Eric Barker, bestselling author of Barking Up the Wrong Tree and Plays Well with Others, reveals what decades of social science research says about relationships, friendship, love, and meaning. From his journey through Hollywood screenwriting to the video game industry to running one of the most-read personal development blogs, Eric explains his obsession with translating peer-reviewed research into clear, entertaining, actionable insights. He breaks down why so many questions about happiness and connection have already been answered by science but locked away in ivory towers and how making this knowledge accessible became his life work. This conversation explores the frameworks that govern human connection and why relationship skills might be the ultimate meta-skill. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

"I've shot almost 10,000 pictures of dogs across the world over the last four years. But the pictures in this book were all shot on the beaches of Goa in the monsoon. I began shooting them during the pandemic. A deep grey sky is like a photographer's ideal studio. The atmosphere and the subdued palette came because of the season. The whole intent of this book was to create awareness about dogs in an oblique way. Somebody like me who's spent his life bullying people to do his bidding, whether it's the PM or Jeff Bezos, was now suddenly confronted by these stray dogs who don't listen to you for anything in the world! So these images are the result of serendipity; they are a happy accident. About the poems and short pieces in the book, I chose them because I wanted unpretentious voices" - Rohit Chawla, author, 'Rain Dogs', talks to Manjula Narayan about the magnificent Indian street dog, how the world has almost forgotten the pandemic, the need to alleviate the suffering of dogs, cattle, donkeys, camels and elephants on the streets of India, Ratan Tata's legacy, the return of the physical magazine, and AI in photography, among other things on the Books & Authors podcast Learn more about your ad choices. The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has become one of the most controversial initiatives of the Trump administration, but what does it actually represent? We're joined by Shawn Steel, National Committeeman for the Republican National Committee, and Professor Luke Nichter, historian at Chapman University, to explore the deeper meaning behind this government restructuring effort. Our conversation reveals how DOGE taps into profound middle-class frustration with government spending and opacity. As Steele explains, "Elon Musk is taking the great angst of the great middle class in America... What has been going on all these years? Where is this money going?" This sentiment has fueled a movement that extends far beyond partisan politics, challenging what many see as an entrenched administrative state insulated from accountability. We examine fascinating demographic shifts showing how government employment has effectively created a new privileged class in many regions, especially in California where public sector jobs have grown at three times the rate of private employment while paying approximately twice the median income. This transformation represents what Joel Kotkin describes as "class warfare," pitting traditional middle-class Americans against a government-employed "clerisy" class. The discussion also places DOGE within broader historical context, suggesting we may be witnessing the early stages of a political realignment similar to shifts that occurred in the 1960s and 1970s. Trump has successfully channeled widespread resentment among Americans who feel their tax dollars repeatedly bail out elites during crises while they themselves receive little support. As this movement spreads to state governments, we may be entering a new era of governance that emphasizes transparency and accountability.Join us to understand not just the mechanics of DOGE, but how it reflects deep currents in American society that are reshaping our political landscape. Whether you see it as long-overdue reform or dangerous disruption, this conversation will give you valuable context for one of today's most consequential political developments.Support Our WorkThe Center for Demographics and Policy focuses on research and analysis of global, national, and regional demographic trends and explores policies that might produce favorable demographic results over time. SummaryArtificial intelligence has dominated the headlines for several months due to the successes of large language models. This has prompted numerous debates about the possibility of, and timeline for, artificial general intelligence (AGI). Peter Voss has dedicated decades of his life to the pursuit of truly intelligent software through the approach of cognitive AI. In this episode he explains his approach to building AI in a more human-like fashion and the emphasis on learning rather than statistical prediction.AnnouncementsHello and welcome to the AI Engineering Podcast, your guide to the fast-moving world of building scalable and maintainable AI systemsYour host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Peter Voss about what is involved in making your AI applications more "human"InterviewIntroductionHow did you get involved in machine learning? Can you start by unpacking the idea of "human-like" AI?How does that contrast with the conception of "AGI"?The applications and limitations of GPT/LLM models have been dominating the popular conversation around AI. HOW DO YOU ALL DO BOOKSHELVERS!? Another fortnight has passed and that means another sparkling new episode of Barks from the Bookshelf is here to tickle your, dog nerd, ear buds into joyus submission. This week is a WHOPPER of an episode BUT it's a whopper for a very good reason! This week We are thrilled to interview the wonderful force of nature that is Linda Michaels, M.A., Psychology about her book The Do No Harm Dog Training & Behaviour Handbook. As many of you already know, Linda will be crossing the Atlantic and speaking at the DOGx 2024 conference this October. You'll get a glimpse into the “force of nature” that is Linda Michaels during this interview as we discuss her origins, the decisions and processes that led to the book itself, the development of the Hierarchy of Dog Needs, activism and some, good old psychology as well. We also get a taster of what's to come at DOGx. There really isn't enough words to describe Linda's role in moving the dog training and behaviour world forward so you'll just have to listen. On top of all that Corrin, Nat and Steve talk through the book and answer your Bookshelver questions in their own rambling style. Linda Facts:Linda Michaels, M.A., Psychology, author of the ground-breaking, best-seller, The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook— Featuring the Hierarchy of Dog Needs pioneers the “First, Do No Harm” ethics approach in dog training. With an advanced degree in psychology and animal behaviour, research conducted in behavioural neurobiology, and five years of shelter and rescue experience, Linda's work bridges a gap between science, dog trainers, and pet parents with hands-on skills with dogs, wolfdogs, and the famed Belyaev foxes. Linda tells us, “My shelter experience working with the most difficult behavioural cases helped lay the foundation for all of the work I do today in animal care and training, protecting both the physical and the emotional well-being of the heartbeats at our feet.”Linda is considered one of the modern-era, trailblazing experts and influencers in canine behaviour consulting and animal welfare advocacy. Her internationally acclaimed Hierarchy of Dog Need teaching tool, now translated into 14 languages, is endorsed by canine scientists and ethologists as well as trainers, new and seasoned, and is available FREE. The Hierarchy of Dog Needs offers a clear, dog-centric alternative to the outdated, teaching paradigms widely used today. The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook combines compassion with science in an easy-to-follow roadmap to success, providing answers to common and complex dog behaviour problems. Illustrating the most effective methods endorsed by the greatest minds in dog training and behaviour, dog lovers are taken on a journey to understanding and meeting their dog's needs. The first section of The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behaviour Handbook is devoted to detailing each item on the Hierarchy of Dog Needs. By addressing needs first, pet parents and trainers often find that many behaviour problems may all but disappear. The meticulously researched handbook tackles the most challenging issues faced by dog lovers and pet professionals, including: nutrition, veterinary and grooming visits, basic training skills, aggression, and separation anxiety. With a foreword by Dr. Marc Bekoff, co-founder with Jane Goodall of the Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the handbook is scientifically supported with 18 pages of scholarly journal citations and a detailed index. You may find Linda in international trade magazines, and as a featured expert in Psychology Today online, Newsweek online, Huffington Post Live, Wolf Dog Radio, as an APBC, Dog-Centered Care, Barking Up the Right Tree International Festival for Reactive Dogs, KIENO Summit, Puppy Blueprint, Dog Wisdom webinar presenter, and speaker at the inaugural Pet Professional Guild Summit on “Understanding Research—Making the Case for Force-free Dog Training.”Linda founded the wildly popular Do No Harm Dog Training Facebook group where you can easily find her, and recently launched the DoNoHarmDogTraining.com swag store.Links:Amazon Link to purchase The Do No Harm Dog Training and Behavior Handbook:https://www.amazon.com/dp/1732253706?ref_=cm_sw_r_mwn_dp_6R09BF50YG2ZBDZPKCHB&language=en-USThe Do No Harm Website & Store:https://www.donoharmdogtraining.com/DOGx Tickets:https://www.pact-dogs.com/dogx2024Subscribe to receive a weekly PACT Lunch:https://www.pact-dogs.com/

It's the greatest productivity debate of our time: how do we achieve work-life balance? Or maybe the real debate should be: is work-life balance even possible? Eric Barker, the author of Barking Up the Wrong Tree and now Plays Well With Others, doesn't think work-life balance is truly achievable. At least, not if you want the best possible results in a given field. The problem, he says, is that most of live an unbalanced life by accident. Because of the internet and the rapidly increasing pace of everything from the news cycle to the way we socialise, we're all doing too much of something, and not enough of something else. It's overwhelming, and we're constantly playing catchup. Eric's solution is to abandon balance, but to do it on purpose. Decide what you want to be really, really good at it, and accept that you won't be world-class in your other pursuits. Does punishment work with dogs? Dr. Ian Dunbar has spent five decades at the forefront of the industry as a vet, researcher and trainer, and he's channeled it all into his new book, "Barking Up The Right Tree." In this episode, we focus on the one chapter that is a master class on punishment. Rather than addressing the morality or ethics involved, Dunbar goes straight to the science: Is it effective? When we yell, jerk on the leash, buzz or shock our dogs, what does it teach them? Listen to find out.

Your host is Tobias Macey and today I'm interviewing Peter Voss about what is involved in making your AI applications more "human" Interview Introduction How did you get involved in machine learning? Can you start by unpacking the idea of "human-like" AI? How does that contrast with the conception of "AGI"? The applications and limitations of GPT/LLM models have been dominating the popular conversation around AI. How do you see that impacting the overrall ecosystem of ML/AI applications and investment? The fundamental/foundational challenge of every AI use case is sourcing appropriate data. What are the strategies that you have found useful to acquire, evaluate, and prepare data at an appropriate scale to build high quality models? When Dr. Ian Dunbar talks about dogs, it's impossible not to sit up and listen. His latest work, "Barking Up the Right Tree," is more than a book; it's a manifesto for compassionate canine companionship that promises to redefine our relationships with our four-legged friends. Tales of cows with personality and horses with heart remind us that the principles of positive reinforcement extend far beyond the backyard. Through personal anecdotes, like the transformation of an uncatchable horse named Pudding, we discover the patience and kindness necessary to train animals in a way that speaks to their nature, not against it. As we wrap up our time with Dr. Dunbar, we explore the revival of a classic puppy training program and the universal principles that apply not just to animal training, but to all aspects of life. The commitment to bettering the lives of pets—and by extension, their owners—is palpable, and the joy found in a well-behaved companion animal is a testament to the power of empathy and education. This week's conversation is with Eric Barker, a former Hollywood screen-writer turned author whose dedicated following of over half a million people look to Eric for his (often counter-intuitive) insights and research-backed advice on how to be great at life. In 2017, Eric penned his Wall Street Journal bestseller Barking Up the Wrong Tree, which reveals the extraordinary science behind what actually determines success and most importantly, how anyone can achieve it.However, over the last several years Eric pivoted to taking a deep dive into the science of relationships and recently published his newest bestseller, Plays Well with Others: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Relationships Is (Mostly) Wrong. And that's why I was so excited to sit down with Eric – if you've been following this podcast, you know I'm a big believer that relationships are foundational to exploring potential and achieving our very best… no one does it alone… through relationships, we become. So, it was a joy to speak with Eric about all things relationships – what we're getting wrong, the antidote to loneliness, how to cultivate deep friendships, love, communities, and so much more. I hope you leave this conversation with a new perspective on what a healthy relationship feels like, and… maybe even inspired to re-examine how you approach them.-----Please support our partners! We're able to keep growing and creating content for YOU because of their support.
