Ana Forrest is an inspiration and has been changing people's lives for over 45 years. She is an internationally recognized pioneer in yoga and emotional healing. She is the Creatrix of Forrest Yoga, a mystic, visionary, philanthropist, author, and Medicine Woman. Ana crafted Forrest Yoga while working through healing from her own life's traumas – abuse and addictions, the feeling of helplessness around the addictions, and the ongoing suffering from chronic injuries & illnesses. Ana took her first yoga class at age 14 and became a certified instructor in 1975. Ana used yoga and Native American ceremony to save her own life. It is her intent to pass that lifesaving ability forward. The process of healing herself inspired her to teach others to heal themselves physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. Forrest Yoga is a powerfully physical, internally focused practice that emphasizes the integration of transformative experiences from the mat into purposeful daily life. Ana is at heart a woman of the wilderness. She has spent many years in the mountains and forests learning from the animals, trees, rocks, water, and the seasons. Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, Ana spent her early years training horses, dogs, cats, birds, and the occasional snake. She brings her deep understanding of the animal kingdom to her teaching with humans. Jose Calarco is Ana's co-director of Forrest Yoga. Jose comes from a long history of shamanism, the arts, music and healing, bringing his decades of experience as an artistic prodigy to Forrest Yoga. He is also Director of the legendary Australian Indigenous company Descendance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Theatre www.descendance.com.au. Descendance won the UNESCO (United Nations) competition as the world's best Indigenous live show. Jose Calarco is a bridge to the spirit world. As Ceremonial Leader for Forrest Yoga and co – teacher with Ana Forrest, he creates and teaches ceremonies, tells creation stories from the traditions of the First Peoples of Australia and other shamanic traditions and weaves these into the yoga practice His experience as a faith healer and Medicine Man spans over 30 years. He has collaborated with Indigenous wisdom keepers like Medicine Woman and Australian cultural treasure Kathy Marika of the Yirrikala People of central Northern Australia, and he co-created Descendance Aboriginal with Indigenous elder and Song Woman Imelda Willis of the Yidinji and Kandju tribes. Imelda is Jose's Spiritual Mother, and was a rare woman who had been fully initiated. She adopted him as an equal into her tribes in Far Northern Australia, sharing knowledge and hope with each other and with the world. Also available on YouTube
Ana Forrest is an internationally-recognized pioneer in yoga and emotional healing, and the creatrix of Forrest Yoga. Jose Calarco comes from a long history of shamanism, the arts, music and healing, and co-directs Forrest Yoga. Together Ana and Jose create an experience that extends far beyond what people typically mean when they say "yoga" -- it is a unique ceremony of healing and discovery, an exploration of what in aboriginal tradition might be called dreamtime. Today we speak about the origins of Forrest Yoga, Ana's personal healing journey, and Jose's experience with indigenous ritual and music; we speak about truth, spirit, discipline, ceremony, and living life in close connection with all that matters most. Joining Yuliana today is Erica Mather, author of Your Body, Your Best Friend. Hand-selected by Ana Forrest to become a lineage-holder (called “a Guardian”) in the Forrest Yoga system, Erica is also the founder of ‘The Adore Your Body Transformational Program', a 7-step system for getting a handle on body image challenges, as well as ‘The Yoga Clinic of NYC'. In today's episode, Erica shares with listeners the story of how losing her dad at a young age propelled her into making certain life decisions and taking responsibilities for herself. She begins by delving into the tragic event of losing her father and how that became a point of inflection that reshaped the direction of her life to be the ‘captain of her own ship'. She discusses what led her to Yoga - a result of chronic migraines - and how Yoga has helped her in the battle with her illness. She also details how she switched careers from being a professional musician to becoming a Yoga teacher, and reveals the inspiration behind her book, Your Body, Your Best Friend . The episode comes to a close with Erica sharing the song that describes her life, a song about humanity. Filled with wisdom borne out of life experiences, Erica Mather has so many valuable lessons to teach us all about living life without regrets. Listening in today will definitely be time well spent. Episode Highlights: - Erica recounts the challenging event that reshaped the direction of her life - When parental expectation disappears. - The various points of inflection that changed Erica's life. - The battle with adult onset migraines - the path to Yoga. - How Yoga makes you take a long look at your body and spirit - How to resolve that feeling about being viewed with a desire to teach? - Lessons from the book, Your Body, Your Best Friend. - The impetus that inspired the writing of her book - The one song that describes Erica's life Quotes: “ I just decided I'm going to be my own person, I'm going to be the captain of my own ship, and I am not going to work for people who don't care about me.” “It's made me have ultimate responsibility for the direction of my life.” “You know, if I'm unhappy with anything about my work life, or my relationship life, or my friendship life, or my family life, or my spiritual life, I've got one person to truly point a finger at.” “He valued my creativity, my intelligence, and it set me on a path of writing some music and really doubling down on being a professional musician.” “If you don't have a relationship with your body, it'll be hard to monitor signs that it's giving you.” “Part of our maturity around body image is coming to understand how people might react to you, and then managing your own response to that reaction.” “The main message of the book is to not waste more time on things that don't produce real outcomes in your life.” “We have a very finite amount of time, we have a finite amount of energy, and time wasted hating the way you look, disliking the way you look, is time wasted.” Links: https://www.yulianakimgrant.com/phoenix-tales (Phoenix Tales Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/yulianakimgrantofficial/ (Phoenix Tales on Instagram) https://open.spotify.com/show/1heIpPMsG6HbXXIDLmAnEe (Phoenix Tales on Spotify) https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=322043276201679 (Phoenix Tales on Facebook) https://ericamather.com/ (Erica Mather Homepage) https://www.instagram.com/erica_mather/ (Erica Mather) Instagram --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/yuliana-kim-grant/message
In the midst of all the body talk we have different views of body positivity. My guest Yoga Therapist and author Erica Mather speaks about it. After completing her B.A. she worked as a temp, a personal assistant to a differently abled woman, and as an office manager to a small music agency. When her father died at the young age of 56 (she, 23), Erica realized that life is short and it's best to quickly get on with the business of living it in alignment with what matters to us most. She quit her day job and doubled down on playing the piano professionally, gigging, writing, teaching, and self-producing two jazz-inspired albums, Borderlands (1999), and The Millennium Song Cycle (2001). In 2002 Erica was voted “Madison's Favorite Jazz Artist” in the 2002 Isthmus Reader's Poll. She served on the Mayor's Arts Advisory Board. You can hear her music on SoundCloud. At the age of 26, Erica began experiencing adult onset migraines, going overnight from “healthy” to “gravely ill.” On a quest for relief she discovered Forrest Yoga. In 2004 moved to New York City to commence Ph.D. studies in Ethnomusicology at Columbia University. After earning her Masters Degree in 2006 she took a medical leave of absence, trying to get a handle on worsening migraines. In this quest, during the summer of 2006 Erica enrolled in and completed the month-long, immersive Forrest Yoga 200-hour Teacher Training with Ana Forrest, in Boston, Massachusetts. Returning to New York City, Erica began what has been her profession of the last 15 years. Fortifying her career change with retail work, Erica began growing a reputation throughout New York City as a gifted teacher, capable of high-level, physically, intellectually, and emotionally engaging education, presented in a mixed level classroom. It is in this environment of practicing and teaching yoga that Erica gestated the information culminating in her first book, Your Body, Your Best Friend: End the Confidence Crushing Pursuit of Unrealistic Beauty Standards and Embrace Your True Power (New Harbinger, April 2020). Using her own illness and body image challenges, the teachings of embodiment intrinsic to Forrest Yoga, and her experience working in private practice with people's wounded and ill bodies, Erica has developed a teaching style and message that encourages us to begin to build a relationship with the body, in service of our health, and also in the quest to discover our life's work. https://ericamather.com/ https://www.instagram.com/erica_mather/?hl=en Follow me on: facebook: https://facebook.com/couponqueenpin001/ Website: https://couponqueenpin.com Email: cqp@couponqueenpin.com Instagram: @couponqueenpin001 Twitter: @couponqueenpin #podcast #podcasting #spotify #podcasts #podcastersofinstagram #podcastlife #podcaster #streaming #radio #book #love #netflix #itunes #podcasters #author #applepodcasts #storytime #podcastshow #learning #healthy #newpodcast #motivation #spotifypodcast #applepodcast #amazon #family #travel #soundcloud #radioshow #teaching --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cqpmoments/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/cqpmoments/support

How can yoga and ceremony help us release from emotional trauma? “Our emotions have a chemical component, so part of what we teach is how to have some responsibility for the chemistry running through our bloodstream.” Emotional trauma sits in all of us, but we can shift it. In this episode, we talk to Ana Forrest and Jose Calarco to get some insight into the power of ritual and ceremony for enhancing our yoga practice, which can then act as a release for emotional trauma from the body. Ana Forrest founded Forrest Yoga, which combines the precision of Iyengar and the flow of vinyasa, but it also focuses on emotional and physical release. It’s an antidote to modern life! Ana has a pioneer spirit, so she talks about what it’s like going against the prevailing truth, how we can find our own way in the world and explore our life’s path. With Jose Calarco, we delve into the importance of ‘vision quest’ and how music and ceremony are integral in helping us to heal. In this episode you will find out about... Yoga and Emotions (8:30) The impact of holding emotions inHow to take responsibility of the chemistry we run through our bloodstream The importance of changing emotional patterns for relationships What is ceremonial vision quest? How we can access and light up our whole brain through yoga and music The role of music in healing What can we learn from indigenous communities? The individual and the community (17:00) The importance of discovering what feeds your spirit Why we should interact with our community Why the responsibility of self-development is a personal journey, but we should never go it full alone. Rituals and ceremony (21:00) Ana and Jose’s daily rituals The importance of taking pleasure in and connecting with nature How to navigate misinformation Why taking care of the planet is crucial to our survival Using challenging times as your own personal ceremony to elevate your life Trauma (35:30) How do we carry trauma and emotions in our body? Why bringing in new patterns is essential The spirituality of a physical practice Breaking the ‘rules’ (42:20) Why we should question authority and explore new possibilities The importance of being brave and pioneering Using creativity and inspiration to make something your own The importance of learning and honouring your practice Growing discipline to create paths to happiness “You need to experiment, because you’re never going to grow with anything unless you experiment with it.” Do you want to explore all our classes, including some from Ana? Ana took her first yoga class at age 14 and became a certified instructor in 1975. Ana used yoga and Native American ceremony to save her own life. It is her intent to pass that lifesaving ability forward. Her study and clinical application of healing modalities is vast, and includes homeopathy, naturopathy, anatomy, reflexology, acupressure, craniosacral treatments, regression therapy, reiki, polarity, hands on healing and Ceremony. All these inform her work and lead to her becoming a wise, intuitive teacher & healer. Jose Calarco is Ana's co-director of Forrest Yoga. Jose comes from a long history of shamanism, the arts, music and healing, bringing his decades of experience as an artistic prodigy to Forrest Yoga. Jose is also Director of the legendary Australian Indigenous company Descendance Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Dance Theatre descendance.com.au. Joining me on the show today are the following passionate and generous teachers...Juliana Machado (E-RYT 500) is a native of Brazil, who moved to New York in 2000 where she was introduced to yoga. She has taken 4 yoga teacher trainings since then: Ashtanga Primary Series a 200 Hour TT (2001), Forrest Yoga a 200 Hour TT (2006), and "Life of a Yogi" 500 Hour TT with Sri Dharma Mittra (2012), and the 800 Hour “Life of a Yogi” with Sri Dharma Mittra (2013). Juliana considers herself to be a lifelong student who is lucky enough to share and teach her lessons learned on this sacred science with all those who wish to receive it. She has taught in New York, Florida, California and in South America for the past 18. Juliana believes yoga is the "house of no judgement" where one of the best things a student can do is to practice as often as possible and never give up. Her teaching style comes from a belief in empowerment of the higher self and observance of the yoga ethical rules on and off the mat. She tailors her classes to fit needs of the ones in the room, so everyone in her class receives the maximum benefit from their time spent on the mat. With a background in contemporary dance and awareness through the movement, Juliana blends her artistic experience with her love of yoga, creating a unique space for self-exploration and discovery through the practice and power of yoga. Juliana believes that the highest we go, the easier it gets as we walk the path of yoga. After offering her classes widely across the globe, Juliana put roots down and opened Yoga Path for Healing in Catskill in 2017.Jacquelyn Nash is a yoga teacher and co-owner of The Yoga House. With her roots and practice firmly grounded in the Ashtanga lineage, Jacquelyn's classes draw from the foundational principles of that practice but also incorporate the softer and therapeutic applications of yoga that she has absorbed through various trainings. Jacquelyn teaches with the intention to make yoga accessible to all people and to demystify the “secret language” of yoga. Inspired by the light-heartedness but also sincerity of many of her teachers, Jacquelyn's approach to sharing yoga is nurturing, compassionate, and seasoned with a touch of humor. Jacquelyn also owns and manages Hudson Valley Wedding Yoga, which organizes yoga classes for weddings, bachelorette parties, and special events.Carisa Borrello is the director and owner of The Living Seed, which opened its doors to the Hudson Valley Community in the summer of 2000. Carisa is certified in Sivananda Yoga, Somatic Yoga, Yoga Tune Up®, completed the Forrest Yoga foundation course and two Advanced Teacher Training Courses with Ana Forrest, Gil Headly's 6 Day Human Dissection Workshop and is initiated into the path of Andean Mysticism with Elizabeth Jenkins and Don Juan Nunez Del Prado. She is a certified Hanna Somatic Educator (CHSE) from The Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, and a level 6 Student and level 1 Instructor of I Liq Chuan, the Martial Art of Awareness, a family style Kung Fu based on principles of Tai Chi and Zen philosophy. Carisa is eternally grateful for the devotion, wisdom and insight that all of her teachers and ancestors have shared with her. Their passion for their arts, for healing the human spirit and mending the hoop of the people are a daily inspiration. She is honored to practice and share the art of Hanna Somatics, Yoga and the Internal Arts- they are gifts - bringing us back to ourselves so we can heal, love and grow to express our highest potential. Carisa creates a sanctuary, a sacred place for people to deepen their relationship to their spirits through movement, mindfulness, meditation and creative expression.Today these ladies share how and why they got into yoga, how they became yoga teachers and then eventually yoga studio owners. We checked in on how they are doing business now with COVID forcing the closing of their physical spaces. They are all offering classes virtually and in person outdoors with some on demand options at the Living Seed and The Yoga House. They of course also offer private sessions and if you were inspired by Carisa's sharing of Hanna Somatics, she is also doing private sessions outdoors at her home and her studio which for pain management and other needs. They happily share how yoga has changed their lives for the better and offer ways to stay connected to the present moment versus in fear or anxiety during these uncertain times we are all navigating.Because we broadcast out of Kingston, NY, I wanted to also recognize the other Kingston based studios, The Hot Spot offering outdoor and online classes, and Yoga Lab offering online classes.Today's show was engineered Nick Panken host of Freedom Highway from radiokingston.orgOur show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.orgLeave me a voicemail with your thoughts or a few words about who has what you want and why! Obviously, she was wrong. In 2015, she completed her first teacher training through YogaWorks under the mentorship of Chrissy Carter and has been teaching full time since. After almost ten years practicing yoga, and only yoga, she developed pain in her hips. More yoga and passive stretching didn't help. Instead, she had to completely rethink her practice, and therefore her teaching, to give her body more strength and stability. This led Markella on a path of discovery, advanced education in anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics, and further training. Now she helps people move and feel better while doing the practice they love and in their daily lives. Her teaching style is grounded, light-hearted, and rooted in resilience and exploration. For our 36th episode, I sat down with Ana Forrest and Jose Calarco. I never had the pleasure to practice live in person with them, but I love the importance and the attention to healing that Forest Yoga stands for. The intentions behind the practices are truly powerful and the spectrum of tools to get reconnected to the body, to the truth, and to move through our suffering is really making those practices much richer, and so I wanted to sit down with them to chat about what healing possibility yoga can offer us.5 BIGGEST TAKE AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1. Your life is infinitely precious. Don't waste it. Thinking that you are not enough is a lie. Tend to your life force and to your spirit in a respectful and reverent way. When you act in a way that doesn't serve you, deep down you know, so stop. Instead do things that help you evolve.2. Yoga alone might not be enough to heal deep wounds. The body needs movement and action, the mind needs to be still, the emotions need expression and the spirit needs nourishment. 3. To be in integrity, you have to connect with all parts of yourself.4. There's a lot of suffering and anguish in the yoga community, but yogis need to understand that you don't have to suffer. You can get out of pain, heal your pain and start to live a life that you are proud of.5. When you set an intention for class, pick something inside of you that needs heeling.QUESTIONS THEY ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what was the vision behind starting Forrest Yoga?Integrity is a pillar of forest yoga. How do you teach it?I think that before we can even connect to our integrity we need to move out numbness and connect to our bodies, so we can listen better to what it’s trying to tell us. How do you approach that? Where can people start? Can you give examples of tools you give students to get out of pain and heal? How do you work with the breath?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. 'Affirmations are like whipped cream on garbage, you can make it sweet, but it's still garbage.' I've never found affirmations that helpful, I can't link emotion to the words so they don't change how I feel. What I find most helpful is to ask questions that move me forward. When you ask yourself a question, your brain goes off and looks for the answer and it's a game changer. #FlapjackMoment Show Notes: Thanks to Ana Forrest for the lovely little quote at the start of this epsiode.
