In episode 268 of iCantCU, I take you along on my latest trip to New York City, where I tested the accessibility of a new version of a financial app. The trip had its moments, from battling some equipment issues to a chaotic cab ride that had me questioning my life choices.  I also finally got to visit the Jackie Robinson Museum, something I've been looking forward to for years. Using my phone's assistive tech, I navigated the exhibits, but not without a few challenges.  I also talk about my thoughts on working in an open office—spoiler alert, it's not ideal for someone who relies on listening rather than seeing. And, of course, no trip to New York would be complete without a stop at Junior's for some cheesecake with Jane. Listen for all the details, a few laughs, and some insights into accessible tech. Dyslexia is a learning disability that affects millions of people around the world. It is characterized by difficulties in reading and understanding written language. People with dyslexia often struggle to recognize letters, words, and sentences, making it challenging for them to read fluently and comprehend what they are reading. However, thanks to advancements in technology, like MYdys, individuals with dyslexia can overcome these challenges and improve their reading skills.App helps dyslexic people readMYdys, developed by the French startup FACIL'iti, is an assistive technology app designed to help people with dyslexia read more effectively. While using the app, individuals can take a picture of a text, which is then scanned and converted into digital text. The app offers various customization options, such as changing the font, increasing the text size, and highlighting problematic letters in different colors. These features help dyslexic individuals trick their brains into recognizing letters and words more easily, ultimately improving their reading comprehension. The effectiveness of the MYdys app has been demonstrated through tests on heavily dyslexic individuals, who were able to understand significantly more of the text when using the app compared to reading without it. This improvement in reading comprehension can be life-changing for individuals with dyslexia, as it allows them to access and understand information that was previously difficult for them to process. The benefits of MYdysOne of the key benefits of the MYdys app is its accessibility. The app can be used on any smartphone, tablet, or Chromebook, making it a versatile tool that can be integrated into daily routines and educational settings. While the app is primarily designed for older individuals who are learning how to read and beyond, it can also be used by younger children with dyslexia, provided they have access to a device and some guidance on how to use the app.another great feature of the MYdys app is its text-to-speech functionality, which allows users to have the text read out loud to them in real-time. This feature not only helps individuals with dyslexia improve their reading skills but also provides support for those who may have difficulty reading due to other factors, such as language barriers. With the ability to translate text into 75 different languages instantly, the app ensures that users can access information in a way that is most comfortable and understandable for them.In addition to helping individuals with dyslexia improve their reading skills, the MYdys app also has the potential to train their brains to recognize and overcome their specific challenges with reading. By using the app regularly, individuals may develop strategies and techniques that can be applied beyond the app, leading to long-term improvements in their reading abilities. Conclusion: A great way to improve reading for dyslexiaThe MYdys app is accessible to the public for free download on both iOS and Android devices. Users can use the app up to 30 times a month at no cost, with the option to subscribe for unlimited access for a nominal fee of $2.99 per month. Mat Bowtell is the founder and CEO of Free 3D Hands, an Australian charity that designs and 3D prints hands and assistive devices. The hands are provided for free, to children and adults all around the world and they even pay the postage! Mat freely shares his designs under an open-source licence so others can make and repair their own devices and to encourage further innovation. Mat's goal is to significantly bring down the cost of assistive technology to help those who currently cannot access or afford it. Mat was working as an engineer for Toyota in Australia and Japan before being made redundant in 2017 when the automotive industry shut down. He had made one hand, for one kid, with one 3D printer whilst he was still employed. This grew to two printers on the dining table, then six in the spare room! It was not long after his final day at work that Mat was named the Australian of the Year – Vic Local Hero for 2018 and he then knew what he was going to do with his future. Mat and his very understanding wife Yuka worked for two years as volunteers, living off his redundancy payout, to design and 3D print hands for kids. He relocated with his family to his hometown of Phillip Island and was working out of a single car garage. In 2019 the opportunity arose to lease a factory and through generous support Mat was able to establish Free 3D Hands as registered charity in Australia. He has now made hundreds of hands and assistive devices for people all around the world. In October 2020 he released his new Kinetic Hand design under an open source licence and to date it has been downloaded over 4000* times! There are over a billion people in the world who require some form of assistive technology and this number is set to double by 2030*. Currently only 1 in 10* people have access to the products they need. Mat believes that by openly sharing technology and ideas and by collaborating with others, more people will be able to access or afford the technology they need.To learn more about Free 3D Hands, please visit: https://free3dhands.org/--As always, thanks so much for tuning into Breaking Brave! This week, Editor-in-Chief Elliot Williams and Kristina Panos have much in the way of Hackaday news -- the Op Amp Challenge is about halfway over, and there are roughly three weeks left in the Assistive Tech challenge of the 2023 Hackaday Prize. Show us what you've got on the analog front, and then see what you can do to help people with disabilities to live better lives! Kristina is still striking out on What's That Sound, which this week honestly sounded much more horrendous and mechanical than the thing it actually is. Then it's on to the hacks, beginning with the we-told-you-so that even Google believes that open source AI will out-compete both Google's own AI and the questionably-named OpenAI. From there we take a look at a light-up breadboard, listen to some magnetite music, and look inside a pair of smart sunglasses. Finally, we talk cars, beginning with the bleeding edge of driver-less. Then we go back in time to discuss in-vehicle record players of the late 1950s. Check out the links over on Hackaday to follow along, and as always, tell us what you think about this episode in  the comments!

Welcome to Double Tap Canada, the tech show with a twist... After their recent trip to Canada, the DTC team is interested in this week's story regarding the ArriveCan app. This app was created to help speed up the process when entering Canada. However, there have been complaints that it's having the opposite effect, with border staff spending a lot of the time being tech support for people struggling to use the app. Just how helpful are digital documents when it comes to travel? Also, Steven is not happy with the assistance offered at most airports. Is there a better option for us to get support while travelling? Mark Zuckerberg has recently been showcasing the work the his company has been doing when it comes to Virtual Reality. With numerous prototype headsets and some interesting comments on the state of VR, is it finally time to get excited again? And, as ever, should we even care, as visually impaired people, when it comes to VR? Oh, and Steven has finally bought the worst thing ever. Is it time for an intervention?
