Jack Barksdale inspires me about the next generations of music made , and especially here in Texas. A 17 yr. old folk/Americana singer/songwriter Jack started performing original music at the age of nine and has already shared the stage with Wynonna Judd, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Junior Brown, John Fullbright, and Hayes . He's definitely an “old soul” that paints his way into your mind with his prolific lyrics. He's headlining the inaugural Renegade Revival Music Fest May 17th at the Georgetown Palace Theater. And proceeds benefit HAAM of Austin helping musicians with healthcare. Listen this week to our interview and you too will be inspired by this young Troubadour. Originally aired 05/04/2025 on 95.3 FM KHYI the Range in Dallas, TX.

Continuing on with my podcast series in which I sit down and talk with my friends who do dope things, on this episode I get to sit down with one of the dopest, Coka Trevino! I have known Coka for some years through the music scene here in Austin, we both tend to like good musics and such, and I have watched her ascent in the Austin art community from the moment we met. She is a super trooper in this city, state and world, bringing people together and showcasing artists who she finds to be amazing, and helping to give them the platforms that they need and deserve in a city that hasn't always embraced everyone equally - though through the work of many it is getting much better now. Seeing Austin open up and diversify (slowly but surely) is a beautiful thing and I am so thankful for organizations like The Projecto and Big Medium (and DAWA, Epistrophy Arts, HAAM y mas) for all of the work that they put in. On this episode we talk with Coka about moving to Austin from Monterrey, Mexico and her history in both cities, the Austin Studio Tour, life in Texas and how good it can be despite it also being quite fxxked, all sorts of things that two friends might talk about. That's what we are doing here with Talk So Real. Please like, subscribe, whatever you do on the internet and/or your phone. Also, as always, please tell a friend to tell a friend about Talk So Real... @theprojectoatx - @bigmediumaustin - @austinstudiotour - @texasbiennial

In spite of expectations of record demand throughout the summer, ERCOT is expressing confidence that it will be able to meet that demand. Experts say further diversity among power suppliers is the key to future reliability. Gas prices are continuing to rise past record highs - Austin's average gas price could hit $5 per gallon soon. Early voting continues through Friday in the primary runoffs - Texans who did not vote in either party's primary in March can vote, and have the choice of voting for either party's candidates. Amidst continuing staffing shortages that threaten Austin's public pool opening schedule next month, current lifeguards are keeping up the pressure for a pay raise. Delays in security screenings at ABIA have crept back up - lines were out the door again over last weekend. HAAM - the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians - is seeking a $1 million allocation from Austin's city budget to cover funding shortfalls. Austin has been ranked the #4 best city in the U.S. in which to start a career, and #2 in Texas for our quality of parks. Meanwhile Williamson County has been named the richest county in the state measured by median income, which is now over $87,000 per year. A UT Tyler study has found marijuana legalization to be more popular in Texas than any of our top elected officials. The former home of Austin Java, and more recently the Barton Springs location of Ski Shores, has been re-opened by McGuire Moorman Lambert as their second location of Lou's. The September 10 visit by Alabama to Texas at DKR may be an early game, with a kickoff time of 11am. NFL legend and Westlake Chapparal Drew Brees has been shown the door at NBC after only one season as an analyst. And Gorillaz has announced a local show, at the Moody Center on September 30.
Local COVID hospitalizations are now very close to crossing into Stage 4 range, but dropping slower than previously expected - the Omicron subvariant BA.2 could be a factor. University of Texas faculty are alarmed at Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick's comments about The Liberty Institute - a new conservative-backed think tank at UT - and worry that it is aimed at suppressing the accurate teaching of history. Austin Water has been flushing lines in south Austin after residents complained of foul smelling and tasting water - it apparently has nothing to do with the recent boil-water notice. Capital Metro expects to restore local transit service to full capacity by late this summer. Austin Bergstrom International Airport saw its fourth-busiest year in 2021 and its busiest December ever at the end of last year. Houston's Fajita Pete's opens it first Austin location with goals to open five more. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians or HAAM has purchased an office building on South First and expects to open it by this fall. The DeLorean sportscar is making a comeback as an electric vehicle and its HQ will be in San Antonio - Austin is a possibility for the location of DeLorean manufacturing. Nine local craft brewers take gold medals in the first Texas Craft Brewers Cup with Black Star Co-op winning Best Small Brewery and Real Ale Brewing winning Best Large Brewery. And a cold front is inbound, cooling down our Friday, prior to a weirdly warm Monday and Tuesday next week.
Our local COVID key indicator has leveled at about the same rate it did at the end of the first two major pandemic waves: around 20, in the lower half of Stage 3 range. Early voting begins: Prop A for Austinites, school bonds for Williamson County, civic bonds for Buda, and eight State Constitutional amendments for all Texans. Wider indications of organized theft of cell phones at the Austin City Limits Music Festival lead to three more arrests and almost 300 phones recovered. Austin FC and Texas Longhorns both drop matchups over the weekend, while Texas RB Bijan Robinson starts to draw Heisman speculation. HAAM gets a new CEO. Celis Brewing is set to open the CTX Beer Garden, a new outdoor space on its brewery property on Metric. Austin makes Travel And Leisure's Top 15 Cities in the U.S., but gets beat out by San Antonio and Fort Worth. And one more cool day today before a warmup later this week.
You’ve heard your Austin Music Minute host say this before, and it certainly applies now more than ever: Step up and represent. Season two of the My Top Records podcast starts today. We've got Mitch Ballard for your listening pleasure. Mitch moved from Nashville to Austin a couple few years ago to start the BMI office. This office reminds me why Austin is Austin. Organization like HAAM and SIMS. No other city has such a focus on their artistic integrity. Makes me proud to be a 7th generation Texan. Before Mitch opened the BMI office here in Austin, he’d been called the Swiss Army Knife of the country music business. He started off by turning down a music scholarship to North Texas because he didn’t really want to play the trumpet anymore. He was a tour manager for BJ Thomas for 8 years. He owned a website building company for musicians and then an LED concert company. Yeah, he knows the music biz. I love podcasts like this on because I don’t really have to talk. I threatened to trash my Encyclopedia of Country music. What would I need that for when I can just call Mitch? If you don’t mind heading over to Apple podcasts and giving us a review, we’d sure appreciate it awful good! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-top-five-records/id1494022573 Cheers! https://www.instagram.com/mitch_ballard/ https://www.facebook.com/mitchballard https://thebiggunshow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/thebiggunshowband/ https://www.instagram.com/thebiggunshowband/ https://www.youtube.com/thebiggunshowband
On today's episode, I'm joined by recording engineer/producer and one of the founding members of Austin's psychedelic rock/ cosmic soul band, Curtis Roush of The Bright Light Social Hour. Curtis and I talk about music and the formation of TBLSH, his experiences with Austin organizations, HAAM and SIMS and how his band went to band therapy at one point to support them with mental health, as well sharing stories from our personal experiences with psychedelics. Over the last 16 years, Curtis has experienced highs and lows, and his vulnerability and openness to share his personal journey with mental health, led to me sharing one of my personal stories that I've never shared publicly until now. I want you to know that this was something I didn't necessarily plan on sharing but the timing in the moment felt right, and I'm grateful to Curtis for not only being an advocate for women, but being able to go there in our conversations and address issues like this head on.Please enjoy this very special episode with Curtis Roush of The Bright Light Social Hour, and if you could please rate, leave a review and share this episode with others!Guest: Curtis RoushInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/curtisroush/Band: https://www.instagram.com/tblsh/Website: https://www.thebrightlightsocialhour.comMake sure to tune in every Wednesday to watch new episodes of “Concert Queen Connect” and make sure to ‘like' and ‘subscribe' to our YouTube channel:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbNiyZMWKbK2pH4J2rdj69Q?sub_confirmation=1Host: Clarissa CardenasIG: https://www.instagram.com/atxconcertqueen/ Website: http://www.theconcertqueen.com Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/theconcertqueenVenmo: https://account.venmo.com/u/Concert-QueenListen to our podcast:Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/concert-queen-connect/id1538535270Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6y3m5SLW5CnBvBpvh7cXgT?si=dN1Vlr9eQf2diQFrPIffugProducer: Steve Souza (http://www.souzamedia.com)IG : https://www.instagram.com/the.souz/
Hello friends! Austin Music Awards "Best Photographer" winner and a guy who's shot everyone that plays music in Austin, Ismael Quintanilla III is my guest for episode 1037! Ismael has taken the time during the pandemic to document the Austin music scene under quarantine in his gorgeous new portrait book, "I Am Here All Day" available now in hardback or digitally at iq3photo.com/iamhereallday. "I AM Here All Day" showcases the state of the Austin music community through images of artists and their stories — written between March and August of 2020 — about their experiences during the rapid onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The narratives offer distinctly different emotional perspectives, which, threaded together, dictate the flow of the book. This anthology proves how, even as we all take our own paths at different paces, our community is inevitably united in its determination to proliferate creativity. This is a story of resilience, of Austin musicians rising to the challenge of making impactful art against all odds. 118 portraits including Jackie Venson, Walker Lukens, Riders Against The Storm, Audrey Campbell of Pleasure Venom, ME and many, many more. Proceeds from the sales go to HAAM, SIMS Foundation, DAWA, Banding Together ATX, Free Lunch, Niñas Arriba. Great conversation with this very wonderful and talented man. Enjoy! Let's get down! More info at www.fororagainstpod.com, and listen wherever fine podcasts are purveyed! Our cause is HAAM - which provides access to affordable healthcare for Austin’s low-income, working musicians, with a focus on prevention and wellness. Many Austin musicians are self-employed and have no access to health insurance or basic healthcare. They often work multiple jobs and struggle to pay for food, clothing and shelter, with nothing left for healthcare. They have helped over 5,600 musicians access over $98 million dollars in healthcare value since they began in 2005. These include routine dental work, doctor visits and prescriptions, psychiatric counseling sessions, eye exams, out-patient procedures, specialist referrals, hearing screenings and more. For more info check out myhaam.orgWe've donated to them, and if you send proof of a donation to bundlebuddiespodcast@gmail.com we will shout you out on the pod! This week we played...Last WordOverlandCannon FatherAbout the podcast.....Welcome to bundle buddies, we are playing through the ENTIRE itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality. What is the itch.io Bundle for Racial Justice and Equality? Jackson Walker's contribution to the communities in which we live and work goes far beyond just legal counsel. In our Austin office, partner Tim Taylor works with the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) to provide access to affordable healthcare for Austin's low-income working musicians – with a focus on prevention and wellness. With the cancellation of SXSW and the social distancing rules that closed music venues in Austin, HAAM's work is needed more than ever. Tim discusses his role in HAAM and how they are helping Austin musicians in this time of need. Check out the video of "Someday We'll Be Together" by Robert Harrison and Suzanna Choffel for more information on HAAM. We survived 2 weekends at ACL Festival! And we couldn't be happier about it! Thanks to HAAM for inviting us to talk about their important efforts in helping Austin musicians be healthy contributors to our city's cultural identity. Austin music veterans AJ Vallejo and Kendall Beard brought Love & Chaos to the ACL Cares Stage, where we talked about how they collaborate together and what we can expect from them in the near future. AJ also shared how HAAM helped him during his recovery from a heart attack a decade ago, and how they continue to help him to this day. We look forward to Kendall's new album (produced by AJ), coming out on October 19th. It's called 'Here Comes Trouble'. And be sure to visit HAAM starting November 1 for open enrollment if you are a local musician. Don't be a "young invincible". Take care of yourself. Enjoy an episode that was as live as it gets, right in the middle of Zilker Park during ACL craziness! And listen to the end for a couple live, acoustic songs from Love & Chaos. #loveandfaircitymusicchaos #myhaam
What a weekend! We had the honor of attending the ACL Festival this year with our podcast, and the double honor of interviewing our friend Sydney Wright. The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) invited us to their program, 'How HAAM Saves Lives' and we took that opportunity to talk to Sydney about her recovery from a hit and run accident earlier this year. Sydney is all heart and her talents always shine through. We're so happy to see her getting back to what she loves to do. In fact, she will be releasing her album 'Seiche' on November 9 at Cheer Up Charlies. Be there! We started off the episode with a recap of our ACL experience before moving on to the Sydney interview (18:47). Keep listening til the end to hear Sydney's new single, 'Time of Night'. And if you're a local musician, be sure to check in with HAAM when open enrollment begins on November 1. #bionicleg #myhaam

Do you know what $50,000 in cash looks like? Rikki Hardy, HAAM Director of Marketing and Events, sure does (hint: it's gross). And she's hoping to see a lot more on HAAM Day, September 11 in Austin. Rikki, along with Katie Crowley, joined the show to tell us how the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians helps local musicians with their healthcare. They are in the final stages of preparing HAAM Day, their biggest donation day of the year. If you're in Austin, check out some of the hundreds of bands that will be performing across the city on September 11 to support HAAM. Rikki told us about all the plans for that day, and she made the case for all local musicians to visit HAAM for their healthcare needs. It's an incredible resource for our city and our music culture. Get covered! Support music! #theyounginvincible #annualreports

It's hard to believe that we've already been doing The Goose Collective Podcast for one year, but it's been just that. In that year we've gained a couple thousand listens from *50* (!!!!) different countries, which is a far cry from the 5 or 10 friends we thought we'd be sharing our mixes with. For everyone that's listened and supported us, thank you. There's big plans in store for the podcast in the next year as we hope to expand our reach and the scope of the platform in general. This week Haam Sarris drops a real heavy (surprise) ripping set with tracks from techno legends like Enrico Sngiuliano, Wehbba, ANNA, Cirez D, Adam Beyer, Bart Skills & many more. This week we’re introducing something new to The Goose Collective Podcast - an occasional podcast series titled ‘A Journey Through’ where we dive deep into our favourite and most influential artists’ catalogs. The first entry into ‘A Journey Through’ features none other than the current Queen of techno, ANNA. ANNA is particularly special to me, Haam Sarris, as she was the very first *artist* that I became a fan of as I entered the world of house and techno music. It was her shift from groovy tech house to the dark bouncy side of the genre, right into the ripping techno she’s producing now that led me down the same path. Without her incredible producing, I may never have been a part of the scene like I am now. Taking a stab at covering all parts of ANNA’s diverse catalog was no light undertaking, as her decade of producing has covered everything from groovy house tracks like ‘Leave Me’, to dark bouncy techno tracks like ‘Six Figures’, and now to her signature, dominant, hard-hitting techno brand with heavy tracks like ‘Hidden Beauties’ and ‘Far Beyond’. So without further ado, turn up the volume and enjoy this 2-and-a-half hour monster of a set that tries it’s best to scratch the surface of the immense talent showcased in each track by ANNA.
Blanch and Haam Sarris are back with an hour and a half of groovy b2b goodness. #justgooseit
