What began as a standard interview with Austin City Limits photographer Scott Newton, exploring his past and infamous concert shots, evolved into something unexpectedly profound. As our conversation unfolded, I found myself disarmed by Scott's wisdom, opening up about my own creative process and doubts behind a fan music video I directed. The video, set to the song "Sea of the Edge" by Austin-based band The Bright Light Social Hour, became a case study for our discussion on artistic challenges and growth. What followed was an inspirational pep talk I never knew I needed. Scott's words are deeply moving and motivational, and I hope they resonate with you as powerfully as they did with me.I'm Kyle Lamont, host of Concert Cast. Since the release of their 2010 eponymous debut, whose tracks have racked up millions of streams, The Bright Light Social Hour has become a big part of Austin’s – and by extension – KUTX’s musical character. Even after all these years (and a lineup change that keeps the core duo of Jackie O’Brien and Curtis […] The post The Bright Light Social Hour: “Lifers Only” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.
The Bright Light Social Hour founders Jackie O'Brien and Curtis Roush are here to talk about the Austin Psych Scene, their deep connection to live performance and their long-standing support of important social reform issues. They'll also be hitting the road hard once again this Fall in support of their upcoming new album, Emergency Leisure, set for release on August 2. Among the many social causes they support, TBLSH brings attention to The Last Prisoner Project which seeks to fight for those incarcerated for cannabis offenses; the band recently released a humorous, tongue-in-cheek video to highlight the perceived "dangers" of cannabis use and is donating all proceeds to this worthy Not-for Profit Organization. TBLSH is literally everywhere, and their music has been featured in a variety of TV soundtracks, videos, and even Nintendo video games!! These guys do it all while continuing their efforts to "start a conversation" about local and national social causes. Join us on Roadcase for this lively conversation with Jackie and Curtis to learn more about these intriguing artists and how you can help support their efforts!!For more info:https://www.thebrightlightsocialhour.com/For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comContact: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
Typically around the tail end of SXSW music week, there’s a lot of local magic. It could be Bill Murray hopping behind a dive bar and serving up whatever he wants, or a relatively undiscovered up-and-comer getting an unexpected big break. But today we’re talking about the Austin representation, something that can get easily eclipsed […]

Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 820 with Ray Wylie Hubbard recorded at his home in Wimberley, TX. This show was originally released on 7/12/19. Below are my original notes form the show. Hello friends! Legendary singer/songwriter, Americana hero, author, Ray Wylie Hubbard is my guest for episode 820! Ray's discography and career speak for themselves. His adventurous life has been documented on tons of albums and even an autobiography, A Life... Well, Lived. Though his career started in honky-tonks in the 70's and he had a hit when Jerry Jeff Walker covered his irreverent barroom classic, "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother" in 1973, by the mid 80's his partying ways had left him lost and at the end of his rope. Then he sobered up, took control over his life and career. He started running his label and organization with his wife and partner, Judy and his career has flourished. We have an amazing conversation about his life and career including crazy and amazing things like, being bachelor #2 on "The Dating Game", having Ringo Starr play on his upcoming album, his songwriting process, social media, collaborations with The Bright Light Social Hour, The Bluebonnets, Jesse Dayton and others and much more! I had an amazing time getting to know Ray. I know you will too. To find Ray's music, tour schedule or book, go to raywylie.com. Let's get down! If you feel so inclined. A recent KUTX Song of the Day featured an incredible collaborative work by two ATX badasses, The Bright Light Social Hour and Riders Against the Storm. On the surface, this version of “The Sheriff” is an extension of the previous BLSH piece. But RAS’s powerful imagery is added fuel as the story unfolds. This time, […]
KUTX turns ten next year. And two groups that’ve been glued to our hip the whole way through are The Bright Light Social Hour and Riders Against the Storm. They’re both must-hear Austin mainstays for a damn good reason; The Bright Light Social Hour continues to innovate a sweet-yet-sinister indie-psych sound while Riders Against the […]
This episode features Jack O'Brien from The Bright Light Social Hour. Since their first record came out in 2010, Bright Light has been grinding out a career with energy, fervor and unbridled enthusiasm. They've evolved, lost members, gained members, updated Wikipedia and, above all else, focused on the music. It's been a joy watching them over the years. Everything Bright Light - Click Here
On an atypically gray and rainy day in Texas, we can all appreciate the warmth of some good indie-style illumination. And celebrating the 11th anniversary of their eponymous debut this weekend is longtime KUTX favorite The Bright Light Social Hour, the psych-pop connoisseurs who’ve graced both Studio 1A and KUTX at the Four Seasons with […]
On the latest episode of "Ear Buds", we talk about avoiding heroin, Lucas's ever-expanding ego, we both get major tone-bones and eventually we get to all our thoughts on "Space is Still the Place" by Bright Light Social Hour. and OF COURSE, Lucas said the wrong time for our Friday livestreams. They're at 7pm Central on our Twitch Channel! Link in BIO :)
Big news from Austin’s Slomo Drags this morning; the indie-glam-pop-rock group just announced their new EP, Twin Absorber. The record is co-produced by Danny Reisch (whose work has helped elevate the likes of fellow Studio 1A veterans Shearwater, Bright Light Social Hour, Tele Novella, and Erika Wennerstrom) and Quiet Company contributor Matt Parmenter, so you […]

On today's episode, I'm joined by recording engineer/producer and one of the founding members of Austin's psychedelic rock/ cosmic soul band, Curtis Roush of The Bright Light Social Hour. Curtis and I talk about music and the formation of TBLSH, his experiences with Austin organizations, HAAM and SIMS and how his band went to band therapy at one point to support them with mental health, as well sharing stories from our personal experiences with psychedelics. Over the last 16 years, Curtis has experienced highs and lows, and his vulnerability and openness to share his personal journey with mental health, led to me sharing one of my personal stories that I've never shared publicly until now. I want you to know that this was something I didn't necessarily plan on sharing but the timing in the moment felt right, and I'm grateful to Curtis for not only being an advocate for women, but being able to go there in our conversations and address issues like this head on.Please enjoy this very special episode with Curtis Roush of The Bright Light Social Hour, and if you could please rate, leave a review and share this episode with others!Guest: Curtis RoushInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/curtisroush/Band: https://www.instagram.com/tblsh/Website: https://www.thebrightlightsocialhour.comMake sure to tune in every Wednesday to watch new episodes of “Concert Queen Connect” and make sure to ‘like' and ‘subscribe' to our YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbNiyZMWKbK2pH4J2rdj69Q?sub_confirmation=1Host: Clarissa CardenasIG: https://www.instagram.com/atxconcertqueen/ Website: http://www.theconcertqueen.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theconcertqueenVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/Concert-QueenListen to our podcast:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/concert-queen-connect/id1538535270Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6y3m5SLW5CnBvBpvh7cXgT?si=dN1Vlr9eQf2diQFrPIffugProducer: Steve Souza (http://www.souzamedia.com)IG : https://www.instagram.com/the.souz/
