Seattle's Dead Bars, in the words of Razorcake, “make something impossible to duplicate look so simple and attainable.” For over a decade, the band—founded and led by John Maiello—has been delivering life-affirming hard rock, drawing comparisons to acts like Japandroids, White Reaper, and Fucked Up. Throughout this time, they've earned national acclaim while remaining a beloved institution. They're the band most likely to be seen sweating it out on stage any given night, delivering "emotional singalong anthems—perfect for screaming along after you've had a beer, or five," as Kerrang! puts it.Their third LP, All Dead Bars Go to Heaven, reaffirms that there is “arguably no better Seattle band,” according to The Seattle Times. With ten hook-laden heavy hitters—from the rousing opener “I Wanna Be a Ghost” to the anthemic closer “Be Me”—the album marks a new chapter: an introduction for the next generation ready to escape the grind, and a reminder to the previous one of their enduring power. The theme is heaven: a place of eternal reward for a life lived virtuously, regardless of the love or loss that once defined it. When the band cries “Dead Bars Forever,” they mean it. This week's guest is Nick Wilkerson. For the past decade, Nick has been the drummer for the critically acclaimed Louisville, KY rock band, White Reaper. Recently, he decided to embark on a solo journey as an independent artist, and I'm eager to see what he creates next. I always invite drummers on this show who truly move me with their playing. I discovered Nick's videos on Instagram and was immediately impressed before I even realized he was the drummer for White Reaper, a band I really admire. Check out his videos, and you'll understand why. I was stoked to have this conversation with Nick, and it's moments like these that make me love what I do. Now, enjoy as we explore the five records that helped shape Nick Wilkerson into the musician he is today. Cheers! Ian and Steve looked ahead to the next three months and picked their most anticipated albums, tours, and trends! That's right — they hashed out future trends this time (29:46).In the meat of the episode, they talk about whether upcoming albums by Blondshell and 100 Gecs will live up to expectations this spring (31:12). Then they looked at the "Indie Rock Road Trip" tour set for June that has an interesting assemblage of bands: Weezer, Modest Mouse, Future Islands, Spoon, Momma, Joyce Manor and White Reaper (45:11). Is this the solution to the over-saturation of the live music market? Should we expect to see more traveling festivals that package together sort-of-but-not-really-alike bands? In Recommendation Corner (59:17), Ian talked up A New Tomorrow by hardcore band Zulu, while Steve raved about Girl In The Half Pearl by avant-R&B artist Liv.e.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Linus of Hollywood (Linus Dotson) is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and record producer. The stage name comes from his early days in Los Angeles, where he frequently wore striped shirts similar to the Peanuts character Linus van Pelt.  At age 21, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in music. In 1995 Dotson started his professional career with the band Size 14, named after his shoe size. After releasing their self-titled album in 1997, the band broke up in 1998.  After Size 14, Linus began playing with and producing other artists and recording his work. In 1999, Linus released his first solo album, Your Favorite Record, on his label, Franklin Castle Recordings. He performed nearly everything on the album, both instrumentally and vocally. He has since released four more albums: Let Yourself Be Happy (2001), Triangle (2006), Attractive Singles (2008), and Reheat & Serve (2008). The single for "A Girl That I Like" was released in 2011. Dotson released his fourth solo album in 2014, titled Something Good. Linus has toured with guitar hero Paul Gilbert extensively, as well as working with artists like: Allstar Weekend, 5 Seconds of Summer, Mr. Big, Bowling for Soup, Cheap Trick, The Charlatans, Kim Fox, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lil' Kim, Nerf Herder, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (of Jellyfish), Puff Daddy, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Dotson co-wrote the theme song for Nickelodeon's School of Rock and also wrote music for the show. His solo music has been included in the TV shows Weeds, Californication, and The New Normal. He also appeared as an actor in the season finale episode of The New Normal and performed in an episode of TNT's Rizzoli & Isles. Yea, he's done a lot. This week on Indiecast, Steven Hyden and Ian Cohen delve into the world of mainstream rock and assess the state of major-label bands waving the flag for guitars in a pop-dominated world. In the "meat" portion of the episode, they review the recent album by the viral Italian band Måneskin (30:28), who make their (mostly) English language debut with Rush! Is this record enjoyably dumb or just plain dumb? They report, you decide! They also talk about the latest LP from White Reaper (44:09), Asking For A Ride, a lovable one-time indie act who made the transition to the big leagues without losing their sense of humor or ability to write a hearty arena-rock hook.In the banter segment (1:40), they talk about the latest news regarding Panic! At The Disco (they're breaking up) and Fall Out Boy (they're putting out a new album). They then transitioned to talking about a happier topic — the 20th anniversary of Zwan's Mary Star Of The Sea, a long lost classic worth revisiting (14:39).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. There have been bands doing the retro-rock thing for years, but this phenomenon seems to be gaining momentum… It's only rock n' roll, and we like it!What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. The younger generation is picking up guitars and playing that classic blues-inspired hard rock again! This retro rock thing is not quite as new as the interweb is making it out to be, but who cares?
