The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Mark Cunningham, aka The Human Fish, is hailed as one of the greatest bodysurfers of all time. He grew up in Hawaii, became a lifeguard in the mid-'70s, and for nearly 30 years guarded primarily at Ehukai Beach Park, with a view straight into Pipeline's barrel. Through the '70s, '80s, and '90s, Cunningham won nearly every bodysurfing event he entered. But, as Cunningham would be the first to tell you, bodysurfing is not about winning or losing. Cunningham retired from lifeguarding in 2005, at age 49. In recent years, he's become an obsessive reefcomber, finding fins, sunglasses, watches, and other valuables on the ocean floor. He's also become a visual artist, using his findings in sculptures and assemblages. In this episode of Soundings, Cunningham talks with Jamie Brisick about the multifarious duties of a lifeguard, scanning the impact zone, brushes with fate at Backdoor, playing in the shorebreak, the joys of retirement, Puerto Escondido, and the virtue of leading a simple life.

Julian sits down with the creators of the original Bamboo House in Puerto Escondido, Mexico. A one-of-a-kind, cozy sustainable shelter. Curated by the natural environment found in the coast of Oaxaca. The heart of this house lies in the belief that we should all take part in building a more prosperous future and sustainability should be a priority considering the environmental shifts that we are facing. Inspired in making a more conscious lifestyle, we've designed Casa de la Tierra to evoke an authentic sense of wellbeing that embodies the space and connects spirit with nature. The house build was directed by Laura and Gonzalo, with help from Jorge Luna, permaculturist and biologist from Veracruz, specialized in construction and bamboo structures along with many family members, friends and volunteers that joined the journey of imagining and creating this house, to serve as an example of how to intertwine sustainability, comfort and balance with nature. Found next to an ecological reserve in Punta Zicatela, next to Puerto Escondido, just 10 minutes from the beach, Casa de la Tierra is a place to stimulate sensibility and immerse you in nature's echo. Here, the greatest luxury is finding your bare self sheltered by natural materials, sounds and sensations unique to Oaxaca's coast. All packed into a comfortable boutique setting. Casa de la Tierra is a completely unique experience. A dream come true that blends nature and architecture in an exceptional way. Imagine a house built entirely with bamboo and clay, surrounded by a natural pool lush vegetation. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/julian-guderley/support

In 2007, I spent six weeks in a hostel in the middle of Guatemala just “because”.Truly, I'd never felt so free. The two years prior had been spent working like a donkey, with good people but in a field I hated. The endgame? Admission to the Supreme Course of Queensland as a lawyer. It was an accolade I spent 7 years working towards..Only to quit, 6-weeks to the day later. And so, there I found myself in a computer shop in Puerto Escondido, Mexico, on a steaming April afternoon checking my emails when my brothers friend messaged us on Facebook.“Wanna come visit?” – he wrote, “I'm just down the road in Guatemala!”We looked at each other.Of course we would. It wasn't even a QUESTION.We were free. The world was our oyster. And we could do anything, be anyone, go anywhere! And so it came to be that I ended up spending the best, most carefree, most FUN 6-weeks of my life living out of a backpack in a dingy hostel dorm room in Antigua.Acutely aware that I had opted out of life for a little minute, and feeling grateful as heck for it.Five years later, I started my online business chasing that kind of freedom again. And on the surface, the promise of it all felt..  intoxicating.Time freedom – to work when I wanted!Location freedom – to go back to Central America, or London, or ANYWHERE BUT HERE!Financial freedom – to make more than a doctors wages working on the goddamn INTERNET!I wanted it.The sense of adventure. The possibility. The wonder that came from not knowing what would come next. The Tuesday afternoons spent outside (and not in an air-conditioned cubicle)ALL OF IT.

Robbins was talking about “conditioning” and Foreman was talking about daily habits for success, while Dr. Stephen Covey was talking about seven habits. I started talking to myself aloud, then began pacing in circles. “It's not about morning habits or success habits or a list of habits. It's far more basic! At eight, Coco Nogales sold gum on the street in Mexico City. He was a runaway, sleeping in bushes and bus stops, and if the police caught him, they would throw him in a juvenile detention center, so he hid at night and worked on the streets to survive. Eventually, he had enough money to buy a bus ticket to Puerto Escondido, a small town with one of the most dangerous big waves on the planet. The watershed moment of his career came when he was 17, photographed surfing a gigantic wave at Puerto Escondido. He says it changed his life forever. Determination and following every opportunity led him to where he is today. Now recognized as one of the top big wave surfers in Mexico, he has traveled the world from Hawaii and South Africa and many places in between.During this podcast, Nogales tells the story of nearly drowning at Todos Santos, a big wave in northern Baja, and the lessons he learned through his recovery. If you dig this podcast, will you please leave a short review on Apple Podcasts? In Episode 15 of the Dream Retirement In Mexico podcast, hosts Risa Morimoto and Taniel Chemsian sit down with guest Suki Tranqille to discuss their experiences and lessons learned during their journey of moving and buying property in Mexico.  Suki shares advice and cautionary tales about working with architects as contractors, emphasizing the importance of separate architectural plans and thorough budget examination. They recount their initial plans to move to Mirajin, Colombia, disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led them to Puerto Escondido in Oaxaca, Mexico instead.  Suki expresses her love for Oaxaca, a vibrant city that meets the criteria of a mountain town with fresh air, diverse cultural activities, and a vibrant food scene. She also stresses the significance of learning Spanish to navigate daily life and establish connections with locals. The episode covers important factors to consider when buying property, such as the need for a centralized real estate system in Mexico and the need to take time and not feel pressured into a deal. Suki concludes by recommending different neighborhoods in Oaxaca based on individual preferences but advises against signing long-term leases and to find a place that matches one's personality.   Key Moments:  [00:01:23] Happy accident leads to life-changing relocation. [00:03:24] Unexpectedly ended up in Oaxaca and stayed. [00:11:10] Expats prefer certain areas with eco parks and golf courses. [00:24:05] Low maintenance costs and no heating bills. [00:27:32] Architects in Mexico often act as contractors. Don't hire them for both roles.  [00:32:49] Learning Spanish saves money, promotes connection.
