Supposedly, the apocalypse will be rung in with horns. But they won't be horns like this, unless the rapture is truly rapturous. The 2010s showcased Moon Hooch's evolution from studious Jazz disciples to rave-inducing dance barons. Using a “reverse DJ” set up, they filter their saxes, vocoders and another set of mad brass weapons that would make Cannonball Adderley smile, through Ableton, playing EDM with Jazz instruments. And that crazed euphoria has translated well in their live shows and songs. At their best, Moon Hooch create a hallucinatory, out of body experience. So, listen to our interview with them, read our blurb on their break through single “Number 9” and see why they're the best of the 10s. “I don't think I'm looking for anything other than my own surrender. ” — Wenzl Mcgowen

Musician and author Wenzl McGowen joins the podcast to talk about his incredible awakening, growing up an atheist and the collective consciousness of the world. From touring and drugs to spirituality and fasting, listen in to a deep conversation about life! Wenzl McGowen is a member and co-founder of the internationally touring band Moon Hooch and the inventor of the Traffic Cone Saxophone. In 2013, Wenzl had a spiritual awakening during a meditation retreat and has since written two books about mystical experiences, meditation, and the science of personal growth. Both books draw from ancient teachings, direct experience, and modern science. He aims to free spirituality from dogmas and provide a framework to integrate awakening experiences without religion and superstition. At the same time, his work is inspired by sincere devotion to a dimension of reality that has given rise to concepts such as God or Great Spirit. He doesn't subscribe to the idea that words can capture the essence of consciousness, yet he taps into that realm to become a better person and bring more joy, creativity, love, and insight into his life. Another avenue of his passion for personal growth is his meditation music and his board games.Wenzl website -- https://wenzlmcgowen.org/Watch the video version of the podcast here exclusively on the streaming platform AKASHA FLIX -- https://www.akashaflix.com/minds-like-mine-s-podcastSupport the show

I had the chance to catch up with THOMAS FOX, all-around kind Human, Creative Producer, and Idea Enthusiast. But mostly? To playfully dive into his deep love for Cleveland, music, breakfast sandwiches, Vecchio Amaro - Cavassia Cognac Italian cocktails, and of course, all things Greyt Culture. Fresh off his Greyt Big Talk at Limelight Electric Gardens with Thomas' big brother Michael Fox discussing entrepreneurial integrity, curiosity, and energy, we explore Thomas' “next thing” with New York-based jazz-electronic-dance saxophone trio Moon Hooch at the Saucy Brew Works Vibe Garden, kicking off spring in the CLE. THOMAS FOX is a multi-disciplinary creative producer born, raised, based in Cleveland, Ohio. Founder and President of Greyt Culture (formerly known as Agumboot.com), Fox founded CreativeMornings Cleveland in the fall of 2014 and Agumboot Music Festival in 2016. The arts and entrepreneurship advocacy programs merged under the coalescing Greyt banner in 2019, reflecting a common thread in the stories of all artists and entrepreneurs: perspective. Fox continually delivers world-class cultural programs with a vast history of curating raw and rising creative talent. Previous to Greyt Culture programs, Fox founded indie music studio Bad Racket in 2010 and simultaneously served as the creative leader of Cleveland's Brite Winter Arts and Music Festival until 2014. Fox's perpetual curiosity for what's next has led to collaborations between unlikely creative partners in art, business, and industry. Greyt Culture is an independent arts collaborative based in Cleveland, Ohio. First - an apology; I played the wrong Shakespeare song; it was meant to be 'Come Unto These Yellow Sands' but, instead, I played 'Come Away Death' which has nothing to do with sand at all. And I can't promise you Wilson, Betty & Keppel or Sandy Shaw, but I can offer plenty of sandy songs. Moon Hooch, The Chordettes, One Thousand Violins, Kirsty McGee, The Left Banke, Pat Boone, Delia Derbyshire, Stuff Smith, The Martin Best Ensemble and Medeski Martin And Wood, as well as many others, all ready to give you an absolute beach of a show!

Episode 042 welcomes JACKSON WHALAN, emcee/producer based in the Berkshire mountains of Mass. We met in NorCal about 5 years ago, and he released his latest full-length LP From the Woods in Jan 2021; Whalan's got a huge collab on the way with the legendary Blastmaster himself, KRS-ONE. Jackson also helped inspire me to start this podcast when we did a live onstage Q&A in Nevada City, CA back in 2017. @4:00 - Welcome Back LETT & 'Mr. Yancey' live in Denver @10:00 - Jackson Whalan intro, @15:00 JW interview / @1hr 50min S.N.A.G. by Jackson Whalan Our 90-min conversation touches on JW's colorful journey, from humble rural environs to the NYC underground, ashram across the world to a pot farm in Grass Valley, Cali. Other rabbit holes: being white in hip-hop, surviving as an independent artist, using social media to your promotional advantage, and a discussion that unpacks our respective brushes with the law. We finish up with an exciting career development involving the great KRS-ONE. About Jackson Whalan: On the western edge of Massachusetts, there were very few examples of hip-hop artists from his rural hometown, but the music made its way into his life when he found CDs that belonged his older brother. When Jackson discovered the power of hip-hop, he was waking up to issues of race, class, politics, human rights and climate change. His music soon became the vehicle for addressing injustices and inspiring people. In 2012, college studies took Jackson to India and an eco-village, Auroville. In the U.S., he studied turntablism at The New School with DJ Rob Swift; he graduated in 2013 with a B.A. in music. Jackson began releasing and performing under his own name in 2014, with the release of “S.N.A.G. (Sensitive New Age Guy)”. Other releases followed: Raptivism (2015), “Cradle” (feat. Qwill), 2016, and Souled Out EP (2016). Jackson opened for Moon Hooch for over 50 dates during 2016-17. Jackson is an accomplished hip-hop/electronic producer as well, an Ableton educator, and makes himself available to other independent artists in a variety of professional, marketing, collaborative and artistic capacities. In 2019-2020, Jackson released singles and instrumentals every month for a full year, working closely with his co-producer and keyboardist Ian Evans. Tracks include “G.T.F.O.H.” (feat. Myka 9), “BIG FVCTS”, “The Long Game”, and a cover of John Lennon's “Gimme Some Truth”. Latest LP From the Woods dropped Jan. 2021. Find Elena:www.elenashirin.athttps://www.instagram.com/elenashirinzoe/About Elena Shirin:"Electric sparkling trip-hop & neo-soul...the follow-up of Erykah Badu, Lizz Wright, Jamila Woods or even Alicia Keys" – Groove Magazin (Germany)On May 15th 2020 Elena Shirin released her debut album "FROM A TO BE" via Motor Entertainment and received a magnificent national as well as international media response. After playing her first solo tour through the U.S. opening for Moon Hooch the vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, photographer and audio-visual artist Elena Shirin collaborated with producers/musicians like Demuja (A), Nathaniel Markman of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (US), Moon Hooch (US), Oehl (A), Aramboa (A), Philipp Lichtblau (A),etc. allowed the Viennese singer to explore the wide range of musical and artistic interests that are interwoven in her album. At the age of 12, Elena found poetry and music as her own personal anchor and a way to express her self transformation. Mantras of love, trust, and empathy arescattered throughout her songwriting. Transcending past her jazzy piano playing and soulful singing, Elena was constantly in touch with electronic music. She started recording and producing by age 15 and continued treating sound design as part of her compositions. Now cinematic soundscapes and energetic beats, deriving from classical music, jazz, tribal rhythm , and hip-hop, oscillate around Elena's subtle yet profound lyrics. With the first three singles, the young artist already made it on #3 of the Austrian FM4 charts and got selected as the Fm4 Soundpark Act of the Month, May 2020. Since the release of her solo debut ‘FROM A TO BE' Austria's and Germany's biggest newspaper and magazines like Musikexpress, Groove Magazin, Kronenzeitung, Kurier and many more took notice. She has around 8000 monthly listeners on Spotify, hit 40k streams of her single IMPLODE'XPLODE, and received several Airplay Rotations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, USA, and Luxemburg since then.Support the show (Http://Www.patreon.com/speakforchangepodcast)

While we've had Moon Hooch on the show before, their new album "Life on Other Planets" created an opportunity to once again explore this trio of musicians, who are making incredibly impressive music that is certainly undefinable. There are odes to Jazz, R&B, rock and EDM, but when you put that all in a blender, the sound is more robust than those genres. Then when you think about the instrumentation of the band, which includes two horn players and a drummer, not to mention a whole bunch of synths and midi sequences being fired, well, there is a lot to discuss. So we got in touch with Mike Wilbur, a third of the trio and half of the writing team, to discuss Moon Hooch, where they are at and where they are headed. Today on the show - Mr Nathan Paul. A multi-instrumentalist from Cleveland, Nathan's band The Admirables has been cooking this year, touring with Moon Hooch and Dwele and opening for artists like Cory Henry & Kamasi Washington. Nathan does not consider himself a jazz musician, though improvisation and groove are heavy elements of his sound. The singles Flute-a-Loo and Catch Me If You Can were released through Ropeadope this year as we pave the road for more to come from this continually creative mind. Nathan speaks frankly about his upbringing, and leads us through his songwriting process. This episode of The Matrix Podcast, “Underground sound” explores new and exciting sounds in the music industry. In this episode, we cover the bands “Moon Hooch” and “Too Many Zooz”. Both of these groups combine elements of jazz, EDM, and other genres of music, using instrumentation foreign to what those genres usually consist of. This episode covers their stories, progression and the growth of their sounds. You will hear interviews from band members Michael Wilber of Moon Hooch and Matt Doe of Too Many Zooz who tell us their stories, and insights of this new sound.
Joseph and Joey listen to a random 7", made as a collaboration between singer-songwriter Mike Doughty and sax/drum dance trio Moon Hooch. They knew nearly nothing about either of the groups or the record itself, to surprise themselves for this episode.

Moon Hooch makes more noise than anyone I think I’ve ever heard. For those of you who don’t know, Moon Hooch is comprised of drummer James Muschler with Mike Wilbur and Wenzl McGowen on various saxophones. There are also some synthesizers mixed in for good fun and to keep the beat, and the electricity going! Now only 8 years into a professional career that started with busking on New York city streets, these cats are on fire, having recorded 4 full length albums and a couple of EPs in that short time. I find their live presence extremely intricate but totally interesting. I’m not sure anyone truly understands how all that stuff works, but Mike and the boys do, so good on them. They sound great, and we’re looking forward to hearing more from them, and seeing them on the road. For more on Moon Hooch and some tour dates in North America visit moonhooch.com. We didn’t have time to set up an interview with Moon Hooch when they were in town last year, and we were darn lucky to catch James Muschler at a moment when the band was kind of (but not quite) stationary (they were going over a checklist before jumping back on the bus to start their new tour. This week we've secretly replaced our regular coffee with Hi-C Ecto Cooler, because it's time to check out the new Ghostbusters movie! Kevin recalls his favorite cover version of the Ghostbusters theme, by that legendary band, the Happy Hamsters. Meanwhile, thanks to our friends at the Kyle and Luke Talk About Toons podcast, Kornflake has become an actual Ghostbuster, and is already busting ghost lobsters. We also get hit by mysterious articles of clothing during Strip Zeppelin, a burlesque show featuring Niki Luparelli and the Gold Diggers, the Lipstick Criminals, and an elf. And we recommend new music from Richie Ramone (the third Ramones drummer, between Marky and, uh, Marky) and Moon Hooch (because we just can't get enough crazy saxophones). Plus: If you'd like to learn how to talk to a rabid weasel in an elevator, we just might have you covered.

The Brooklyn-based instrumental trio plays a kind of dance music that is hard to pin down: elements of jazz, house and free-form rock & roll come the band's sets, and the twin-saxophone attack of Michael Milbur and Wenzl Mcgowen is supported by the four-on-the-floor drumming of James Muschler. On this episode of Collector's Edition, the band plays two brand-new songs and talks about Moon Hooch's genesis as a subway-busking act and where it hopes to go next. The songs performed are "Something Else!", "Low 5" and "Tubes." Recorded on May 20, 2015 at KDHX in St. Louis, Missouri. Engineered by Dan Kinney.
This week, Brett has us dive into an eccentric sea of jazz-fusion curiosity with Moon Hooch and their album "This Is Cave Music". Did the guys feel the groove? Hit play and find out!
This week, we’re excited to talk to Katie Kirsch and Jenna Leonardo, co-founders of Girls Driving for a Difference. Jenna, Katie and their teammates Rachel Chung and Natalya Thakur are embarking on a journey to empower middle-school girls through design thinking workshops across the country this summer. Their passion is clear and we hope you’re as inspired by their mission as we are. We love their perspective on the age-old question: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Find out more about Girls Driving for a Difference on their Kickstarter page: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1066334211/girls-driving-for-a-difference-a-design-studio-on And follow them on Twitter: @girlsdrivingfor. Diego calls in from the TED conference in Vancouver, BC and gives us an insider view into what actually happens on the ground (hint: it looks just like Richard Scarry’s Busytown). Some of his highlights included: - June Cohen: https://twitter.com/junecohen - Elora Hardy: http://ibuku.com/ - Theaster Gates: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theaster_Gates - But most of all, Moon Hooch! (Watch here: https://youtu.be/wwBhxBBa7tE) You’ll also get a sneak peek of next week’s HMW, as Diego and Joe dip their toes into Meerkat. Not this meerkat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meerkat). This Meerkat! (http://meerkatapp.co/) And, of course, a fresh dose of VDTBOM (venture design that blew our mind). Like what you've heard? Not so much? This week, in a very special post-holiday Flopcast: We celebrate Appreciate a Dragon Day (and have a correction about the Tic Tac Dough dragon); Kornflake and Doornail's Christmas trip to Florida is all too similar to the Rifftrax classic "Santa Claus and the Ice Cream Bunny"; Kevin knows where the Pointer Sisters go for coffee (aren't you impressed?); Christmas dinner at the Red Arrow Diner is weird and bacon-filled; the final Rankin Bass Christmas cartoon (2001's Santa Baby) features a chicken and a lobster (it's a Flopcast miracle); and thanks to Moon Hooch, Kornflake rings in the new year with topless saxophone players. This is a super-quick episode, but you can hear even more of your Flopcast hosts this week on Earth Station One! Episode 248 is ESO's 2014 geek year in review show... and Kornflake is in the Geek Seat.

Every night is like a Broadway show.” –Kerry Diamond of Seersucker/Smith Canteen on Snacky Tunes “Southern food is one of the first market driven cuisines. Down south was like the walk in refrigerator of America.” “Fried chicken is not the end-all, be-all of southern food. I refuse to let it be.” –Robert Newton of Seersucker/Smith Canteen on Snacky Tunes
