Starting on the East coast, bringing a dog on tour, and a healthy mix of ballads and upbeat songs. Molly Burch Molly Burch's “Daydreamer”- https://www.omnianmusicgroup.com/products/daydreamer "Molly Burch was exposed to the arts at an early age. Growing up in Los Angeles with a writer/producer father and a casting director mother, Burch's childhood was filled with old Hollywood musicals and the sounds of Patsy Cline, Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. After finding her voice in adolescence, Burch packed up for the University of North Carolina in Asheville to study Jazz Vocal Performance. “I was always really interested in singing before songwriting. I didn't have the confidence to write,” Molly says, “Initially it was more about finding the right songs to complement my voice.” And that voice is the first thing you'll notice on Burch's debut album, Please Be Mine. It's smoky, with an incredible range, effortlessly evocative of her early influences. It was in Asheville where Burch would meet guitarist Dailey Toliver, who plays on her debut, and who inspired much of its music. Searching for a bigger pond, Burch moved to Austin, Texas in an effort to stand on her own two feet. There, Burch began to write her own music in earnest, with the lovelorn Everly Brothers and Sam Cooke as her songwriting guides. Joined by Toliver in Austin a year later, the two connected with Dan Duszynski of Cross Record, and they recorded all the songs on Please Be Mine at his idyllic studio in Dripping Springs, Texas. Motivated by the hourly rate, Burch and her band recorded all the basic tracks and vocals live in one room and in one day, with minimal overdubs for keys and back-up vocals happening a day later. A difficult task for any talented musician, it becomes more mind-blowing when you hear her belt it on tracks like “Downhearted” and “I Love You Still.” We're all lucky Molly started writing music simply to complement her voice, as we've discovered a great new American songwriter in the process. Captured Tracks is proud to present this debut album of ten beautiful, wistful love songs of loss, loneliness and reconnecting." Fresh off a spring West Coast tour opening for Molly Burch, a couple cool UK festivals, and several very fun music video releases, genre-bending singer-songwriter JayWood is starting an exciting summer. It began with his first-ever appearance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival last weekend -- where he brought his mix of jazz, pop, folk, and funk music to huge hometown crowds -- and then kicks into high gear with the release of a new full-length album, Slingshot, on July 15. Paul Little caught up with JayWood on the final day of the Winnipeg Folk Fest to chat about his festival experience, his successful tour windows when many acts have had to cancel gigs worldwide, writing and recording the new record, and why he made sure it's a complete front-to-back package rather than just a collection of songs. If you're in Winnipeg, you can head to the Tallest Poppy on Thursday, July 14 at 8:00 PM for a Slingshot album listening party. Otherwise, be sure to keep your eyes peeled to JayWood's Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter for upcoming summer tour dates across North America and beyond -- including Manitoba festivals Real Love Summer Fest and Rainbow Trout Music Festival -- as well as a proper album release show sometime in the fall.
In episode 38 I talk to singer-songwriter Molly Burch about actress Lynn Carlin. She is best known for her debut role in the film Faces, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award..

Molly Burch has a way of making one swoon. It could very well be the breathy subtleties of her voice, the poetry of her love language – the slightly crestfallen humor behind it. Yes. All of this. Now Burch has reached the next chapter, shortly following her 30th birthday, radiating a more confident wisdom. -Cover […]

As broadcast July 6, 2021 with plenty of extra f bombs for you filthy-mouthed podcasting pukes. We mark this day in 1981 at the Werchter Fest in Belgium when The Cure, getting pressured by Robert Palmer's people to get off the stage, proceeded to give him a massive middle finger by playing a nine minute version of "A Forest." "2021 has not exactly been 'better' thus far. But, there are some bright spots. For me, the bright spots include the release of Pearl Charles' album, Magic Mirror. It's officially out today and I'll bookend the show with tracks form it! Plus, scroll down to check out her latest video for the track, "Only For Tonight." If you haven't ordered the album yet... what are you waiting for?! Go to her bandcamp now and grab one up. Another 2021 highlight, music from Babehoven. A (new to me) band, currently based in Vermont and fronted by Maya Bon. You'll hear music in today's mix from their upcoming EP, Yellow has a pretty good reputation. It's set for release on January 29th and you can go now and order on their bandcamp page! Another exciting 2021 release? The single 'Emotion' from Molly Burch, just dropped! The track features her Captured Tracks label-mate Wild Nothing (Jack Tatum) and IT'S A BOP! Seriously, go get the 7" (which also features an Ariana Grande cover) on her website RIGHT NOW! I just got one and it's signed to boot! Plus, I've got music from Killola who just announced that they're going to be re-releasing Killola Live in Hollywood. We'll keep you updated with the details on that! 00:00 - Emily 01:46 - Only For Tonight - Pearl Charles 05:53 - Emotion - Molly Burch 09:58 - Phenom - Thao & The Get Down Stay Down 12:35 - Lose Your Love - Dirty Projectors 15:22 - I'm Magic - Killola 17:45 - Emily 18:45 - Disasociative Tally - Babehoven 22:09 - Intimate Distance - Caitlin Pasko 25:27 - Held High - Falcon Jane 28:53 - Infinite Wisdom - Laura Groves 32:17 - Larvae Love - Weekend Lovers 35:26 - Emily 35:53 - Rose Potion - Johanna Warren 39:50 - Those Eyes - Merce Lemon 42:13 - King Size Bed - KIT 45:10 - Crack In The World - Oceanator 49:22 - Emily 50:33 - Imposter - Pearl Charles 54:00 - Finish "

Salvation Army used record bins are crowded with Christmas albums presented in the 1960s, ‘70s, and ’80s by companies such as Firestone, True Value, and businesses that have since shut down. They often feature cover art that resembles a Christmas present or invokes nostalgic holidays from the past. On this episode of “12 Songs,” host Alex Rawls talks with New Orleans’ Joe Adragna about those albums and particularly one that was important to his family’s Christmases, A Very Merry Christmas Vol. 5, sold by Grant’s department store in Long Island. They talk about how these albums not only reflect but shape Christmas practices, and what the song and artist choices say the conception of Christmas put forward by these companies. Adragna is a pop classicist who records under the name The Junior League, and earlier this year he released a new album, Adventureland. After that conversation, host Alex Rawls talks about The Molly Burch Christmas Album by indie singer/songwriter Molly Burch (really this time!). The new album is Burch’s third, and Rawls reviews it, talking about how it fits into her body of work and some of the smart musical choices she makes on the album. We also hear her unusual take on “Last Christmas” by Wham!
For many, Nelson is the answer to a trivia question: What twin blonde guitar-playing brothers had a hit in 1990 with “Love and Affection”? Matthew Nelson acknowledges that his profile isn’t what it once was this week on “The 12 Songs of Christmas,” where he talks about This Christmas and This Christmas Too, companion albums that were released in 2015 and 2016. Each features the songs with a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks; songs that feature vocals on one album are instrumentals on the other, and vice versa. Matthew Nelson and his brother Gunnar are third generation in their family in the public limelight after their father, singer Ricky Nelson, and their grandparents Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, who had their own sitcom Ozzie and Harriet from 1952 to 1966. Matthew remembers Christmases with his family and talks about how he and Gunnar came to make not one but two Christmas albums, and why he considers “Blue Christmas” the hardest Christmas song to cover. The albums became part of a plan to do Christmas shows each year, and this year their Christmas tour starts on November 23 and runs through December 21. Go to their website for tour dates and tickets. After that conversation, host Alex Rawls talks about The Molly Burch Christmas Album by indie singer/songwriter Molly Burch. The new album is Burch’s third, and Rawls reviews it, talking about how it fits into her body of work and some of the smart musical choices she makes on the album. We also hear her unusual take on “Last Christmas” by Wham! If you’re listening to this episode here, please subscribe to 12 Songs through Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher and Spotify. That way, you don’t miss an episode and I have numbers to help convince artists and their managers that appearing on the podcast is a good idea. Those numbers also help advertisers see “12 Songs” as a way to reach their markets. It’s a win/win!
