My guest today is Dr. Jessie Thoman. Jessie is the professor of Horn and Music History at University of Tennessee, Martin and earned her degrees at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam (BM), The Ohio State University (MM, MA) and Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music (DM). Jessie is a regular performer with professional orchestras around the country and has shared the stage with artist such as Jeff Nelsen, Andre Watts, Leonard Slatkin, Michel Camilo, Sylvia McNair, Eric Ruske, Maureen McGovern and Byron Stripling. Jessie is also the cofounder of the Mirari Brass Quintet (www.miraribrass.com) which maintains a busy performing and touring schedule presenting master classes and recitals in public schools, colleges, universities, and performance halls all over the United States. Pittsburgh Symphony Principal  Pops Conductor Byron Stripling leads four concerts at Hartwood Acres in the Summer with the Symphony series. Since his Carnegie Hall debut with Skitch Henderson and the New York Pops, Trumpeter and Conductor Byron Stripling has become a Pops orchestra favorite, soloing with Boston Pops, National Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Cincinnati Pops, Seattle Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Dallas Symphony, to name a few. He has been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and on the PBS television special, "Evening at Pops," with conductors John Williams and Keith Lockhart. Currently, he serves as artistic director and conductor of the highly acclaimed Columbus Jazz Orchestra. On Saturday afternoon, July 17 at 2:30 p.m. he will be conducting the Tanglewood Family Concert - "American Melodies" - with members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. It is a family-friendly journey through the early songs that defined America, from folk songs to spirituals, gospel to jazz.

Pittsburgh Symphony Principal Pops Conductor Byron Stripling appears in a new edition of Front Row, the online virtual initiative of the Pittsburgh Symphony Friday night at 7:30 December 4 with  Finding Your Song. Byron describes the places he visits including the Hill District, August Wilson house and Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.  He talks Pittsburgh jazz greats and his most recent listening suggesting essential tracks by saxophone legend Sonny Rollins and much more. Bob Breithaupt is a professor of music at Capital University in Columbus, OH, one of the most recognized percussion programs in the US. He has authored print and video instructional media and presents clinics and seminars around the world. Bob has performed with jazz artists Terry Gibbs, Byron Stripling and John Pizzarelli and has held down the drum chair in the Columbus Jazz Orchestra since 1980. Rich Thompson is an Associate Professor of jazz studies and contemporary media at the Eastman School of Music and is a member of the Eastman Jazz Trio and Quartet with Harold Danko, Clay Jenkins and Jeff Campbell.
