In her debut album, Sisters of White Chapel, Alaskan writer and musician Annie Bartholomew brings a fresh approach to traditional folk music, channeling the under told stories of some of the working women of Alaska's Gold Rush. And as she tells 49 Writers Active Voice producer and host Katie Bausler, sex work was the only choice for many women in late 19th century mining towns. Bartholomew wanted to know more about their lives. So she wrote an album of short stories. A few of the haunting and catchy tunes are featured in this episode, kicked off by Bartholomew's adaptation of The Cuckoo, with her on Clawhammer banjo.

Listening back to it now, it's hard to believe that Bad Religion's seventh studio album - 1993s 'Recipe For Hate' - was at the time considered a polarizing record that many hardcore fans felt was a sell-out. 30 years later, it's clear this was a band at the top of their game - maturing and expanding musically while still delivering ferociously intelligent songs about class, religion and navigating a treacherous path towards the 21st century. Our guest, personal trainer and Taekwon-Do Studio owner Aaron Fruitstone, makes the case that their brand of cerebral punk is as presciently valid now as it was when he was an angry teen. "Well madness reigned and paradise drowned When Babel's walls came crashing down Now the echoes roar for a story writ That was hardly understood And never any good." Visit our store for more shows Audioshows.e-junkie.com The Black Museum is another collaboration between Welles and producer Harry Alan Towers. The radio series treated audiences to crime thrillers based on actual Scotland yard cases. Its life spanned exactly the year 1952, with a few weeks off at the beginning of June. Welles played his usual role of host and narrator, and also steered the series in terms of its major direction and aesthetics. Though Welles and Towers drew inspiration from Scotland Yard (the Black Museum was Scotland Yard's crime museum), and while Towers produced another series The Secrets of Scotland Yard on that entity's crime-fighting exploits, the aim with The Black Museum was not historical accuracy. Welles was out to provoke and to amaze with gruesome details. The format of the show was his host character strolling through the museum, whereupon, as radiohorrorhosts.com tells us, he would “casually pick up or point out various murder weapons and examine them, all the while droning on about the related crime as if it were a medical procedure.”
