The Book I HAD to Write

Today's episode features my interview with Jennifer Lang. Her memoir, Places We Left Behind, is a marvel of brevity and form. It's the story of how one woman, a hybrid of American-French-Israeli identities, navigates cultural and religious differences with her husband over the course of three decades, as her family searches for what it means to find a sense of home.In our interview, Jennifer shares how she transformed a “long-winded, boring, and flat” 90,000-word draft into a concise and sharp 14,000-word memoir told through a fragmented structure—what she's calling a “memoir-in-miniature.” She also addresses the critical feedback from a developmental editor, which helped her uncover an innovative structure. Finally, we talk about writing about other”: the emotional and creative negotiations involved in writing about her husband and their marriage, revealing how this process has both challenged and strengthened their relationship.----------------------"I had a very traditional manuscript of over 90,000 words when all was said and done. And it was really long-winded and boring and flat, and I hated it…I hired a developmental editor who gave me a lot of feedback. And one of the last things she said was, put it away for a while. Just let all of this sink in. And I think that was the best advice she gave me."----------------------KEY TAKEAWAYS* Transformation Through Editing: Jennifer Lang's journey from a 90,000-word manuscript to a 14,000-word concise and effective memoir underscores the fact that it can take time to figure out to figure out your story, and that brevity can be a crucial factor to remember.* Cultural Identity and Belonging: The memoir reflects Jennifer's complex relationship with her Jewish identity and her experiences living in California, France, and Israel.* Marriage and Memoir Writing: Writing about others is one of the most fraught areas of memoir for a reason. And writing about intimate relationships requires especially careful consideration. In Jennifer's case, it ended up unexpectedly strengthening the bond with her husband.* Innovative Structure & Form: The fragmented, playful structure of Jennifer's memoir, with elements like strike-throughs and “chapterettes” as she likes to call them, adds a unique layer of engagement and depth to her storytelling.* Literary Community Engagement: Jennifer's work with the Israel Writer Studio highlights the importance of community in a place with fewer English-language writers.----------------------"The level of pain, trauma, loss is so beyond. I don't know how we're going to get out of it." —about the impact of Oct 7, 2023 on the Israeli psyche----------------------NOTABLE QUOTES"I have been writing around it for years, if not decades. I have been writing about longing, belonging, culture, language, community, other, and home. In short, in long, in essay, in short, memoir, in flash. I just kept going around and around and finally had time to figure out how to get through it." (0:02:50)"I really feel like the story of me bouncing between cultures starts way back. Like kindergarten way back." (0:03:46)"I think that when we write long or when we write without any kind of constraint, we are lazy with our word choice. And so putting the constraint on makes a writer understand that every word counts." (0:21:16)"If you're going to reveal a character's underbelly, you have to reveal your own. If you're going to fault a character for their flaw, you have to do the same for yourself." (0:24:01)"I think I did anything but make him a villain. I think in the end, it's like a love letter." (0:24:41)ABOUT TODAY'S GUESTJennifer Lang was born in the San Francisco Bay Area, lives in Tel Aviv, and runs Israel Writers Studio. For Dennis Kerr, his military experience and yoga path have become intertwined over the last twenty years. Dennis enlisted in the Army in 2002 and went to Iraq where his path of yoga began after being inspired by the international bestseller, Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda, and his curiosity led him to Rodney Yee introduction to yoga videos while deployed. Soon after, the discipline of his military experience, musical background, and yoga practice all evolved together through the breath.

Rodney Yee is an internationally recognized yoga teacher, co-founder of Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT), and the author of two books: Yoga: The Poetry of the Body and Moving Toward Balance: 8 Weeks of Yoga with Rodney Yee. Rodney has also been featured in over 30 Yoga DVD titles and became an overnight sensation when he appeared on Oprah in 1999, selling 1 million videos the very next day. His connection with the Feathered Pipe Ranch runs deep, as he credits India Supera, Cree elder Pat Kennedy and other staff and teachers with his continued growth throughout the 15 years of summer retreats in Montana. In this conversation, Rodney talks about his experience growing up as a Chinese-American in both Oklahoma and California, his journey through gymnastics, dance, and yoga, and the epiphany of visiting Japan, where his body recognized the relief of walking through streets and dancing on stages where the majority of people shared his similar facial features. We discuss the ways that our ancestors and family history live within our tissues and the reckoning process of finding out who we are, where we came from and where we belong—a therapeutic process that can unfold and bubble up with the practices of asana, pranayama and meditation.Anyone who practices yoga in this country today can most certainly give a deep bow to Rodney, as he was paramount in helping to spread yoga across the West. He continues to teach worldwide today, expanding self-care techniques to healthcare workers, veterans, teachers and other industries.YogaShanti.comSupport the show (https://featheredpipe.com/gratitude/)

On the day after the Winter Solstice, as the world tucked in for an Omicron staycation, a news flash came over the wire. Yoga International—one of the largest yoga media companies in the world—had been acquired by Gaia—one of the largest pseudoscience, pseudointellectual, conspiracy theory platforms in the world. While the CEO of Yoga International immediately assured nervous content providers that the platform will remain editorially independent, only time will tell. What we do know is that countless print articles written by earnest yogis and thousands of hours of classes created by earnest yoga instructors will now share space with David Icke, an antisemitic conspiracy theorist who believes lizard people have coopted world governments—and that's only the start. The acquisition predicts even more brain-melting in yogaland, exposing even more vulnerable and credulous seekers to a dumpster fire of meaning dressed up in a simulation of spirituality. Julian covers some Gaia history. Derek makes us suffer through some Gaia content. If you are a newer teacher sequencing might feel overwhelming at times and having some structure can be very grounding and helpful. If you are not a teacher, this episode is still for you, don’t go anywhere. Having some knowledge, some behind the curtain information about sequencing might help you identify or choose the right teacher for you and it might help you create a container for your own self-practice, give you direction and encourage you to step on the mat more regularly. For this episode, I sat down with Jason Crandell. Jason is a natural teacher and author with more than 20 years of experience. Named “one of the teachers shaping the future of yoga,” by Yoga Journal, Jason has been an in-demand teacher at conferences around the world for more than a decade. Considered a teacher’s teacher, Jason has taught on countless teacher-training faculties, leads trainings globally, and regularly presents teacher-training content at esteemed conferences, so he’s the perfect guest to talk about sequencing.MY 5 BIGGEST TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:1- Teachers should not focus on creativity first in their sequencing. Creativity is important but there are skills to be learned first. A sequence should be an expression of what you want to teach on that day. Once you have identified what you are trying to teach and how you will get there, then you can sprinkle creativity in.2- All details matter but not all details matter equally. If you want to offer a whole-body movement and feel-good practice, you can't teach too many techniques at the same time. You can be detailed as much as you want but not about everything you are teaching. Be specific with your details, but create repetition in the details you choose, so students can learn.3- Sequencing is not about rules. It's about creating a container, a structure you can color in. 4- Here's his architectural sequencing method:- Choose a few (3) focal points (region of the body, postural techniques, theme, peak pose...)- Preparation (teach your detail, specific things in link with your focal point)- Sun Salutations and variation (establish timing, rhythm, cadence, pacing)- Sun Salutation and Standing Posture (rhythm and focal points, options for different bodies, ability, and intensity desire)- Sun Salutation and Arm Balance/Inversion- Backbends- Forebends, Twists- Closing (Savasana)5- The psychological and psycho-emotional aspects of yoga are implicits to the process. They come from the embodied experience of the practice, not the intellectual or rational explanation of the concepts. The essence of yoga is a sensory experience of the asana. If you believe in the teaching of the yoga tradition, there's no difference between what is physical or philosophical. A class is not more spiritual or less spiritual, the spirituality is just more or less spelled out for you.QUESTION HE ANSWERED:Your main teachers are Rodney Yee, Richard Rosen, and Ramanan Patel, what’s one thing you’ve learned from each that is now part of your teachings today?Your style of vinyasa is slightly different from other vinyasa teachers, why do you emphasize alignment and technique in your vinyasa? Why is it important for you?Why do you think teachers should follow a sequencing method and commit to it?Do you think sequencing can help personal practice? Can we go over the steps of your sequencing method? Why do you choose the physical as a focal point and less the philosophy? For our 41st episode, I sat down with Richard Rosen. Richard a renowned yoga teacher and the author of five books on yoga. He trained in Iyengar Yoga in San Francisco, and has been teaching for more that 30 years. He, Clare Finn, and Rodney Yee founded the Piedmont Yoga Studio (now called "Nest Yoga") in Oakland in 1987. He is a contributing editor of the Yoga Journal and president of the Yoga Dana Foundation. He has written hundreds of reviews of yoga books and videos for magazines including Yoga Journal, and has given workshops in countries all around the world. Today we sat down to talk about the basic concepts around pranayama.5 BIGGEST TAKE-AWAY FROM THIS EPISODE1- You can't push yourself in pranayama. You have to remain calm, patient, take your time and back off from your desire to get something done. If you feel, anxious, frustration or anger, you're pushing to hard.2- When we are not breathing efficiently, generally in comes form tension in the body, and emotions like fear that make us contracted.3- To begin a breathing practice, start by getting comfortable with watching the breath. Don't do anything. Let the breath have it's own way.4- Be patient, do it frequently, start laying down on the floor, add support under the spine to open the chest. Sandbags and earplugs are also very useful to support you in your practice.5- Pranayama is usually done after asana and a gateway to meditation. Asana prepares you to sit and then, Savasana is the most important preparation for pranyama. You actually prepare for pranayama by doing nothing. If you cant sit in alignment, breathing becomes difficult so stay reclined and breathe laying down.QUESTIONS HE ANSWERED DURING THIS EPISODE :Can you tell us about yourself and your yoga journey? Can you explain what is prana and pranayama? You talk about becoming a witness when we practice… What does that mean? Why you are passionate about this particular limb of yoga? What does it mean to be an efficient breather? What are the common defects of the breath? What are the elements of the breath? How do we prepare for pranayama? What’s the foundation we need to establish? Why practice pranayama? What are the benefits? How does pranayama affect our state of mind or prepare us for meditation. What’s the link between prana and consciousness?Tips, tricks, guidelines for beginners? Or reminders for regular practitioners? For students that are new to pranayama, where’s a good place to start? For newer teachers that would like to start including some pranayama in their classes, can you give some ideas of how to build a breath pattern into a whole class, or use pranayama as a theme for the practice? Is it realistic to include pranayama in 1h class? Why is pranayama not a very popular practice?Do you think people need to understand the koshas to practice pranayama?SUBSCRIBE, RATE & REVIEW!GIVEAWAY WINNER. RYT500 Melissa joins Paulette for a heartfelt conversation about how yoga can change your life for the better. Melissa McKim from Marshfield MA is a student and Yoga Alliance registered graduate of Sacred Space Yoga School's 500 hour Yoga Teacher Training. Melissa started her healing and transformation journey back in the late 90’s when she felt lost, confused and hurting and she had no idea why. Her life looked great on the outside but it felt ugly and painful on the inside and it was yoga that saved her. Paulette invites Melissa to be her guest as she knows how common Melissa's experience is. We all at some point in our lives struggle with feelings of anxiety and yoga and the study and practice of pranayama are highly effective. Melissa's Video with Rodney Yee, hot power yoga classes were the start of her journey but she still didn't feel any lasting effects of the practice. She would take classes and sit in my car, break out in hives and try to calm herself down. Melissa continued to go but knew she needed something deeper, something more soothing, something tangible. She knew she needed to find a yoga teacher training to be able to understand the history, theory, and philosophy of yoga and not just a choreographed sequence of movements. There was something that was helping her and she needed to know what that was and why it was working. Heated practice was throwing Melissa's (Pitta) fire on fire. Melissa found Maureen Spencer, Paulette's original mentor, and guru. What we see in group classes is effective but her teachers weren’t giving her the science behind it. My guest for this mantra-filled podcast is Cathie Caccia. Please read more about this “yoga superstar” below. Please also see below for the links to her website, with information about retreats and classes you can get involved in.   If you are one of the lucky people listening to the episode prior to October 18th, 2019, please see below for a link to the retreat with Rodney Yee and Colleen Saidman Yee. There are NINE mantras for this show.  They are: 1. Being a “yoga superstar” is a bit of an oxymoron (yoga is for every-body). 2.  Yoga is about I'm doing rather than doing. 3. A major benefit of yoga is being connected to one's authentic self. 4. Finally - a message about getting unstuck:  “don't calcify the conversation, listen”. 5.  We all need to be heard, seen, and hopefully understood (listen to others). 6.  We need to see ourselves, listen to ourselves, and hopefully understand ourselves (listen to self). 7. Breathing can create physical, spiritual, and mental healing. 8.  We are all radio stations broadcasting a signal; what vibrational seeds do you want to germinate? 9.  Creating a mantra for the breath (in and out) is so easy, yet so transformational. Links: Cathie’s website: http://www.cathiecaccia.com/ Retreat: http://www.cathiecaccia.com/yoga-events-workshops-kirtans-ketchum-idaho About Cathie: Cathie began her yogic studies in 1984 and was immediately captivated by the physical, energetic and philosophical aspects of the practice.  She has found tremendous value in yoga’s capacity to quiet the mind and guide the practitioner home to the Self.  Cathie has extensive training in Yoga, Yoga Therapy, Shiatsu, Acupressure and Massage.  Teaching since 1987, Cathie’s classes combine her love of Yoga, Chinese energetics and Sanskrit chanting to support her students in finding their inner wisdom, clarity and peace. Cathie is registered with Yoga Alliance as E-RYT 500, she teaches public and private classes, workshops and yoga teacher training. Cathie is a licensed massage therapist with over 1200 hours of training.

Obviously, she was wrong. In 2015, she completed her first teacher training through YogaWorks under the mentorship of Chrissy Carter and has been teaching full time since. After almost ten years practicing yoga, and only yoga, she developed pain in her hips. More yoga and passive stretching didn't help. Instead, she had to completely rethink her practice, and therefore her teaching, to give her body more strength and stability. This led Markella on a path of discovery, advanced education in anatomy, kinesiology, and biomechanics, and further training. Now she helps people move and feel better while doing the practice they love and in their daily lives. Her teaching style is grounded, light-hearted, and rooted in resilience and exploration. Did you know that the fastest growing demographic of new yogis is the 55 and older set? Neither did I. I learned all sorts of fascinating facts, statistics, and new research from this week's guest, Baxter Bell.Together with his co-author, Nina Zolotow, Baxter has a new book, Yoga for Healthy Aging and that's the main focus of this episode. I can't think of two people better-positioned to write this book: Baxter spent years practicing medicine as a family doc before becoming a yoga therapist and practicing acupuncturist. Nina is the author of several books on yoga and is a certified yoga teacher, having studied extensively with esteemed teachers like Rodney Yee and Donald Moyer.I don't know about you, but Jason and I have tried -- unsuccessfully! -- to get our parents to do yoga. This book reminds me of how beneficial yoga practice is as we age. I think it's a vital and meaningful book for any thoughtful yoga teacher's toolkit. In this week's podcast we learn more about:* The story behind Baxter and Nina's new book Yoga for Healthy Aging: A Guide to Lifelong Wellness* Why "health span" might be a better goal than a longer life span.* How holding yoga poses can assist with bone strength.* His perspective on "resting" the heart in addition to exercising it.* How spending time barefoot can assist with balance and proprioception as we age.* The importance of flexibility, agility, strength, and balance as we age -- and how they overlap and influence each other.* The best thing we can do to improve cognitive function over time. Talking Yoga
Love and Kindness in Your Practice, with Rodney Yee

What role does kindness play in daily yoga practice? When it comes to Rodney Yee, quite a lot, as he tells host Colleen Saidman Yee in answer to a question from Jeremiah in Northampton, MA. You’ll hear Rodney draw on wisdom from spiritual teachers like Ram Dass, the poet Rumi and the Dalai Lama, who said “My religion is kindness.” Discover how the growth toward kindness, spurred by what Krishnamurti calls “choiceless awareness,” is a slow process, even for master teachers like Rodney and Colleen, and why Rodney doesn't think of time as a purely linear progression. Moving from kindness to love, Sheila from Hawaii wants to know what role love plays in Rodney’s practice and teachings, which leads Rodney and Colleen into a discussion about love and conflict. You’ll find out why Rodney feels like he’s not qualified to describe love: “Does a fish describe the ocean?” Luckily for us, he doesn’t stop there, helping us understand how conflict is merely a “subset of love.”

When it comes to balancing the roles of businessperson, teacher, student, practitioner, wife, and mother, we can all learn from Colleen Saidman Yee. As she tells episode host Zubin Shroff, finding time for her own personal practice can be a challenge. So how does she do it? Delegation, a strong work ethic, and starting every day with her own practice first thing in the morning. Being handed a cup of tea by husband Rodney Yee after rolling out of bed is nice, too – “Some mornings, we prop ourselves up and do our Pranayama in bed.” In response to a question from Lydia from San Antonio, TX, Colleen shares how menopause is another area where yoga practice can restore balance. She describes how Sitali pranayam, which is a very cooling practice, can counter the heat associated with both perimenopause and menopause. Colleen shares which asana poses are most important during menopause: Warrior 2, Utkatasana and Plank Pose. You’ll also hear about the differences between men and women in the practice of mula bandha, and why Kegel exercises seem to give women an advantage over men in the practice.
