As a fund-raising effort to support the International Women's Brass Conference, Ms. Slaughter organized and produced the very popular Holiday Brass Concerts, which are now in their second decade, and are performed each December in the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis. Other cities in the United States are holding their own Holiday Brass Concerts to help support the ever-growing International Women's Brass Conference.   In 1996, Ms. Slaughter founded Monarch Brass, an all women's brass ensemble, which has toured in the United States and Europe to critical acclaim.   Susan appears regularly in area recitals and religious programs, and has been a frequent soloist with the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, as well as with several other ensembles throughout the country. Her work is represented on a number of Saint Louis Symphony releases, including the highly acclaimed recordings of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5, Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F, Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, Barber's Capricorn Concerto, and most recently, John Adams' Doctor Atomic. Many of these and other recordings have been nominated for or won Grammy Awards. Susan has performed with Wynton Marsalis, Kathleen Battle, Christine Brewer, Doc Severinsen, Al Hirt in duets, amongst others.   She has served on the faculty of the Grand Teton Orchestra Seminar and the National Orchestra Institute, and has been lecture/recitalist at the International Trumpet Guild, while also serving on its board of directors.   Since the 1980's, Susan has performed the National Anthem and “God Bless America” on an annual basis for the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Club and, at the invitation of the Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent, performed the National Anthem at Game 3 of the 1991 World Series, played in Atlanta between the Braves and Twins (link).   Some of the awards and recognition Susan has received over the years include nomination by Ladies Home Journal for its annual Woman of the Year award, a special Leadership Award in the Arts from the Young Women's Christian Association, the American Federation of Musicians, Local 2-197 Owen Miller Award for loyalty, dedication and fairness in actions and deeds, and the 2007 Arts and Education Council Award for Excellence in the Arts.   Susan has studied over the years with Herbert Mueller, Bernard Adelstein, Arnold Jacobs, Robert Nagel, Claude Gordon and Laurie Frink, and retired as Principal Trumpet from the Saint Louis Symphony on September 1, 2010.   Podcast listeners! Welcome to the Blink Friction Arts Podcast and the Music Crazy Robots.Today we are holding the Low End: exploring Renowned Female Double Bass Players Who Changed the GameWhen we think of double bass players, it's easy to conjure images of towering instruments, smoky jazz clubs, and the deep rumble of classical orchestras. But while the double bass has long been considered a male-dominated instrument—perhaps due to its sheer size and physicality—women have not only held their own but reshaped the narrative in profound and inspiring ways. Here's a celebration of some of the most renowned female double bass players, spanning genres from classical to jazz, who continue to break boundaries and make their mark.1. Esperanza SpaldingIf there's a modern icon of bass brilliance, it's Esperanza Spalding. A musical prodigy, Spalding plays both double bass and electric bass with virtuosic ease, weaving jazz, fusion, classical, and soul into a genre-defying tapestry. She made headlines in 2011 by winning the Grammy for Best New Artist—an award rarely given to jazz musicians. With a string of critically acclaimed albums and boundary-pushing live performances, Spalding's influence reaches far beyond the bass community. She's also a professor at Harvard, emphasizing innovation in music and performance.2. Chi-chi NwanokuBritish-born Chi-chi Nwanoku is a trailblazer in the classical music world. As the founder of the Chineke! Orchestra—the first professional orchestra in Europe made up of majority Black and ethnically diverse musicians—she has made it her mission to open doors in a traditionally exclusionary space. A formidable double bassist in her own right, Chi-chi was a principal bassist with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment for over 30 years. Her career blends musical excellence with social justice, making her a vital voice in contemporary classical music.3. Linda May Han OhHailing from Australia and now based in New York, Linda May Han Oh has become one of the most in-demand jazz bassists of her generation. Whether leading her own projects or playing with legends like Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, or Vijay Iyer, Oh brings a deep musicality and sharp improvisational mind to every performance. Her tone is warm, articulate, and commanding, with an emotional range that speaks volumes. She also teaches at the Berklee College of Music and the New School, nurturing the next wave of bass talent.4. Kristin KorbA rare mix of bassist and vocalist, Kristin Korb blends bebop agility with a velvet voice. Originally from the U.S. and now based in Denmark, Korb carries forward the tradition of singing bassists (think Ray Brown or Slam Stewart) but with a distinctively elegant and lyrical touch. Her interpretations of jazz standards are joyful, inventive, and rhythmically tight, making her performances feel both timeless and fresh.5. Caroline EmeryFor lovers of classical double bass pedagogy, Caroline Emery is a key figure. A professor at the Royal College of Music in London, Emery has trained a generation of outstanding bassists, many of whom now play in top orchestras worldwide. She's known for her work with young musicians and her emphasis on posture, breath, and physical awareness—an essential contribution to transforming how double bass is taught and performed.6. Jennifer LeithamJennifer Leitham, a veteran of the jazz scene and an accomplished composer, performer, and educator, is best known for her work with the likes of Mel Tormé and Doc Severinsen. Her playing is powerful and deeply rooted in jazz tradition, but she's also known for pushing the envelope both musically and personally. As a transgender woman in jazz, Leitham has been an advocate for visibility and acceptance in the music world, proving that artistry and authenticity go hand in hand.7. Amy DominguesClassically trained yet artistically adventurous, Amy Domingues has explored everything from Baroque continuo playing to post-rock collaborations and experimental sound art. Based in Washington, D.C., she's a cellist and double bassist with a unique voice. Her work highlights the double bass's capacity for subtlety, beauty, and textural depth across genres. Why Representation MattersThe double bass may be one of the largest and most physically imposing instruments in the orchestra or on the bandstand, but these women show that passion, skill, and vision aren't confined by size or stereotype. They've not only expanded what's possible on the instrument—they've redefined who gets to play it.Whether you're a student, a listener, or a player yourself, exploring the work of these bassists is a powerful reminder of music's capacity to evolve—and to include.Want to dive deeper? Check out performances by these players on YouTube, explore their discographies on streaming platforms, and follow their latest work on social media. And if you're learning bass yourself—take heart: these legends prove that the possibilities are endless.Follow the music crazy team on YouTub @taletellerclub

In this episode of Seeing Them Live, we are thrilled to have Jose Rivera, founder, manager, and lead vocalist of the band Five Guys Named Moe. Jose shares his extraordinary journey from a budding musician to a prolific performer. He narrates how his fascination with the trumpet began in his early childhood and flourished during his time as a section leader and soloist for the United States Marine Corps. Jose describes his experiences performing before U.S. Presidents and numerous heads of state from 1972 to 1977.He shares captivating anecdotes about sharing stages with trumpet legends like Doc Severinsen and Al Hirt, and his early inspirations such as Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, and Bill Chase. One particularly memorable story includes a chance encounter with Chase the night before he left for Marine Corps basic training, which solidified his passion for high register trumpet playing. Jose also talks about the devastating impact of the plane crash in 1974 that tragically ended the lives of several members of the band Chase, and the emotional 40-year reunion concert that followed, filled with nostalgia and respect for the members who were lost. Jose reflects on his post-Marine Corps life and the formation of Five Guys Named Moe in 1988. The band quickly gained popularity with their unique style and vibrant performances, playing at numerous gigs across the Midwest every year. Jose's attention to professionalism and the importance of band dynamics and promotions are evident as he speaks about managing the band over the years. The impact of the Moe Heads, the band's loyal fans, is also a testament to their ongoing success. Jose underscores the hard work, dedication, and strategic planning required to sustain a band's longevity in the competitive music industry. As an experienced musician, he offers valuable insights about balancing artistic integrity with crowd-pleasing performances and the reciprocal importance of venue support in promoting events. By mingling with fans and maintaining a professional band practice, Jose ensures that Five Guys Named Moe remains a staple of vibrant live music in the Midwest.BANDS: Al Hirt, Bill Chase, Blood, Sweat, and Tears, Blues Brothers, Chicago, Chase, Doc Severinsen, Five Guys Named Moe, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Lovecraft, The Kind, United States Marine CorpsVENUES: CD and Me, Cousins, North and Maple, Tailgaters, Ballydoyle, Buddy Pals, Q Bar, Poplar Creek, Superdome PATREON:https://www.patreon.com/SeeingThemLivePlease help us defer the cost of producing this podcast by making a donation on Patreon.WEBSITE:https://seeingthemlive.com/Visit the Seeing Them Live website for bonus materials including the show blog, resource links for concert buffs, photos, materials related to our episodes, and our Ticket Stub Museum.INSTAGRAM:https://www.instagram.com/seeingthemlive/FACEBOOK:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61550090670708

Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

This trumpet-playing musician and bandleader was loved by Milwaukee symphony fans. Doc Severinsen appeared many times with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. And in 2007 he was named Pops Conductor Emeritus in Milwaukee. His father wanted him to play the violin. He wanted to play the trombone, but his arms weren't long enough, so he settled for the trumpet. Doc toured with Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey and served in World War II. He became the studio musician for NBC and worked with Steve Allen on the original “Tonight Show.” He left the show for a while, until Tonight Show bandleader Skitch Henderson asked him to return and play trumpet in the band. Five years later he was the leader of the “Tonight Show” band. Doc was known for wearing gaudy clothing, joking with Johnny Carson, and playing “Stump the Band.” Severinsen has recorded many albums and won the Grammy award for best large jazz ensemble performance. In this conversation he discusses his broken marriages, how he got the name Doc and what he thinks of the unauthorized biographies.

Greetings! Another April Fools Day is upon us and I chose a bunch of music that has humor, both topically and/or structurally at it's core with Phase Two focused on music directly from or influenced by cartoons, both classic and more recent.  In addition, this particular theme gives me another excuse to play Komar & Melamid/Dave Soldier's masterpiece, "The Most Unwanted Music" which makes me laugh out loud every time I hear it. Snarky Puppy have been delivering the goods for some time. From picking up Grammys to creating the Ground Up Festival, kudos to their futuristic fusion that takes all things soulful, funky and jazzy and turns it on its ear. Like the bands from Miles Davis' electric-era, this group has a hundred flowers blooming in their talent pool. The band boasts members who have taken part in the music of Prince, Erykah Badu, Justin Timberlake, David Crosby, and Ghost-Note. Known as "The Fam" to friends and fans alike, guitarist Bob Lanzetti gets anything but snarky with us as we discuss the music and more. Speaking of flowers blooming, our next guest needs no introduction as he made his name in the late night talk show game. The Major Scale has been covering the cream of this crop since we started, and we're proud and humbled to present an icon. Easily the godfather to today's Jon Batiste and The Roots, without further delay: HEEEEEEEEEEEERE's DOC!!!!!! "Doc" Severinsen that is, the legendary band leader from The Tonight Show. While Johnny Carson may have been the king of late night, Doc is the king of the music. Night after night he presided over some of the greatest musicians in the world, with trumpet in hand and outrageously bespoke threads on his frame. The NBC peacock logo paled in the light of Doc and a band that included a who's who of greats like Clarke Terry, Shelly Manne, Snooky Young and more. Severinsen joins The Major Scale to shed light on recently discovered recordings from his workshops with Texas high school bands. Recorded in the 1970s, the music is masterful, with epic and cinematic turns, with a backstory that touches the heart. It's perhaps his greatest artistic achievement to date.
