First up, Steven shares his frustrating but relatable journey setting up a flatbed scanner via a virtual machine on his Mac Studio to read medical documents privately. The hosts reflect on the pros and cons of returning to older, more reliable tech versus the convenience of modern scanning apps—and the risks to privacy they may pose. Then it's onto major tech headlines: Apple and Meta face significant EU fines under the Digital Markets Act. The duo explores what these penalties mean for users, developer freedom, and privacy, while questioning whether they truly change the playing field. Finally, the spotlight turns to HumanWare's Stellar Trek. A brand-new update introduces book library access, pedestrian traffic light detection, and text export features, making this powerful navigation tool even more valuable for blind users. Plus, Steven is getting hands-on with the device soon—with support this time! The show wraps up with listener feedback on EasyReader login issues, the RNIB reading service interface, and the personal benefits of learning Braille. In this episode of Double Tap, Steven and Shaun dive into the latest iOS 18.4 update and put Apple's much-hyped Visual Intelligence feature to the test—and let's just say, it didn't go quite as expected. They discuss real-world accessibility challenges with this new tool, especially when compared to apps like Be My Eyes. Plus, they explore the new ambient playlists in Apple Music and debate their actual usefulness. The conversation soon shifts into a broader Apple critique: from Siri's unreliability to ongoing accessibility issues in iCloud for Windows, and the frustrating UI in Apple's Voice Memos app. Listener Brian introduces the accessible Tape It app, prompting a larger discussion about mobile vs. desktop recording and editing for blind users. Meanwhile, Steven shares his workflow for using VoiceOver with Final Cut and reveals how he's mastering drag-and-drop with a screen reader. We also hear thoughtful feedback from listeners about Braille literacy, the challenges of light sensitivity, and the emotional impact of losing sight—especially when thinking about past visual experiences like video games or driving. For those of you who listen to That Real Blind Tech Show, you will be aware of the name and voice in today's episode. Brian Fischler is the host of the podcast which is very similar in nature to our own show here, with lots of humour and fun alongside hopefully educational material too. Steven also talks to Brian about his recent adventures taking part in AxeCon 2022. Despite some of the DTC team feeling unwell due to a mixture of doughnuts & in your face trees, Double Tap Canada is back with this week's tech news. First up, it's a look at the recent interview with Apple's Tim Cook. Did he actually reveal anything about Apple's rumoured self-driving car? Were there any clues as to when we will see Apple's smart glasses? Next up, it's Steven's new gadget. A Logitech Keys To Go keyboard. Considering how much he loves his standard Logitech Keys keyboard, just why is he sending this portable version back? Surprisingly, the answer lies in the lack of tap-dancing ducks… Speaking of ducks, we'll also be taking a look at Steven's new favourite app, Perky Duck. This free app for Windows & Mac allows you to take notes using a standard keyboard using the S D F & J K L keys as braille keys. Will this get Steven back into braille? In other news, in the latest update to popular audio social media app Clubhouse, it's now possible to make payments to users through the app. Steven & Marc see this as a good thing but Shaun is worried it may attract too many scammers. There's also a new smart watch on the market but is Casio just too late to the game? And at around $700 US, will anyone even give it a chance? Finally, Belkin have announced a new charging stand for the iPhone 12 range that has the ability to swivel and track you as you move around a room. With this and the recent Echo Show 10, is this feature actually useful or is it just plain creepy?
Double Tap Canada takes a trip back in time this week as Steven starts the show in a nostalgic mood. He's managed to get his hands on an old piece of tech he used way back when he was at school. While it's always interesting to look back at retro tech, the more pressing question that is raised is just why was Steven's school so smelly? It's then on to a discussion on just what to look out for when buying a ‘budget' laptop. Of course, if you don't care about screen quality or size then there are great savings to be made on displays without touch-screen support or 4K resolution. But, what about memory? Will you really notice the difference between 8GB of RAM and 16GB or RAM? If you are just looking to upgrade your existing laptop which component should you spend your money on? In tech news this week, Apple have announced the date for their Worldwide Developers Conference. Running from the 7th to the 11th of June, this is the event where we'll see Apple's plans for iOS 15 and other operating systems and maybe some new hardware too. Are we finally going to get confirmation of Apple Glasses? Marc & Shaun can't wait, so why is Steven so uninterested? The streaming media service HBO Max has finally added some 1500 hours of audio described content to its library and also promises to make their app more accessible. Obviously, this is great news for us but more than that it's a great example of what blind organizations & the blind community can achieve when it comes to holding companies accountable regarding accessibility. Other tech news include how Starbucks in the US now have free Aira access, just what is wrong with the Apple TV remote & how the success of Clubhouse is showing people the benefits of audio when it comes to accessing news & entertainment. Finally, Steven tells us about his latest purchase, the AfterShokz OpenComm bone conduction headset. The Aftershokz range of bone conduction headsets have been extremely popular in the blind & visually impaired community as they allow you to listen to audio safely, without blocking out environmental noise around you. The OpenComms have a boom arm microphone, which should make then ideal when it comes to making calls. Do they deliver on this promise? Steven will be letting us know.
Double Jab, sorry, I mean Double Tap Canada returns with another look at all that's new in the world of tech. We take a look at an interesting new TV show from Apple that focuses on audio rather than visuals. Calls, which is available on Apple TV+ has nothing on screen other than visualizations of the phone calls you are listening in on. Obviously, this is a concept that we as visually impaired people are used to but just how will this show be received by mainstream sighted users? Also, Disney Plus has announced that they will be releasing more theatrical movies to their streaming service. Available at an additional cost over the monthly subscription, is this in fact the best way to enjoy the latest movies? And why does Shaun hate cinemas so much? In other news, we have a new start-up called Framework who promise an easily upgradable, easily repairable laptop. Need more USB ports? Simply pull out the old ones and plug in the new. Cracked the screen? Simply unclip the broken one and pop in a new one. There's no denying it sounds great, but this has been tried before and never taken off. Could this be different? There's also a new smart watch from One Plus One with amazing battery life, rumors of a brand new HomePod with a screen, a possible replacement for Android called Google Fuchsia and most shocking of all, the news that Shaun has actually bought some tech! He'll be giving you his impressions of the Amazon Echo Buds.
This weeks Double Tap Canada was recorded in front of a live studio audience. Well, nearly. We did in fact record live in the Club House app and we'd like to thank everyone who took part. It was great to chat with you all. This week Steven unboxes the new Echo Show 10 from Amazon. Does its ability to spin around and track you as you walk around the room creep you out or does it make video calls etc. far more natural and easier? Talking of creeping you out, Steven will be telling, or should that be confessing, to us all about something he found online to help him sleep. It may not be tech, but it does lead to an interesting conversation on hugging cows and Marcs love of walking alpacas. We'll also be taking a quick look at the new Android Accessibility Suite 9.1. What new features of Talkback has Shaun & Steven been using? And just who is that celebrity voice Steven is using for his text to speech? If you'd like to comment on any of the topics we discussed or ask us a question, you can email us feedback@ami.ca or text/call on 1844 971 1999.
Double Tap Canada is back to talk tech but something is missing this week. Steven Scott is supposed to be off on holiday but can he really keep away from the show? Unusually, it's Shaun who is waiting for a tech delivery this week. It's so unusual in fact that he needs to give the delivery person a password in order to receive the parcel. Both Marc & Shaun have never heard of this before and of course, Marc wants to turn it into a treasure hunt by announcing the password on air. In less shocking news, Marc is also awaiting a new gadget in the form of the latest drone from DGI. He's definitely excited but is there any reason Shaun, as a visually impaired person, should be to? Spoiler alert, the answer is probably no. It's then on to the news that Twitter is introducing an audio only feature similar to the incredibly popular Club House app. But with companies like Facebook & Twitter rushing to get in on the new audio only craze are they in danger of releasing a less than perfect experience for their users? Also, Google have just released what they're calling a whole new version of Talkback. When Samsung released their S21 smartphone recently we were confused as to why it came with a version of Talkback which boasted some impressive added features such as new multi-finger gestures, voice control & user customizable gestures. Well, now we know. Google & Samsung are collaborating on the development of the Android screen reader Talkback from now on and Google have now released this new version to the rest of the Android world. Finally, in listener emails we take a look at a new device promising to replace the trusty white cane and a question on using the iOS Voice Control feature
Despite some technical issues involving a dog & a chewed ethernet cable, Steven Scott, Marc Aflalo & Shaun Preece are back to take a look at the latest tech news in another episode of Double Tap Canada. With rumors that Facebook are working on their very own smart watch, the team discuss just what it could have to offer and why anyone would care. Also, Microsoft have confirmed that they will be releasing a new non-subscription version of Office later this year to replace Office 2019. Do people want a return to the days of paying a one-off payment for software or is the monthly subscription model here to stay? Talking of subscriptions, are you planning to subscribe to the Apple TV+ service? It appears that 69% of current subscribers are still using Apples free trial offer. Yes, the accessibility is second to none & every single show is audio described but is there enough content to keep people paying a monthly fee? Of course, there’s a whole lot more such as Marc’s Star Link plan, Steven’s on-going struggle to get 1Gigabit internet & a listener who needs help sending text messages without a phone…If you’d like to comment and have your say on any of the topics discussed, we would love to get your emails, voicemails or texts. You can email feedback@ami.ca or call/text 1844 971 1999.
We start this weeks Double Tap Canada with a plea for help from a confused Steven Scott. He’s still looking for a gaming rig to play his beloved truck driving game on but with so many options out there, just what should he buy? Marc Aflalo will be pointing him in the right direction. Sticking with gaming, we’ll be taking a look at the news that Google has closed it’s game studios for their Stadia platform. Does this mean the end for the short-lived gaming service? In other tech news, Apple has just released the developer beta of iOS 14.5 and there are 2 features that may be worth getting excited about. Also, Amazon have just launched the Alexa Guard Plus subscription service in the US & Canada. The Alexa Guard feature will listen out and notify you when your smartspeaker hears any trigger sounds such as breaking glass, smoke alarms etc. Just what extra protection do you get with the new Alexa Guard Plus feature and is it worth the $4.99 monthly subscription? While we’re talking Alexa, Steven will be running through some skills & features that can be handy if you are working from home, or when you want to annoying your dog… Finally, Steven takes a look at 2 smart lighting products, 1 from Phillips Hue & 1 from TP Tapo. Just how easy are they to set up? it’s on to your emails. After buying a new touch screen laptop, Bilal wants to know if the Jaws screen reader has touch screen support. If you have any questions, then we’d love to hear from you. You can email feedback@ami.ca or leave a voicemail on 844 971 1999
As an added bonus this week, not only are we diving into all the latest tech news but also Mr Steven Scott will be letting us know just what’s hot in fashion this season… Of course, Steven’s fashion sense may not suit everybody, or anybody to be honest. In tech news, first up for discussion is Apples new Fitness Plus feature Time to Walk. This feature, coming in the next Apple Watch OS update, uses podcast style audio to motivate you to walk your way to fitness. We’ll also be sharing our experiences of using Fitness Plus so far. Also, rumors are abound that Apple are working on a VR headset. With a fabric design & a fan could this possibly be a product that will ever be released? Also how did Steven’s VR experiment on the Mac work out? In Android news, there was an interesting announcement from Samsung at their recent Unpacked event regarding improvements they’ve made to TalkBack. We all love seeing developments in accessibility, but there is one caveat, it’s only available to the new S21 smartphone range. Although they are promising they will bring it to other Samsung devices in time. Back to Apple, Shaun has a warning to Mantis & Chameleon braille display users. The recently released iOS 14.4 update has a bug which means that these devices will lose connection when you lock your Apple device. Thanks to AppleVis & APH for discovering & letting us know of the problem. The show wraps up with some interesting news regarding YouTube & voice control and we take a look at your messages. If you’d like to get in touch with us you can email feedback@ami.ca or give us a call on 844 971 1999. We love to get your feedback.
