiritual path36:49 Self-compassion and self-acceptance40:29 The evolution of Kia and Elena's personal practices43:20 Gratitude and love as healing forcesLinks:Kia Miller: Website | InstagramElena Brower: Website | InstagramGlo: Website | InstagramGLO classes:Practice with KiaPractice with Elena

Kia and Jason talk about how they apply the principles learned on the mat to everyday life. They wrap up their conversation by discussing the value of staying curious, continually learning and innovating as teachers, seeking new challenges. In this introspective podcast episode, I explore the deep layers of self-love, self-care, and self-awareness. Reflecting on my recent yoga experiences and encounters with insightful teachers, I explore the profound question from Poet Andrea Gibson: Is my attention on loving, or is it on who isn't loving me? I discuss the societal pressures around beauty and aging, acknowledging the fine line between self-care practices and self-love. Drawing from personal experiences and lessons, I invite listeners to consider the transformative power of cultivating self-love as a foundation for all other aspects of life.Key Takeaways:Attention on Love: Reflect on whether your focus is on love, solutions, and self-compassion, or on who isn't loving you or the problems, allowing for mindfulness in the present moment.Cultivating the Witness: Practice moving beyond thought, connecting with your essential self, the unflinching consciousness within you, fostering stability and self-awareness.Embracing Joy: Challenge the ability to experience natural joy without relying on external substances or circumstances, recognizing it as a profound aspect of self-discovery.Self-Care vs. Self-Love: Question the intention behind self-care practices, discerning if they stem from a place of self-love or societal pressures, emphasizing the importance of self-love as the foundation of well-being.Starting with Self-Love: Prioritize self-love as a prerequisite for happiness and contentment, understanding that external changes or practices might enhance but not replace the core of self-acceptance and love.I mention the episode of Elena Brower's podcast with Andrea. Today we're talking about menopause and creativity. In Alexandra and Sjanie's menopause book, Wise Power, they speak about there being an ‘altar' at the heart of the inner sanctum of menopause, “the point of deepest dark in which you experience the hot breath of your inner critic on the back of your neck, and you turn to fully face it.”They go on to speak about how this powerful moment forges a new level of authority, a kind of authority that can be incredibly fertile ground for your creative process. This has been true for my guest Elena Brower. She is prolifically creative; the author of several books, a new volume of poetry, and the creator of yoga programmes, paintings and more, alongside running a successful business. She's also passionate about re-writing the cultural menopause story (she recently interviewed Alexandra and Sjanie for an exciting menopause upcoming event - more about that soon…).We explore:- How she's experiencing a kind of creative re-birth a year and a half after her last period - a new kind of harmony happening, which is allowing her to think and make things that she's never considered before.- Why older women believe in themselves more and care less about what others think and how it feels to be catching glimpses of a full acceptance of herself in this phase of life.- Her current greatest creative challenges, and how she's navigating them. ---The doors are now open for our Your Creative Power course, starting in September. In today's episode of Talk Nerdy To Me, we're going to dive into the intersection of science and spirituality, the autonomic nervous system, why stress isn't actually as bad as you think, and one of the most powerful practices you can do right now to support your brain and body. Today I'm talking with Kristin Leal: a teacher, lecturer and body worker who travels the world with her MetaAnatomy trainings passionately sharing about the miracle of the human body and the liberating potential of both movement and stillness. She is the author of the books "The Yoga Fan” and “MetaAnatomy- A Modern Yogi's Practical Guide to the Physical and Energetic Anatomy of Your Amazing Body” which was called "smart and sassy" by Elena Brower and "a luscious resource" by Rod Stryker. Teaching for nearly 30 years, she has graduated thousands of teachers through her own 200 and 300-hr teacher trainings along with working for in person and virtual yoga training programs around the world. In 2021, she was invited to join the anatomy advisory team at Yoga Journal Magazine. These days you can find her in her new home in London, England writing books, studying in a nearby park full of swans and teaching virtually and producing offerings in her faux fur lined-plant and bone filled home yoga studio.Episode Resources: V.S. Ramachandran Quote: “The human brain is without any doubt the most complexly organized form of matter in the universe. The brain is made up of 100 billion nerve cells or neurons. Someone has calculated that the number of possible permutations and combinations of brain activity exceeds the number of elementary particles in the universe. And this gives you some idea of the staggering complexity one is faced with in trying to understand the functions of this mysterious organ. An english episode on parenting with beautiful Elena Brower. She offers a combination of innovative in-person and online mentorship programs designed to help the modern individual ascend and align.Heather was first drawn to explore the illuminative world of yoga through meditation and prayer, which cultivated a passion for delving into the many facets of this ancient practice. As a result, her teachings work within the framework of our daily lives."I appreciate that every moment is an opportunity to understand ourselves and press the parameters of our growth and feel into the sparkling vastness all around."As a registered ERYT 500 teacher with over 1000 hours of training, she currently mentors individuals privately and in small groups. Her influences are an eclectic mix ranging from Jess Freeman, Ally Bogard, Tanis Fishman, Lindsey Park, Kellyann Vass, Jesse Johnson, Vanessa Jean Boscarello Ovens, Elena Brower, and more.I draw inspiration from the abundance of life in the outdoors where I live in Fernie, British Columbia."Our strength should not act as a shield but rather give the power to open our hearts and encourage compassion and integrity to spread into our lives and communities". In this episode, Dean Newlund and Heather Ivany discuss:How to guide people effectivelyAccessing the home withinExploring other optionsWhat to do with resistance Key Takeaways:People connect to consciousness in different ways. As a teacher, a guide, or a coach, if you impose onto somebody how you think their spirituality should be, then you're not helping them. The answer is within. You can be anywhere on the planet and access your "home within" - once you practice accessing this regularly and start enjoying it, it creates a pleasure center within your brain. Don't get discouraged when you "fail" at any spiritual or mindfulness practice, but take this chance to explore other options that might work for you. Invite resistance, embrace it, and challenge it. It's necessary for the process of growth and in knowing yourself more. "So often we love to be told how to have an experience outside of this 3D form… Our connection to consciousness is personal, and how we choose to... might be very different from how someone else connects to consciousness." — Heather Ivany Click on this link to get a course from Heather Ivany for FREE: https://www.heatherivany.com/freecourse See Dean's TedTalk "Why Business Needs Intuition" here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I Connect with Heather Ivany: Website: https://www.heatherivany.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/heatherivanyyoga/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Heather-Ivany-Yoga-361635850630763/LinkedIn: https://ca.linkedin.com/in/heatherivanyyogaYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEuFyWemmUk6Dm4i_edb6dw Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

Wanna hear about the time I made an ass of myself by joining a network marketing pyramid scheme and trying to sell fitness products to all my friends?! Tune in now!White supremacy so often takes on the chilling disguise of "wellness" and "spirituality". My guest this week, Tatum Fjerstad, and I (both white cis women) have each had experiences in abusive, white-dominated "wellness" communities. In this episode, we break down some of the ways we both were harmed by, and caused harm, in these environments, and ponder the lessons we learned about survivorship, equity, and liberation. The open letter that Tatum wrote to Elena Brower can be found here. This episode pairs well with last week's episode, Whorephobia in Belly Dance & Pole Dance, which explores white supremacy in BIPOC dance forms. On this solo episode, Julia, the host of A Podcast for Moms, reflects on the birth chart reading she had with last week's guest, Ashley Tracey. She specifically speaks to what she learned about the central theme of her life and some of her core truths; her tendency to over-intellectualize things; her shadow side; and her purpose. She also shares what she learned about her daughter's birth chart and how the reading helped to affirm a lot of her parenting choices. And, Julia advocates for conscious, intentional parenting and her belief that every child needs something a little different from their parents. Elena has taught yoga and meditation since 1999 and she's an internationally recognised expert, known for her relevant, practical, holistic and creative approach to spirituality. Then came her highly praised first book, Art of Attention, that has been translated into seven languages, followed by her second book, Practice You, that became a bestseller. And her third book, Being You, was released in early 2021. Recently, Elena has transformed her practical knowledge and business expertise into an incredibly successful program called Essential Mentorship, with a mission to share transformative tools, training and community to support and nourish your personal and professional expansion.
