Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms make their home in the San Juan Islands, in Washington State, and their latest spring tour saw them make a stop at the Albino Skunk Music Festival in May 2025. This was two weeks ahead of their own festival, the inaugural East Sound Music Ramble, and part of an eastern swing that preceded other engagements including Telluride Bluegrass Festival. The duo has been very much on the go lately, which is in keeping with their recent past: sojourns to Louisiana, to celebrate the music of Cajun and country legend Jimmy C Newman; to The Last Frontier state for the Alaska Folk Festival; and to Vermont, where Caleb connected with Noam Pikelny, which led to becoming a guest member of bluegrass supergroup Mighty Poplar, to name a few. I spoke with Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms on a picture perfect spring afternoon in Greer, SC, in between their two sets at Skunk Fest, where we touched on all of these travels, both physical and musical; their own region's musical “rogue-ness”; the raw simplicity and danceability of their take on country music; and the importance of slowing down and being present. That and more awaits you, including their music, both live and on record, in this episode. Have you heard Foghorn Stringband? Then you’ve heard Caleb Klauder and Reeb Willms. Based in Portland, Oregon, where the old-time music scene is alive and well, Caleb and Reeb balance life working in four different bands and still manage to keep a small food farm thriving in their front yard. When they aren’t on the road with Foghorn Stringband, or The Caleb Klauder Country Band, or the The Cajun County Revival, they are out playing house concerts and small theaters as a duo.Their vocal blend is uncanny and dreamy and makes me want to kick off my shoes, pull up a swinging chair on the front porch and sip lemonade. Caleb writes songs that get you up to do-si-do and is one heck of a mandolin player. Reeb is one of the best rhythm guitar players I’ve heard, with a right hand as steady as a metronome. They play original music, old-time, bluegrass, cajun, country, and pretty much any style in between. I spent the afternoon with them, talking about songwriting, learning to sing, juggling projects, dealing with fear and The Great Big Fais-do-do. - MMWelcome to Episode 4.MUSIC CREDITSOPHELIA (INTO/OUTRO) - LES HAYDEN HTTPS://LESHAYDEN.BANDCAMP.COMLAST OF MY KIND - PAUL BURCH http://paulburch.comNEW SHOES - CALEB KLAUDER https://calebklauder.comSOLDIER’S JOY (Traditional) - POT OF EARTH PUBLISHING (ASCAP) HTTPS://WWW.NEOSOUNDS.COM/SONGSBACK OUT WEST - WILLIAM NAUGHTON (APRA) / LYNNE PUBLISHING (PRS) HTTPS://WWW.NEOSOUNDS.COM/SONGSCAJUN GUMBO - JOHN FRANCIS JORGENSEN (BMI) / LYNNE PUBLISHING (PRS) HTTPS://WWW.NEOSOUNDS.COM/SONGSRECORDED AND HOSTED BY MICHELLE McAFEE ( MUSIC / PHOTOGRAPHY )© 2018-2019 A SONGBONES MAGAZINE PODCAST
Březnová Dupárna je téměř celá experimentůprostá a věnuje se výhradně bluegrassu. To nejlepší ze série Bluegrass Situation – kupříkladu Foghorn Stringband, Caleb Klauder, Tim O´Brien či Delta Rae.
Banjo player Jesse Langlais chuckled when he first saw the question about Town Mountain as a bluegrass finishing school. It is true that the band has had a lot of members come and go over their 11+ years, and many have done quite well after their tenure in this five piece from Asheville, NC. It is also true that once you are Town Mountain member, there is a reunion somewhere in your future. There is never a last ride in the van: once you play in the band, you are like family. Arthur Grimes buck dances with Town Mountain at MerleFest in 2018 As tightly knit and warm as they are, there is also an edge and a swagger to Town Mountain. All five members are well versed in the bluegrass tradition, but they also have some rock and roll in them, and the dexterity to weave these influences together seamlessly. With the addition of drums, and a song co-written by and featuring Tyler Childers on their latest album New Freedom Blues, they show their ability to stay true to the music of icons like Bill Monroe and Jimmy Martin while building something altogether new. I spoke with Jesse, mandolin player Phil Barker and bassist Zach Smith, their producer Caleb Klauder and others in this episode which features album tracks and live tunes from the band. Plus, a wee bit of The Police and R.E.M. It really does make sense once you hear it, we promise. Thanks to the friendly folks at The Bywater in Asheville for hosting our interview session, to Sarah Bennett at All Eyes Media for helping set up the interview and for being on the show herself, and to Caleb Klauder and Jerry McNeely for taking the time to talk with me also. Thanks to Osiris for carrying us on their network, and to Bluegrass Planet Radio for airing this series too. We appreciate everyone who listens, and especially those who spread awareness for this series and the artists and music professionals we profile. Giving us a good rating and comment on podcast platforms like Apple Podcast makes us quite grateful, and we would count you as a total rock star if you joined us as a patron or sponsor. Next up? A bit of a departure, as we take a deep dive into the song “Wagon Wheel” and talk with artists who played it. Drop us a line if you have a story to tell! - Joe Kendrick

It all started with a session. In August 2007, Betse Ellis and Tim Matthew sat behind the Famous Spiegeltent during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, trading Scottish and American fiddle tunes when Betse said to Tim "we ought to do this more often". These concerts will feature both traditional Scottish music and its American counterparts, and American music that influences current day Scottish musicians (and vice versa). Named for a traditional fiddle tune and song, "Across the Sea" celebrates an interchange of musical ideas from the past and present, but rather than examine this migrated music from an analytical or musicological perspective, it will be done via a live-performance and concert format that will bring the well-catalogued historical travel to life. The tour features some of the finest musicians from all over the world. From Scotland, Kris Drever (Traditional Instrumentalist of the Year - 2008), from Ireland Eamonn Coyne (Salsa Celtica) and from the US Betse Ellis, Caleb Klauder & Sammy Lind.
