POPULARITY
Are you ready for some hip, cool, under-the-radar blues?? Be prepared to be blown away by the smooth guitar and killer vocals of Shane Guerrette.Surrounded by music his whole life, he picked up the guitar at a young age, and enjoyed early success posting covers of popular songs in his style to YouTube. However it never felt quite fulfilling and started to write and record his own music. Which was also immediately successful.Shane's writing and performances are a throwback to a time filled with coolness, and he seems to produce a sound well beyond his years somehow. He's even had his music featured in a Brunello Cuccinelli & Oliver Peoples sunglass ad.He's just starting a tour supporting Black Joe Lewis, and will be releasing new music heading in to the spring. 517. Part 2 of our interview with Windy Counsell Petre about Louisiana author Grace King. “Grace King was an American author of Louisiana stories, history, and biography, and a leader in historical and literary activities. King began her literary career as a response to George Washington Cable negative portrayal of Louisiana Creoles. King desired to create a sympathetic portrayal of Louisianians and Southerners based on her observations and experiences. King viewed herself as a type of representative for the region, although she herself was not in fact a Creole. King also became a representative for Southern women. In her literary works, King focuses primarily on women and women's issues in Reconstruction and its aftermath. King also emphasizes how race and class affected the lives of women” (Wikipedia). Co-hosted by Revs. Abigail Schairer & Stephanie Anne JohnsonWhile most of us would rather not talk about race, gender, sexuality, and size in spiritual spaces, it is absolutely necessary. Why? Because every single one of us is living this life in a body. Our skin color, size, sexuality, and gender impact how we move through the world, including spiritual spaces. Some might say that pointing out differences creates more division. It's actually the unwillingness to address these differences that causes division. Join us as we reach across identities to explore the challenges and opportunities of diversity with curiosity and respect. These monthly conversations with Rev. Abigail Schairer, Stephanie Anne Johnson, and a special guest each month is hosted by the Center for Spiritual Living Seattle.About Stephanie Anne JohnsonA singer's talent is complete when they can bring a crowded dive bar to a collective hush and also get one of the biggest audiences on the planet to a collective standing ovation. Stephanie Anne Johnson is that special singer who can don a cowboy hat and sing over a slide as old timers weep. And they have wowed judges on the immensely popular NBC TV series, The Voice, showcasing their gifts. Perhaps it's no surprise that Johnson is so affecting. Their mantra, after all, is “Find your joy and go there.” Their prowess exudes whether they are singing the Black national anthem - “Lift Every Voice And Sing” - to a packed auditorium or whether they're cooing acoustic lullabies to Saturday night tavern regulars. Their music, which is rooted in all that's American, expresses the pain of the past, the roots of the down home and the hope that hard work will lead to proper reward. The latest LP, Take This Love, is a blend of Loretta Lynn and Valerie June. It's a stunning catalogue of surprise and satisfaction. Stephanie Anne Johnson has opened for acts that include political figure Bernie Sanders, and artists such as Mavis Staples, Chaka Khan, Ani DiFranco, Joseph, Cedric Burnside, and Black Joe Lewis. Stephanie will be releasing a new album ‘Jewels' on April 7th, 2023.About Rev. Abigail SchairerRev. Abigail Schairer is Associate Minister at CSL Seattle and founder of Sister Spirit and NextGEN Retreats. She draws inspiration from the great spiritual masters of all religions, which she integrates with practical guidance in her speaking and teaching. Rev. Abigail believes we are here to help create the life God intended us to have – one of absolute joy, complete abundance, and freedom.

There's a chance we'll see more this week, and slightly cooler temps - we may not hit 100 again until after the July 4 holiday.

DEV WULF The story of the native Houstonian begins with his hometown as the opening backdrop for a long journey in musical identity. From playing in bars on Saturdays and churches on Sundays, the Texicana frontman would gain a versatile understanding of multiple genres spanning from rock, hip-hop, blues, and country. Since his move to Dallas in 2008, the Americana singer would go on to open for national acts including Shane McDonald, Leagues, Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Sir Earl Toon (Kool & the Gang), and Grady Spencer & the Work while performing with the band and as himself. While continuing his active work with Texicana, he is currently sitting in as a lead guitarist and vocalist for rapper, Moses Uvere. TEXICANA! “What would happen if we started a band together?” As Chris J Norwood and Dev Wulf recall, that's the resonating question at a round table in an old East Dallas bar; just audibly above an old cash-operated jukebox. Lakewood Landing would be the birthplace of a new idea between a trio of musicians and a few beers. The buzzing room of ideas would later evolve into an Americana outfit with joining members, Chris Pitts and Kelly Huffman, offering a unique rhythm section drawing from folk, rock, country, and jazz. Starting with little known icons, Big Star and Mudcrutch as influencing introductions, Texicana's early releases gave insight to their creative beginning with cover tunes, followed by their debut EP, No Good Reason. The Dallas Observer describes Texicana's nostalgic Americana and bluesy rock “as good for the soul,” during a time when COVID-19 closed down the country. Their latest offering, “Little Bit of Trouble,” continues to offer that good-for-the-soul feeling with songs that, as Central Track put it, “…feel like a trip down Elm Street with the windows down.” Texicana has gone on to win Best Folk & Americana Act and Best New Act of 2020 by the Dallas e-magazine Central Track, nominated Best Americana Act by the Dallas Observer, and winner of 91.7 KXT's Tiny Cake Contest. They've shared the stage with national acts Grace Potter, Devon Gilfillian, Black Joe Lewis, Southern Avenue, and Grady Spencer & The Work. Their EP, “Little Bit of Trouble,” is the latest to be released by Texicana and is available digitally wherever music is available. Chase Wessel's musical journey will keep you on the edge of your seat. From a trumpeter on scholarship at UNC, to a sound person, to a Music Business Major at CU Denver, to a couch surfer, to doing backlines on Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel.... did you catch all that? Levitt Denver puts on 50 free concerts each summer that include artists big and small across all genres of music. Some of last years guests include: The Bright Light Social Hour, Greyhounds, Reverend Horton Heat and Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears. Oh.. and he also runs his own Kettle Korn business with his wife and two young boys. You can see their truck at Levitt concerts and other locations around Denver. Marleah and James talk about the Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears (with Annabelle Chairlegs and Yella Belly) concert they saw at The Bell House on 8-16-19. Marleah expresses her always high-key appreciation for meaningful lyrics (especially one she heard that acknowledges that often times, when one thing gets better, something else gets worse...and that's ok). James digs into extolling the virtues of one of his favorite genres of music, that bluesy southern rock, and the lap steel guitar. So.. . I graduated. And then took a few weeks to relax and pack up and move (not in that order) - goodbye Brooklyn, goodbye Ditmas, goodbye undergrad, goodbye BC, goodbye lab mates and knowing what I'm doing. Hello Pittsburgh, hello Carnegie, hello folks I don't know, hello a slower life, a safer town, a slice of hope, a machine to kill fascists. Lastly, my adopted grandfather (and volunteer geneologist) has gone on to the other side. He is remembered fondly and in terms not suited to this genre of delivery. But his passing is noted and is, itself, passed over in silence. King Creosote - Bootprints | I've featrued them before here and this is another standout track of theirs, really good energy combined with a slick parsed down delivery, makes this into a toe tapping tune worthy of running from the cops over ala some trainspotting montage. Bell X1 - The Great Defector | This has been kicking around my que for a bit. I love the psuedo-Talking Heads open delivery and heart on the sleeve self confession over matters mundane. Too bad the album doesn't match the single. Black Pus - Juggernaut | Heavy man, real f'n heavy. Francisca Valenzuela - Quiero Verte Mas | Catchy tune with nice guggle bum pop hooks. Frazey Ford - Blue Streak Mama | It takes a real solid piece to slow it down and still keep you going, inbetween the vocalist's low key delivery and the backburner walking rhythm this songs has got it going on. M. Ward - Flaming Heart | Oldie but goodie Blackbird Blackbird - Give You Everything | Nothing says summer like oversaturated keyboards with afro-pop jangle melodies and empty, ambitionless lyrics. Very early-esque MGMT. Black Joe Lewis & the Honey Bears - Humpin' | I'd actually meant to include Joe Lewis in another post but had to skip over it, this track got shunted in because of the low down funk it brings is just too much to pass up. 1,2,3 - Going Away Party | Song title releavance plus locale relocation - oh yes, I went there. Barclay James Harvest - Taking Some Time On | I really, really got into this track from BJH's 1970 debut. The psych'd out lyrics (For those who feel inclined / to talk about their mind) combined with the extended jam with roiling drum swells (unironic cowbell!) and swirling guitar (the jam happens mid song and as a closer, those damn hippies) add up to a reason to put on paisely. Jan & Dean - Heart And Soul | A solid pop gem from '61 with ascerbic undercurrents - dig the flat delivery on the chorus (much too thrilling). The song actually seems to pull out all the stops in the hook department featuring more change ups than an early era TMBG tune. Peter Wolf Crier - Crutch & Cane | What is this song about? Zanzibar? Freedom from hang-ups? Catchy as hell though. Charlie Mars - Listen to the Darkside | On a side note me and the babe and Nick (from pgh) caught Super8 at the theatre. Babe caught on to the Goonies/ET/Cloverfield mashup before any of us knew that was a thing. I think the zombie movie inside the movie is supposed to represent how Spielberg's early work has trapped him, turning himself into the movie which would not die. It is meta plus good, but you knew that already, right? Balmorhea - Clamor | You know what else happened? I got a drafting table off craigslist (of course) any way this fellow Steve Geist, nice kid, he's got it for sale for $40 so I go over and he's got a MoCCA poster with Craig Thompson's work on it - we chat about that a bit. Steve is gradu-macated from CMU and is off to Austin (stomping grounds of Balmorhea) to design UI. I am proud to have such a prestigious lineage for a draftign table. Take care out there man and have some fun. "Scandalous" is the second album from this Texas based party that is equal parts soul and garage rock.
Hazy with a sore throat, Uncle Weed documents journies to the legendary Salt Lick bar-b-q for a slice of rural Texas, plus breakfast oysters, trip to riverside green belt, and rocking out to Black Joe Lewis and the Honey Bears at the Twitter party at The Parish. Plus riffs about drought, reasons for free beer, Big … Continue reading Fleeting Memories of Bar-B-Q and Soul – Choogle On! #90 →
I'm sure by now most people have found one or two albums from the year that have found their way on repeat more than the rest. Even though the year is far from over its pretty safe to say that I have declared my winners. The first album that really stood out for me was The Dead Weather's debut ‘Horehound'. Although I was first disappointed to hear that the Raconteurs wouldn't be touring again. Jack White's new project did not disappoint and easily swooped in to fill the void. This album is rock solid all the way through and, yes, I am working on finding a concert to podcast. The second album I picked up just recently and first came into my radar on the Austin City Limits free sampler that I blogged about in my Big Ass Austin City Limits post. This short exposure to Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears was quickly followed up by reading about their performance from the festival, in of all places, a blog on ESPN. If you are into music, basketball or just like reading witty musings check out Paul Shirley's blog on ESPN's The Life, where I read his first hand account of the festival. I used to watch Paul play forward for the Iowa State Cyclones, but I think even non alums can appreciate his entertaining articles. I do feel slightly bad for the people trying to watch the festival from behind him. The music for this episode comes from a concert that Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears played in Charlotte, North Carolina on June 15th earlier this year. If you like the music of James Brown its almost a sure bet that you will dig these guys. The sound quality of this recording is a tad gritty compared to some of the other shows I've posted but seems to fit the type of gritty soul music that this band plays.
